YOU ARE SO SOPHISTICATED YOUR LEGS DON’T DANCE NO MORE. COME HERE MY FRIEND, HAVE A SIP FROM MY CUBA LIBRE, IT’LL SET YOU FREE.<< >> YOU’RE FROM THE TRACK: DOUGLAS GREED – WHEN A MAN SINGS ON A TRACK Men who stare at Goats PETRIFIED IN ADMIRATION A PLEA AGAINST COOLNESS Don’t get us wrong: We love underground music. This magazine is about underground music. But what we witness more and more at the parties in Ibiza makes us think that if 8 TheClubbingBible.Net you really come to the island to experience some kind of fun and euphoric excitement, we advise you to visit one of the more commercial party events. Since when is partying a concert experience? Petrified in admiration everybody is staring in the direction of the DJ, which completely kills communication and can cause a pretty poor and boring atmosphere. Our music is danceable so treat it like that. Where is the occasional smile from one fan to the other? Many cool underground heads just stand critically in front of the DJ, over-analysing and ‘shazaming’ every moment of the set instead of actually letting go. Why not lose it completely to the music, dance stupidly, grin madly and show everybody that you’re actually having a good time? A notion seems to become en vogue that musical expertise and underground knowledge is only conveyed through a cool facial expression and a slightly ironic look that seems to say ‘Really, they like that track?!’ when a track works on the dance floor. Look at commercial music parties like Supermartxé, Matinee or Café Olé on the other hand. Most punters won’t even know afterwards which DJs played, they will not know any of the titles of the tracks they particularly liked and probably even the name of the party has eluded them. What they remember is that they had great fun, flirted with some smiling ladies and probably that the last Tequila shot was one too many. This is not to advocate commercial, pop house parties, because let’s be honest, the music is often pretty shitty. But it’s time to change the atmosphere at some of our underground parties and rediscover a party spirit that is getting lost. “You need to loosen up my dear”, as it says in this great track of Douglas Greed, a firmly underground piece, of course. TheClubbingBible.Net 9 10 TheClubbingBible.Net TheClubbingBible.Net 11 INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON Edu Imbernon KEHAKUMA’S rising STAR Imagine the eyes of a 16 year old from Valencia after having sneaked into Amnesia and standing in front of a DJ booth for the first time in his life. Four years later, in 2009, the Spanish producer and DJ Edu Imbernon gained international recognition with his underground hit “El baile alemán”. Since then he released on several renowned labels, including his wonderful remix of “Crystalised” by The XX, which he turned into a spheric afterhour staple. Ahead of his monthly Kehakuma Ibiza appearances we talked to the talented artist. Edu, please tell us something about your origins. When did you start to dj and produce, 12 TheClubbingBible.Net and at what point in your life did music become a real job that pays the rent? When I was 15 I started to get interested in electronic music because I had older brothers who were going to Ibiza. At 16 I came over to the island with my best friend. I had never been to a bar or a nightclub. We went to the opening of Amnesia. For me it was fine because I was really tall, but my friend was small, so he put on sunglasses and a cap. We were really nervous about them asking us for ID, but everything went well. It was an experience that changed my life. For the first time I saw a DJ perform, with a sound-system like that and I was like “What the hell is this?” TheClubbingBible.Net 13 INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON “ MY FIRST CD THAT I EVER LISTENED A RENAISSANCE CD, MIXED BY DIGWEED. TO WAS NOW TO BE ON HIS LABEL AND HAVING ALL HIS SUPPORT IS SOMETHING After that I bought my first CDJs and tried it out myself. Obviously it was a hobby; never did I imagine doing it for a living. When did this change? When I finished school I started producing. I was supposed to study economics at university. Two weeks before starting it I woke up one morning and thought, “Man, I don’t wanna do economics. I wanna produce music”. I told my parents, they are both teachers so this was a bit difficult. But my father is a musician too, so he said “Let’s give it a try for one or two years and if it works then ok. Otherwise you go back to university.” I then started studying soundengineering and I was in the studio 24/7. Only studio, nothing else. That changed my life. The 14 TheClubbingBible.Net second moment that changed my life was when I moved to Berlin, which was where I produced “El baile alemán”. I then came back to Spain, started playing gigs, had a manager and an agent, and that’s when my hobby slowly became my profession. Your father has a background in classical