CHS RUGBY LEAGUE
Two extremely talented students from Great Lakes College competed in the CHS trial competition that took place
from the May 28 to June 1.
Max Buderus from Forster Campus
was selected in the Hunter team
and Kaiawha Walker from
Tuncurry Campus was selected in
the President’s team.
Both of the boys competed and
demonstrated exactly why they
were selected for the tournament;
both being involved in winning
sides throughout the competition.
Unfortunately
neither
was
selected for the State team, but
both boys should be congratulated
on a very impressive achievement
making it to the top 50 or so
players in the State.
Congratulations Max and Kaiawha!

Buckley Shield Rugby League Super 8’s Finals
On May 17, GLC under 14s rugby league team competed in the Buckley Shield finals against the region’s winning
sides from the Hunter area. GLC competed strongly against their first opponent, unfortunately going down to a
tough Callaghan College from Wallsend Campus. Kahn Ridgeway had an outstanding game, scoring two impressive
individual tries to put up a great fight.
The second game saw a rejuvenated attack from GLC where the boys got home in a nail biter. The opposition scored
on the siren with a kick to draw the game and send the match into extra time. With the boys behind the posts willing
the ball to miss, the kick was waved away to finish the score at 18 to 20.
A big thank you to all parents who transported the team, and a special thankyou to Vaughan Doherty for coaching
the team. Vaughan also coaches the under 14’s Forster Tuncurry Hawks and is seeking additional players, for anyone
interested in playing rugby league this season.
The boys will also be competing in the Knights Knockout and Country Cup Competitions on June 7, with a chance to
advance in further competitions.

Under 13 and 15 Knights Knockout and Country Cup Rugby League
Taree Recreation Grounds hosted the annual Manning Region under 13 and 15 boys combined Knights Knockout and
Country Cup Rugby League competitions. Teams from the Manning zone competed to advance through in both the
Knights Knockout and Country Cup competitions in a ‘winner takes all’ style competition. GLC dominated the
competition in both grades with comprehensive wins over Wingham and St Clares in both grades.
Both teams went through the competition undefeated, with only a single point being scored against them
throughout the entire competition, coming from an impressively struck field goal from the St Clares under 15s team.
Both the age groups will now advance to the finals in both competitions. The Country Cup finals will take place in
Port Macquarie on June 15 and the Knights Knockout finals on June 21.
From the outstanding performances also came the ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards, both of which were awarded
to players from Great Lakes College. In the under 13s, Hayden Dargen-Green won this award and in the under 15s
Jed Butterworth was awarded best on field. Both players were presented with a prize pack and bag and should be
congratulated for their effort and skill demonstrated throughout the competition.

P&C NEWS
Our latest meeting was well attended, especially as it coincided with Game 1 of the State of Origin.
After a recent request, and further fact finding, it was decided that the P&C will offer some financial support to the
Chill program offered at the senior campus. The program, overseen by GLECCA, provides a non-judgmental,
supportive environment, as well as the option of some food, to any student who wishes to avail themselves of the
service.
School principals discussed the changes in electronic access to the school, particularly with the introduction of
SENTRAL. This is essentially a student information database portal. Parents and carers can access this database to
determine absences from classes (and provide an online explanation if needed), as well as, accessing information
regarding timetables, monitoring reports and semester reports. Access to SENTRAL is free, and can be arranged
through the college.
The canteens continue to report a profit to date, and the P&C may be in a position to provide a donation to the
school in the next month or so. Ongoing support of the canteen allows the donations to be periodically managed.
Some recent concerns have been raised regarding price increases, and the P&C is planning to meet with both
canteen supervisors to discuss same.
Parental concern was also raised regarding the introduction of the widely reported “Safe Schools Program”. At
present, teacher training in the program is proceeding at Forster Campus, and the committee is planning to ask
Jennifer Miggins a bit more about the program and what it entails at the next scheduled meeting.
Our next meeting is planned for August 3 at the Forster Campus library. All the best for the upcoming holidays.

