March 2015 Late Winter Newsletter SUN VALLEY AT ITS BEST SVEA PRESIDENT EMBRACES NEW JOB heads as looking at the overall picture financially. “A goal this year is to balance the incredible recreational experiences for owners with prudent expenditures.” he said. table and his talents and hard Board work on behalf of the owners will be greatly missed. Jim, your fellow Board members and the staff express sincere gratitude for your service. Pete went on to say that the Board plans to continue looking at the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for the Association. “We want to communicate with all owners and answer to the best of our abilities, questions and comments made by residents,” he said. The Board is looking forward to a great 2015. “Please get in touch with me or any member of the Board or staff if you have suggestions or comments to make.” he added. A round of applause greeted Pete Petersen as he took his seat at the head of the table for the 2015 Elkhorn Board workshop, an annual event designed to solidify the nine-person board and set goals for the coming year. On the list of owner opportunities for spring and summer are the tennis courts, a multitude of trails for walking, running and hiking, swimming pools, and a park full of outdoor activities. “And, don’t forget to check out the new Elkhorn web site at www.elkhorninsunvalley.com to keep up with all of the recreational programs and events, and watch for our new, exciting, entrance and Harker Center signs due in late spring.” Now retired after 30 years in Boise as an ophthalmologist specializing in retina surgery, Pete plans to spend more time in Elkhorn. “I skied on Baldy for the first time in 1965 and it was love at first turn,” he said. “That was 50 years ago. Now, my wife Janet and I have expanded our activities to hiking, biking, fishing high mountain lakes, and admiring the mountain flora.” Thank You to Outgoing Board Member, Jim Gorringe Giving back to the community is a way of life for Pete. “I served on the Ranch Board of Directors for over eight years and was president for six,” he said. “In addition, this year marks my fifth year on the Elkhorn Board and I am happy to report we are in a very good financial position,” he stated. “We have a conscientious, hard-working staff who really care about us individually as well Long-time Elkhorn owner Jim Gorringe recently finished his three-year term on the SVEA Board. Your Board members will be donning aprons, wielding spatulas and grilling burgers and hotdogs for all. RSVPs and obtaining tickets in advance will be a must for all owners wishing to attend. Please watch for more details in the June newsletter. HAVE YOU VISITED your new ELKHORN WEBSITE (www.elkhorninsunvalley.com)? If not, take a moment now and let us know what you think! Your feedback regarding your community is appreciated!!! WHAT OUR OWNERS are asking Why is Elkhorn’s architectural design review process important? Whether your Elkhorn property is your full-time residence or a vacation or rental home, all owners have a substantial investment in the community. Many buyers make the decision to purchase property in a homeowners’ association such as Elkhorn due to the governing documents that serve to maintain, protect and enhance property values. In addition to the requirements for properties to be well maintained, like most community associations, Elkhorn has written design review standards and processes. While some owners may believe these standards restrict their freedom of individual expression, they actually provide a framework within which each owner can express individual tastes and preferences. The standards have been carefully developed to reflect a balance between individual rights, and assurances that all construction will be of a quality that is in the best interests of the entire association. The design review process protects, and conceivably enhances, property values by creating and preserving an attractive community. Okay, but why do we need processes and guidelines to maintain architectural standards? Perhaps most importantly, we need a basis for treating all owners fairly and reasonably. Written guidelines allow architects, Elkhorn’s Architectural Design Committee (ADC) members and owners to design, review and create utilizing the same criteria. What, as an owner in Elkhorn, is my role? Please remember the Elkhorn governing documents require all exterior alterations be approved prior to implementation. Many small alteration requests can be approved administratively without any review costs to you. Should your improvement plans require utilization of the ADC review process, rest assured your Board and Staff are committed to providing whatever assistance may be required. SVEA’s goal in the architectural review process is to help you achieve your goals. Please contact Paul Exline, ADC Manager via email, Paul@elkhorninsunvalley.com, if you are considering an exterior modification to your Elkhorn property. Paul can provide the applicable SVEA architectural guidelines for your planned project and assist you with the application, submittal requirements and review procedures.
