This new proposal will stand as a entrance-gate to the campus providing a reference for navigating around the area. The location is next to the canteen wich both ensures a close connection to the campus and creates a link to the future administrative buildings. The library will hold more than 12 km of books and other medias within its more than 10.000 m2 of floor area. Furthermore it will incorporate ten stories, accomodating both library functions and a range of teaching, seminar, conference and recreational functions. The library also holds the entire staff group, situated within the top floors overlooking the campus area. The basement holds a large compact storage for books along with two large auditoriums, able to conduct both educational and entertaining purposes. The main building consists of three main functions stacked above each other. An open ground floor, the ‘Book Room’ and an administrative wing. The ground floor provides access from all sides taking visitors through the main stair sluice and into the heart of the library. Here the ‘Book Room’ is held containg the entire library function. The large ‘Mountains’ of the room both carries and provides access to the above located administration. 04/31 06/31 reading area reading area kiosk fire escape open office reading hall open office reception fire escape book store cafe meeting room seminar closet toilet work area cafe conference exhibition 0.00 m locker room office locker room conference relax relax area fire escape relax office meeting room fitness handicap toilet office reception fitness storage browsing area -2.00 m toilet fire escape open office cafe depot open office media and relax area server room compact shelving storage sevice auditorium park tecnique room plaza sevice sevice park park plaza plaza 36m m 36 sevice park 30 m public square sevice administration park book room public square public floor 30 mm 27,5 23 m 23 mm 20,5 19,5 m 19,5 17 mm 16,5 m 16,5 14 mm 13,5 m 13,5 11 mm 10,5 m 10,5 8 mm 6 5mm 6m 3,5 m 00m m 0m -4 m -2m 10 m 10 m Interior design, NORD A/S Office 2009 Internship at NORD A/S (9th Semester MA) Project type: Individual Supervisor: Kim Flensborg, Architect M.A.A and Stine Andersson, Architect M.A.A This interior design project was the first case I was given when I arrived to the Nord A/S office. For long time the direction have had a wish to renovate and lighten up the lower level of the two-story office. I was put in charge of the sketching phase and held weekly meetings and critiques with owner and design director Kim Flensborg about the project and my design proposals. Initially, a concept was chosen from a conceptual sketch introducing a circular counter in the back of the room. I then conducted a 3D model of the proposal together with sketches and suggestions for the counter design. This I presented for the entire office, where it was approved and the work drawing could be started. At the same time, the work with designing the counter began, and a building company and a carpentner were brought in and introduced to the design. The counter functions both as a casual meeting area for the staff together with a resting area for clients. The project included a new floor, painting, a large logo on the back wall, new furniture and arrangment together with a glazed meeting box and the circular counter furniture which also contains parts of the office library. The total budget of the project was about 20.000 $ and the project was realised during my time at the office, so that I could attend the official initiation ceremony of the renovation at the annual christmas party at the office december 2009. 08/31 Competition for Mixed Use Block 2009 Internship at NORD A/S (9th Semester MA) Project type: Co-work Supervisor: Kim Flensborg, Architect M.A.A and Thomas Solberg, Architect M.A.A This competition was held after the termination of a old educational building in the Aalborg suburbs. The project included more than 100 appartments for both students, families and elderly tenants. I followed the project from the earli client meetings and to the competition hand-in. Within the process I was responsible for conducting a draft build 3D contextual model along with the development of the 3D building model used for client meetings. When the design was approved I was responsible for the layout of the competion proposal folder but was later moved to the graphic presentation area due to a major flu-epidemic hitting the office. Here, I conducted an areal view for the presentation poster and also produced elevated drawing for the presentation. From the 3D building and contextual model I provided the design director Kim Flensborg a set of different views for presentation sketches along with a poster. Finally, I was responsible for the 3D model conducting the background picture of the major presentation “shot” pictured on this page. As this was my first “real” competition it was very intresting to follow the entire process from talking with the clients and engineers and following the development of a project from early idea to final presentation along with the planning and preparement for a competition. 