his seven-county region, named for the original Native American
Pee Dee Indians who inhabited it long ago and subsequently the
Pee Dee Rivers, still offers the natural wonders that attracted the
Native Americans and early settlers. A sparkling gem of nature’s best,
Pee Dee Country has a unique combination of scenic parks and natural
areas as well as a history spanning both Revolutionary and Civil War
times, reflected in its wonderfully preserved historic homes, plantations
and buildings.
Here’s the ideal place to experience the heritage of the agrarian lifestyle
of the old South and its relaxed way of life. Both cotton and tobacco
played an important role in the early growth of the region, and the South
Carolina Cotton Trail™ was developed to showcase the era. The Cotton
Trail takes visitors on a revealing tour through three Pee Dee counties,
and you’ll find Visitor Information Centers for the trail in Bennettsville,
Hartsville and Bishopville. The South Carolina Cotton Museum is located
in Bishopville and has preserved the legacy of the cotton culture in South
Carolina and a way of life long gone but still reflected in the present. The
South Carolina Tobacco Museum is located in the historic train depot in
Mullins and depicts farm life and the growing of the “golden leaf” prior to
1950. Many other Pee Dee towns boast fascinating museums displaying
local artifacts.
Pee Dee Country offers three beautiful state parks and natural areas
and many local parks as well as four scenic rivers. The area also has
more than 30 exciting and affordable golf courses! It’s no wonder that
outdoor activities are popular here! Come chip, putt, paddle, cycle, race,
raft, kayak, hike, fish and just have fun!
And while you’re here, enjoy the entertainment of one of our many local
festivals. Good food, good times and a glimpse of our history is found in
the Cotton Festival, the Tobacco Festival, the Sweet Potato Festival, the
Quilt Festival, the Barbeque Shag Festival, the Greek Festival, the Catfish
Festival, the Sankofa Festival and the International Festival, to name just
a few! Race car fans will want to catch a race at the famous Darlington
Raceway! Take in the history of the world’s greatest spectator sport at the
National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame and the Darlington
Raceway Stock Car Museum. Learn about the racing pioneers and the

o doubt Darlington County is best known as the home
of the Darlington Raceway, for years a major stop on the
NASCAR circuit and its oldest speedway. Now racing spills
over into related attractions such as the Darlington Raceway Stock
Car Museum and NMPA (National Motorsports Press Association)
Hall of Fame, both located on site. But Darlington County is also
a showcase for historical attractions related to the Old South and
its agrarian lifestyle. See restored historic sites, the South Carolina
Cotton Trail,™ Coker College and it’s famous Kalmia Gardens
and delight in the fun of a wonderful variety of festivals held here

This museum is housed in a restored post office built in 1930 and
provides a glimpse of the area’s past. It features the Lawhon History
Gallery, a unique silver collection and other interesting displays
of local history, including the first car in the state. The Sculpture

This c. 1820 house, now restored, served briefly as a headquarters
for General Sherman’s army during the War Between the States and

This is the oldest standing home in Hartsville. The town was named
after John Hart’s father, Thomas Edwards Hart. John Hart started the
first church, a carriage factory, a grist mill and other businesses.
The cottage is restored with period furnishings.

garden features exquisite
azaleas, dogwoods, camellias
and mountain laurel or Kalmia,
for which the garden is named.

is the best time to see the flowering delights but it’s an adventure at

This small city park features the hand prints in concrete of several

This charming village features antebellum buildings of the region’s
earliest settlers. The town was settled by Welsh Baptists and indigo was
the earliest money crop. Notable structures include the Old Society Hill
Library, Trinity Church, the Coker Rogers Store and the c.1869 railroad
depot. Self-guided tour maps are available at the Society Hill Town Hall at
280 S. Main St.

The South Carolina Cotton Trail™ is a scenic 90-mile driving tour
through the state’s “Land of Cotton” with easy access from I-20 and
I-95. It visits six historic towns, scenic fields, gardens and museums with
interpretive exhibits on how cotton shaped the area. Bishopville is the
southern-most stop on the trail, which also passes through Hartsville,
Darlington, Society Hill, Cheraw and Bennettsville, ending in Clio.

illon County is home to one of the most famous traveler
stops on I-95...South of the Border, the unique Mexican motif
mini-resort marked by its sombrero shaped watertower. But for
thousands, Dillon means “marriage” as the well-known Dillon Marriage Chapel performs over 7,000 a year. Dillon also has preserved
its past with a number of museums and structures listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. And, it is the home of the 835acre Little Pee Dee State Park, ideal for hiking,camping, picnicking
and fishing. The county is known for its fine golf courses and hunting
opportunities as well.

considered one of the best small town
museums in the state. It offers a
glimpse of life in Dillon County at the