STEM Presentation Evening – WHAT A NIGHT!
What a night it was! 36 very proud parents and relatives attended the finale of the STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics) Project at Forster Campus.
Photos Left: Ryan Williamson, Finn Carroll & Oscar Muter with their
winning trophies.
Right: Brooke Horvath, Jade Cremin & Anabelle Adamsom constructing
their toothbrush powered rescue vehicle.
On the evening of Thursday June 2 , saw the culmination of months of planning and a term of intensive research,
thinking, collaboration, building, re-assessing, re-building and testing, to determine the best ‘rescue vehicle’ that
could be produced by the young 7 Athens budding engineers.
Science teacher, Liz Higgins and Mathematics teacher, Wendy Orman, worked together to prepare 9 groups of
students in 7 Athens at Forster Campus, with the skills necessary to collaborate and design a rescue vehicle with little
more than a tub of household items, including an electric toothbrush, bottle caps, cardboard and rubber bands.
During the evening parents were asked to complete the judging of the cars and determine the overall group winner
of the project.
After the dust settled and the judge’s scores were in, Group 8, consisting of Oscar Muter, Finn Carroll and Ryan
Williamson, had the highest tally and won the coveted ‘golden toothbrush’ award.
Parents on the night were delighted with how well the students worked in groups and how good it was to see a cross
curriculum program that really put subject matter into real life activities.
Teachers and students alike are keen to see STEM activities continue to be integrated into the school curriculum.

The Hurting Game
On Tuesday 31st May Brainstorm Productions presented their student wellbeing program ‘The Hurting Game’ for
Year 7 and 8 students.
The performance saw two actors reliving the highs and lows of
high school and growing up.
There were some powerful
messages
and
topics
depicted in the performance
including peer pressure,
building
relationships,
teenage insecurities, bullying
and mental health issues and
how caring for yourself and
others can positively impact
these issues.
The performance ended with
an opportunity for the
students to engage in a
question and answer session
with the performers about
particular aspects of the
performance relating to the
above mentioned topics and
messages.
The
Hurting
Game
performance aims to inspire
students to develop healthier
and happier relationships,
both online and in the real
world.

‘Mates Day’
The Forster Campus annual ‘Mates Day’ targets year 7 and year 10 boys working together to strengthen
relationships and understand what mateship is all about.
This year, we had a day of activities planned at Tuncurry Rockpool, however the recent extreme weather conditions
made several changes to the day’s planning, including the change of venue to Tuncurry Bowling Club.
We still managed to have a lot of fun activities both indoors and outdoors, even though we were relegated to the
local dog park, which turned out to be a beneficial site, as it was one of the driest spots in town.
One highlight for the day was an insightful seminar focusing on mental health in adolescent males, run by Registered
Nurse and Male Mental Health Specialist at Forster Tuncurry Community Health, Phil Long.
Other activities included an engineering challenge using basic items, some traditional Indigenous games and some
other physical activities games. One year 7 and 10 boys also went undefeated in the Tug-o-war competition,
including flogging the teachers.
Issue 4 – Term 2 – Week 8

A massive thank you goes to the local community groups who are more than willing to contribute to the day and to
the boys who actively participated in all the activities, making it an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Bake Sale
On Friday June 3 the SRC held a bake sale. Together, they baked and sold a range of cakes, cookies and slices which
saw them working as a team and encouraging the staff and students to support their school. The toffees were a
favourite and sold out fast. At the beginning of the year, the SRC chose a number of school based projects to
support, and all money raised will be used to further support these initiatives.

