Nils Aarøy 5 Welcome to Karmøy Homeland of the Viking Kings – Norway’s Birthplace Come and experience Karmøy – with rocks and skerries protecting us from the raging sea in the West. With long, silky-smooth, sandy beaches in bays and inlets – and with eternal swells pounding the coast. Real maritime culture, dramatic ocean, silvery fresh fish and a vibrant heritage – that’s Karmøy today. With a mix of small hamlets, pleasant shopping centres, historical sights, modern industry – all jostling cheek-to-jowl with traditional agriculture and active fisheries. Walk in the footsteps of Harald Fairhair who first united Norway in a single kingdom. Olav’s Church, the Nordvegen History Centre and the Viking Farm, all at Avaldsnes, invite you to relive history. Let these barons and kings, with their indentured trells, be your guide. The Church and History Centre offer majestic views of sheltered Karmsund strait, the original “Northern Way”, or way north, hence “Norway”. 6 7 Karmøy in Europe Daily flights connect Oslo and Bergen with Haugesund Airport, Karmøy. International services arrive from London, Malaga, Alicante, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Pisa, Mallorca and Bremen. Frequent passenger ferries sail between Bergen, Kopervik (for Karmøy), and Stavanger. It is also possible to cross by car ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Kristiansand or Stavanger. Then either drive or take a luxury coach to Haugesund. 8 iceland sweden finland norway bergen oslo russia estonia hirtshals latvia denmark lithuania copenhagen gdansk ireland u.k. bremen netherlands london belgium belarus poland germany ukraine tjekkia slovakia france switzerland italiy pisa austria moldova hungary slovenia croatia bosnia romania serbia bulgaria montenegro albania spain portugal alicante macedonia greece mallorca malaga 9 turkey Åkrehamn coastal museum rv47 åkrehamn Karmøy Fishery Museum ferkingstad fishermen´s memorial Old BoatHouses at Hop syre sandve sandhåland syreneset fort vedavågen fosen boknafjorden E39 arsvågen Ferry : Arsvågen - mortavika 20 min bokn Fast ferry: stavanger - Kopervik 60 min karmsundet Frisbee golf blikshavn rv511 snørteland kopervik sålefjellet 132 moh Kinnebu burmavegen Røyningsbu hillesland hovdastad Skudeneshavn leisure Park skudeneshavn vikeholmen lighthouse 9-hole Golf 9-hole Golf mælandsgården museum Geitungen lighthouse Ferry : Stavanger - Skudeneshavn 75 min E39 10 Karmøy Guide Map Fast ferry : bergen - Kopervik 3,5 hours haugesund - Kopervik 20 min Fast ferry : haugesund - feøy 20 min 18-hole Golf Haugaland zoo rv518 torvastad Bus service to Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Haugesund E134 Norheim The Five Poor Maidens moksheim 9-hole Golf dyrafjellet 172 moh solbakken putball aksnesstranda førdesfjorden røyksund vormedal Viking Farm Olav’s Church Nordvegen History Centre rehaugane avaldsnes rv47 tysvær Coastline: 140 km. The historical remains here reveal ancient facts about the first kings of Norway and the legendary figure who appears so often in sagas and songs. The barons who controlled the vital ”Northern Way” have left impressive works: mighty grave mounds, tall memorial stones, and rich artefact beds. Beside the medieval church is a history centre and, to the East, a reconstruction of a Viking Farm, open to visitors in the summer months. 14 Haugesund feøy torvastad Norheim rehaugane visnes vormedal Olav’s Church Nordvegen History Centre Viking Farm Haugesund Airport, karmøy avaldsnes rv518 røyksund rv47 Kvalavåg Karmsundet Vedavågen Kopervik rv47 Åkrehamn 15 rv511 Olav’s Church, built by Håkon Håkonsen in about 1250 AD, is a powerful memorial to former greatness. 16 Virgin Mary’s Needle – the Sagas warn that Doomsday will be upon us if ever the ”sewing needle” touches the church wall. The clergymen of Avaldsnes – under cover of darkness – are said to have chiselled bits off the point and thus saved the world. The gap between the needle and the church wall is presently 9.2 cm. 17 Nordvegen History Centre, though it lies in the midst of history, avoids spoiling the views of the Olav´s Church and its carefully manicured surroundings, as most of the building is below ground. Only the entrance and Karmsund face are visible. 