10/31 Værelse Køkken/ophold Toilet/ bad Kollegiebolig Entre Toilet/ bad Køkken Værelse Alrum Terrasse Soveværelse Mindre familiebolig Værelse Værelse Soveværelse Terrasse Stue Toilet/ bad Køkken/alrum Entre Større familiebolig ILLUSTRATION FRA SKOLESTUE Fire/Ambulance Station, DK 2009 Internship at NORD A/S (9th Semester MA) Project type: Co-work Supervisor: Thomas Solberg, Architect M.A.A This project was a fast produced project for a major developer and contractor in Denmark, about to buy and build an ambulance station for the private danish rescue service Falck. Here, I assisted the architect in doing a 3D model of the draft Autocad line-work drawings in order to get spatial insight within the building. I further produced the draft pictures for the architect for the presentation images pictured on this page. Finally, I also assisted the architect in drawing the elevations for the presentation catalogue. 12/31 0943 SEPTEMBER 2009 ARKITEKTFIRMAET NORD AS CALUM EJENDOMSSELSKAB A/S 0943 SEPTEMBER 2009 ARKITEKTFIRMAET NORD AS CALUM EJENDOMSSELSKAB A/S Passport and Counter design 2009 Internship at NORD A/S (9th Semester MA) Project type: Co-work Supervisor: Søren Andersen, Architect M.A.A In 2007, the NORD A/S designed an extention for the Aalborg Airport and together with this the airport also ordered a number of different counters for the airline companies operating the new extention. Together with the architect I joined the project conducting a 3D model to verify the components and assembly of the counters. I also did several presentation pictures along with colour tests of the counters for the airport representives. After this, the airport - in order to fulfill the requirements of the new Schengen borders of Europe - ordered further two design-related passport counters. Here, I again joined up with the architect to design this passport cabinet, which should fit the work of two police officers with a desk and a space for a PC. I produced a 3D model that showed a rough way of assembly and this was used for several colour scheme tests. Again, I produced presentation material for the airport and after meetings involving the police the project was approved and a carpenter was contacted. I later found that the project had suffered a halt after I left the office but when travelling from Aalborg Airport last year the counters were in place and this photo was taken. Facade Renovation of high rise 2009 Internship at NORD A/S (9th Semester MA) Project type: Individual Supervisor: Kim Flensborg, Architect M.A.A and Stine Andersson, Architect M.A.A Along with the interior design task this project constituted the main two jobs at the Nord A/S office. As with the interior task this project also lasted the entire period of the internship. The project took its starting point with client meetings and meetings with a engineer. Here the requirements were addressed and the design began. During my time on the project I delivered design proposals for critiques weekly with the design director and my archtect supervisor. After several visits and meetings with a local engineer a facade proposal along with a new proposal for a railing concept were developed. The final project included two projects that were presented on a large tenant critique. The winning design featured a tilted glazed panelrailing, able to reflect the sky while letting the light through prior to the old metal panellings. Along with the design I also learned to seek prices and together with an experienced building constructor produced the draft budget for the entire renovation summing up 560.000 $. At the presentation the tenant counsil voted and the project was approved and is in a development phase at the moment. 14/31 Mixed use zero-energy Housing 2011 8th Semester MA / Main project (group) Supervisor: Lars Brorson Fich, Associate Professor, Architect M.A.A This housing proposal features a large scale zeroenergy mixed use residential block located down-town city of Aalborg. The program tasked the project to design interesting housing possibilities that were able to compete with traditional villas. The complex contains a large number of student flats along with senior apartments and large sized family flats with large open terrasses. Underneath the complex a large multi-hall is located along with common facilities and parking. The zero-energy concept used related to the german PHPP standard. Windows are designed to face south in order to gain energy in winter time and to be shaded during summer time. Also the compactness of the block and the insulation used for the project reached 450 mm along with the use of good U- and G-valued windows. 