EPLE
LANGUAGE
PROFICIENCY EXAM
www.cepe.unam.mx
The Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros
(CEPE) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma
de México (UNAM) offers the Spanish Language
Proficiency Exam (EPLE).
DESCRIPTION
This exam determines the mastery of the Spanish
Language of a Spanish language student,
regardless of how it was acquired.
According to the results of the exam, the Centro
de Enseñanza para Extranjeros of the UNAM
certifies the linguistic competence or proficiency
whose usefulness is of a different kind both in
the academic as in the working field. In the first
case, for example, it helps to determine the
degree of competence of a foreign student who
wants to study at the BA or post-graduate level
at the university. In the second case it allows
public and private enterprises to find out the
level of linguistic competence of their employees
in order to plan training strategies as well as to
expedite and reduce the cost of the human
resources process (selection, hiring and
rotation). To the employees, on the other hand, it
supplies a document that certifies their linguistic
knowledge, abilities and skills and facilitates
their entrance and personal development in the
working field.

This exam can be taken four times a year on

in an external location is subject to an agreement
in which the date of the visit of the person in
charge of applying the exam would be determined
in conjunction with the corresponding institution.
The results of the exam and corresponding
certification will be issued twenty working days
after its application.
STRUCTURE
This exam consists of 179 questions and a
maximum of 1000 points. It has 4 sections that

purpose to reach a global evaluation of the
language proficiency, the exam evaluates from
elementary to complex linguistic knowledge that
involves pragmatic-cultural aspects or that requires
the use of complex, cognitive skills.
CERTIFICATION
The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
is the only institution able to certify the Spanish
