Ron Parsons
Ron Parsons has been growing orchids for more than 40 years, and
has been interested in species orchids for most of that time. Ron loves
to photograph orchids and most other flowers whenever he can,
whether it be on trips to see them in nature or in collections. He loves to
travel to see orchids in the wild, and does so as often as possible. Ron
has close to 60,000 digital images, most of which are of orchids, and
still retains a slide library that exceeds 100,000 botanical images. He
has at least 3000 published photos that have appeared in magazines,
periodicals, journals and books.
Ron has co-authored three botanical books, all with Mary E. Gerritsen.
The first two, published by Timber Press, are Masdevallias, Gems of
the Orchid World and Calochortus, Mariposa Lilies and their Relatives.
Most recently, the third book, a large, luxurious, two-volume set,
A Compendium of Miniature Orchid Species was published by Redfern
Natural History Productions in January of 2014. The latter has nearly
1200 pages, 1800 photographs, and features more than 500 species.

Stanhopeas and their Relatives
Stanhopeas and their relatives are a group of approximately
300 Neotropical species that have some of the most amazing
and wonderful flowers in the orchid family. The often
ephemeral flowers have fantastic shapes and colors, with
sometimes powerful fragrances, that are used to attract their
pollinators in sophisticated and unbelievable manners.
Ron's talk covers nearly all of the 20 or so genera, with some
cultural info.

Matthew Stephens
Matt has exciting plans for the orchid collection at the conservatory, and he will
be at our meeting to share them.
The Conservatory of Flowers is a cherished National, State and Local landmark
within the City of San Francisco. It is also the oldest wooden greenhouse in
North America, at 137 years old. The core mission of the Conservatory of
Flowers is to connect people and plants in a place of exceptional beauty. It’s
massive redwood support beams support thousands of glass panes that allow
plants from all over the world to grow, and thrive under the care of a world
class team of horticulturists. Currently the Conservatory of Flowers is
undergoing an exciting transformation. Over the next three to five years the
organization is aligning a new organizational direction, cultivating strategic
partnerships, and redefining a new level of organizational excellence. One of
the items within this new direction will be to undergo a permanent gallery
renovation with the Highland Orchid collection the Conservatory maintains.
Specifically, the Conservatory of Flowers will be focusing on cultivating one of
the most comprehensive cloud forest orchid collections from North and South
America that exists in cultivation. The creation of this collection will allow the
Conservatory to focus newly rooted efforts towards conservation, and it is the
hopes that we will eventually become a worldwide leader in cloud forest orchid
conservation.

Minutes of the SFOS Board Meeting
SFOS Board Meeting August 8, 2016
Present: Mary Gerritsen, Jack Ryder, Jean Lee, Fred Schlecter, Tom

The meeting started at approximately 7:30 pm.
I. Treasurer’s Report
A. Jack Ryder presented the treasurer’s report and a file was uploaded
to the SFOS web site. Financially the Orchids in the Park was very
successful, with a net income of approximately $8500 ( a few expenses
may still come in). We did much better than last year. Admissions
totaled $6635.25, and based on an average ticket price of $4.50
(regular admission was $5 and senior admission $4) we had
approximately 1474 paid attendees, up considerably over last year.
Jack will have the final numbers for the September SFOS meeting. Our
high yield savings account has a balance of 108,909.95 and our
business market rate savings account has $1507.69. The board was
very appreciative of Jack’s efforts to reconcile the orchids in the park so
quickly. Checks for member sales went out to the members just before
the board meeting.
II. Vice President’s Report
A. Our September speaker will be Ron Parsons, topic Stanhopea and
their Relatives. The opportunity table will be provided by Joan Gunn of
Sacramento. The skill session will be a presentation by Matthew
Stephens, the new director of the Conservatory of Flowers. Matthew will
be discussing his plans for the conservatory orchid collection.
For October the speaker will be Cindy Hill, and the topic will be “Cindy’s
Favorites and how to grow them”. The opportunity table will be provided
by Cindy Hill. The skill session will be given by Roland Chan, one of our
new vendors at Orchids in the Park. Roladn’s company sells orchid
fertilizer, and he will be telling us what goes into their fertilizers so the
members can compare with what they are using. Information on how
macro and micro nutrients assist and promote health as well as growth
in plants will also be provided. They will also bring some fertilizer to sell
so that members can give the product a try.
The November meeting will feature three to four round table
discussions about various orchid related topics. Suggestions for
discussion topics should be sent to Mary Gerritsen
meg570@comcast.net . The plant table will feature Cymbidium hybrid
seedlings produced by Pierre Pujol. Pierre has won numerous awards
for his cymbidiums and has generated some very promising hybrids.

