neighbours in the east. Today, the border is one of the friendliest in the world, but it hasn’t always been that way. The stories about the dramatic history of Torne Valley are many. Take a detour across the mountains to Överkalix in the next river valley. Listen to the earthy dialect of Överkalix, its very own and important part of the area’s identity. And don’t miss the coast with its shallow seaside swimming and fantastic archipelago. Take a boat trip out among the islands or drive your car to the beautiful Seskarö. Oh, and don’t forget to taste your way along your journey: smoked or grilled freshly caught fish, freshly baked round flatbread and Finnish rye bread with melted butter, the excellent Kalix bleak roe with its protected designation of origin, dunking in a cup, game and berries. Raw produce offered by nature without additives. As the icing on the cake, we can reveal that the region is one of the sunniest in Sweden with an impressive number of sunshine hours every summer, and not uncommonly temperatures among the highest in Sweden. Welcome to an enriching journey of discovery this summer. Kalix is beautifully situated where the impressive and pristine Kalix River flows into the Gulf of Bothnia. The waters around Kalix are hiding fabulous riches. There are a lot of wild salmon and you’ve probably heard of, perhaps even eaten the gold of the sea – Kalix bleak roe (Kalixlöjrom). Kalix bleak roe is unique and is therefore origin protected under the European Union standard. The proximity to the East has characterized Kalix and the old wars against Russia have left their mark. In the area there are graves of Russian soldiers who perished on Swedish soil. And according to legend, there should be spoils of Russian gold buried in the woods north of Pålänge. Today it still attracts people into the forest to dig for gold. In Kalix, you don’t need to choose between coastal or river – here you’ll find both of them. Let yourself be surprised by the adventure and tranquility in an environment where the guests are always at the center. We want to show you the region’s best fishing places, shallow swimming bays and barbecue areas with views over smooth open waters and blue forest-covered hills. The water, with wild rivers, the sea and big lakes, tells the story of eastern Swedish Lapland. Here, the biggest attractions are created by nature itself. And in the summer, when the midnight sun lavishes its light round the clock, you have even more time and energy to fill your days with memorable experiences. There is rich culture with living minority languages, Finnish, Meänkieli and Sami alongside Swedish. The five main towns of Kalix, Haparanda, Övertorneå, Överkalix and Pajala are located at convenient distances apart. This means that you don’t have to choose – you can explore the whole region when you are here on holiday. Follow the Torne River along the border to Finland (yes, it is a different country on the other side of the river, so close!) and be fascinated by the exciting history and culture, closely interwoven with our good HAPARANDA KALIX THE ARCHIPELAGO One of the most beautiful islands is Malören. The horseshoe-shaped island is approximately three kilometers long. The island’s heyday was during the second half of the 18th century, when the herring fishery was extra good. On Malören you will find the extraordinary and most beautiful chapel. It is usually termed as the “small archipelago cathedral”, as it is the only sea church that has a spire on the roof. The building is octagonal with a wooden roof, a church type that was popular around the Gulf of Bothnia in the 18th century. The Church was, before there was a lighthouse on the island, used as a landmark. The Chapel is timbered and inaugurated in 1770. CULTURE ISLAND VASSHOLMEN DON’T MISS: - Arctic Moosefarm - Ekobadet Swimingpool - Camp Frevisören - Hällbergets Adventure park - Hanhivittikko summer pasture - Holgers tractor museum - Balance on the Artic circle Vassholmen is a small beautiful island in the middle of Kalix River. Vassholmen is one of 792 islands in the archipelago of Kalix and here you can enjoy the historical settings, a nice cup of coffee or Bröts Summer Theater, which is open during the summer months. At the island there is also a museum that shows the history of log-driving in Kalix River, from start to the end in 1977. Vassholmen is connected to the mainland by a pontoon bridge. - Jockfall - Mini four-wheeler - Kukkolaforsen - Pajala market - Hulkoffgården - Rajamaa - Restaurant Utblick The border towns of Haparanda in Sweden and Torne in Finland have today grown into one single unit – HaparandaTorne. Visiting this area means twice the range of goods, culture, entertainment, education, and more. Since IKEA and several other large chain stores have chosen to establish