“My main mission is to get my players prepared to play on Friday morning like
they do every other week during the year. I think the only thing we have been
missing is a little bit of getting over the hump of being nervous playing on the
world’s biggest stage.” – Captain Love III
We look forward to your involvement and thank
you again for your support of the 39th Ryder
Cup at Medinah Country Club!
Kind regards,

“This is a huge responsibility to be the next captain, and also, I have to say that
it’s one of the biggest challenges, if not the biggest challenge I will have in my
career, especially at this time of my career… (my goal) of course is
to keep the cup in our possession.” – Captain Olazabal
“One Year To Go” Celebration
On September 26, 2011, the 2012 Ryder Cup celebrated its “One Year To Go”
mark. To commemorate the day, U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III and
European Ryder Cup Captain José María Olazábal each hit a once-in-a-lifetime
golf shot from the 16th Floor of Chicago’s Trump International Hotel & Tower.
Positioned high above Chicago’s famed Michigan Avenue, each Captain attempted
three 220-yard shots targeting a custom-built green which was floating on
a 35’ x 75’ barge in the Chicago River. “When the Fire Marshal asked if we could
hit the green below and not the concrete, that’s when I started getting nervous,”
said Captain Love. “What an incredible way to continue the countdown to the
2012 Ryder Cup and celebrate with the great city of Chicago.”
Amid windy Chicago conditions, each Captain successfully reached the green
with one of their three attempts, delighting the crowd surrounding the tee box
and fans gathered on the banks of the Chicago River.
To celebrate this exciting stunt, The PGA of America, in conjunction with the
Ryder Cup Magnificent Moments Fundraising Campaign, donated $100,000 to
benefit the Illinois PGA Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities of
Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana.
Following their spectacular golf shots, the two Captains made their way to U.S.
Cellular Field to throw the first pitch at the Chicago White Sox/Toronto Blue
Jays game. Both Captains reached the plate on the fly, and had the crowd
cheering.
“Today has been a whirlwind for me,” said European Captain José María
Olazábal. “I’ve never hit a golf ball from the top of a building, and I’ve never
thrown out the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game. Heck, I’ve never
thrown a baseball.”
The exciting day of events concluded at the Chicago Theater with an evening
full of entertainment including Robert Smigel and George Wendt performing
the infamous “Bill Swerski’s Superfans” skit and a performance by the original
cast of Broadway’s Jersey Boys. The evening also featured a “Fireside Chat”
with Jimmy Roberts interviewing the two Captains.
While the “One Year To Go” celebration has passed, excitement for the Ryder
Cup continues to build. Read future Volunteer Newsletters for reports on other
community related celebrations and events.
