Praise and Worship………………………………………………………… Prayer ……………………………………………………………………… Call to Worship Blessed Creator, as we come to praise and adore you, gather our hearts beyond our differences of personal, social, and economic status that we might worship in a spirit of unity and thanksgiving. Let us worship God! Responsive Reading Pastor: Most honorable Creator, help us express gratitude for all those we meet, that we might not let the trappings of class separate them or us from your love. Congregation: Knowing that the first shall be last and the last shall be first, bless us to raise the awareness of our churches and larger communities to always treat each other with dignity. Pastor: Whether rich or poor, educated or illiterate, talented or mediocre, churched or unchurched, we are all your children; none is superior or inferior for we all belong to you. Congregation: Bless us with a pride in the reality of your generosity and your file over us; give us discerning power so that we will not be trapped by exalted priced in material things and in position accorded us in this life. 3 May 24, 2015 Pastor: Whether rich or poor in goods or spirit, no place in life can offset the guilt we feel when we bring harm to our neighbor, and therefore, harm to the beauty of creation. ALL: May gifts, privilege, position, and accomplishments never separate us from our true selves, from the love of Christ Jesus, and from the anointing power of the Holy Spirit. Class is a way people define social groupings based on social relations, how people make money, how they determine what is important to them, their access to power, cultural privilege, and status in the community. We can figure out persons’ class by determining where they attended school,, their occupation, what they consider to be recreational or cultural events, how they dress, and what parts of society they have access to. Money is not the only determinant of class, though it is significant. How one relates to travel, vacations, geography, and history; the amount of exposure one has had to cultural activities like music, art, books, theater, and museums; and how one is able to make connections between facts learned are all related to one’s class. How one uses verbal and body language is based on social relationships, which are indicators of class. One’s class does not make one more intellectual or morally superior. Class happens to be indicator of how people relate to the world and is quite complicated. Rich people can be poor in spirit, and poor people can be rich in finding joy in life despite their circumstances. Both rich and poor can be victims. One’s class status does not indicate how hard one works. Poor people often work incredibly hard for little money God does not love us more or less because of class. This category of potential and possible discrimination, which we designate as “class,” is devised by human beings. God loves each of us unconditionally, not as members of a “class.” What’s in our pocketbooks, who we know, and what we have access to be irrelevant. God Bless, Pastor 5 May 24, 2015 NOTES ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ 6 May 24, 2015 MINISTRY OF PRAYER Dylan Adams Shareese Banks JoAnn Boyd Agnes Brumfield Kerry Clark Naomi Fiebig Kevin Foulks James Freeman Rosa Gaghagen Deborah Garrett Ercell Gathright Althea Hickman Elizabeth King Betty Logan Shelia McCormick Marvin Montague Patricia Simmons in Washington, DC Kay Taylor-Myers MILITARY Marvin Hudson/Navy MEMORIAL DAY IS MONDAY, MAY 25!
