s we move into May, many of our thoughts have started to drift towards the
summer and more specifically, the holiday season, as the thermostat gets turned
up about 20 degrees. So if the holiday bug is now coursing through your veins,
the real question of the moment is; where do you go?
Well, in this latest issue of CFL we take a look at some of the more convenient
countries to visit if you are planning on getting off island for a short break and with so
many fun and interesting places only a stone’s throw away from Cyprus, you really are
spoilt for choice. You can read our suggestions on page 29.
If you want to go a little further afield then turn to page 25 where we have the latest
installment from our roving travel reporter Simon Greswell, who, this month, finds
himself navigating his way around China.
However, any travel abroad comes with a few risks, whether it is sampling the local
food, drinking the water in India, or even braving the local market places in Egypt. If you
are travelling to some other countries however, the best thing you could hope for is a bit
of ‘Delhi Belly’, because murder, robbery, drugs and even piracy have become the norm.
But fear not, in order to help you avoid these troubles, on page 34 we have compiled a list
of the world’s most dangerous countries.
Staying with the travel theme, we have also put together a few useful tit-bits for when
you are visiting another country. These are facts that you may not necessarily find in the
local guide books but they could prove invaluable when you are sitting on a train in China,
or they may help explain the bizarre reaction from your new best friend in Argentina
when you decide to give him the ‘thumbs up’ signal.
Moving away from holidays, in the past few months, British Forces Cyprus and the
Sovereign Base Area Administration has welcomed its new Chief Officer, Jeremy Wright
and he was kind enough to sit down with us to give his first interview since arriving on
island. In a full and frank discussion, the Chief Officer explained a little more about his
role on island and outlined what the next six months could look like for the SBAs.
That should be enough to keep you entertained until your holiday begins.

Interesting events from BFC and around the world
Tackling the Ironman in Aid of ABF
Marathon Success
A well-known face in BFC sport, Emma Claydon is taking part in the
2010 Ironman event in France, on June 27, raising money for the Army
Benevolent Fund (The Soldier’s Charity). Tackling a 3.8km sea swim,
followed by a 180km bike ride then a full marathon run, Emma must
finish the gruelling challenge within 16 hours and aims to beat her
2009 time of 12 hours and five minutes! Show your support and help

More than 36,000 people took to the streets of London in April for the
world-famous London Marathon. Once again, we were really impressed
by former Army Major Phil Packer; since sustaining a spinal cord injury
on operational duty in 2008, he has devoted his life to helping others.
He raised over £700,000 completing the 2009 London Marathon in a
gruelling two weeks on crutches and this year, he walked it in just under
26 hours, smashing his record by 13 days. He dedicated this year’s
inspirational effort to 26 charities, joined on each mile by a nominated

Arsenal Soccer School
SBA Police March 10k for Charity
The Arsenal Soccer School visited Bases across the island last month
as part of the British Forces Youth Services Easter activity week. Six
coaches from the school taught BFC youngsters the basic skills of
passing and heading, dribbling with the ball and shooting, ending with
a friendly game to consolidate what they had learnt. A huge global
organisation, Arsenal Soccer Schools have been operating since 1985
around the UK and there are now projects set up in over 22 countries.
With the World Cup in South Africa only weeks away, it was the perfect
time to get kids excited about the sport.
SBA police officers from Dhekelia Station, including ESBA Chief
Inspector Andreas Pitsillides, joined members of the local communities
of Akhna Forest, Xylotymbou, Ormidhia and Xylophagou on the 35th
Christodoula March last month, marching over 10km to help raise
awareness and money for the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society. The event
began at Akhna Forest, with the local village band leading the marchers
to Xylotymbou. Here they were met by the local community music
band, who kept everyone going for the final 6km to Ormidhia. Well
done to everyone involved in raising money for a worthy cause.

Disposal Of SFA Garden Waste and Large Rubbish Items
Occupants are reminded that it is your responsibility to maintain and
keep gardens tidy. This includes hedges cut to 1.8m (6 ft) high and cut
back from paths to allow access. Open plan front gardens are to be kept
clear of weeds and self-rooting plants are to be removed.
You must also correctly bag up garden waste to appropriate
standards for collection by the bin men. Large garden waste and other
disposable items left outside gardens not only cause a nuisance to
pedestrians, but may be a health and safety issue and make the estate
look untidy. This is a common occurrence and is to cease immediately.
Skips are available off Lightning Lane for the correct disposal of
unwanted waste and personal effects.
Fly-tipping garden waste into the Fire Brakes is prohibited - not
only is it dangerous in helping to spread fire, it also provides rats
with cover and nesting material which encourages snakes to the area.
Housing Office staff will issue warning letters to offenders ignoring
this requirement and should any waste have to be removed at public
expense then charges will be incurred. The HCSO has contact details of
local gardeners.

