CCAC Mission Statement Student Dialog Report Allegheny Campus, Braddock Hills Center, South Campus, Boyce Campus, North Campus Roslynne Wilson, Kelli Maxwell, Yvonne Burns, Kristin Spiker As a follow‐up to the Mission Dialog with employees, the Deans of Student Development asked students to share their thoughts about the current CCAC mission statement. Q1. What are the strengths of the current mission statement? • • • • • • • “Gives me full opportunity to succeed and prosper in my life and contribute to today’s society” Affordable Quality education Accessible Equality Diverse • Academic Dynamic Professional Supportive learning environment STUDENT DIALOG Q2. What is missing from the current mission statement? About students: • International students • Traditional/non‐traditional students • More than just a learning environment; melting pot of cultures; of politics, video games, music and hobbies, • Character is missing STUDENT DIALOG Q2. What is missing … Experience at CCAC • • • • • • Why do we exist? • Safe, clean Positive outcomes • Technology Help to reach goals Diversity in classes, campuses Flexible Need more staff for students STUDENT DIALOG Q2. What is missing … After CCAC • Jobs • Community involvement • First step/foundation • Transfer • Workforce “Students should want to do more than just transfer” STUDENT DIALOG Q2. What is missing … Issues with the wording • It is not concise • Statement is boring • Use comparable instead of ‘dynamic’ • What are the standards of affordability? • Mission is fine as is STUDENT DIALOG Q3. Are there aspects of the current mission statement that are no longer relevant? • • • • • • Global society, online learning Supportive learning environment Not diverse at BHC No longer affordable Professors don’t care about students International students really need help STUDENT DIALOG Q3. Are there aspects of the current mission statement that are no longer relevant? Issues with the wording • The statement is vague • How do you measure ‘dynamic’? • Diverse – refers to what? Culture, services? • Whole thing is too long • Everything is still relevant STUDENT DIALOG TUDENT DIALOG Thoughts and Observations • Students were unaware that CCAC is guided by a mission prior to the session • Students were focused on their experiences and are able to relate the mission …it was more difficult to discuss what was missing or irrelevant STUDENT DIALOG Thoughts and Observations • Students respond to student‐centered staff, faculty, administrators • Students are concerned that other students aren’t aware of or don’t take advantage of all CCAC has to offer STUDENT DIALOG Thoughts and Observations • Mention employment • One‐college concept is not consistently applied. • Formatting of the statement STUDENT DIALOG Thank you!
