JYLIAN GUSTLIN
BIO / ARTIST STATEMENT
FIGURES:
After completing her BFA, Jylian fused her understanding of computers and her passion for
art to become a graphics programmer and art director for Apple Computer. Gustlin is now a
full-time artist, which enables her to combine the effects of modern technology with
traditional techniques of painting. Her artwork often conveys the same complex layered
effects possible in computer programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Gustlin
experiments with a variety of materials to discover their effects. Working with two-part
epoxy resin, oil and acrylic paints, charcoal, wax, gold leaf, pastel and graphite on board,
Gustlin draws, paints and scratches on her surfaces.
Gustlin's artwork is both broad and deep, spanning many styles and media, all the while
being prolific within each style. She paints a wide range of abstracted figures, a
mathematical series based on Fibonacci numbers, landscapes, abstract art, vessels, urban
ruins and street scenes, animals, and portraits. Her base media is also broad, with most
works on wood panel, but also working with canvas, fabrics, paper, photographic collage,
sculpture, and recycled materials.
Figures are the foundation of Gustlin’s repertoire. She bases each figurative series on Latin
concepts: Her "Kyros" series come from the word "Kronos", with structured linear segments
serving metaphorically as the timeline in which her figures exist. Her "Bivium" series means
"path", where her figures turn to choose directions in life, while looking thoughtfully at the
other ways they might venture instead. Her characters are frequently set in an alien-like
landscape, moody and brooding, yet at the same time, depicting a sense of future and a
complexity of their past. Her figures are vibrant mixes of color and texture, as if to
transcend race, ethnicity, even evolutionary life form. Each piece poses existential
questions on the choices we make in life and our emotional existence.
FIBONACCI SERIES:
Fibonacci numbers and the Fibonacci sequence are prime examples of how mathematics is
connected to seemingly unrelated things. These numbers were first introduced in 1202 in
Fibonacci's book Liber abaci. The ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8,
13 . . ., each number being the sum of the previous two numbers) approaches the golden
ratio, as the sequence gets infinitely long. Pythagoras discovered this Golden ratio, and the
ancient Greeks incorporated it into their art and architecture.
The Fibonacci numbers appear constantly in nature, from the growth of buds on trees, to
starfish, spiral seashells, petals on flowers, and parts of many fruits and vegetables. They
are evident in the growth of life, from a single cell to humans. The Fibonacci series is often
called the "Divine Proportion", as it relates to the proportions of many life forms, including
mankind.
Jylian Gustlin captures the Fibonacci series in these paintings. Each row and column (X and
Y plane) creates a Fibonacci number, with her own painterly editing of select circles to stay
true to the proper mathematics. Additionally, she paints Fibonacci circles going back in

depth on the Z plane, with each circle being a Fibonacci sequence of circles painted on top
of each other, adding spectacular depth and texture to these works. Gustlin's Fibonacci
works are an amazing collision of art, mathematics and history, and are created with all the
intense, complicated color palettes and textures that are Gustlin's signature painting style.