music. What is his understanding of electronic music? He does understand it, he loves it. Obviously I’m a musical producer, I like to create harmonies and beautiful melodies. Most people my parents’ age don’t know about electronic music. They think it’s only boom boom boom. But when you play them some records they say: “This is nice.” There are records which even when you are 80 you think REALLY COOL. ” they are great. Obviously my parents are very happy that at my age I’m living my dream and traveling the world. What do you like best about being a producer and DJ? Is there something you don’t particularly like but comes with the job? I like that I can travel the world and meet different people, different cultures, and learn from every different place. That makes you more of a spiritual person and more open to the world. What I don’t like are things like waiting at the airports, delays and cancellations, all that stuff people don’t think of. Sometimes they think “Oh, you’re travelling the world and everything is super.” But for example last weekend I slept only five hours in four days and I was totally broken. Going to a place that is 36 degrees and then to a place that was 8 degrees, your body takes serious strain. Going on tour is really hard. But I can’t complain, it’s part of the job. Your new release “Veranoski” is a personal favorite of John Digweed, released on his Bedrock label. TheClubbingBible.Net 15 INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON KEHAKUMA’S rising STAR How does it feel to have the support of some rather huge legends of the scene? It’s super nice. My first CD that I ever listened to was a “Renaissance” CD, mixed by Digweed. To be now on his label and having all his support is something really cool. I don’t really realize what is happening, I just go with the flow. I met him in December where I played at Fabric in London and he was playing after me. He said he loves my music so I sent him all my unreleased records. And then he chose “Veranoski”. Please tell us something about this track! “Veranoski” is one of my tracks of the summer. I produced it along my friend Triumph, and that’s 16 TheClubbingBible.Net always something nice, working with a friend. Luckily this winter I worked hard in the studio so I have five new records coming out. This one is the more techno one. It is selling really well, we are number 10 on Beatport’s techno charts. It’s already huge in places where my music has not been heard before like Argentina, India or Asia… our case we started very close but now I would say that each of us has his own career and an own way of seeing the music. We used to have the same taste, now it’s more different; we’re still good friends and like to play together. Regarding to get together in the studio it’s difficult because all of us are very busy, but I think it will happen at some point, time will tell. You have a close friendship with Coyu and Uner. Any plans to do something together with them in the future, maybe doing back2back shows like Apollonia? The guys from Apollonia came together after many years of separate professional careers. In You played at the Space Opening. Was this something special for you or just another gig in your agenda? I have played at Space for three years now but this year the opening was amazing. Perfect set time at the sunset terrace, packed, lots of friends – it was just perfect. But I still like the inside terrace more. A perfect gig for me would be at the terrace at the closing party, from 3 to 5am. That would be a highlight because everyone is there, and the terrace is the terrace. For me it’s the best floor at Space. You are playing at Kehakuma this season, also on the terrace. Please tell us a bit about that! It’s the third year that I’m playing for Kehakuma but this season I play exclusively there. The years before I also played some gigs for Amnesia, some for Privilege. I played a couple of Kehakuma dates including the Opening TheClubbingBible.Net 17 INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON INTERVIEW EDU IMBERNON party, which was amazing. The previous years I‘ve always played earlier slots, and so far this year I‘ve played the closing sets on the terrace, I really love this. Kehakuma adds an interesting line up for the weekends on the island, it’s a nice mix between people from the island and underground clubbers. What is the craziest or funniest adventure you ever had on the island? I have many crazy stories and I’ve met so many crazy and fun people here. It’s amazing how they come to the island and just enjoy. It doesn’t matter if you are a businessman or a teacher – everyone here transforms to a partygoer. The second year that I came here as a clubber I rented an apartment in Playa d’en Bossa with three of my best friends. We were here for 23 days. Neither of us were even 18 years old yet. We had little budget for every day, so we were eating Spaghetti