Sixty-two percent of adults 65 years and older have limitations with basic or complex activities. In addition to greater
functional limitations leading to possible disability, less physical activity can lead to increased risk of chronic diseases
and mortality. Proper exercise can increase reserve capacity in older adults with sedentary lifestyles, thereby
affecting the secondary aging process as well as increase aerobic capacity and muscle strength which leads to
improved function. Rehabilitation professionals are experts in movement science and should play an integral role in
prescription of appropriate physical activity to ensure maximal levels of success with older adults.
Older adults can pose unique challenges for clinicians due to their sedentary lifestyle and potential for complex
medical history. This uniquely interactive workshop is filled with functional assessment and treatment strategies to
facilitate successful outcomes in older adults. By combining evidence-based principles of exercise prescription with
psychological strategies to motivate the most resistant geriatric client, participants will learn and practice training
methods that are both effective and justifiable as medically necessary.