18 19 Now is your chance to meet Harald Fairhair, the king who unified Norway and made Avaldsnes the oldest royal seat. Let Harald guide you through 3500 years of local history, during times when Avaldsnes was where Norway and Europe met. Listen to his tales of royal doings, and take the opportunity to meet some of the barons who held court at Avaldsnes, funded by taxation of trading ships plying the Norwegian coast. Open all year Telephone + 47 52 81 24 00 www.vikinggarden.no 20 According to the Sagas, King Olav Tryggvason (c. 968–1000) investigated several burial mounds at Avaldsnes. Perhaps seeking proof of a relationship with Harald Fairhair? 21 The Vikings were excellent sailors with versatile ships. The Viking Age is given as 800–1050 AD. The Boat House at Bukkøy. Learn more about this fascinating age when you visit Avaldsnes! 22 The name ”Vikings” was used of Scandinavian marauders who sailed to other countries to trade and pillage. 23 Kongsgård Royal Estate project 24 Excavations are underway at Avaldsnes! This two-year dig is part of a research investigation to be concluded in 2017. The Avaldsnes Royal Estate project will explore the place of the royal farmsteads in the early days of the Norwegian realm, and their role in the first 1000 years of the nation’s prehistory. 25 25 26 A Viking sheep, perhaps? The grassy mounds between Olav’s Church and Bukkøy Viking Farm are a fine example of how agriculture shapes the landscape. And a reminder to greet the tireless groundsmen – the “Viking Sheep”! Not content just to graze, these hardy animals enjoy human company and are pleased to say hello to passers-by! 27 The footpath to the Viking Farm on Bukkøy offers close communion with nature. 28 The Viking Farm, below the medieval church, consists of several dwellings, longhouses, firepits, roundhouses and a spacious boat house. Open all year, with guides in summer only Telephone +47 52 81 24 00 www.vikinggarden.no 29 Campfire fun in the Viking Longhouse. 30 31 Twist bread Easy to make ... 4 dl flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp sugar 5 tbsp soy oil 1,5 dl water Mix dry ingredients together, then add oil and water. Work to a smooth dough and store in an air-tight plastic bag. Carve sticks, twirl dough round stick, and bake on fire until dough comes loose. Be careful not to char. Alternatively, bake bread around a pre-fried sausage. Another good idea is to add spices, grated cheese or sun-dried tomatoes to the dough. For a sweeter bread, add chopped chocolate to dough! Or swirl bread in a mix of sugar and cinnamon before baking! 32 Pack sausages, bread dough and wood logs for the campfire and find a place on the seashore below the Viking Farm. 33 feøy torvastad Visnes – adventures in industrialisation Smelting Furnace Statue of Liberty Mine Museum Visnes encapsulates the history of a mining community. In the nineteenth century it was home to 3000 and one of Norway’s largest copper mines! Evidence suggests that the Statue of Liberty in New York is sheathed in copper from these very mines. Walk through Director Charles de France’s garden – the Fransehagen – and inspect the ruins on the water’s edge. Founded on the incredible success of the early 19th Century herring harvests, the town grew at a startling rate. Even today, almost 130 original timber homes and seafront wharves have been preserved in ”The Old Town”. www.visitskudeneshavn.no 42 rv47 vedavågen Karmsundet Kopervik sævelandsvik Åkrehamn rv511 Ferkingstad burmavegen rv47 sandve Nine-hole golf course syreneset fort skudeneshavn syre geitungen Lighthouse 43 The Lady in the Park The Old Town Vikeholmen Lighthouse mælandsgården museum Yacht Harbour 44 Today Skudeneshavn Old Town – Gamle Skudeneshavn – is one of the best-kept small towns in Norway. 45 The central Yacht Harbour is popular with visitors. Enjoy on a slice of bread with mayonnaise, pickled gherkins and lemon juice. Delicious! Boiling crab: The crab season opens in late July/ early August, and continues until the beginning of December. The best harvests are taken in September, when quality is also at its peak. 69 Our sandy beaches 70 71 72 Karmøy del sol ... Long, silky-smooth, sandy beaches lining hidden bays and inlets. On a hot summer’s day there is nothing to compare with a visit to one of our ”costa del sol” beaches.