here, HaparandaTorne has evolved into a vibrant commercial center, visited by millions of people annually. Other small shops as Butiken på Landet, Taavolagården, Udda med Flit and Pesula Gårdsbutik are well worth a visit. There is also a Swedish-Finnish border culture, developed through centuries with sauna, fishing traditions, smuggling and multilingualism. This border region has also been witness of wars and many other dramatic events through the years. Traces of history can still be seen, like the Orthodox Church, trading houses, museums and a manifold of monuments. The border itself has a special magic. As with the Swedish and Finnish time zones: on the local golf course, you can hit a ball over the border – and it will land an hour earlier because of the time difference. There are also great opportunities for recreation outside the city centers. You can find peace and tranquility in the beautiful Torne Valley, full of traditional culture, or enjoy nature in the unique Archipelago. Stop a day or two and explore the new meeting place in the north. KALIX CHURCH The church that is situated in central Kalix, on the seaside of Kalix River, was built in the 15th century. In 1595 the church caught fire and only the baptismal font and some other things could be saved. In 1716 the Russians plundered the church and during the war in 1809 the Russians used the main building as a stable. KALIX A BOMBPROOF PLACE TO VISIT Forty metres down in Hörmyr hill on Siknäs peninsula there is a top-secret, underground fort, built to defend Töre harbour. Stay overnight in the fort in an unusual setting, to say the least! The facility provides a fantastic experience with its unique settings and stories about the everyday life and building of the secret invasion defence. The museum rooms have exhibitions about the military and the civilian population from the time of the Cold War. Activities for the whole family. GET MORE INFORMATION AT NORTHERNMOST POINT OF THE BAY OF BOTHNIA Round the buoy and put your name and address in the mailbox on the buoy. You will then receive a certificate sent home to you as proof of the fact that you have rounded the northernmost point of the Bay of Bothnia. WWW.HEARTOFLAPLAND.COM HERE YOUR FISHING DREAMS BECOME REALITY! www.haparandatornioinswedishlapland.com Photo: Ted Logardt Heart of Lapland is a Mecca for anglers, with its countless lakes, wild rivers and beautiful archipelagos. There is fishing for everyone here, young and old, beginners and enthusiasts. If you would like to discover your favourite places on your own, the possibilities are endless, and those who prefer fishing camps with guides and courses will find many nice places in much of the region. Here you can catch the fish of your dreams and get experiences for a lifetime. In recent years, our rivers have seen very positive development. They are now among the best salmon rivers in the world, and every year more salmon are caught weighing in at over the magical 40 lb. So, whether you like to angle, fish from a boat, spin or fly-fish, there is something for everyone. ATTRACTIONS / OF INTEREST KUKKOLAFORSEN – KUKKOLA RAPIDS The rapid is the biggest one in the Torne River, the length is 3500 meter and fall height 13,8 meter. The rapid is located 15 km north of HaparandaTorne. The fishing villages by the river were separated in 1809 when Torne River became the border between Sweden and Finland. Both old fishing villages are worth seeing in every season. Great attraction is to watch the locals catching whitefish. You can try river rafting on both sides of the river. Around Kukkolaforsen there is also a fishing museum, old mills, sawmill, a restaurant and a hut for grilling whitefish. FISHING MUSEUM The fishing museum in Kukkola can tell you the story about the salmon runs, whitefish spawning and how the long, narrow boats were traveling. Torne River have since ancient times been the major driving route in the Arctic. SWEDISH LAPLAND ARCHIPELAGO – HAPARANDA DON’T MISS: FISH SPECIES • The archipelago: Salmon, pike, perch, whitefish, grayling and sea trout • The lakes: Pike, perch, pike perch, whitefish, grayling and trout • The rivers: Salmon, trout, grayling, pike, perch and whitefish 5. Kamlunge – Kalix River ÖVERTORNEÅ ÖVERKALIX PAJALA Pajala is molded by a century-long clash and melting pot between Finnish, Swedish and Sámi traditions. The Torne River Valley heritage and identity is deeply rooted in these three cultures, so far as becoming the home of a minority language of its own – Meänkieli. Not to mention the food! The local food traditions, dating back hundreds of years, offer many joyful surprises. Such as Kaffeost, cheese you eat with or in your coffee, and more. Summer in Pajala is something special – fishing, canoeing or rafting trips on any of the five pristine rivers, the