Words From Wilshire is sent via email to all of our families. If you are not receiving the email version,
please email Cindy Ridge to be added to the contact list: cridge@stanthony.k12.mn.us
Dear Families, I would like to sincerely thank Tara Halverson, our WPPA President for her commitment
to our school community at Wilshire Park. I am truly grateful to Tara and to all of you
for contributing your time and talent to make Wilshire Park a welcoming community.
Most officers are continuing in their role for next year: Tara Halverson, President;
Natalie Dougherty, Vice President; Pam Metcalf, Secretary; and Michelle SteinleyBumgarner, treasurer. Laura Oksnevad, Volunteer Coordinator will be handing over her
duties to Alisa Bartel for the 2015-16 school year. New ideas and enthusiasm have kept
the WPPA group strong, vibrant, and always supporting students at Wilshire Park. If you
haven’t made it to a meeting, I would encourage you to check out the group next year in the fall. It is a
great way to stay connected to what is happening at Wilshire Park.
Welcome Grandparents! The evening of Tuesday, May 12th, grandparents are invited to come to
Wilshire Park with their grandchild. Classrooms will be open from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and a short activity
will be planned in the room for students and their grandparents (or special adult friend). At 6:30 p.m.
parents may join the fun with our annual ice cream social, art show, Scholastic Book Fair, bicycle helmet
sale and used book swap. Students will be able to show off their classrooms and desks to grandparents
until 6:30 p.m. and then from 6:30-7:30 p.m. invite their grandparent or special adult friend to stroll the
hallways with them while enjoying free Culvers custard and the incredible art on display throughout the
building. Parents are also invited to the Ice Cream Social and Art Show from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Please give
grandparents the information and attached flyer so they can plan on attending the evening of Tuesday,
May 12th. Parking on Tuesday evening is going to be a bit challenging due to nearby road construction.
Elmwood Church at 3615 Chelmsford Road is kindly allowing us to use their parking lot for overflow
parking. Please plan to carpool if possible and consider dropping off grandparents near Door 1, 2, or 3
and park at Elmwood Church or side streets where there isn’t construction happening. Be advised that
parking on the east side of Highcrest is limited and not signed well that there is no parking for specific
areas. We are excited to explore new ways for our students to proudly show their families their
classrooms and show off their artistic creations!
The end of a school year can be quite a busy time. I have enjoyed seeing our students’ year-end
performances with more still to come. I am so proud of our students and it is so fun to see our teachers
enjoying these last few weeks with our awesome kids!

• Thank you, thank you, thank you to WPPA and all parents, guardians and
students who provided treats and small gifts every day this past week for staff
appreciation. As staff members, we are truly humbled to be part of your
childrens’ lives.
• A BIG thank you from the playground supervisors for all of the wonderful
boxes of sidewalk chalk donated for the kids. If you get a chance, take a walk on the
playground to see what joy and opportunity for creativity this has brought to the children.
Thank you from Jolene Hodson, Volunteer Coordinator:
The Volunteer Event on May 1st was very well-attended! Thank you to our
200 registered volunteers who have logged about 6,400 hours of volunteer help
this year! (We still have 4 weeks of school left to go – so keep on coming,
please!) Thanks for all you’ve done for our students and Staff.
This year our volunteers were treated to an afternoon of painting with artists
from Wine and Canvas down in the Village. What a treat it was for all of us to
take home a beautiful masterpiece of our own! Wine and Canvas has also been
supportive of our own art program here at school, having made art supply
donations to Mrs. Frudden for your kids to continue to express themselves!
Thank them if you see them around town, or consider spending an evening
with them at their studio trying it yourselves!
Whether you helped us out in school, at home, or chaperoning our many field
trips, I hope you have all enjoyed your volunteer time here this year, and also
our “thank you” event. It’s a small way for us to thank you for your countless
hours of help over this past school year. I hope you all have a restful summer
with your families, and I’ll look forward to seeing you back again in the Fall.
Jolene Hodson
Volunteer Coordinator

class. Please remind your child on the days they have Physical Education to wear or bring

class. It is very important that children have the proper footwear on when they are taking
part in activities to avoid injury. Thank you for helping our program to be successful!
Fitness Testing Scores: In past years, fitness scores have been sent home. Unfortunately
this year we are having technical issues with the program. We are in the process of
getting this restored. Therefore, we will not be sending home the form this year. If you
have any questions please contact Mr. Allison or Mrs. Egan.

School-based Mental Health Continues to be offered in the District
Throughout the Summer Months
Summer is quickly approaching and challenges may arise before the school year gets started in
the fall. School-based mental health services are available in the summer to help with challenges,
if they do arise.
School-based mental health therapy is an opportunity available to all students and families in the
St. Anthony School District. Two therapists from Nystrom & Associates, Ltd. work in the district
to offer individual and family therapy for a variety of mental health issues including depression,
anxiety, family change, drug/alcohol use, trauma, peer conflicts, etc.
The services are comparable to receiving outpatient therapy in a mental health clinic, but we
provide services in the schools to aide in convenience and accessibility. Appointments are
scheduled as frequently as needed (typically once a week or every other week). We do our best
to accommodate family and student schedules.
Like an outpatient clinic visit, we bill each student’s insurance company for services. We also
have access to Hennepin County funding which can be utilized for students who are
uninsured/underinsured. Since the nature of this work requires we maintain confidentiality, no
information will be shared with the school unless we have written permission by the
student/parent.
Please call or email if interested in these services.

Safety Hazard: Highcrest Road as Drop-Off/Pick-up Location
Please do NOT drop your child off for school on Highcrest Road in front of school or use
Highcrest Road as a pickup after school unless you have parked your car in a safe location
located southeast from the building on the east side of the street. We are concerned for the safety
of students being dropped off on either side of Highcrest directly across from the school with
cars stopping and children crossing. Please use the parking lot, Elmwood church or 36th Ave
(alongside the playground) for student drop-off.

5th Grade Recognition - 5th Grade parents!
From the Nurse’s Office - Spring Safety
As the weather gets warmer, children will be playing outdoors riding bikes,
skateboards, scooters, and rollerblading. Children should wear helmets
during these kinds of activities. All bike riders should wear helmets
(including adults). Children are more likely to wear helmets if they see their
parents wearing them. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury
by 85%. Make sure helmets fit properly. It should sit level on your head not
cocked towards the back of your head. The chin strap should fit snuggly.
Use the foam pads to adjust the fit if necessary. If you struggle to get your child to wear a
helmet, make it mandatory. If he won’t wear a helmet, he won’t be able to ride the bike. Or
make a new family rule: No one rides their bike without a helmet, including the adults. There
will be a helmet sale in the Wilshire Park gym on Tuesday, May 12th along with the ice cream
social and book fair. Helmets will be $15 for good quality Schwinn Bike helmets. This is a
great value! Please see attached flyer for more details.

Happy 70th Anniversary St. Anthony!
Help us celebrate the 70th anniversary of the city of St. Anthony! The St. Anthony Historical
Society is asking students and families to share their stories by completing one of the project
ideas: draw a picture of your home; take a photo of homes on your block and find out when they
were built; compare prices from 1945 to 2014; find and draw a picture of a home built before
1945; interview someone who has lived in the village for decades; share your story of how your
family moved to St. Anthony. Or if you do not live in St. Anthony draw a picture of our school
or your favorite park in St. Anthony Village. You may use the attached form for your
submission and return to Mrs. Miller at Wilshire Park.
All submissions will be on display at VillageFest in August. Questions? Contact Erica Crone at
