Over an hour-long conversation just before the release of her film Queen, she spoke to us about her hippy mother, her uncompromising sister, Mallika, and why she has chosen to take a break for now with her relationship with Karan Bhojwani. Excerpts: How did you become an actor? I was born in Chennai, but when I was six months old, my parents moved to Australia. I had not been in India long enough to recognize faces so could not recognize him till he came up to me and asked me my name and said, ‘You are a very beautiful girl’. That’s when I realized that it was Anil Kapoor as he just said hello, introduced himself and left. Next day, he went home and told his daughter Sonam about me who told him, ‘Papa, I know Lisa, she is Karan bhaiya’s best friend’s (Karan Bhojwani’s) girlfriend’. Anil was producing Aisha and a year later, the Aisha team got in touch with my agency and I bagged my first role. You have not done very many films. Shah Rukh and Juhi were both friends as well as partners in business and Bobby became both the CEO of Shah Rukh’s company Red Chillies Entertainments as well as a friend of Shah Rukh before going into coma. There was a time when SRK would visit Bobby every day in the hospital, until a few years ago, when he appointed a new CEO Venky Mysore to replace Bobby as he continued to be in coma. Juhi was very attached to her brother. In a recent interview, every time the discussion of her brother came up, her eyes were full of tears and she would become speechless. She had said, “My emotional anchor was my mom. But I lost her in a car accident a year after my marriage. A few years later, my dad became sick and I lost him too. My brother, Bobby, is eight years older than me. As kids, he and I’d fight like cats and dogs. He would push me and I’d go flying and would hate him for it. He, initially, moved to Delhi to work, but then returned to Mumbai to build a career. After losing her, my brother became my anchor. I thought he’d be there with me through thick and thin, but he has been in coma for a few years now. BUZZSTOP about the film’s concept. It is set during the great Bombay mill strike and the gangster era of the ’80s.” Amit, who is confident about the film’s content and Atul’s vision, feels this movie could work out very well for Bollywood. He agrees with Kunal that the script has immense boxoffice potential and, at the same time, it is very international in context. This is the first time a production house based in Kolkata is producing a Hindi film of such magnitude. The film, which is heading to the Cannes and Venice film festival, stars Jimmy Shergill and Raghu Ram in principal roles. Amit informs that Jimmy will be seen essaying the part of a powerful underworld don in the film, while Raghu Ram will play the mill workers’ union leader. A family entertainer, the film also deals with the sensitive issue of lost childhood. The plight of children growing up in the strife-torn days has been captured in the film, the director informs. When asked if Raghu’s character was modelled on the life of Union leader Datta Samant, Amit refused to comment. ishwarya Rai Bachchan has topped the list of 20 most searched successful Indian women on Google, followed by Vidya Balan and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, an official statement said. Manju Jumrani of Hari Om Dabbawala, who began her tiffin service three years back, is currently serving 100 patrons. Her USP? Shuddh Rajasthani khana. “We began by making meals for our distant family members. Thanks to word-of-mouth publicity, we now serve 100 people,” says Manju. At `60 per meal, the menu — which keeps varying — includes gatte ki sabzi, dal-chawal, chhole, rajma, aloo matar, gobi ki sabzi and churma. “The day gatte ki sabzi is From Gujarati, Rajasthani and Italian to satvik and diabetic, tiffin services in Kolkata are packing more than food in every dabba. What’s more, the meals are categorized into basic (`90), executive (`120) and royal (`135-140). Says Ameet Thakkar from the tiffin service, “The Gujarati thali includes dal, chawal, roti, aloo ki sabzi, mithai, papad, pickles. The recipes vary as per taste. So, a Gujarati dal is sweeter than its North Indian counterpart. Also, there’s more use of mustard in Bengali dishes. There’s growing demand for variety.” There are plenty of takers for Marwari khana too, says Rani Jain of Rani’s Kitchen. “Every day, we whip up dal-chawal, rotisabzi, salad, dahi vada and achar for 50 people. Each meal costs `75. Special menus include lachha parantha, pulao and chutney,” she says.
