RIPPONLEA P.S. Newsletter No. 14 25 May 2015 Our vision is for the children of Ripponlea to be global and creative thinkers who are empowered with the skills and empathy to engage with an ever-changing world. They care, they create, they connect. Carrington Grove, East St Kilda. 3183 School Phone: 9527 5728 School Fax: 9527 6503 Email: ripponlea.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au Website: www.ripponleaps.vic.edu.au May Ripper Art (Friday 29) Monday 25 F – 2 Swimming Art Attack (Saturday 30) ***** School Council 7:30pm Tuesday 26 District X-Country Wednesday 27 F – 2 Swimming Ripper Art is our major fundraising event for the year and since 1999, it is held every ‘odd’ year, alterna ting with our school fete every ‘even’ year. It could not be achieved without the tireless work of passionate and committed parents, who willingly volunteer their time and skills to benefit the whole school community. Two such parents who deserve particular mention and thanks in this regard are Andrea Rutherford and Michelle Loft. Both Andrea and Michelle have done an incredible job combining the talents of parent teams to produce this year’s Art Auction and Art Attack respectively. Andrea has spent many hours planning the Ripper Art event, sourced a wide range of material from our parent and other artists and will transform the Barrbunin into an Art Gallery for the auction on Friday 29. Also on view and for sale will be a piece of art work completed by your child during Art this term. Thanks Miss Kate for your support with this. Michelle has created and prepared hours of fun for students on Saturday 30. Amongst other activities at the last Art Attack, students painted a mosaic wall above the taps and a graffiti Music room sign was made and displayed. Next week we will marvel at the art installations created by our student and parent community from recycled materials, as their impact on our school grounds will be significant. ***** National Simultaneous Story Time Friday 29 F-2 Swimming ***** Winter Sport 4 ***** Art Auction Saturday 30 Art Attack June Monday 1 Art Attack Children’s Exhibition Award Assembly 3.00pm Tuesday 2 Division X-Country Wednesday 3 On behalf of all at RPS, THANKYOU Andrea and Michelle (and your teams of parents) for all you have done to ensure this weekend will be a success. Year 5/6 students and a team of staff returned safely and exhausted from their education tour of Canberra last week. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government will contribute $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. This event is now embedded into our school’s Camping program and will be held every other year for our senior students. See you at the Ripper Art Auction and Art Attack day. Helping Nepal ‘Brick by Brick’ Over the next two weeks the 3/4 students are organising a whole school fundraiser, raising money to send to victims of the earthquakes in Nepal. They have called the campaign ‘How Nepalling’ and will be collecting donations in $5 amounts to help UNICEF rebuild communities. Students will come around to classes each morning to collect donations, and your donation will be shown in a creative wall display outside the office. Look out for more information on your year blogs and around the school. Thanks in advance for your support! Stationery for Vanuatu Once again we have found someone who has been able to organise free freight to a country in need. After a disaster, one of the priorities is to return children to some level of ‘normality’ as soon as possible. Getting back to school is one way of not only getting children to re-engage with their learning but also an opportunity for them to reconnect with friends and other children. The Ministry of Education in Vanuatu has identified a number of priorities to get this happening. The one area I believe we are well placed to make a contribution to is that of stationery. There will now be another box in the hall near my office for stationery items. If you can add an item or two - it would be greatly appreciated. Calling all interested ski or snowboarding families to participate and race in the Victorian Interschools Skiing Competition. The competition for Juniors is held at Mt Buller from Monday 24 August till Wednesday 26 August. Last year, RPS fielded our first Victorian Interschools Ski Team, with the school proudly represented by only 1 ski racer; Saskia Dennis-Cross. This year we would love to introduce some more families to the fun of Interschools racing. Check out the Victorian Interschools Snowsports website: http://vicinterschools.com.au/ In the Interschools competition, there are races for Grades 3 / 4 and Grades 5 / 6, Snowboard (Grand Slalom and BoarderX) and Ski (Grand Slalom, SkierX and Moguls). Kids can enter disciplines and races of their choice. Parents will be responsible for their children at all times and must always also be skiing with their child. Entrants need to be able to confidently and competently ski or snowboard but do not need to be an expert, fun and participation is the focus. The school is fully supportive of entering a team, but will be taking no responsibility for supervising students, arranging training or race entry. Parents will be responsible for all costs associated with racing and skiing. If you would like to hear more, please contact Julian by email: Julian@transformstrategists.com.au
