November Speaker
Francisco Miranda
on Rupiculous Orchids of Brazil
Francisco Miranda was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 6, 1956. He earned
his degree in Biology and begun his taxonomic studies of the orchid family in 1981.
During the next 4 years, he lived most of the time in Manaus where he studied
Amazon orchids and started work on his Master’s degree. Shortly after returning
to Rio de Janeiro, he completed his Masters degree on Section Cattleyodes of the
genus Laelia. Upon finishing his college studies, his main interest has been Brazilian
Laelias and Cattleyas. Francisco is the author of several papers ranging from
species descriptions to subjects of growers’ interest in Brazilian, German and U.S.
publications. He is also author of two books. Francisco relocated to Haines City,
Florida, in 2000, where he operates Miranda Orchids, an orchid nursery
specializing in Brazilian species and the Cattleya Alliance. He will present
Rupiculous Orchids of Brazil to the SFOS.

POE Volunteer
Coordinators Needed
After years of excellent volunteer service, George Su, Tina
Saravia, and Elise Lew are retiring from their positions as cochairs of the Volunteer Committee. Their efforts have been
instrumental in the smooth running of the Pacific Orchid
Exposition, given the large number of volunteers we need in
the course of the show. This committee maintains the master
list of volunteers, oversees their check-in throughout the
show, and produces those wonderful badges we all wear.
Although George has volunteered to produce the badges
this year, the nuts and bolts work needs to be taken over by
a new group of people.
Folks with good people skills, organizational skills, and some
familiarity with Excel are needed. Having three co-chairs in
this committee has worked well, so no one person needs to
be there all weekend. The three outgoing co-chairs will be
willing to help you get up to speed in the months prior to
the show, and will provide some sort of manual based on
their experience with the committee. If you are interested in
taking on this responsibility, please get in touch with me.This
is an essential committee for the show, and a great way to
participate in the ongoing success of the SFOS.
Thank You!

SFOS NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2009 3
2010 Pacific Orchid Exposition – Carnaval!
The San Francisco Orchid Society is proud to be the envy
of the Bay Area as it hosts the 58th Pacific Orchid
Exposition, known throughout the world and considered
one of the most prestigious orchid shows in the United
States. Its reputation has been built by the diversity of the
species and hybrids that are showcased in its spectacular
displays. More than 20,000 people attend this annual
fundraiser that will be sponsored by KGO TV and the CBS
Radio network. Fun for all at the 2010 Pacific Orchid
Exposition’s CARNAVAL!
Over 150,000 orchid flowers from all over the globe are
displayed in educational exhibits from local, national and
international orchid growers, both professional and
amateur. These award winning plants will create a
whimsical environment because of their diversity in color,
shape and sizes. Each year a theme is selected to provide
a focus to the wonderful displays, and this year’s theme is
“CARNAVAL!”. Docent tours are provided to give people
deeper understanding of orchids and greater issues of land
use and conservation. Cultivation tips are given to
thousands as they escape into this magical orchid
extravaganza, perfectly combining aesthetics and
education.
Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants, and grow
in every part of the world. More than 50 commercial
growers will be displaying their unique species and rare
hybrids, allowing anyone who is a lover of nature the
chance to purchase a one-of-a-kind treasure to gaze at in
the comfort of the home, office, restaurant or shop.
The 2010 San Francisco Orchid Society’s Pacific Orchid
Expo is judged by local Society experts and judges from
throughout the country who are certified by the highly
respected American Orchid Society (AOS). For the first
time, the Gala Benefit party will take place on Friday,
February 26 and will include delicious appetizers and wine
tasting from numerous bay area wineries, including
varietals from winners of the 2010 San Francisco
Chronicle Wine Competition. The POE is proud to say
that this year it is considered the number one orchid show
in the country. Escape into this wonderland of beauty and
celebrate the amazing display of unusual and exotic
orchids.