The present day theatre had its grand opening in January, 1990. It is
one of the few remaining examples of Spanish Colonial architecture

The Dillon House, built in 1890, was moved to its present site in 1967
by the Dillon County Historical Society. It was the family home of J. W.
Dillon, the founder of Dillon County and at one time served as a boarding

Florence National Cemetery

1865 as a burial place for the Union soldiers that died while being held at
the Florence Stockade. The first woman to be buried in a National Cemetery, Florena Budwin, is interred at the Florence National Cemetery. The
cemetery contains the remains of veterans from all major US conflicts.
Florence Railroad Museum

Florence began as a railroad junction in the mid.1800s and was a major
rail center for the movement of men and military supplies during the Civil
War. This museum is housed in a renovated box car and caboose and is
filled with hundreds of artifacts and photos. Open June–Aug., Sat.–Sun.,

annual reenactment of the “Skirmish at Gable’s Hotel,” a local Civil War
battle, held the first weekend in March. The Columns is a private residence. Tours of the home, given by a guide in period dress, are scheduled

ee County reflects the impact that “King Cotton” has had on this area
for over two centuries. The South Carolina Cotton Trail™ begins in
Bishopville at the South Carolina Cotton Museum and winds its way
through Pee Dee Country past fields of snow white cotton bolls in the Fall.
In October, the county celebrates the cotton harvest with an annual Cotton
Festival. Historic architecture and unique gardens reflect the grandeur of
cotton’s glory days. From artesian wells and Arabian horses to an extraordinary topiary garden, the county has a variety of appealing places to visit.
Lee County is also home to several parks and the Lee State Natural Area
with 2,800 acres of pristine wetlands for outdoor activities.

will see his statue in downtown historic Marion. The city proudly
preserves its past and majestic moss-draped trees frame restored historic buildings and interesting museums reflecting life in a simpler time.
In Mullins, the South Carolina Tobacco Museum features exhibits of local
farm life before 1950 and celebrates the important role tobacco farming
played on the local economy and life. Today, the Golden Leaf Festival is
held in September. Marion County, bordered by the Pee Dee and Little
Pee Dee Rivers, has several outfitters offering river expeditions by canoe

arlboro County has always been one of the richest agricultural
counties in South Carolina and it is said that land sold by the
pound rather than the acre. It was once one of the state’s wealthiest counties, and those gracious days are preserved in Bennettsville’s
and surrounding town’s Victorian and Greek Revival homes. Bennettsville,
Clio and Blenheim are stops on the South Carolina Cotton Trail™ and
life during these grand times is reflected in historic districts and scenic
farmlands. The Blenheim Mineral Spring was discovered in 1781 and for
generations people came from nearby towns to drink the water.

Clio was founded in 1831, but its golden age came when cotton was king
at the turn of the 20th century. It was said that Clio had more millionaires
per capita than any other place in the country. Many of their mansions
remain here as well as store buildings and an old cotton oil mill. A guide

This house, built in 1826 on Darlington St. (now Main St.), was first
owned by H.H. Covington. It was sold in1871 to Duncan Donald McColl
(1842.1911), prominent Marlboro County lawyer and businessman. The
McColls lived in the house until 1884. The house was moved to S. Liberty
St., then McColl St. and finally to its present location by Hugh L. McColl,
Jr. It was donated to the county by McColl in 1991. Open by appointment.

W
illiamsburg County is situated at the southern tip of Pee Dee
Country and holds treasures of historical interests dating back to
the 1700s. Kingstree was settled in 1732 when Calvinists from
Ireland built clay shelters on the banks of the Black River at “the King’s
tree,” a tall white pine used as the mast for royal ships. The town now
offers some of the state’s most beautiful and historical buildings, including the Robert Mills courthouse and Thorntree, believed to be the oldest
house in the area. The history of the county covers both Revolutionary
and Civil War times and is reflected in preserved buildings and in the
County Museum. Traversed by the Black River, the county offers excellent
fishing and outdoor activities and the area’s natural beauty compliments
important remnants of history.

This home was built in 1749 by James Witherspoon and is believed to be
the oldest house in the Pee Dee area. The plantation home served as an
encampment for 100 British dragoons and a number of Tories. Open by
appointment through the Williamsburgh Historical Museum.

This 2725-acre preserve includes seven miles of river frontage and
provides habitat for four state threatened plant species. It is the home
of the Johannes Kolb Archaeological site, which has yielded early 18th

Situated on the river of the same name, this 668-acre, popular day-use
park features a river swamp with towering cypress trees as well as sandhills offering a wide variety of vegetation. Activities include river fishing,

splash pad, environmental discovery center and a 11,000 square foot
community building. Open daily, 9 am–sunset. Admission: Free.