cloudberries on the wetlands, elk hunting and berry picking. Enjoy our nature, culture and see our handicrafts traditions. Let the adventure take you away, listen to the silence and you will understand our pride in our home region. With good neighbors such as Finland and the Arctic Circle, Övertorneå has something to say about friendship – and making the most of borders. All friendships begin in the sauna, as we all know, and here’s plenty of it to go around. Try a traditional sauna, smoke sauna and why not a sauna raft along the Torne River? History, the nearness to Finland and the pure nature gives Övertorneå a special kind of character. www.pajalainswedishlapland.com The Arctic Circle is the outermost circle of latitude counted from the North Pole at which the sun does not set at the summer solstice. This phenomenon is called the midnight sun, the polar day or the polar summer. It is also the outermost line, counted from the North Pole that joins the points at which the sun does not rise above the horizon at the winter solstice. This phenomenon is called the polar night, midday darkness or midwinter dark. The polar day begins around March 21st, at the vernal equinox at culminates around June 21st. The polar night begins around September 23rd, at the autumnal equinox, and culminates around December 21st. Take a coffee break in the middle of the Arctic Circle in the Arctic Circle village Juoksengi. Visit the resting place with information and the Arctic Circle House Restaurant. You can also ask for the Arctic Circle Certificate at the Arctic Circle House. www.overtorneainswedishlapland.com ATTRACTIONS / OF INTEREST THE ARCTIC CIRCLE ATTRACTIONS / OF INTEREST VASIKKAVUOMA NATURE RESERVE Vasikkavuoma is one of Northern Europe’s largest haymaking bogs. The surface is approximately 250 hectares and in the old days there were about 350 barns. Currently there are 70 barns left. The open bog landscape provides a rich bird and plant life. In total there are 50 different plant species growing on the bog creating a “plant society” typical for a rich haymaking bog that is becoming increasingly rare. Among others there are several orchid species growing in the bog. In spring a large number of migrating birds come here to rest during their flight to their breeding grounds in the north. This charming little town, nestled in the woodlands by the Arctic Circle, has many stories to tell. Fishing stories, that is. Some of Sweden’s best fishing spots are to be found here along with beautiful scenery, mighty waterfalls, rapids, and a very charming city center. Bring your fishing rod – and camera, here’s a lot to catch your eye. LAESTADIUSPÖRTET – LAESTADIUS MUSEUM www.overkalixinswedishlapland.com Laestadiuspörtet is a museum where you can get a glimpse of how Lars Levi Laestadius everyday life looked like and how people lived north of the Arctic Circle in the mid 1800s. Laestadius was a Swedish Sámi pastor that founded the Laestadian pietist revival movement to help his largely Sámi congregations who were being ravaged by alcoholism. Laestadius’ movement eventually led to a revival in both in Northern Sweden, Finland, Norway and North America in the 1840s. Laestadius himself was a sobriety advocate as well as a botanist but he also devoted himself to things such as zoology, meteorology, linguistics and ethnology. Laestadiuspörtet actually consists of two different buildings. One part of the cabin was moved to Pajala from the former church site in Kengis in the 1850s. Laestadius lived there from 1849 until his death in 1861, only 61 years old. Today the museum boasts an exciting exhibition that reflects Laestadius personality and lifework, which left its mark on the entire Arctic region and elsewhere in the world. The museum is open during summer, there is also a café onsite. ATTRACTIONS / OF INTEREST ARCTIC MOOSE FARM Visit Jörgen Rokkas moose farm and get a memory for life. Here you will get the chance to see and pat tame moose. Guided tours may be booked in advance. The farm is situated about 20 kilometers north of Överkalix on road E10. LUPPIOBERGET – MOUNT LUPPIO Luppioberget is located 192 meters above sea level. The mountain’s special terrace formations have always surprised and inspired awe in those who see them. One could imagine that an architect had designed this granite mountain, but the truth is that it was the glaciers of the ice age that blessed it with all the ingredients for an adventurous excursion. The mountain’s caves add some truth to the legend that Luppioberget is Santa’s original residence. They also say that a mountain troll lives up there. In addition to this, the magnificent view and the chance to experience the midnight sun at summertime makes the mountain a given attraction for the entire family. The new restaurant Utblick opened in