Uncertainty seems to abound from all sectors, internationally, regionally and of course domestically. Fortunately for us not only have we been able to stay constant, but we have actually thrived and excelled. For the first half of our financial year, we recorded a highly successful unaudited profit before tax of RM450 million. This represented a significant profit increase of 110% compared to the previous financial year and was achieved on the back of a turnover of RM3.9 billion. Our success has not gone unnoticed. Our Group was listed as one of the 'Top 50 Most Valuable Brands' in Malaysia by Brand Finance and also one of the 'Top 100 Malaysian Listed Companies' in the KPMG/ The Edge Shareholder Value Awards 2007. Two of our subsidiaries, namely Boustead Plantations Berhad and Boustead Properties Berhad received the 'Malaysia1000 Merdeka Award' while our property arm retained its status as one of Malaysia’s top ten property developers by The Edge. T It is imperative for a conglomerate like ours to achieve sustainable organic growth, especially at a time when the Malaysian economy is facing considerable domestic and external challenges. Despite these challenges, we have been able to deliver growth and I am confident that the Malaysian economy has strong fundamentals to weather this storm. Our growth has been achieved based on our proven track record and strategy of having multiple sources of earnings from six major activities that contribute to our revenue and bottom-line. I call upon all Boustedians to explore new ways to improve productivity and where possible, strengthen our earnings potential. One such case in point is the successful completion of our takeover of Boustead Properties Berhad. The luncheon was held at The Royale Bintang Kuala Lumpur on 28 August 2008. In recognition of his contributions, Hj Hashim was also presented with retirement gifts from the Company. Hj Hashim is certainly no stranger to many Bousteadians. He started his career with the Group when he joined the then Boustead Trading (1985) Sdn Bhd in July 1995 as the Branch Manager for the Melaka Branch. He was later reassigned to the Company’s Head Office in Kelana Jaya in July 1996. In May 2002, Hj Hashim was transferred to the Group Human Resource Department of Boustead Holdings Berhad where he took up the position of Manager, HR Projects. Hj Hashim’s key portfolio was as a trainer and facilitator, in addition to other HR assignments and projects. As a trainer, Hj Hashim had conducted and facilitated numerous training programmes for the staff of Boustead, most notably the ‘7 Habits’ programme of which Hj Hashim is a certified facilitator. As admitted by Hj Hashim himself, it was his stint in training that gave him the invaluable opportunity to meet and get to know many staff from within the Group, making him a familiar face amongst many Bousteadians. On behalf of all Bousteadians, Berita Boustead would like to thank Hj Hashim for his contributions and wish him a long and happy retirement! Miss Boustead 2008?" tur view F or this year’s annual retreat, Group Finance spent the 13th to the 16th of June in Bali. Our journey began with an AirAsia plane ride to Denpasar, the capital of Bali where we were greeted by our warm and welcoming guide, Pak Red. After bringing us to lunch, he introduced us to the shopping haven in Kuta, where shops stretched on for miles. After shopping to our heart’s content, we were whisked away to dinner before checking into our hotel, The Aston Bali Resort & Spa to have a good night’s rest. 1st day dinner On top of Mount Kintamani Tanah Lot temple We began the next day with a cultural show, the ‘Barong & Kris’ dance, showcasing to us the rich Balinese culture. We then took a trip to Mount Kintamani to enjoy our lunch with a view overlooking the active Batur volcano. After that, we visited a coffee farm where the ingredients were all organically grown and freshly made (not to mention, uniquely delicious!) We also had the chance to visit a handicraft centre displaying only the highest quality of woodwork and batik. We then had our dinner and after that, some of the more adventurous of us went for a traditional Balinese spa. Our third day began with a trip to Waterbom, a theme park not unlike Sunway Lagoon. We had our teambuilding activities there and while in the beginning, some of us had some apprehensions about going into the water, by the end of it, everyone had a really good time. After drying ourselves off and having a delicious lunch at the Natrabu Minang restaurant (previously visited by our 4th and 5th Prime Ministers!), we headed to Tanah Lot, a seaside temple which had an amazing cliff side view and rows of shops. For our final night, we saved the best for last and had our Gala Dinner, the highlight of which was the group performances, where everyone showcased their hidden talents. "Look! Hidden A surprise birthday cake for talents reveale d!" l Mr Danie Ahai Cek Mek Molek! Chelsea Chelsea! Yeehaa! With a heavy heart, we left our hotel for the final time on the fourth day but we were considerably cheered up by a last minute shopping session at Kuta town. Once we had our seaside seafood lunch at Jimbaran Bay, we caught a plane from the Ngurah Rai International Airport and safely arrived back home, tired, but with many, many sweet and unforgettable memories. "Oh yummy! My favourite Bali coffee" "Time for a good Bali coffee!" "Front cover for Bali Travel Magazine? Naahh!" Splash! Escapade to Bangkok O n 4 July 2008, the staff of Group Human Resource Department (GHR) made its trip to Bangkok. It was GHR’s first teambuilding trip to an ASEAN country under the Employee Relations activities for the year 2008. Our short stay in Bangkok was packed with activities. Our main activity was a challenging treasure hunt at Chatuchak, Bangkok’s