At Second Street Community School, we are committed to be a respectful,
joyful, and safe learning environment where we all strive to be our best.
National Volunteer Week
“A volunteer action is like a stone thrown in a lake: its effect has a direct impact. At the same time, like ripples, volunteer efforts reach
out far and wide to improve communities. Undeniably, volunteers rock.”
The Canadian National Volunteer Week – April 12th to 18th – is a time to recognize and celebrate the efforts
of volunteers nationwide.
Volunteers are the selfless individuals who demonstrate their genuine
compassion for the well-being of others by taking action and making a difference. A Community School
has unique programming designed to meet the specific educational, recreational and social needs of the
neighbourhood it serves. At 2nd Street, we are fortunate to have involvement of our families and
community partnerships to support this vision. This year’s campaign theme is: Volunteers are part of the
ripple effect.
Areas that you could become more involved at 2 nd Street include:
 Attending monthly Community Council Meetings
 Volunteering at Council sponsored fund-raising events
 Reading with children
 Coaching and/or driving students to district sporting events
On behalf of the students and staff at 2nd Street, a heartfelt “Thank you” for all of your efforts to help make
our school a better place. If you would like to volunteer at school, please do not hesitate to ask…no effort
is too small!
Student Led Conferences - Student Led Conferences will be held on Wednesday, April 22nd and Thursday,
April 23rd. Early dismissal for Wednesday, April 22nd and Thursday, April 23rd will be at 2:00pm. A letter will
be coming home shortly for your choice of conference times.

Choir Festival. The performance will take place at 9:30am at Michael J. Fox Theatre,

TRACK & FIELD INFORMATION
It’s track and field season, and at 2nd Street we are fortunate to have special
track coaches from the Harry Jerome Track Association assisting our teachers
on Wednesday and Friday track practices. See the April 2015 calendar for
scheduled practice dates and times.

show off their amazing and diverse talents. Students from kindergarten to grade 7 will be showing off their
singing, dancing, instrumental, and acting skills.

Council meetings, we learn about and discuss current issues in the school and district, share ideas, and
plan events. Everyone is welcome. Daycare will be provided upon request, please inform the Community
Office by 9:30 am on Tuesday.
REPORT CARD REMINDER
Parents/Guardians – after you have read your child’s report card, PLEASE SIGN AND
RETURN THE REPORT CARD ENVELOPE to your child’s teacher.
LUNCH HOUR ROCK CONCERT
Parents are welcome to 2nd Street’s 1st Rock Concert on Thursday, April 9th in the
gym. The concert will start at approximately 12:20. The students are performing 2
songs and staff will also be performing 2 songs. And the grand finale will be a
performance by both students and staff. Don’t miss out on this!
SUCCESSFUL 2ND STREET SHREDDING EVENT
Thank you to the families in our school community as well as many other school
communities that came out to support 2nd Street’s Shredding Event. It was a very
successful event and we plan on scheduling another one for next year. Monies
raised went towards upgrading our Earthquake Preparedness equipment for the
school. So save any papers that need to be disposed of confidentially and 1800-shredding will be on back on site.
TELEPHONES, ELECTRONICS, TOYS, AND SPORTS EQUIPMENT AT SCHOOL
Students are requested NOT to bring electronic equipment to school. There is a risk of either losing or
having it damaged. Many students have electronic games, as well as iPods, MP3 players, and telephones.
We request that these items remain at home. At times students need their phone to contact parents at the
end of the day. School Staff ask that students store them away during the school day and get permission
with a phone pass to use the telephone available in the office. Please make sure that students know that if
they bring toys or sports equipment to school, they are at risk of losing or damaging these items. The school
is not responsible for lost or damaged items. We thank you for your assistance and cooperation with these
issues.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS PICKING UP STUDENTS DURING CLASS TIME
Parents/guardians are reminded that if you need to pick your children up early during class time, you must
pick them up and “sign them out” from the office. Please remember to send a note (in the planner) with
your child to the teacher in the morning informing the teacher of early dismissal. This will assist in planning in
order to minimize classroom disruption. Please do not ask children to wait outside for you as they are not
supervised as this is a safety issue.
SPECIAL LUNCH DAYS
A reminder that our next Pizza Day is Thursday, April 16th.
SPIRIT DAY
Our next spirit day is on Friday, April 24th – it’s WACKY HAIR day! Wear a wig, change your
hairstyle dramatically, wear ribbons and bows, add some colour…show your school spirit!!
JEANS DAY – 25th ANNIVERSARY - Thursday, April 30th
On Jeans Day we will be wearing jeans for BC’s kids!
The Jeans Day buttons will be here again and this year they are
celebrating their 25th Anniversary. Mark your calendar: On April
30, 2015, thousands of people across British Columbia and the
Yukon will participate in one of the easiest and most fun fundraisers ever - Jeans Day!!
What is Jeans Day? Jeans Day is the ONE day of the year when WEARING YOUR JEANS
will raise funds for BC Children’s Hospital. Special buttons are purchased that entitle you
to the “right” to wear jeans for the day.
Where does the money go? All the funds raised will go directly to the BC Children’s
Hospital to provide the treatment and special care that ill or injured children require.
What’s the cost? Second Street will be selling the buttons for $5.00 each. Please watch
out for the forms to come home in early April.
ARE YOU LEAVING 2nd STREET COMMUNITY SCHOOL NEXT YEAR?
If you know you will be moving out of the 2nd Street Community School area and will be changing schools
for the 2015/2016 school year, please let the office know as soon as possible. We need this information to
help with the organization of classes for next year.

PLEASE JOIN US IN THE BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHILDRUN
ChildRun is turning 30! Please join us in supporting BC’s only children’s hospital by participating in ChildRun on May
31st, 2015.
ChildRun is a family fun event that raises funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment areas at BC Children’s
Hospital. As Vancouver’s largest family fun run, runners and walkers of all ages and abilities will participate in
either a scenic 5k route through Queen Elizabeth Park or a 1k Fun Run followed by a carnival celebration.
Many schools participate in ChildRun because it’s a wonderful way for kids to learn about community service by
helping kids from all over our province. Last year, over 60 school teams raised a combined total of more than
$147,000!
Bring out your inner artist and help us design the 2015 ChildRun T-shirt by participating in The National Bank
Artwork contest. The contest is open to participants between 2 and 12 years old. Submit your design by April 20th,
2015. Please visit www.childrun.com/artwork for complete details.
If you haven’t participated before we encourage you to join us this year. For more information about ChildRun,
please contact us at childrun@bcchf.ca