16/31 Hobro Viking Museum, DK 2010 7th Semester MA / Main project (group) Supervisor: Adrian Carter, Teaching Associate Professor, Architect M.A.A This project concerns the design of a new museum building at the old Viking fortress Fyrkat by Hobro. The museum has to exhibit artefacts from the Viking age, and will be the only one in Denmark to provide information about the circular forts, their creation and function. It focuses on telling a story through the exhibitions, where the visitor is taken on a journey through different parts of the Viking life, while the architecture creates an evocative backdrop for the artefacts to emphasize their story. The architecture of the museum shows a clear point of view regarding the role of the architecture in exhibiting the art. The things that are exhibited in the Fyrkat Viking Museum are historic artefacts that are shown to the visitor with the purpose of providing him with an insight into the Viking life and history. Thus, the architecture creates a strong atmosphere that underlines the messages of the artefacts. The art and the architecture flows together to create an unified whole, which is the setting of the journey through the Viking life at Fyrkat. 18/31 C ain afé M se n sk itio kio hib d an ex 1 2 00 m ll 4 ha 16 m or id orr . lc hb ira ex Sp to or nce rrid tre co en aff n St itio hib 2 Ex m 70 2 m 2 m riu 0 m 5 ito e 6 12 ud c om A ren t nro En io at rv Pre 2 4 ay om llw hro ha g nc lu kin Lin aff st d 2 an m 43 op sh ork 2 w m 80 om es ro d ffic oo ss la W O C 0 m 2 Section C Section C Exh. box Section D Exit Section D Exh. box Section E Exhibition hall Section E Exh. box Section B Section A Section B Section A Spiral corridor Office Domecile for Dreamhouse 2009 6th Semester BA / Main project (group) Supervisor: Lars Brorson Fich Associate Professor, Architect M.A.A The Dreamhouse Inc. is an umbrella organisation and company renting out numerous small office spaces within larger office buildings. Located on the very edge of the Aalborg harbour scape this project proposal covering more than four thousand m2. of office space, provides a bright and interconnected work space with common reception, foyer, canteen and utility rooms. The design attemts to break with the range of modernistic developer residentials located along the harbour front with the distinctive facetted dark appearence. At the same time its public cafe is thought to re-vitalize the harbour front, in order to draw in life around the day and evening time. The construction is made up through four large concrete cylinders which hold two 2 meter high steel beams which initially carry the entire building creating a completely open and light structured ground floor. The skin is comprised by a double glazed facade with additional tiles applied providing shade during the day time hours. 20/31 Technical Drawing of small Villa 2009 6th Semester BA / Minor project (individual) Supervisor: Poul Henning Kirkegaard, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering Skillevæg: 108 mm blødstrøget tegl – vandskures og males Overlægger i sten som øvrigt murværk Kældervægge mod jord: U-værdi max 0,15 W/m2 k Filterdug Polystyren drænplade Berapning, asfaltering Lecablokke 12 mm puds maling, vandbaseret Kældervæg mod trappe: 2 U-værdi max: 0,31W/m k 12 mm puds Lecatermblokke 12 mm puds maling, vandbaseret Terrændæk med gulvvarme: U-værdi max 0,15 W/m2k 16 mm plankegulv i hvid faxe lud-behandlet bøg Trinlydsdæmpning som Tuplex-underlag (filtdug) 0,2 mm plastfolie dampspærre/radonspærre med overlap på fundament – alle samlinger tapes 40 mm slidlag – afretningslag 100 mm armeret beton med gulvvarmeslanger 2 x 150 mm sundolitt S60 (flamingo-plade) Kapillarbrydende lag (komprimeret sandafretning) Etagedæk: 16 mm plankegulv i hvid faxe lud-behandlet bøg Trinlydsdæmpning som Tuplex-underlag (filtdug) 0,2 mm plastfolie dampspærre/radonspærre med overlap på fundament – alle samlinger tapes 40 mm slidlag – afretningslag 100 mm beton med gulvvarme 100 mm sundolitt/hård mineraluld 160 armeret betondæk 22 x 100 mm afhøvlet forskalling pr. 1000 mm 22 x 100 mm afhøvlet forskalling pr. 400 mm 13 mm gipslofter med affræsede kanter til spartling snit snit This minor project was conducted to get an understanding of how construction/ work drawings for an arcitectural project is presented. Here, the director of the museum proposed a task to design an expansion for the museum as the museum after many years of growing numbers of visitors are experiencing a lack of exhibition space. The demands were not to