Carbonara or rice with something all the time. Always trying to get on the guestlists or trying to get wristbands, we partied for 23 days in a row, not one day off. I remember the last day I was here I was lying on the bed with a fever and I thought it’s time to go home. That was when Space still had afterparties. When I went back to Valencia, I didn’t even have a tan, haha! What are the next goals in your life? Where do you want to go from here? I see myself becoming more of a live act. But not with a computer and Ableton. A live act like a band. In the future I see myself closer to Trentemøller than to a Sven Väth, if you know what I mean. When people see a DJ it is not 18 TheClubbingBible.Net the same as when music is happening in the moment, when musicians are playing in real time. I don’t know when and how, but I know it will happen. I’m still young and I get, I won’t say bored, but I don’t want to always do the same. I’m always looking for new ways to challenge myself. What was the most valuable thing you ever broke during a party? My CDJ players. I spilt beer over them and after five seconds they were completely dead. Please share with our readers the best advice that was ever given to you in your life! My father told me “If you don’t believe in yourself, people won’t believe in you either.” You need to love what you do and be amazed with what you can do. And people will then believe it. Don’t try and sell something you don’t believe in. You will have to work without feedback for a very long time but at some point you will get it back. Some people start with music production and after two years they are like “Fuck, I’m not playing at Ushuaia, so I’ll just do something else.” Obviously you have to have talent for it but you have to work hard too. It’s work, work, work, work and learning. Congratulations to you pulling off two weekly residencies this summer. Apart from Luciano you’re the only DJ in Ibiza having achieved that. What is your most prominent feeling - surprise, humbleness, pride, excitement, stress? Thank you very much. As far as my feelings go - it’s a mixture of everything. A year ago I would have never thought that we would be talking about two residencies now. T h i s was a long process over the winter and we discussed this a lot, listened to different opinions and trusted our instincts in the end. My night at Pacha has been very successful from the start in May and the Diynamic Neon Nights are going very well, too. 22 Solomun TheClubbingBible.Net Sundays you are playing at Pacha and Tuesdays at Sankeys. If someone is coming to Ibiza for one week only and wants to see you: What would you recommend to check out - Sunday or Tuesday? If he or she only stays for a week in Ibiza? Difficult question - I would recommend to go to Pacha on Sunday, chill on the beach on Monday and go to Sankeys on Tuesday. Both nights are so different, you have to experience both. But I would recommend every visitor of Ibiza not only to come to see me, but also to go to experience Jamie Jones, Sven Väth and Cocoon and some of the other parties, too. TheClubbingBible.Net 23 INTERVIEW SOLOMUN What is the difference between your Diynamic Night at Sankeys and Solomun +1 at Pacha, apart from different support acts? At Sankeys there will be exclusively artists from our Diynamic label on both floors. This creates a very unique energy. At Pacha I am playing with artists outside of Diynamic who I appreciate and personally like. Of course, the clubs themselves are completely different too. Every gig you play is a new adventure that you have to let in. Pacha is trying some new stuff with the line ups this summer plus the club had a massive change in the management. How does it feel to work in this new environment and with a completely new team? To be honest: really, really good. It is great to work with the Pacha people, they are friendly and professional. And despite the changes last year it still has the vibe of a family business which has a lot of advantages I’d say. At Pacha every Sunday a different friend of yours is your +1 guest. Who would you recommend especially in August and why? Well I can’t help myself, I have to recommend every single artist. Miss Kittin, who is playing twice, Âme who even appears on three dates this summer, Heidi of course and what I like to point out especially is August 4th where we gonna have the exception to the +1 rule. Not one artist but a whole club is my plus 1: Warung Beach Club from Brazil. Three residents and Renato Ratier, who is playing the main room together with me. I’m sure this is going to be really special. 