Privately Owned Swimming Pools in Gardens.
It is that time of year again, when you might be considering putting
up a temporary swimming pool in your garden. Before rushing out and
erecting a pool, please take some time out to consider: do I really want
this pool in my garden when I can use the station swimming pool or the
beach areas, how will I supervise the pool at all times, can I maintain
the water safety, do I need to erect child-proof fencing around the pool
and do I need public liability insurance? If you decide to own a pool
you must register it with the HCSO. Under no circumstances are you to
use to domestic water supplies, via a hose pipe, to fill swimming pools.
Pools must be filled by a water supply contractor and a copy of the
receipt handed in to the HCSO to be kept on file as proof of payment.
Failure to provide a receipt from a contractor when requested to do
so could result in disciplinary action against offenders. To conserve
purchased water, owners are encouraged to install filters and use a
cover when the pool is not in use. The HCSO Office has contact details
of local water suppliers.
SFA Parking
The issue of inconsiderate
parking within Service Families
Accommodation (SFA) was raised
at a recent meeting of the Akrotiri
Road Reps. Please be advised that
Station Standing Orders state
vehicles are not to be parked on
Inconsiderate & Dangerous Parking pavements or on one-way roads,
or wherever parking restrictions
are in force. Inconsiderate parking can cause a major inconvenience
and danger to pedestrians, particularly those with buggies, prams and
young children and may reduce access for emergency vehicles.
Slimming Clinics And Slimming Drugs
Personnel are advised that medication provided by Cypriot slimming
clinics may not be legally available in the UK. These clinics have not
been vetted in any way by BFC medical staff and their use is not
recommended. Dietary advice is available from your medical centre,
and a dietician has been recruited by SSAFA who will be enhancing
support to weight-loss programmes. Some of the drugs used by Cypriot
clinics are amphetamine based and could have serious adverse sideeffects. Service personnel taking such preparations are likely to fail a
random drugs test, which could have far reaching consequences. If in
doubt, discuss with your medical officer.

The All Island Charity Raft Race & Annual Dhekelia Sea Swim
It doesn’t seem a year ago that the sea at CESSAC was covered with
raft like contraptions, some resembling sea vessels and some not,
some managing to make it around the course and some not. If your
raft didn’t make it around the course then now is your chance to make
amends. Dig out the wood, cardboard, barrels, glue, sticky back plastic
and start building yourself a raft! The All Island Charity Raft Race will
be held at CESSAC Beach, Dhekelia on Saturday, May 22 starting with
the judging at 10.15am, followed by the first race at 11am.
A full running commentary will be given, keeping spectators up-todate with the day’s races, and a number of stalls and side shows will
offer retail opportunities. Entry to the race will cost €60 per team.
Rafts are to be crewed by four people and with the focus being fun,
then fancy dress is a must! The race promises to be a fun-filled day of
entertainment, amusement and competition, with all profits going to
charity. Continuing with the nautical theme, the Shipwreck Night fancy
dress party will take place in the Zulu Warrior club from 7.30pm.

The Shack is a drop-in centre for children aged between 12-18 years

Dogs
All dogs need registering with the HCSO. Please note, when you take
on a new dog, in order to take it back to the UK it needs to have rabies
jabs. All dogs undergoing this procedure are not allowed to enter the UK
for six months after their first jab.

UNPA Fun for the Kids
T
he UNPA library laid on its annual easter egg hunt in March,
much to the delight of the younger members of the
community, who were very excited at the
thought of lots of chocolate to eat.
There were plenty of activities for the children
to get involved in, the main event being the egg
hunt. The children searched feverishly for eggs,
attempting to find them all as quickly as possible
before the warm weather melted the chocolate. The
winner, Connor Bailey found a grand total of 20 eggs
and was rewarded for his efforts with the prize of a
chocolate rabbit.
The ‘Pin the Tail on the Rabbit’ competition was won
by Merryn Alderson and Tamara Hubbuck was awarded
first prize for her beautiful colouring.

SBA Police

O
nce again the SBA Police had a busy month, with three
major operational cases alongside the continuing effort
to improve driver behaviour around the SBAs. Officers
arrested a local on suspicion of possessing explosives,
as part of a wider investigation into conspiracy to commit murder.
Military dog handlers helped in the search of a second suspect’s
house and, following arrest, the two prisoners - along with all seized
exhibits - were handed over to CyPol officers from CID HQ for further
investigation. Within the same week, a fatal traffic collision took place
on the Dhekelia-Protaras highway, involving a motorcycle driven by
a Latvian male with a Latvian female pillion rider, who suffered fatal
chest injuries. SBA Police conducted vehicle and scene examinations
and the case is currently under investigation. Later in the month, a
Romanian male and female made accusations of theft and rape against
a Turkish-Cypriot which, after detailed investigation, were admitted
to be false. Both suspects were brought before the SBA Court and
sentenced to six months imprisonment for public mischief. Throughout
the month, SBA Police also arrested 11 people for drinking and driving,
164 drivers were given a written caution for minor traffic offences and
a further 146 drivers were issued fixed penalties for speeding, use of
phones whilst driving, and not wearing seatbelts or crash helmets.

Fire Safety – Your escape plan
If your smoke alarm went off in the night, would you know what to do? This article explains how to
make a ‘fire action plan’ for your home. It’s better for you to prevent fire than to fight it. Tackling fire
is a job best left to professional firefighters. Make your plan. Get out alive.
PLAN AHEAD TOGETHER!
• Make your ‘fire action plan’ with everyone in your home, especially
children, the elderly and disabled.
• This involves making sure everyone who lives or visits your home
knows what to do if there is a fire. By following the advice in this
article and planning your escape route together, you can save lives.
• Make sure everyone knows where to find door and window keys.
• The best escape route is your normal way in and out of your home
so keep it clear. Think of difficulties you may have getting out, for
example in the middle of the night.
• Choose a second escape route, in case the first one is blocked.
• If you can’t escape, you will need to find a room to wait in until
the Fire and Rescue Service arrive. Choose a safe room, ideally one
with a phone and a window that opens. A safe room is particularly
important if you have difficulty moving around.

• Don’t go back in for anything, even if there’s someone left inside.
• Wait for the Fire and Rescue Service and give them as much
information as possible.
PRACTISE YOUR FIRE ACTION PLAN
• Regularly take a few minutes to ‘walk’ the escape route with
everyone in your household and check that everyone can unlock
and open doors and windows easily.
• Review your plan regularly, especially if you make any changes in
your home.