build within the museum court yard and on top of the very museum which is a national heritage site of Denmark. This project proposal was therefore located on the hill side behind the museum, half escavated into the hill side. To link the new wing with the existing Alto building a large corridor was drawn towards the present museum, taking visitors dried shoed over external exhibition spaces. The first boxed building houses a large theater able to hold more than 100 spectators while the main and most open box holds a research/art library and a pleasant cafe area overlooking the court yard. The final volume holds the new exhibition space and incorporates the possibility for video performance and other art forms demanding a total closure of light. At the end of the corridor, the staircase takes the visitor down inside the court yard allowing them to take a closer look at the large size sculptures within the museum garden. High rise Dormitory for Aalborg 20108 4th Semester BA / Main project (group) Supervisor: Lasse Andersson, Associate Professor, Architect M.A.A The project takes its inspiration in the future plans of the old hospital area located in the western part of Aalborg. When a new University Hospital is build in 2020, the site will have to be re-integrated within the city and a large number of housing, residential and shops will occupy the area. The vision is that the area is going to be re-vitalized as a young neighbourhood with a large Dormitory area located within the very center of the area. The Dormitory proposal is comprimised by three buildings facing each other rising up to 12 stories at the highest. The distinctive pattern created on the outer facades is conducted by a incorporation of a small terrasse to every appartment. The size of the flats are 45 m2 and each appartment is provided by a small kitchen, entre, bathroom/toilet and a living room which can be translated into bedroom at night time. In the opposite side of the appartment the blocks join together 12 appartments with a common room for stay and social interaction. Underneath the complex is a large community area linked in with direct connection to the adjacent railroad. In the middle of the buildings lay a large green recreational area which also reaches out of the site incorporating a large covered bridge passage on top of the railroad. 24/31 Chair design 2007 3rd Semester BA / Main project (group) Supervisor: Marianne Stockholm, Professor, ID, M.D.D. This lounge chair was designed as part of the main project which circled around industrial design and the term “Nordic/Scandinavian design”. As part of the semester a study of Architect Jørn Utzon was conducted, investigating his younger years in Aalborg and his relation to the ship building industry and maritime world of his father. The chair is inspired by the traditional danish wooden build Viking ships and later sail boats of Aalborg with a direct relation to the frame of the chair. The frame is created in an aluminium cast mold, and coated with a resistant coating in order to prevent tear. The seat is made of tough sail-cloth which is both light and very strong in tension. The chair can be completely disassembled in order of compactness when shipped. The chair was, together with the other furniture produced on the semester, exhibited on a virtual 3D furniture exhibition within the Utzon Center, located at the harbour front of Aalborg. Miniprojekt 2008 A minor project concerning the aspects of ergonomics was the starting point for this door handle design. This course was followed by a course which featured a range of industrial fabrication methods. As a result the door handle was drawn in 3D in rhino and then converted into a data file where a CNC mill produced a foam model of the handle. Later in the course I also tried to use a rapid-prototyping device known as a “sugar printer” - which produced a well-crafted model in a material alike porcelain. At the end of the course the handle was produced in another type of foam and we visited an iron foundry where the model was used as a positive mold for an aluminium cast mold. The model was produced at a 10 % larger scale due to the shrinkage of aluminium. After half an hour the door handle had cooled and the mold could be removed and an aluminium copy of the handle had been produced. Its design features the inspiration of a leave hovering in the air. The construction uses a wooden structure underneath the roof and inside the walls. The roof is made with copper both because of its smooth cover and because of its patina over time. The house is thought to slowly merge with its sourroundings as the roof line changes colour towards a greenish look. Wooden Pedestrian Bridge, DK 2010 7th Semester MA / Minor project (individual) Supervisor: Alberto