24 TheClubbingBible.Net INTERVIEW SOLOMUN Which bookings at Pacha came from you and which artists were proposed by the club? The night is called Solomun +1 so every artist was my personal choice. The concept is that I have a special and grown relationship with everyone of these artists. Like Guy Gerber you too had a ‘rehearsal’ for the party at Pacha in April, at that time almost exclusively for locals. How was the atmosphere and how does it compare to the party now during summer? After this party in April, where I played with my good friend and label colleague H.O.S.H., I was convinced that the concept would work. Because our first change was to put the DJ booth actually in the middle of the dance floor to create more of a warehouse feeling. And after this pre-party in April we knew it was a good decision and could start into the season with a good feeling. You run your own club back in Hamburg. How does it work with you being in Ibiza the whole summer? What does your German team and crowd say to that? My business partner Adriano and my sister Magdalena take care of all the administrative things, so the joint works great when I’m abroad. And we also have a fantastic line up without me being there all the time. You had a chance to check out most of the Ibizan clubs last summer. Is there something that inspired you or that you want to introduce at your club Ego? I would like to take the good weather back to Hamburg but this is really hard to import. TheClubbingBible.Net 25 INTERVIEW SOLOMUN INTERVIEW SOLOMUN sound has also entered the charts. What do you think of this revival and what can we expect from this summer musically? I always love it when it’s funky and this summer is beginning great in that regard. Personally though I am rediscovering a more techy side of myself. You are the king of Ibiza for many since last summer. If that was actually true, what would be your first official act? I think if my name was Hans Mueller or something people would not find that Kingwordplay so appealing. But as my surname and artist name is very similar to the biblical King Solomon the media use it all the time. I 26 TheClubbingBible.Net can laugh about it and am flattered a little bit, but I don’t actually feel like a king, especially not the king of Ibiza. Musically you stay true to your roots. In your sets there are references to the 70ies and 80ies, Soul and sometimes Hip Hop. With Pharell’s productions of Daft Punk and Robin Thicke this When fans see you this summer on the beach or at a club - does it annoy you when they approach you? You can always talk to me, only very rarely it annoys me. Just try to talk to me in a normal way and not shout at me. But most people know that and are usually very polite and not intrusive. Thank you very much for this chat. Take care! TheClubbingBible.Net 27 INTERVIEW SOLOMUN INTERVIEW SOLOMUN ANZEIGE 28 TheClubbingBible.Net STEVE LAWLER BY I-VOICE STEVE LAWLER REFOCUSED AND NEVER BEEN HAPPIER STEVE LAWLER BY I-VOICE Last summer Steve Lawler threw a huge curveball. Ditching a ten year relationship with Space and setting up his own Warriors party at Sankeys was riskier than the bare chest/ leather waistcoat look he’s rocking in the Warriors promo pictures. Especially as Sankeys had scored a terrible reputation after a summer of low numbers when it launched in 2011. Luckily the gamble paid off. More than anyone imagined it would, this summer Sankeys is one of the hottest tickets in town. Naturally Steve is back on Sundays with his refocused gang of Warriors. He’s also celebrating his label’s centennial release and he’s become a dad. I Voice caught him on a rare moment of downtime to see where he’s at. Turns out he’s never been happier… There’s been a few changes in your Warriors Ibiza concept, right? Yeah, after last summer’s parties we did a huge tour of Warriors parties all over Europe and we started using the same DJs who really worked with us. People like Guti, who’s with us for three shows this summer. We’ve got Lee Curtiss, Franco Cinelli, Butch, Steve Bug plus some new signings. Last year was great with some of the older legends like Derrick Carter and Kevin Saunderson and also people like M.A.N.D.Y. Every party we did was great. But musically we were a bit too broad. This year we wanted to be more musically focussed. Seems like you’ve fine-tuned the dynamics a little? Totally. Last year we fine-tuned the concept but now we’re fine-tuning the focus. To be honest, it was a huge risk doing this in the first place. The venue had a disastrous year in 2011 so getting bookings last year was difficult. Now, after the success of last year, we’re able to cherry pick our DJs more precisely and have them down more regularly and live up to the Warriors name. 30 TheClubbingBible.Net TheClubbingBible.Net 31 STEVE LAWLER BY I-VOICE STEVE LAWLER BY I-VOICE We’ve also got two weekly residents now, too. Last year was just Darius but this year Detlef is joining us every week, too. Nice. Let’s go back to the riskiness of the move to Sankeys for a minute. Going into a club with a poor reputation, and dropping a residency with Space to do it, must have taken some balls... Ha! I’ll be honest, everyone around me, including my management and agent and members of the