setup and cleanup at Monthly
Meetings. If your last name falls
within the letter range T Z, please bring snacks such as
fresh fruit, crackers & cheese for
the next meeting. About three
dozen cookies, one cake, one to
two pounds of fruit or cheeses, or

III. Membership report
No Report.
IV. Pacific Orchid and Garden Show Report
A. Vendor invitation packets were sent out to vendors on August 7, and
several vendors have already indicated interest in booth space. There
are potentially 117 10’ x 10’ booths available. Michael Galli has helped
with the floor plan. Tom is still trying to get more non-orchid vendors to
participate. A number of in kind sponsors will participate, including
Metamorphosis Landscaping (install garden in exhibit area), Tree
Movers (supply trees for the show), A. Silvestri (statuary for the show),
and Lynsgo Garden Materials (mulch, rock, materials for the exhibit
area). Frances is contacting potential financial sponsors for the show.
Frances and Tom have met with Cow Palace recently and finalized the
floor plan. The outstanding item remaining is to finalize how the
ticketing will be handled by the Cow Palace. Once the ticket issues are
resolved, a contract will be signed. Tom anticipates this will only take a
week or two. The show committee has selected a logo for the
promotional and other materials. The Thursday evening (formerly the
night we would have had the Gala) will be a “Special Advance
Opening”. More information to follow about ticket pricing and what it will
include.
V. Old Business
A. By law revisions for email communication: not discussed, Claire did
not attend the meeting
B. Expansion of library storage: not discussed, Dave has still not heard
from Parks and Recreation regarding our request.
VI. New Business
Change of Address
A. New President Replacement: the committee has still not found a
candidate. Dave Hermeyer is stepping down in September.

B. New sound system: In a previous meeting the board authorized the
expenditure of about $600 to purchase a new system. Paul Bourbin and
Bill Weaver researched this and have recommended a system that will
cost about $1200. A motion to approve the expenditure was made by
Jean Lee, seconded by Fred Schlecter, and passed.

meeting
D. Orchids in the Park Report and Dates for Next Year: Angelic is
working on a final report for the Orchids in the Park and Jack will be
completing the accounting; this will be ready for the next board meeting.
Overall it was agreed that the show was a tremendous success and
everyone is grateful to Angelic for all of the hard work she put into
making this a success. Angelic thanked Tom Perlite, Dave Hermeyer,
Jean Lee, Jack Ryder and Mary Gerritsen for all of their help and
suggestions, and thanked all of the volunteers whose efforts made the
show possible. There was considerable discussion about the date for
next year’s Orchids in the Park. Steve Brown of City College has
offered their facilities, which could relieve some of the costs as well as
the parking issue with Golden Gate Park events. Angelic, Dave, Jean
and Tom will set up a date with Steve Brown to determine suitability. As
an alternative, two potential weekends (one in July, one in the fall) will
be selected and full analysis of competing events in the park completed
before the next board meeting. A reservation needs to be made by Sept
15. Potential weekends in July and August were discussed, as well as
September. The major issues are competing events-at the California
Academy, music concerts etc.
E. SFOS Bay Area Book Proposal: Mary described a book project that
would essentially be a Bay area specific guide to growing orchids in and
around the bay area. The book would be edited and the layout, printing
and shipping performed by RedFern Press, a UK based publisher that
Mary has worked with previously. Mary proposed the SFOS would
cover the publishing costs, which would be later recovered by sales of
the book as well as by Kickstarter, a crowd funding initiative that would
be communicated with the Bay area. Further details on the project will
be communicated with the membership when the Kickstarter project
goes live. Jean Lee moved and Jack Ryder seconded the proposal to
fund 1000 copies at the price quoted by the publisher (approximately
$6325, based on current exchange rates) Motion carried. Jean Lee then
moved, and Tom Perlite seconded, that Mary could set up the
Kickstarter project to facilitate fund raising to cover some of the
publishing costs.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9 pm.

