The Holy Spirit’s arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it’s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on His disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is no less true for us. —————Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS A SPECIAL VISITOR A brief note to say thanks a million to all of you for the hundreds of letters, cards, notes, Mass cards, expressions of support, love and sympathy over the past few months since the death of my sister Maureen. Yall have been so supportive once again. I honestly had the good intention of dropping each one of you a postcard or note. I know that's not going to happen now. ( Those cows are extremely demanding!!!!) However your good pastor, Fr Cuddy has given me permission to concelebrate the Masses on Sunday May 31st. I will be there in person to say thanks again for all your love and encouragement. In the meantime may God bless all of you and you continue to be in my prayers. Life on the farm is good....very relaxing( and hard work too). I love yall; see you soon. Mooooo…——Fr. Louis Lohan Next weekend (May 30-May 31), the diocese has asked us to take up a collection for Catholic Communications. There are envelopes for this purpose on the display cases in back of church or you may use a plain envelope (also found on the display cases). Your generosity to help fund newspaper and other media resources to spread the word of the Catholic Church to the people of God will be greatly appreciated. My grandparents were married in St. Thomas in 1915, the year St. Thomas became a parish. Since then, there have been many ‘Carrubbas’ volunteering in some way at St. Thomas; I feel quite sure there will continue to be. Through the years I have had the opportunity to serve in a number of capacities: Building and Rebuilding Committees, CALB Secretary, Chairperson for the Fall Festival several times, Finance Administration Board, Maintenance and Purchasing, Pastoral Council, Volunteer Staff and Wedding Coordinator. I remember a few days after “the storm”, Father Louis was wondering where we would have Mass. He, as always, wanted to bring God’s people together. Living across the street from Quarles School, I suggested we have an outdoor Mass on the vacant school lot. With the help of many of you, we set up and had our Mass. This was the first religious service in our community after the storm. People of the many other faiths as well as Catholics were in attendance. For a number of weeks after Katrina, my living room served as the Sanctuary, housing the priest’s vestments as well as the Tabernacle and Blessed Sacrament. Those visiting the sick would stop by daily and pick up a consecrated host to take to the shut-ins. Serving as Chairperson of the Liturgical Design Team after Katrina, I traveled to Pennsylvania and assisted in selecting furnishings for our new church from churches closing in the Scranton Diocese. The round-faceted windows from our pyramid church were all that survived Katrina. Heading up the 50 person team for the removal of these windows to store and save for our new church was an easy task with so many willing to help in any way needed or possible. As a member of the RCIA Team since 1992, I have watched, helped nurture, guide and be with a lot of you as you walked your journey into the Catholic Faith. The office in which I have served and is the most near and dear to my heart will always be my position as Director of Liturgy at St. Thomas. “I love my Catholic Faith; I love my St. Thomas Church.” What I will miss most is working with all of you as we prepare for our Liturgies. You have been my dear friends, my extended family. It has been a wonderful time in my life. Thank you for the pleasure, honor and blessing to serve with you. ———Paula ROSARY BEFORE ALL MASSES IN MAY The Rosary begins 25 minutes before Mass is to start. ADULT SCRIPTURE STUDY—HAIL MARY MAY 27, LAST WEDNESDAY, 7PM Why is Mary so important to our Catholic faith? We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, and in the Rosary. We honor her with special feasts and place images of her in our churches and in our homes. Join us during May as we will look at scripture and the catechism to explore the roles of Mary in the Church: Mary as Mother of God, as our mother, as co-redeemer with her Son, and as Queen of Heaven. Sessions are held each Wednesday in May, starting May 6th and running through May 27th, in room B22 (2nd floor, NE corner of the Parish Office Complex). No preregistration is necessary.