team, all advised me not to do it. Space had 10 dates ready for me, loads of things were thrown at me but I really wanted my own thing. Space is amazing but Sankeys was perfect for me. I wanted an underground establishment. And, as you know, they’re hard to find on the island! Wasn’t DC10 an option for you? I considered it. But it’s so famous for its Monday nights and I knew Jamie Jones was going in there the same year. It wouldn’t have 32 TheClubbingBible.Net been my smartest move. I knew no one was touching Sankeys, I knew its capacity was 2500. I’ve been playing on this island for years and I know what type of numbers I can pull. Plus I wanted a dark room with a low ceiling. Somewhere where we can be a bit more experimental with our music. Not indulgent, but deeper. When you’re in a bigger room you kinda push yourself into playing tougher, bigger and harder. Then I heard David Vincent had booked Solomun for his parties too and I think between Solomun and I we gave the club the reputation it’s now got this year. And all we did was show what potential the venue has. That’s all it needed. Underground nights in Ibiza don’t have to stop at DC10. What else did you learn last year? Not a lot, I’m happy to say! We nailed what we wanted to do and how we wanted to present ourselves. We sat down in February to discuss developments for the summer and we realised that there wasn’t a lot we wanted to change. When you’ve got something that works, don’t change it! We want to promote ourselves a bit louder, obviously. But really that’s it. Let’s chat about productions for a minute. “Avaida” is a biggie. Dedicated to your new daughter, it’s a very personal track, too. Thank you and yes it is! I’m not the most technical producer and I’m certainly not a piano player. I understand keys and how to use a piano but I can’t play it naturally. So I chipped away at it, recording different parts on every studio session. Then I went into the editor and moved the notes around to make it sound natural. I’d love to lie to you and say I recorded it in one take but I didn’t. I’m not that good enough. It took me nine months to make the track and it took nine months for Avaida to be born. The single release date was my baby’s due date. You’ve been super busy on the production front during all of this. “Problem Child” is out now, “Solution” is on, the 100th release. Are you feeling inspired at the moment? I finished “Solution” specifically for the 100th release. And the reason the release was delayed was because of the baby. But “Problem Child”, along with another release I’ve got lined up on Circus Recordings, was actually made last year. I have another single called “Upside Down” due on Fiesta Recordings, and that was made last year too. Let’s wrap up: In three words, tell us why we should come to VIVa Warriors! Oh shit! Erm… Really Good Party! How’s that? Perfect. See you! Words by Dave Jenkins / ibiza-voice.com I WANTED A DARK ROOM WITH A LOW CEILING. SOMEWHERE WHERE WE CAN BE A BIT MORE EXPERIMENTAL WITH OUR MUSIC. TheClubbingBible.Net 33 34 TheClubbingBible.Net TheClubbingBible.Net 35 INTERVIEW PACO OSUNA PACO OSUNA Impacting the epicENTER. of electronic music Paco Osuna seems to be a man very much concerned with evolution and development. It is perhaps these ideals that have enabled him to remain at the forefront of clubbing culture for the last twenty years. Over the years Paco’s own career has taken several twists and turns as he evolved from a housier sound to the more techno focused aesthetic that we hear today. And now as a label owner, he remains dedicated to nurturing new production talent through his own Mindshake Records, an imprint that has garnered worldwide success in its own right. The Barcelona based artist is showing no signs of slowing down, perpetually casting his eye and mind forward into the future as he looks to push electronic music relentlessly onwards. This summer will see the Spaniard hitting Ibiza regularly, playing exclusively for Richie Hawtin’s ibiza-voice.com 3636 TheClubbingBible.Net INTERVIEW PACO OSUNA ENTER. parties as one of the night’s residents. Fresh from an amazing Sonar week, I Voice caught up with Paco to discuss the event, working with Minus and of course his own Mindshake Records imprint. First things first, how was Sonar this year? What were your highlights? It was amazing and really special for many reasons but first of all because I‘ve played Sonar Festival again after seven years and at the ENTER. stage for the first time. We also did a Minus Vs Mindshake Showcase at CLUB4 and it was a blast! Being from Barcelona yourself, are you proud to welcome the electronic music world to your home city like this? Does it also mean you have some insider knowledge on where the best parties are going to be? Yes, I‘m very proud since promoters, labels and DJs are in Barcelona for the whole week and Barcelona becomes the epicenter of electronic music