Moroccan Children’s Trust
The Moroccan Children’s Trust (MCT) is a small UK-registered charity, with a
board of directors drawn from the UK and Morocco. It aims to offer support
and assistance to disadvantaged families across southern Morocco, based on
community projects that empower local people to change their lives for the
better.
Taroudannt Street Children Project
In partnership with a local charity, Fondation Amane pour la Protection de
l’Enfance (FAPE), MCT coordinates a project which supports street-connected
children and their families in and around the town of Taroudannt, in
southern Morocco. The project currently employs a team of local staff based

at a drop-in centre in central Taroudannt: two social workers, three teachers,
an activities coordinator, a monitoring officer, an accountant and fundraiser,
two legal caseworkers, and a centre caretaker. Adopting a holistic approach,
the project supports the children and their families through relational social
work, case-work in important areas such as securing ID papers and access
to healthcare, women’s group, educational support sessions, a pre-school
class and sports activities. MCT has also run a successful pilot project of an
Identity Paper Project, working to secure birth registration for complicated
cases, provide professional training in communities in Taroudannt province
and raise awareness of the importance of birth registration in local
communities. The team is now advocating a set of recommendations to
make systemic change at the regional level.
Child Protection Advocacy
MCT’s vision is a Morocco in which all children can rely on effective and
appropriate child protection. Since launching the SCP in 2010 in the city of
Taroudannt, MCT and FAPE have taken on provincial and regional advocacy
of the creation and implementation of a multi-sector child protection
structure. This project focuses on working with local governmental and nongovernmental partners as well as international researchers, experts and
practitioners. MCT consistently takes on research initiatives to analyse the
needs of some of the most disadvantaged children and their families and to
evaluate the best methods to implement a robust child protection system.
One of these major current projects is a regional fostering service and a
transitional care centre for children who are in abusive home environments.
