Early Childhood special education teachers provide and oversee services for children ages 3 to 5 who experience developmental delays or other disabilities. Elementary school special education staff serve kindergarten through sixth grade students with disabilities as stipulated in their Individual Education Plans (IEP). Teachers seek to improve students’ ability to function in academics, communication, social skills and behavior. Middle school special educators provide instruction and support services for students in (some sixth), seventh and eighth grade with an IEP. Each IEP is designed to build skills in identified areas of need and achieve individualized goals and objectives. The Behavioral Support Service programs at Whaley School and Mt. Iliamna are designed to meet the needs of students whose behaviors mandate a more restrictive environment than a neighborhood school can provide. Behavior supports are also provided in neighborhood schools. Adapted physical education specialists promote physical fitness, motor skills and lifetime sports through the use of modified teaching techniques, adapted curriculum or equipment. Alaska State School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ASSDHH) serves deaf and hard of hearing students from throughout the state in three neighborhood schools from preschool through high school. Assistive technology teachers support teams with specific students in the areas of augmentative/alternative communication, written expression and computer access. Audiologists and Hard of Hearing (HOH) teachers assess and treat students who are hearing impaired. They provide academic and selfadvocacy support to ensure that students have access to the curriculum. High school special education provides a range of instructional, career and technical, and community-based opportunities for students. Each IEP is designed to help the student achieve educational and personal goals, and successfully transition to post-secondary life. Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) instruct students who are totally blind, legally blind, partial sighted and deaf-blind. They provide instruction in Braille, enlarged print and orientation mobility. Occupational therapists support special education students to promote hand-function, oralmotor function, and sensory motor skills for successful participation in school activities. Physical therapists support special education students who need assistance with mobility, positioning, and/or accessibility in order to be successful in the school environment. School psychologists collaborate with ASD staff and parents to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of students through assessment, intervention, consultation, counseling and crisis response. Destination 2020: ASD’s Strategic Plan Goals to achieve by 2020 • 90% of students will be proficient in reading, writing and math • 90% of students will graduate high school • Every student will attend school at least 90% of the time • 90% of parents will recommend their child’s school to others • 100% of staff and students will feel safe at school Every child.
