ETELÄ-TAPIOLAN
LUKIO IB
Arvoisa opiskelija,
Olet valitsemassa itsellesi lukiopaikkaa seuraavaksi kolmeksi vuodeksi. Sinua kiinnostaa opiskelu
englanniksi hyvähenkisessä ja kansainvälisessä joukossa. Oman kulttuurisi ohella olet kiinnostunut
vieraista kulttuureista.

IB Programme
The hexagon depicted here shows the entire programme at a glance. Students select six subjects in all.
These subjects must include at least two languages, mathematics, an experimental science and a
humanities subject. Visual Arts is optional. In addition, IB students sign up for the core curriculum,
which includes three elements. The first is known as the Theory of Knowledge, concerned with how we
process knowledge about the world around us. The second is the CAS programme, which is short for
creativity, action and service, in which students challenge themselves in setting goals for personal
attainment. The third is the Extended Essay, a major piece of research in a subject of one’s choice. This
complete package, over two years, leads to award of the prestigious Diploma.
Etelä-Tapiolan lukio
Etelä-Tapiolan lukio is centrally located in light, open-plan and hi-tech premises in the WeeGee
building, a cultural complex, five minutes walk from the heart of Tapiola. A fifth of students are on the
IB programme, the rest are studying for the national matriculation examinations. The atmosphere
within the school is purposeful, hard-working and friendly. Lessons begin and end without bells.
Relationships are built on trust. Student tutors ensure that members of the new intake quickly find their
feet. During the course of the year social activities abound. Furthermore, students are consulted in all
matters of decision-making that affect the school. IB has its own representative on the Student Council.
An international outlook
Our school is proud of its bilingual tradition, with English medium instruction stretching back two
decades. Teachers come from England, the United States, India, Syria, and New Zealand as well as
Finland. Many of our students have resided for some months or even many years in different countries
around the world. We draw upon the varied life experiences and viewpoints in class and celebrate
diversity during the colourful activities of International Week, culminating in a fast-paced show. At the
same time, it should be stressed that an international background is not a precondition for entry. Far
from it: many students come to us from a purely Finnish background. The important thing is an openminded desire to participate in an international education and reap the rewards this brings.
Pre-DP
The IB programme is two years in duration. Finnish upper secondary school lasts for three years. Therefore, the first year of studies is used to build a firm foundation for subsequent study. In fact, this year is
pretty much identical to the national programme, with a wide range of subjects on offer and the
possibility to experiment with new languages, such as learning Chinese, for example.
One of the highlights of the pre-DP year is the “boot camp”, an overnight excursion to Nuuksio National
Park. Here students spend the night in tents and the days in hiking through the woods, playing games,
and getting to know one another better around the campfire. After the latest camp, one participant
wrote that she liked : “liked everything we did; it was a good chance to get to know people and a lot of
fun”. Another not-to-be missed occasion during the first weeks is “tutor evening”, run entirely by
students, and guaranteed to break the ice with new-found friends.