the summer of 2014 in a building designed by architect Mats Winsa. STRUVE GEODETIC ARC Astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve’s ideas about the earth’s shape and size resulted in a huge arc measurement expedition. The purpose was to prove that the earth is flattened at the poles. The expedition was named “The Struve Geodetic Arc” and is regarded as one of the most significant technical and scientific achievements of its day. The Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of survey triangulations that follow the 26-degree east longitude meridian, was measured from 1816 to 1855 and stretches 2,820 kilometers from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea. In 2005, the Struve Geodetic Arc was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The official geodetic arc consists of 34 measuring points. Four of them are in Sweden and one of them is on Mount Pullinki in Övertorneå municipality, Svanstein. The other three is in Tynnyrilaki in Kiruna, Jupukka in Pajala and Perävaara in Haparanda municipalities. CULTURE RESERVE HANHIVITTIKKO SUMMER PASTURE Hanhivittikko is the epitome of an idyll. Small red-painted chalets in a dazzling summer sanctuary. The glade is inviting and makes you want to stay a while to allow your eyes and spirit to experience the peacefulness. Today the Hanhivittikko Summer Pasture culture reserve is one of a kind. The meadowlands and pasture are among the most valuable in Lapland. There is a variety of species seldom seen in summer pastures, and among the plants there is a number of endangered species. Hanhivittikko Friends runs Hanhivittikko Summer Pasture and you could also meet a lot of animals here; mountain cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. The premier is always on the 8th of June. If you want more in-depth information you can pre-book a guided tour. BRÄNNABERGET – BRÄNNA MOUNTAIN VIEWPOINT Brännaberget is a local viewpoint, which offers a fantastic view. From here you can see the untouched Kalix River Basin and the town of Överkalix. During the summer when the midnight sun reflects on the river, it is an especially incredible sight. LOVIKKA MITTEN JOCKFALL The story of Erika Aittamaa reflects a bygone time when her children were growing in number and social services were poor. Knitting became a way to earn money. An order came in for really thick, durable mittens. Erika spun thick yarn and knitted two pairs of hefty mittens. The person placing the order was not pleased, maintaining that the wool had been destroyed. New attempts were made, and the wool was washed several times and carefully carded. The result turned out to be fantastic, and people soon began asking for the mittens. The year was 1892, and the classic Lovikka mitten had seen the light of day. You can see the world’s largest Lovikka mitten in the village of Lovikka in Pajala. Jockfall, one of the best fishing spots in Sweden is north of the Arctic Circle. Jockfallet, a waterfall by the rushing Kalix River is 9 meters high. In the salmon stairs you can watch the big playful salmon swimming upstream. Somewhere the big salmon is lurking, a 20-kilo challenge for the true fishing enthusiasts. TH LILLBERGETS STONE AGE VILLAGE Lillberget is a 6,000-year-old Stone Age settlement, the first of its kind discovered in Sweden. There have been many interesting findings at this site, for example the unique comb ceramic items that have not been found anywhere else in Sweden. Lillbergets Stone Age Village located near the center of Överkalix, is a recreation of how the original Lillberget settlement might have looked 6,000 years ago. The Lainio wilderness river is the best known, mainly because of its fantastic salmon fishing, but also for its trout and grayling. Downstream from the village of Lainio the river changes its character and forms a canyon with vertical cliffs on each side. Anglers can land from a boat in certain places and experience some exciting fishing for trout or grayling. This area also has the best salmon pools for both spinning and fly-fishing. The quality of the fishing can vary so it is advisable to check locally in advance. Naturally the exciting fishing in the forest and mountain lakes also attracts the keen angler. The archipelago is an exotic, low-lying archipelago in the northernmost reach of the Baltic Sea, near the border with Finland. The low and wind-whipped pine forest, sandy beaches, dunes and heaths give the park an unusual and interesting character. The archipelago islands, of which in Haparanda Sandskär is the largest, have been formed by the interaction of wind, waves and rising land mass. The Archipelago provides habitats for rare plants and insects, and a resting place for migrating birds. At Kumpula on Sandskär there are fishing sheds, information facilities and a harbor.