famous weekend market. A visit to Bangkok is not complete without visits to historical and cultural spots. On our city tour of Bangkok, we passed many historical and cultural sites and visited Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha where our experienced Thai tour guide gave us a comprehensive briefing on Thai history and culture. An authentic Thai dinner, together with a showcase of classical Thai Dance were an interesting blend of sight, sound and taste, further gave us the opportunity to experience and immerse ourselves in the Thai culture. On one of the nights, we also visited a Muslim community area in the heart of Bangkok where we had a sumptuous Thai dinner. ral sight ectu An archit Our visit to Bangkok was also an educational and informative one. We visited a leather factory producing and selling a variety of leather accessories and Gems Gallery, an ISOcertified gems factory and gallery. A visit to an established outlet that markets pure honey products was also part of our itinerary where we were briefed on the manufacturing and industry of pure honey products in Thailand as well as the health benefits of honey. What made it more interesting was that the briefing was conducted by a local Thai in Bahasa Melayu, albeit with heavy foreign accent. The event took place at the UTeM’s main campus on 9 - 10 August 2008. A total of five teams registered for the competition - UNMC, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Politeknik Shah Alam, Politeknik Kota Bharu and the host UTeM. The UNMC team finished at a respectable third spot. It is a tremendous achievement considering it being UNMC’s maiden foray into Formula University. KUDOS to Dr Chan and his team! Despite these demanding activities we nonetheless enjoyed some shopping at Bangkok’s top shopping spots such as MBK Shopping Mall and Suan Lum Night Bazaar where we managed to get some souvenirs for our family and friends. Wild-Wild West party for Royale Bintang staff Also, in GHR’s tradition of bonding and teambuilding, we took the opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of some of our staff in Bangkok, complete with a birthday cake and birthday gifts. Our experience in Bangkok was indeed a memorable one. As it drizzled on our way to the airport, our tour guide was quick to mention that according to local beliefs, it meant that Thailand was weeping at our departure. We left Bangkok with a heavy heart but nevertheless gained tremendously from the experience of getting to know each member of GHR better, bonding with each other and working and co-operating as a team. These are only some of the important outcomes from GHR teambuilding escapade to Bangkok 2008. I t’s party time again at The Royale Bintang Kuala Lumpur! Staff Cheim Mohd came out fourth place for individual placing. A small man pushed his way to the front of the line, only to be pushed back, amid loud and colourful curses. On the man’s second attempt, he was punched square in the jaw, and knocked around a bit, and then thrown to the end of the line again. As he got up the second time, he said to the person at the end of the line... “That does it! If they hit me one more time, I won’t open the store!” Shave and a haircut A man decided he needed a shave and a haircut. The barber completed the haircut and proceeded to give the man his shave. The man handed him a $10.00 bill, and said keep the change, at which the barber responded: “Why such a large tip?” The man said you deserve it, this is the first time I have had a barber, a butcher, and a paperhanger work on me. Late for work The secretary came in late for work the third day in a row. The boss called her into his office and said, “Now look Sharon, I know we had a wild fling for a while, but that’s over. Who told you, you could come and go as you please around here?” Sharon simply smiled, lit up a cigarette, and while exhaling said, “My lawyer.” Tip or not A blackjack dealer and a player with a thirteen count in his hand were arguing about whether or not it was appropriate to tip the dealer. The woman continued, “And look at this here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune.” Then she handed the bottle to the man. The man shook his head in agreement, opened it and took a few big swigs from the bottle, then handed it back to the woman. The woman took the bottle, immediately put the cap back on, and handed it back to the man. The man asked, “Aren’t you having any?” The woman replied, “No. I think I will just wait for the police...” The player said, “When I get bad cards, it’s not the dealer’s fault. Accordingly, when I get good cards, the dealer obviously had nothing to do with it so, why should I tip him?” The dealer said, “When you eat out do you tip the waiter?” “Yes.” “Well then, he serves you food, I’m serving you cards so you should tip me.” “Okay, but, the waiter gives me what I ask for. I’ll take an eight.” Car accident A woman and a man got into a car accident, and it’s a bad one. Both cars were totally demolished, but amazingly neither of them were hurt. After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said, “So you’re a man. That’s interesting. I’m a woman... Wow! Just look at our cars. There’s nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace the rest of our days.” The man replied, ”I agree with you completely; this must be a sign from God!” Be quiet A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street. “But officer,” the man began, “I can explain...” “Just be quiet,” snapped the officer. “I’m going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back.” “But, officer, I just wanted to say...,” “And I said to keep quiet! You’re going to jail!” A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, “Lucky for you that the chief’s at his daughter’s wedding.
