(The PSU council is in the process of revising its supervisory guidelines. As part of this, it seeks views from its
members (Pharmacists) on the various practice issues and how they can be improved/addressed. The input
given shall help guide the development of the supervisory guidelines/enable better practice matter handling

Current supervisory guidelines allow for
persons holding fulltime jobs to supervise
one Pharmacy, those in community to
supervise two Pharmacies, in internship
hospitals and academia two Pharmacies,
supervising industry and working in NDA
no Pharmacy etc .There is need to review
this if amendments/inclusions are required.
Currently

Pharmacies is done by the PSU regional
inspectors to help improve on the quality of
Pharmacy practice .Improvement has been
noted .However, challenges still remain
mainly in documentation and presence.
It is observed that over the last two years
Pharmacists are beginning to take up
medical representation jobs .This is a
positive step. However, there is need to
have guidelines for this practice.
It is observed that a number of Pharmacists
have began practicing as locum Pharmacists
in various Pharmacies. This is a positive
step and needs to be encouraged .However,
locum practice should not affect availability
of the Pharmacist where they supervise.
The most recent presence survey revealed
an 8% presence at the Pharmacies .There is
need
to
identify
mechanisms
of
strengthening Pharmacists presence.

Incidences of Pharmacies failing to pay
Pharmacists professional fees up to 6 months
have been observed. There is need to identify
and assess feasibility of mechanisms to
mitigate this.