Pugnale, Assistant Professor and Isak Worre Foged, Research Assistant The aim was to evoke a poetic feeling of movement and transformation across the bridge. With a narrow designated entrance, the bridge creates a motion of direction towards the middle, where it opens up and gives rise to a hub for view and rest. This is done by use of a fan-shape and by a change in angle within the single element, which changes both the width of the path and the angle of the railing. In terms of construction the aim was to construct a bridge using a very small amount of material in order to appear slender and elegant while keeping the overall weight down. The bridge pathway is comprised by a continuous straight line across the bridge, incorporating access, safety, and functionality. The bridge itself is designed to take forces of compression within the railing in the upper part above the pathway and tension forces in the lower part using thin wire. It incorporates the use of triangles everywhere it is possible, achieving a very strong and rigid bulk while still maintaining a tight and elegant repetitive appearance. 28/31 ICE-AID 2007 2nd Semester BA / Minor project (individual + group project) Supervisor: Anna Marie Fisker Associate Professor, Architect M.A.A ICE-AID takes its origin within an internal-held design competition between more than 100 architect students at Architecture & Design. Here, the students were to create a proposal combining the act of charity together with a danish quality-producing food company. Signed project was selected as the winning proposal for a commercial produced ice cream which through its appearence and surplus would tell the story of an act of charity when bought. The proposal combined an ice cream produced by the danish ice cream manufacturer Ryå-IS and the danish wing of International Red Cross to be linked and this concept was found to be the winner together with seven other projects. Within a full-three-week Summer School at the University the concepts were to be worked through, with a range of staff brougth in with a donation of 40.000 $ from the European Union Health Food Programme. Here the concept of ICE AID and one other project were chosen to be the strongest and thus selected to further work development alone. At this time Denmark was hosting the International Climate Conference known as COP15, thus the concept of the charity aspect was found to better suit the problematics of the melting artic poles due to the strong link with the ice cream. To emphasize the concept, an ice cream concept was developed presenting and serving the ice cream in a bowl of pure ice. This gave the buyer a dramatic experience when holding the cold ice in his/her hand demostrating the seriousness of the artic melting. Together with the RYÅ-IS a mold was produced in China, and the ICE AID ice cream had its public presentation to the Aalborg By Night where it was served at the central square of Aalborg - all 200 test produced ice creams were sold within the first hour. Later, the ice cream has been used at the celebration of danish artist Ingvar Cronhammar’s 60th birthday along with other events. Shelter for an Ornithologist, DK 2010 8th Semester MA / Minor project (individual) Supervisor: Lars Brorson Fich Assistant Professor, Architect M.A.A This project is about the design of a 60 m2 dwelling for an Ornithologist at the northern danish fishing town Hanstholm. The project included at full day of exploration around the old WWII bunkers in order to locate a building site and gather inspiration from the rough flora and fauna in the area. The idea of designing the dwelling as a “highrise” building comes from the old WWII German artillery observation bunkers at the Hanstholm site (part of the Atlantic Wall), where constant surveillance is combined with staying/living for a shorter or longer period of time. To stand the harsh weather conditions of the danish west coast of Jutland, the core of the building is constructed with thick walls of concrete which draws a parallel back to the heavy fortified bunkers. As with the bunkers, the ability to enclose themselves from the surrounding under an attack, is incorporated into the dwelling in form of shutters. Long wooden boards – with the inspiration from the chaotic grasses growing around the site – gives the house its distinctive wild appearance, growing up near the next-by hill top. As the shutters provide a certain cover from the wind and weather, they also tell when the tower is inhabited or closed-down within rough winter time. The dwelling includes a small kitchen, toilet, storage, working and sleeping facilities as well as a high situated partly hidden terrace for observation of birds. 30/31 A KITCHEN/ TOILET/ STORAGE 19 Sqm WORKSPACE/ SLEEPING RELAXING 19 Sqm A