The board voted to provide a special raffle ticket to members when
they pick up and wear their name tags at our meetings. A drawing
for a plant from the opportunity table will be limited to this and will
immediately follow the choice by the person who did the Skill
Session and the winner from the Show and Tell table. So, wearing
your name tag will get you an early selection from the opportunity
table. Your name tag will be available at the membership table.

SFOS Monthly Show and Tell Table
We want to thank our members who bring in their plants for display
at the monthly meetings. This is a great viewing experience for all
and a great way to learn about new plants we might want to try to
grow in the future for ourselves.
But did you know that you can bring in a blooming plant that you
might not be certain about the name or type and have our group of
experts help identify your plant? The more you know, the better your
chance of success. Thank you for participating and we'll see you
and your plants at the next monthly meeting.

Dear SFOS Members - Thank You!
We had joy and fun at the beautiful Orchids in the Park 2016 show!
There was a wonderful variety of orchid species, hybrids, and other
plants on display and for sale, as well as books, baskets, and a great
assortment of other related goodies - truly something for everyone.
Attendance was up, especially on Sunday, so the show was busy but
generally not too crowded, allowing time for people to ask questions
and talk, and it seemed like everyone had a good time.
Many thanks to Dave Hermeyer, Jean Lee, Jack Ryder, Tom Perlite,
Frances Larose, Dave Robison, Mary Gerritsen, and show committee
members for all of their help and suggestions.
Thanks to all of the vendors, donors, friends and volunteers whose

I would like to acknowledge everyone who brought and/or sold
plants at Member Plant Sales.
Terry & Margaret Boomer, Judy Carney, Chuck Chan, Mary
Gerritsen, Dean Haas, Dave Hermeyer,
Dexter Hodes, Tanya Lam, Lynne Murrell, and Bruce Rogers made
a superb contribution to Orchids in the Park 2016. Total sales were
$4501.00, the best ever in my experience. The net benefit to SFOS
and the Conservation Committee should be 1531.75, but actual
receipts were $333.45 less than the sales records. Thanks also to
our customers, who bought with such enthusiasm. I hope to see you
all again next year.

Note from the Prez
Floobydust, and Choices
Readers of this column may have noticed a recurring theme of
conservation in some past months.
While many of us may be interested in orchids solely for their beauty
or as an enjoyable hobby, it may be good to remember that two of
the purposes of SFOS are orchid conservation and preservation of
orchid habitat. Our orchid society does make occasional modest
grants to deserving individuals or organizations working to preserve
orchids of some specific region, and in that small way we are
helping to conserve the plants we love. But it may be good to reflect
on the importance of conservation not just to our ability to enjoy that
hobby, but to protect the whole environment that we all depend on
to live.
Global warming is a virtual certainty at this point, and species of
plants and animals are going extinct at an unprecedented rate.
Other factors, such as population growth, economic stratification,
and strain on water and energy resources, tie into that problem to
create an even more serious situation. It’s not a problem that has an
easy solution, but there are some clear directions we as a society
can move. Our present political situation is quite remarkable, with
presidential candidates presenting us with starkly contrasting
implications for the future of our environment, and perhaps even our
way of life.
I’d like to urge you all to consider the importance of this election and
to do whatever you can to support the candidate of your choice.
Take a little time to consider what you really want, what’s really
important to you, and the choices you have to make that happen.

President for the San Francisco Orchid Society Still Sought
The Society still has not fulfilled its need for a President for the term
June 2016 - June 2017. Not only is it awkward and inconvenient for the
board to do its work, but as a 501c3 my understanding is that the
society has a legal responsibility to fill the positions to maintain its
status as a nonprofit. I am currently investigating and asking about this.
Nevertheless, with over 200 members it would be wonderful to have
