COURSE DESCRIPTION
The goals of the New York Clinical Lipid Forum are to provide clinicians,

1 U
pdates on topics in the management and prevention of cardiovascular
disease in patients living with HIV
2 C
ase presentations, Expert Panel Discussions and Q & A to allow
interactive dialogue among attendees
STATEMENT OF NEED
With the use of antiretroviral therapy, HIV has become a more chronic disease
and those infected are living to ages where cardiovascular disease is more
prevalent and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Medical care providers
for these patients may not have the experience or knowledge in diagnosis
and management of risk factors, in particular dyslipidemia, to prevent manifest
disease. This educational forum will offer a unique and “first-of-its-kind” service
helping to fill a gap in care for patients living with HIV by providing both
clinical information and recent research as well as a forum for discussion and
interaction among cardiovascular, lipid and HIV experts and providers in the
NYC metropolitan area.
OBJECTIVES
After attending this activity, participants will be able to:
D
emonstrate the growing importance of cardiovascular care for patients
who are infected with HIV
F
acilitate regular practice of baseline lipid testing, diagnosis of familial
hypercholesterolemia, and routine follow up for patients infected with HIV
Instruct providers on how to determine appropriate LDL-cholesterol targets
and treat with medications
Provide
information on how to diagnose and manage hypertriglyceridemia
using both lifestyle modification and medications
E
xamine best practices for the recognition of coronary artery disease, heart
failure, and arrhythmia in patients living with HIV
Instruct providers on cardiovascular side effects of antiretroviral medications
for HIV and Hepatitis C