during that period of time. This doesn‘t mean that I can know each party in town, as there are so many parties that this would be impossible. How did your Mindshake Vs Minus showcase go? You seem to have a great working relationship with Richie and the guys? As mentioned, the party was a blast! My TheClubbingBible.Net 37 INTERVIEW PACO OSUNA INTERVIEW PACO OSUNA PLAYING ON AUGUST 6TH, 22ND &29TH @ SPACE. relationship with Richie and all the other guys at Minus is really special. It really is a kind of family affair. Where did you first meet Richie and how has your friendship developed? We have a strong relationship because it‘s always been a very clear and very honest one. We’ve known each other since 1998 after meeting in France and until 2005 it was basically a friendship. Then it turned into a working relationship for Plus8 and finally in 2008 I became part of the Clonk roster. Are you looking forward to being part of ENTER. in Ibiza again this summer? What is so special about ENTER. parties? This year I‘m in Ibiza working exclusively as a resident DJ for ENTER. It‘s really something special for me since I‘m part of the project not only in playing music but it‘s also 38 TheClubbingBible.Net something that goes beyond that. Richie involves me in many ways, sharing ideas and suggestions on many aspects of the event. You also did a Mindshake party in Ibiza in May. How was that and are you planning more label showcases in Ibiza throughout the summer? The party was really good and it kind of reminded me of memories back in the old days because it was a couple of years since I’ve played at Sankeys ever since the ENTER. exclusivity. Fer BR and Barem were amazing. It was my first gig in Ibiza this year and full of friends and good energy. The label seems to have a strong ethos geared towards developing new and exciting talent. Do you think that is an important focus for you label and who are the guys that are really exciting you at the minute? This is the focal point and the goal for the label: To believe in them and wish them a prosperous career. There are so many artists on the label to believe in and be excited for. Fer BR is more like techno, Lorenzo Bartoletti is more tech-house, Sean Random is more deep. Everyone has something different that makes them special and I certainly cannot choose only one! What is your biggest challenge in running your own label? I wish that all my new artists can reach and have their own space in this world. Have you got any new productions on the way? Where will you be touring over the next few weeks? I’m working on a new EP with many artists collaborations like Paul Ritch, Fer BR, Kabale und Liebe, but I cannot say when it will be released since my calendar is very full for the next few months. I‘ll be playing all around Europe and the States, like EDC Las Vegas, Tomorrowland, Monegros, Creamfields, Loveland and many clubs… Really too much to remember. Do you get the chance to relax and have time off in Ibiza much? What do you like to do with time off there? It really doesn‘t happen so often, but for two weeks every season I like to stay with my girlfriend and my dogs, catch up with friends and make my famous paella! Great, thank you very much! Words by Tom Jones / ibiza-voice.com TheClubbingBible.Net 39 SPOT ON ZOO The Zoo expansion From Ibizato England´S deepest forests The height of summer is upon us. With temperatures consistently soaring into the high 30s and all the island’s major club nights open for business, the heat is on and competition is fierce. From struggling underground promoters to burned out ravers, the early casualties of the summer have emerged emphasizing once again a seemingly timeless truth for the less commercial side of the white isle - to survive the Ibiza summer is tough, to thrive and grow nigh on impossible. Yet, if one were looking for reassurance that the underground can thrive in Ibiza, a visit to one of the twice-weekly parties held at the zoo in Benimussa shows that nothing 40 TheClubbingBible.Net is impossible. Channel Zoo on a Wednesday and The Zoo Project on a Saturday are both in full swing. The new Zoo festival in the UK is just another sign that things are going in the right direction for the promoters. They’ve not always had it easy but the hard work has paid off over the years. Last year saw the very first Zoo Project Festival in the UK with many of their residents playing alongside a host of established international DJs. This year the festival comes to Donington Park and with Grandmaster Flash and a backto-back-to-back show from DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter and Mark Farina already announced, it looks set to be one hell of a big party. TheClubbingBible.Net 41 SPOT ON ZOO The immersive theatrical nature of the parties mixed with a tried and tested musical combination of established artists alongside up-and-coming talent each and every season offers something unique, something new. The Zoo is the island’s ever-expanding organic carnival. “We try to grow every year,” explains Zoo resident Defex. “This year the sound has massively improved. We’ve refurbished many of our chill-out areas in a reclaimed, vintage style. It’s like weekly minifestivals. We like to create a different vibe at the Zoo events.” 