Girls’ Together Day
Our annual Girls’ Together Day took place at Club Forster on Monday 6th June with our Year 7 and 10 female
students attending.
We were supported on the day by staff from
Homebase Youth Service, The Youth Refuge, WEA
Coast, BreakThru People Solutions, Manning
Mental Health and Donna Rankin who all gave
their time to join us on the day and facilitate
workshops on resilience, positive self talk, body
image, conflict resolution, healthy relationships
and much more.
The girls were organised in groups of
approximately 30, selected by the Year Advisers.
They stayed with their group for the day,
providing the opportunity for meeting new
people and establishing new friendships.
The groups participated in five workshops during
the day with a surprise visit from Jaqui from the
SweatSHED who came in and lead the girls in
Zumba, which was enjoyed by all. The day ended
with the girls participating in some team work
activities led by the teachers before heading back
to school.

The girls College Tennis team made it through to the Hunter Semi Finals and the boys team was knocked out
in the Quarter Finals.
Year 7 had the opportunity to go to Inflatable World as part of the Year 7 Rewards Day. My scouts inform me
that all students had a great day and no one was more enthusiastic than Miss Buttsworth.
Due to the occurrence of students being distracted during class time and being a cause of bullying, harassment and
intimidation by other students using mobile phones, it has been decided by the Executive of Tuncurry Campus that
the following will occur:






At Tuncurry Campus, mobile phones and other electronic devices are not to be seen or used at school during
lessons.
If a staff member sees a mobile phone or electronic device during lessons, it is to be removed immediately.
The device is to be placed into an envelope labelled with the name of the student, name of teacher, the date
and time confiscated. The envelope is to be taken to the Deputy’s Office where it will be locked in the safe.
If it is a student’s first offence for the term they are to collect the phone at the end of the day.
A student’s second offence for the term will result in them receiving an ‘Official Warning of Suspension’ for
‘Continued Disobedience’ and lunch detention. A parent or carer is to collect the phone at their earliest
convenience.
A student’s third offence for the term will result in the student being suspended for Continued
Disobedience. The student will be banned from having a phone or electronic device at school for the period
of time they are on Deputy Mentoring.
The use of social networking sites including Facebook and the use of a mobile phone to bully, harass and intimidate
others during school time will result in the student having their phone banned from school immediately.
If you need to contact your child please contact the school on 65550500 and a message will be delivered to your
son/daughter.

These students performed in the Playbuilding and Unscripted (improvisation) sections against a multitude of district
schools.
Though the competition was tough, due to their talent and improvisation skill, these students not only achieved their
goal of a first place award, they achieved twice over, as well as a 3rd place.

Socceroos Experience RAP Reward
On Saturday, (yes a weekend) 4th June Tuncurry
campus took 40 students down to Sydney to
see the mighty Socceroos take on Greece.
These students were selected as part of the
RAP reward for their outstanding RAP scores
and were given the opportunity to participate
in a march on the field of ANZ Stadium along
with free tickets to the game.
The day started with a flurry of phone calls
from concerned parents to Mr Freeman about
the weather but after a phone call to ANZ
stadium the decision was made to take the
chance and go.
Issue 4 – Term 2 – Week 8
Page 17
The trip down was very uneventful and the weather seemed to be holding so, as we got closer, the students got
more excited.
Due to the threat of rain, we marshalled for the march inside the Olympic Swimming Centre, which gave some
students an opportunity to work on their ‘selfie’ skills. During the march, students got to see some of the players
from Greece and see what it is like to be on the pitch. The
seats were at the Greek end of the ground and their
supporters were loud and proud.
It took a cracking shot in the dying second to secure a
Socceroos win and the college were on their feet showing
their support. There were a few spits of rain but amazingly it
stayed away until we got back on the bus and finally the
heavens opened.
Another marathon drive back home through the pouring rain
with most of the students fast asleep. All the students had a
blast and their behaviour on the trip was outstanding.

Inflatable World
Friday June 4 wasn’t an ordinary day for Year 7!
As Mrs Lawton was going on maternity leave she
organised for us to go to Inflatable World.
It was a great day for Year 7 to Socialise and really
get to know each other.
When Year 7 arrived at Taree Inflatable World,
we were given a safety brief and then let loose.
After several hours of endless fun it was time to
go.
We went to Taree Service Centre to buy our lunch.
When we got back to school we said our goodbyes
and thanked the teachers for taking us.
It is agreed that it was a fantastic day had by all.
Luckily we went on Friday as Mrs Lawton went
into labour the next day.

