BUCKS COUNTY ASSOCIATION FOR RETIRED AND SENIOR CITIZENS
2016 - The Year of the Volunteer
Hi Everyone! I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year!
Winter is setting in and the Center is nice and warm. I know the roads will be tricky from
time to time, but when it is safe to drive, and when you feel you can safely navigate the
roads, the Center is waiting for you. Many activities and classes still go on year-round.
Try to get into the Center and maybe try a new activity or class. I bet you have talents that
you may not even know you have. So try something new and amaze yourself!
On another item, the Center has a lot going on every day. There are many needs for volunteers to help with our Flea Market, to help direct visitors, to help at the front desk, and
many more opportunities. Please talk to me, Peggy, Buster, or Ted, to see how you can
help. Even if you can help just once or twice, we appreciate your efforts and time to make
our Center even better.
And I need to say this again, as it’s time to join or renew your membership. Please be
aware that this money is staying within the Center to support the daily operation of the
Center. Please join or renew your membership before April 30, to stay active and to take
advantage of membership pricing for classes in 2016.
I’d also like to tell you that we’re planning more Lunch and Learns, but we’re also bringing
in speakers from local historical societies and other organizations. I know that you cannot
all be here for these great sessions, so we may change a little, and hold a few sessions in
the morning. There will be some very interesting topics and speakers. Please see Page 4
for more details on the first few presentations.
Also, there will be more intergenerational activities with the Pennridge Central Middle
School students this year, including The Lion King play in March. Watch at the Center for
the date and when you can sign up for tickets.
I look forward to seeing you in 2016, and please bring a friend, neighbor, or relative to
show them our Center. Maybe they’ll even join the Center or have a need to rent the Legacy Room for an event. The more the merrier!

From Your President
Advisory Board
Dawn S. Baum
I hope you and your families enjoyed a memorable Holiday
Season! As we approach the New Year, we reflect on a very
successful 2015. Thank you to Debbie and Peggy for their
efforts not only in the special activities but also for their efforts
in the Center’s smooth daily operation. We appreciate the
efforts of our treasurer Susan Vasquez, who very efficiently
takes care of our funds. Thank you to the Executive and Advisory Boards for providing the necessary guidance which contributes to our success. A special thanks to the many volunteers for their time and efforts in our operation. It is amazing
what can be accomplished when we work together to provide
services and programs for the area residents.

We are looking forward to a great 2016. Both grants awarded
by the Department of Aging have been completed. Ted Heimbach and Dale Roades are continuing to provide tutoring and
software workshops to provide opportunities for developing
and refining technology skills. In addition to the computers
housed in the Computer Room, eight lap top computers and
four iPads are housed in a charging cart in the library and can
be used throughout the Center. Check them out!

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging also awarded us a
grant to remodel the patio with the installation of a new floor
and a roof. Architect Fred Diseroad and I supervised the project though its completion. The patio will provide a comfortable
usable outdoor space for both programs and leisure activities.
We are looking forward to scheduling activities when the
weather is appropriate.
Membership renewal time is here! Yearly membership in the
Center extends from January 1 to December 31. To help us
fund our many projects as well as the operation of the Center,
our yearly membership fee has been increased to $16.00. It is
still a bargain!

The start of another new year. A time for lots of adventures and fun. At the center we seek to give you a warm and joyful
place to visit, socialize, exercise, learn and enjoy. We also care about your safety. I strayed a bit from my usual kitchen
news in this newsletter. I wanted to give some information about winter safety. These are things we all know, but it
doesn’t hurt to be reminded of the extra cautions we must take as older adults.
Winter is a special time for celebration. It should also be a time for added caution if you or someone in your family is an
older adult. It is the season for falls, slips on icy streets and other dangers that can be especially harmful for older
adults.
"Before the cold weather arrives, it is important to prepare."
Injury While Shoveling Snow
When it’s cold, your heart works extra hard to keep you warm. Working hard, such as shoveling show, may
put too much strain on your heart, especially if you have heart disease. Shoveling can also be dangerous if
you have problems with balance, or “thin bones” (osteoporosis)
Ask Your Healthcare Provider If It's Safe for you to shovel snow or do other hard work in the cold.
Falls
It is easy to slip and fall in the winter, especially in icy and snowy conditions.
Carefully Shovel Steps & Walkways to your home or hire someone to shovel for you. Do not walk on icy or
snowy sidewalks; look for sidewalks that are dry and have been cleared.
Wear Boots with Non-skid Soles so you’re less likely to slip when you walk.
If You Use a Cane, Replace the Rubber Tip before it is Worn Smooth. You might also buy (at a medical
supply store) an ice pick-like attachment that fits onto the end of the cane to help keep you from slipping
when you walk.
Winter Driving: Because winter driving can be more hazardous you should:
Have your Car 'Winterized' before the bad weather hits. This means having the antifreeze, tires, and windshield wipers checked and changed if necessary.
Take a Cell Phone with you when driving in bad weather. Always let someone know where you’re going and
when you expect to arrive, so they can call for help if you’re late.
Do Not Drive on Icy Roads overpasses or bridges if possible; look for another route.
Stock your Car With Basic Emergency Supplies.
Enjoy the joys of Winter and have a great Martin Luther King Day, Valentine’s Day, and President’s Day!
Let’s hope Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow!

Do You ‘Just Belong’?
Are you an Active Member, the kind that
would be missed, or are you just content
that your name is on the list?
Do you do your job well and without a
kick, or do you leave the work to just a few
and talk about the clique?
Do you attend meetings and mingle with
the flock, or do you stay home and criticize and knock?
There’s quite a program scheduled that
I’m sure you’ve heard about and ‘twill be
appreciated too, it you will come and help.
Do you take an active part to help the
work along, or are you satisfied to be the
kind that ‘just belongs’?
Think this over, member, you know right
from wrong. Are you an active member,
or do you ‘just belong’?

Volunteering at the Center
Our Center is what it is, thanks to the volunteers. Every day
there are folks who volunteer their time and expertise
to make the Center one of the best around. Besides
being “just” a volunteer, you’ll get to meet and interact with
people that you may not have before. At times there
are events you can volunteer for, and you typically won’t
have to pay for that event.
Pocket Billiards Tournaments
Our pool players, i.e. billiards players, have tournaments
throughout the year, playing other Centers’ and retirement
homes’ pool players. If you’d like to come out and play and
compete, there is a spot for you, as there are no try-outs.
Contact Debbie or Peggy if you are interested.
Available volunteer positions are:
Receptionist (back-up only), Kitchen Help,
Flea Market Help, and Meals-on-Wheels Drivers
Our Library
Einstein Nutritional Program
Our friends at Einstein Nutrition Institute will once
again have their cooking demonstration and offer
great tips on nutritional eating.
Winter is coming! Visit your Center library for cozy
reading material. There’s no deadline for returning
items, so don’t worry about braving bad weather
The next 2 sessions are as follows:
Tuesday, January 26 and Tuesday, February 23.
Both demonstrations start at 12:30 pm.

CERAMICS RAFFLE UPDATE
Due to the overhead of the Center, the cost of most of
our activities has increased starting in February 1, 2016.
Those activities that were $1 will now be $2. As you
know, we tried not to increase costs for a few years,
but we find this is now necessary.
Thank you for understanding.
The Ceramics Raffle winners were drawn after the
Christmas Banquet on Dec. 16. The winners are:

delivered to the Center for your pick-up on February 25 at 10 am.
All proceeds will go into the General Budget. Thank you!