42 TheClubbingBible.Net SPOT ON ZOO The bookings have always veered towards the underground while the ethos behind the parties has always allowed up and coming resident DJs the opportunity to thrive. Yet this year the Ibiza bookings seem ever so slightly more sophisticated, at once aware of electronic music’s future while subtly glancing back at its past. The likes of Breach, George Fitzgerald and Scuba have seen the cosmic dancers piling in yet A Guy Called Gerald, and Chicago legends Virgo Four and Chez Damier have played to equally enthusiastic crowds. One rising star riding the wave of support the Zoo offer their residents is Michael James. Rocking the crowd at least once a week at the Zoo, with further gigs penciled in at Sankeys this summer and a new compilation mix, the first ever to be released on Channel Zoo Recordings, released earlier this summer, it would be safe to say that Michael’s is a name you’re going to be hearing a lot more in future. “Michael typifies everything the Zoo is about so it was only right that he mixed our first compilation,” says Defex. They may have a label and UK festival to their name but there’s no danger of the Zoo crew getting carried away with it all. One trip to the old zoo at Benimussa on a Wednesday or a Saturday can confirm that. In fact the huge writing on the wall as you go on sums it up nicely: There is no Zoo without you! Channel Zoo runs every Wednesday until 4th September. The Zoo project runs every Saturday until 28th September. The Zoo Project Festival UK is at Donington Park from 30th August – 1st September 2013. James Zabiela A blond ‘lunatic’ waving an iPad in the air, smiling infectiously and connecting with each and every person on the dance floor: Something like that is usually the first encounter with Britain born DJ and producer James Zabiela. The We Love resident is notorious for his DJ wizardry, applying unusual gadgets with the unadulterated joy of children when they play with their first toy train. Catch him live this August in Ibiza at two exclusive dates for We Love on Sundays. Once called the ‘technically best DJ in the world’ by a London magazine, James Zabiela is first and foremost a very faithful DJ. In Ibiza he has been playing exclusively at only one night for over a decade: for the legendary Sunday debauchery that is We Love. In the festival-like line ups he usually takes care of the morning hours in the main room, playing his blend of tech-house and techno with so much personality that you 58 TheClubbingBible.Net can’t help but like him. This man’s charisma is only matched by his excellent taste in music so his best gigs can be the most fun a sophisticated electronic music lover can have on the island of Ibiza. Last year, with his extensive We Love experience Zabiela was given the honour to even curate himself four nights of the party he calls his Ibizan home. The ‘Born Electric’ floor featured guests like Modeselektor, Shackleton and Midland. It is also the name for his fairly new label where Zabiela released his latest EP ‘The Healing’ in 2012. It is a calm and emotional, almost spheric piece with faint traces of claps and dreamy synths and probably surprisingly musical to some who only know his banging party sets for clubs. However, the most influential artists in the history of the world had this interesting duality in them: An inner fight between an introverted side and the extroverted phases, which seems to be the never ceasing source for creativity and artistic talent. Also technological innovator and nerd James Zabiela helped Pioneer Electronics in the development of some of their most successful gadgets and there is hardly a set where you do not get to see and especially hear him trying some new device. Even an iPad turns into an instrument in his hands. This August he plays Space on the 4th and 25th for the island institution We Love. The well known Ibiza brand ‘Zoo Project’ booked Zabiela for their yearly UK Festival at Donington Park, Midlands. Don’t miss out from August 30th to September 1st! Growing up in Vienna, the beautiful city of classical music, inspired young Cassy to start a music career herself. And isn’t the work as a DJ in many ways similar to that of the conductor of an orchestra? Originally planning a career in acting, a friend convinced her to try djing instead. Successfully! After breaking onto the Viennese music scene and a short stay in Geneva where she got introduced to an upand-coming Luciano, Cassy finally settled for Berlin in 2003 where she’s been playing the legendary Panorama Bar ever since. And it is