His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche was born in 1965 in Taiwan to a Tibetan father and a
Mongolian princess from the royal house of Minh of the Torgut Tribe, a descendant of the famous
Mongol King, Genghis Khan.
At the age of seven, His Eminence was adopted by a Mongolian-Kalmyk foster family in the United
States and had his early education there. Upon consultation with his root guru H.H. Kyabje Zong
Rinpoche he entered the great Gaden Monastic University, South India at the age of 22 where he
studied Buddhist Philosophy. At Gaden, His Eminence was formally enthroned and recognised as
the incarnation of the 72nd Abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery, Ken Rinpoche Gedun Nyedrak,
and Kentrul Thubten Lamsang, a great Buddhist scholar and teacher.
Such reincarnations are called tulkus, which means someone whose rebirth is motivated by
compassion. These tulkus usually carry on the responsibilities of their previous life or lives, and
work to uphold the theoretical and experiential heritage of the Buddha.
Having arrived in Gaden, His Eminence had a strong wish to stay in retreat. However, he was
requested by his teachers to teach the Dharma instead. In 1992, a sudden influx of monks arriving
from Tibet led to a severe shortage of living quarters in the monastery. As a result, His Eminence
made his first trip to Malaysia, to fundraise for new living quarters. This trip proved to be very
successful, and His Eminence was very popular – after returning to Gaden, Malaysians regularly
visited him in the monastery, requesting that he return to Malaysia.
His Eminence did come back to Malaysia, where he now resides permanently. With much hard
work and the blessings of his teachers, Kechara House was established in 2000. Since then, it has
grown from one Kechara Paradise outlet and one prayer hall. Under His Eminence's guidance,
Kechara now has 13 departments and plans for much more, including a new gompa (prayer hall) in
the SunwayMas area that will accommodate 600 to 700 people. Renovations for this new gompa
began in June 2010.
His Eminence's plans for Kechara also includes Kechara World Peace Centre (KWPC) which, as a
place of alternative learning, will draw people from all over the world looking to gain inner and outer
peace. His Eminence often says that Malaysians have been so kind to him, and Malaysia is his
second home after Gaden Monastery. Wishing to repay this kindness, the legacy and benefit of
KWPC will be his way of giving back to the country.
