Attendance – EVERY DAY COUNTS
Congratulations to both 1M and 5W for achieving the most improved junior and senior class attendance for Term 1. These classes have been
rewarded with the opportunity to select the transition song to be played at the end of each play time for the next 4 weeks.
This Term saw the introduction of the 100% Attendance Wristbands. The 154 students who achieved 100% attendance for Term 1 were
rewarded with attendance bands at year level parades. We acknowledge what a super effort this is for these students. To receive these
bands the 154 student came to school all day every day for 10 weeks. We are very proud of the following Cairns West Super Attenders:

NAPLAN Testing is due to take place next Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May for all
students in Year 3 and 5. It is very important that all students arrive at school on time and that they
are ready to take the tests. You can help us by ensuring that your children have a good night sleep,
have a healthy breakfast and get to school by 8:30am each day. The classroom teachers have worked
very hard to ensure that their students are well prepared for NAPLAN. I wish the students well and
look forward to receiving the results later this year.

Everyday counts at CWSS. Students attending school every day on time is critical in setting your child
up for success in life. Next week we will be reviewing which of our students have reached 95%
attendance for the past 5 weeks of school. These students will be invited to join our Academic
Success Guarantee program. This is an agreement between students, families and school to ensure
children who are attending school regularly, reach year level benchmarks. Please help us in assisting
your child’s development by sending your child to school every day. Keep an eye out for further ASG
information coming out soon and please feel free to speak to a staff member regarding this program.
Hoping this finds everyone enjoying some slightly cooler evenings and beautiful sunny days.
If your child has been amongst the classes that have had to relocate to ‘Cairns West Tiny Town’,
congratulations on your efforts negotiating the new areas and thank you for continuing to find us in
the Tuck Shop.
Next term will be our Multi-Cultural Festival. This is our biggest social event of the year which is
supported and enjoyed by many. This event is on Friday 28th August. If you would like to be part of
the working committee for this event or would like to help out in any way with this event you are
very welcome. There are opportunities to assist are in many areas. We require craft items and
assistance on individual stalls, either in the preparation or management on the evening.

Fiona from The Lady Gowrie Waratah Drive Child Centre was at our last Big Breakfast. The centre
has recently reopened after some months of refurbishment. This centre shares a fence on the oval
with Cairns West and they are advertising vacancies in most areas. Our school is working to form
stronger relationships with the child care centres in our area and hoping to raise the benefits for
children to access kindergarten programs prior to starting school.

Year 5 and Year 6 Cooking and Life Skills programmes have been busy preparing for a special
Mother’s Day Morning tea during their weekly sessions this term. Mums were treated to a delightful
morning tea, with freshly baked scones jam and cream, sausage rolls, butterfly cakes and a banana
cake. It was a pleasure watching these students move confidently around the kitchen, and show
such care and kindness in welcoming our guests. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all for this Sunday.
