BIE N V E N I D OS
B
Plain Local First (JPLF)! Este año presentamos una guía más
completa, conteniendo 175 negocios.
movimiento.
Atentamente,
Kim Mitchell

HELLO and
W E LCO M E
W
elcome to the fourth edition of the Jamaica Plain Local
First (JPLF) business directory! This year’s directory is
larger than ever, with 175 businesses. You can turn to this
guide to find independent businesses in all corners of Jamaica Plain
and adjoining neighborhoods. New this year is a more dynamic
and robust website, which helps you find businesses in your
current location. Keep an eye on www.jplocalfirst.org because new
businesses will be added to the online directory throughout the
year. Our members are also identifiable by the window stickers and
car magnets that you will see throughout the area. Make sure you
mention that you found them through JP Local First.
JPLF is a nonprofit network of locally owned and independent
businesses founded in February 2013. Our mission is to support,
promote, and celebrate our independent business community
by educating the public about the significant economic,
environmental, and cultural benefits of a strong local economy.
Research shows that for every $100 you spend at a locally
owned business, at least $48 will stay in your community
and circulate in the local economy. Talk about buying power!
Compare this to $14 for a multinational chain like Walmart, Whole
Foods or Target.
A unique aspect of JPLF is that we are the only business association
to represent all four JP business districts – Egleston, Hyde/Jackson,
Centre/South and Forest Hills – as well as welcome members
from adjoining neighborhoods. In order to encourage you to seek
out new favorite spots, this year’s directory includes the JPLF Shop
Local Passport, a fun contest that invites you to visit member
businesses throughout JP. You can find the passport and more
information on page 45.
We know you love Jamaica Plain, and part of what makes JP so
unique is the huge number of fantastic locally owned independent
businesses that choose to locate here. Let’s be good neighbors and
keep our business community vibrant and diverse. Thank you for
being part of the movement.
Yours Locally,
Kim Mitchell

recursos no sostenibles.
actividades.
Juntos podemos fortalecer nuestra economía. Apoye a nuestro vecindario
y preserve nuestros recursos locales.

WHY DO WE THINK
CHOOSING LOCAL IS SO
IMPORTANT?
When you make your purchases at locally
owned businesses, you:
1. Reinvest dollars in the local economy. For every $100 spent at
a locally-owned business, $48 gets reinvested into the local
economy, compared to chain stores which only spend $14 of
that $100 locally (mostly in wages). Shopping local is also
healthy for the national economy, since it distributes wealth
more evenly and fairly.
Are chain stores less expensive? Not always, and chains invest a
lot in advertising and pricing strategies to make you believe
their prices are lower. When you account for the money that
leaves the neighborhood, chain shopping starts to be very
expensive.
2. Preserve the unique character of our community. Businesses
owned locally by our neighbors reflect and preserve the
uniqueness of the JP area. If we make our purchases at locally
owned businesses instead of at chains, we help to preserve our
neighborhood's diversity and character.
3. Create jobs and responsible entrepreneurship. At local and
independent businesses, more jobs are created per dollar of
revenue than jobs created per dollar at chains. When a chain
moves into a neighborhood, new jobs are created initially
(often low wage) but the net effect for a region tends to be
job loss, as local businesses lose revenue to chain stores.
4. Support environmental sustainability. Locally owned
businesses are better able to source locally and lessen
transportation impact than chains, which are standardized
across hundreds of locations. JP Local First members
themselves like to buy from local producers, suppliers, and
service providers because they understand the tremendous
impact of going local.
5. Strengthen the community fabric. Locally owned businesses
make for a more connected and powerfully interdependent
community. Local owners take pride in making business
decisions that strengthen our neighborhood. And in times of
need, it's our friends, families, and neighbors we rely on most.
Together we can strengthen our economy, support our neighborhood and
preserve our local resources. Visit www.jplocalfirst.org for citations and for our
directory of locally owned businesses and more...