probably this venue that characterizes her sound most (or is it the other way around already?): Warm and welcoming housey vibes lead you unsuspectingly into the deeper and darker recesses of her sets before emerging into almost latino flavoured daylight again. Releases on Cocoon and Perlon and gigs at the renowned Circoloco in Ibiza over the years made her even enter Rolling Stone magazine’s current list of the “25 DJs who rule the world” where she is in good company with legends like Carl Cox and Underworld. TheClubbingBible.Net 67 ARTIST CHECK ARTIST CHECK Reboot Never stop a running system “Reboot” is a computer term for the process of restarting a running system. Nothing describes this summer of change for the artist Reboot better than this description. Longtime Cadenza artist Frank Heinrich has only recently split from Luciano’s iconic Cadenza label to spread his wings with a weekly residency at the Ushuaia Tower and additional gigs at the new underground daytime event Ants. Reboot has come a long way since his first suit and tie job in Germany. Originally spearheading the ‘new sound of Frankfurt’ 68 TheClubbingBible.Net along Cocoon friend Chris Tietjen, Reboot evolved to become one of the most outstanding Cadenza artists. Especially 2009 will always be remembered as the year when he celebrated his real breakthrough. Among other important gigs it was in this year that he played for Väth’s Cocoon night in Ibiza for the first time, a precursor of things to come. Brought up with Frankfurt’s techno, Reboot soon leaned more towards Latin-oriented house music which made him the perfect match for Luciano’s Cadenza label. What followed were years of innumerable parties with the Cadenza Vagabundos all over the island of Ibiza and the rest of Europe. In 2010 the long overdue album “Shunyata” was released and is still a Cadenza bestseller. Last season Reboot released a track that would soon become something like the island’s summer hit: “Caminando” was rinsed by innumerable underground DJs of most diverse musical backgrounds. Meaning ‘walking’, it combined alluring Latino vocals by a spanish choir with Reboot’s fierce and dry drums. Released on Ricardo Villalobos’ imprint it was perfect for those Ushuaia summer open air moments! Constantly pushing himself to experimenting, Reboot’s live act is now too a coveted feature in the line ups of the most prodigious parties in Ibiza. So when Richie Hawtin and Luciano combined the forces of their two labels last season in a memorable night, Reboot delivered an impressive live performance at the Space terrace. Drawing on diverse musical influences from jazz to world music, his sets stir something in most of us and cater for a rich, sweaty party atmosphere that is already comparable to the biggest names in our industry. So high time to try something on his own. Out of Luciano’s shadow, ironically but coincidentally at the same time as Luciano’s sets, Reboot plays every Tuesday until midnight at a free party on the chic, new Ushuaia Tower. Sporting an interesting Rock’n’Beatz concept, he invites a rock artist to play with him in the island’s only rockhouse crossover event. Considering that the whole event is completely free and with support by DJs like Chris Tietjen, Martinez and Michel Cleis, it is the perfect warm up for a Tuesday night on the island. What looks like the CV of a distinguished DJ with a career of twenty years is just the August calendar of Eats Everything. TAKE THE NEXT S TEP . Earning the trust of revered artists just took him astonishing two years. Daniel Pearce from Bristol had his first major release “Entrance Song” in 2011. His next two bass bombs got picked up by Dirtybird maestro Claude vonStroke. What begins now is the dream of thousands of bedroom DJs around the world. It may have helped that his emergence on the scene in the midst of the deep house wave coincided with a huge demand of particularly his type of music. “Entrance Song” is featured in so many mixes and sets that you’ve probably already heard it without knowing it was Eats Everything, resulting in a familiar “Aah, that’s the tune” when you listen to it now. Other beloved tracks include the furious “Jagged Edge” with its shrill piano pieces and “Vertigo”, which, by relentlessly going up and down the octave scale, induces exactly that: A not unpleasant dizziness like the ride in a really cool rollercoaster. Eats Everything’s creative potential is released full-on in his coveted remixes for the likes of Jamie Jones, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Four Tet. The rebels do not believe in trashy funky house and cheesy chill-out: The Capadi boat runs on propelling Tech House. Up to 150 crazy party pirates and five hours of sea, sun, and music for a rebellious trip of fun. A rebel, at last! Departures: Every Tuesday and Friday at 17:00 from Marina Botafoch. Meeting Point & Tickets: Tantra bar in Playa d‘en Bossa at 15:30.