Survivor Rock Climbing
Survivor is an amazing course offered by GLC Tuncurry. It is
based around surviving in, and enjoying the outdoors, with
many lifelong skills embedded within the course. Students
take part in hands on and outdoor activities from building
shelters, locating and sourcing water, starting fires,
orienteering and the list goes on. The course also contains
on site opportunities such as the Rock Climbing
Experience at the Centre of Gravity at Port Macquarie. The
students are instructed on safety and basics of rock climbing
before testing their skills and progressing through the
difficulty levels.
Survivor students are also currently planning for an
overnight camping, hiking and canoeing experience through
Booti Booti National Park which will take place in week 8.

Gamers Get Together
The library has been witness to some exciting student inspired learning lately. Year 12 students Lewis Yoole, Tom
Percy, Oliver Zarb and Brayden Poole are running a 6 week ‘learn to program’ unit of work with Tuncurry Campus
students during lunchtimes every Thursday. Around 20 students have been coming to the session for the last 4
weeks and learning how to create computer games.
Lewis approached the Teacher Librarians about his idea to teach gaming to the Tuncurry Campus students because
he learnt so much in Senior Campus that he wished he knew when he was younger. So far, Tuncurry Campus
students have been quietly absorbing every little detail that the older boys are able to pass on. It has been a huge
success and there are many games in creation. There have even been a few extra tutorials going on during the week!
Thank you to Lewis and the boys for their time and inspiration to the Tuncurry students.

Taree Future Options Expo 2016
The Taree Future Options Expo will be held at Chatham High School MPH on Friday 29 th July from 9 am – 12 noon.
The event is targeted at Year 12 students and coincides with the opening of university applications with the
Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).
The day is organised by a team of local Careers Advisers from the Taree and Great Lakes area and each year
approximately 1000 students from all of the region’s schools have the opportunity to attend free of charge. The
event is sponsored by the NSW Department of Education and Communities, and there is something there to interest
each student, regardless of their aspiration. Over 60 exhibitors will be in attendance on the day, including employer
groups, specialist trainers such as NSW Police and Defence, private colleges, TAFE, apprenticeship centres and
universities from NSW, ACT and QLD will be in attendance.
It is important that all Year 12 students in particular, make the most of this opportunity to research course options,
early entry schemes and employment prospects, as well as scholarship opportunities, on campus accommodation
options and financial assistance that may be available for study in the form of Youth Allowance from Centrelink.
Year 10 and 11 students and parents are also welcome and encouraged to attend! Decision making about the future
is best made as a family, and research and knowledge is the key to success. Further information about the expo will

be sent home with students early in Term 3. Any parent or caregiver who needs assistance in helping their child in
decision making and planning for the future should contact their school Careers Adviser and make an appointment
to discuss options, opportunities and strategies for success.
Year 11 RYDA Program 2016
Learning to drive is an exciting part of the lives of our senior students. This year, for the second time, local Rotary
clubs from Forster, Tuncurry and Taree
presented a federally funded driver
awareness program called RYDA to 174 Year
11 students on campus.
Students participated in sessions such as
learning to avoid hazards and distractions on
the road, rights and responsibilities and
listened to stories from crash survivors.
Students realised that there are reasons for
speed limits, what fines and demerits exist
and that stopping a car at speed is not as easy
as it seems and can take some distance.
The Rotary clubs provided lunch for all
student participants on the day and Quota
catered for the staff involved.
The Senior Campus provided the RYDA
program as part of the compulsory FOCUS
program that all Year 11 and 12 students
complete. The Rotary clubs are looking
forward to joining with the Senior Campus in
presenting this program to Year 11 students
again next year.
