Annual Report 2007-2008 Today & Tomorrow. Letter to Stakeholders, As we look back on the last few years at Womansplace, we reflect with gratitude and pride on all the amazing accomplishments we have made. None of this would have been possible without the loyal efforts of you, our supporters, volunteers, board members and compassionate staff who recognize that the impact of the direct services we provide can be the difference between life and death for victims of domestic violence. Year after year, thousands of victims and their families are given hope at Womansplace and are able to change the course of their lives, break the cycle of violence and begin again. Laurie MacDonald Mission At Womansplace our vision is to end domestic violence through crisis intervention, prevention education and direct services. Our mission is to support individuals and families exposed to relationship abuse by providing shelter, legal and medical advocacy and options counseling. Womansplace Womansplace Board of Directors Mrs. Katherine M. Rost, Board President Mrs. Patricia L. McGrail, Esq., Vice President Mrs. Judy Murtha, Treasurer Mr. Ted Kantner, Secretary Mrs. Barbara Bradley Asst. Chief Maurita Bryant Mrs. Doris Gaudy, RN MS CNAA BC Mrs. Christine Hammond Mrs. Alice Jones Dr. Rani Kumar, MD Mr. Gerald LaFrankie Mrs. Michele Matuch Chief Robert McNeilly Ms. Beth Scagline Mills, Esq. MDJ Mr. Eugene Riazzi, MDJ seeks to increase victim safety and empower these individuals to begin again. Because of the dedication of our volunteers, board members, donors and foundation support, Womansplace has evolved into a full service agency that is now able to provide a complete continuum of care for women and their children whose lives have been shattered by domestic violence. Providing high quality services such as shelter, options counseling, employment training, transitional housing, children’s advocacy and legal advocacy has earned Womansplace recognition as a finalist in this year’s Forbes Funds Alfred E. Wishart Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management and was identified as a leader in the category of Quality and Consistency of Services. At Womansplace, we recognize that the needs of those we serve are many and varied. In an effort to expand our service provision we have looked to partnering with other community agencies to provide drug and alcohol counseling through the McKeesport Healthier Communities PartnerSHIP, Auberle and Mon Yough Community Services. We have created employment opportunities for our clients by joining with Bethlehem Haven’s Project Employ and greater access to the courts with the support of Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala and our Emergency Protection From Abuse electronic court order system in UPMC McKeesport, UPMC Braddock and Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Womansplace has also developed social entrepreneur opportunities in opening Pat’s Boutique in memory of our kind supporter, the late Patricia J. Mansfield. The boutique offers free clothing for those we serve and low cost, gently used clothing to the community. At the same time, Pat’s Boutique also provides job training opportunities for our clients. Looking forward, Womansplace recognizes the need to not only support those who have found themselves victims of domestic violence, but to dedicate genuine efforts to stop domestic violence in our communities. To that end, we are proud to have developed a new partnership with the Consortium for Public Education and bring Expect Respect, a teen dating violence program to six of our local school districts. Expect Respect brings awareness, prevention education and counseling to our students. If we are serious about ending domestic violence; what better place to start? We deeply appreciate your support of Womansplace over the years. Collaboration and partnership have proven to be our keys to success and are proud and grateful to call all of you our friends and partners. We thank you for your support of our mission and look forward to continuing to provide quality programs and services that improve the quality of life for those whose lives have been shattered by domestic violence. With gratitude, Laurie MacDonald, Executive Director WOMANSPLACE • 2007-2008 ANNUAL REPORT 01 Charity Golf Outing In the Community Left photo: D.A. Stephen Zappaa, Art Keenan, McKeesport Chief of Police Joe Pero, McKeesport Mayor James Brewster Right photo: CP Industries & The Consortium for Public Education Expect Respect Recognizing the need to address a disturbing increase in the number of teen dating violence incidents in our communities, Womansplace and The Consortium for Public Education have partnered to bring Expect Respect, a teen dating violence prevention program to six Allegheny County school districts. Expect Respect was developed in Austin, Texas and was selected by Womansplace and the Consortium because of its many years of successful implementation in Texas. The program was selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for evaluation, technical assistance and program development. The objective of Expect Respect is to changes the culture of our high schools and end the cycle of domestic violence by teaching young people how to develop respectful, healthy relationships. Faculty members from each school district attend trainings conducted by Womansplace and the Consortium for Public Education on how to recognize the warning signs of teen dating violence and how it affects student achievement. The Expect Respect program provides classroom discussion on dating violence and in-school counseling and support groups for teens affected by dating violence. Student leadership projects, designed by and for students, will be presented during National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week, the first week of February. These peer led projects seek to raise awareness of dating violence and provide opportunities to empower students to create change in their own schools. “I am pleased to team with Womansplace and The Consortium to develop legislation that aims to protect our young people from dating violence.” - Senator Logan At Gateway High School, Senator Sean Logan will speak to students about this issue and how it affects our community on February 6th as a part of this awareness week. Senator Logan has been instrumental in getting the Expect Respect program started and will be working with Womansplace and The Consortium for Public Education to draft legislation that will require school districts to adopt policies to address dating violence in schools. Students who feel safe and are emotionally healthy are better able to meet their academic challenges and become healthy, successful adults. Students are responding well to the classroom discussions and are excited to have an opportunity to talk openly and safely about healthy dating relationships. Last year, Womansplace celebrated the 15th Anniversary of our Golf Event. Youghiogheny Country Club was transformed into a tropical island getaway with Cheeseburgers in Paradise and Bahama Mama Par 3 Tiki bars. The two day event also included the Margaritaville Island Party featuring “The Buffettman” Tom Watt. Despite the rain day delay, the entire event was a huge success bringing over 150 golfers and 200 Parrotheads together to support Womansplace. Each year, we try and raise the bar above the typical golf outing and give our supporters an event to remember and one that shows our appreciation for their continued dedication and support of our cause. Your generosity has and will continue to brighten the lives of thousands of victims of domestic and give them hope to begin again. On a personal note, it has been an honor to work side by side with our Golf Committee Chairperson, Ted Kantner, the entire committee and the dedicated group of volunteers who are so committed to creating an excellent event each year. It has also been a privilege to have had the opportunity to be among so many thoughtful and caring people who take time out of their busy lives to raise these much needed funds for Womansplace. Thank you for your past support. We’ll look forward to seeing you again this year! WILLIAM ROST EDWARD & JOAN ROTHERAM 08 WOMANSPLACE • 2007-2008 ANNUAL REPORT 09 Making a Difference Our Reach Personal Expression “ She would remind herself that there was a light at the end of every tunnel and she was working towards that end. “Nobody really knew, not even my parents, until it was over. The best help I got was from several phone calls to Womansplace. I never had to stay there, I had a choice. Without their support, I wouldn’t have had the knowledge, or courage to do what I did.” – Karen The cover of this annual report is a cathartic painting by Karen Krass. Karen escaped a life of fear and rebuilt one free from violence, keeping herself and her children safe. A victim of domestic violence, Karen used paint and canvas trying to release the anger she felt being in an unhealthy relationship. This painting helped to put her on a path where light shines bright and darkness is far behind. We thank Karen for sharing this personal work of art with us and we salute her for her strength and courage. In 1989, Karen knew that she had to leave a bad relationship that was getting progressively worse. “I finally realized there was a pattern,” said Karen. She was terrified for her children who were starting to react to the situation. During Halloween, her son asked if he could wear some of his dad’s clothes so that he could dress up as a “mean old man”. Karen then realized that if she stayed, her children would suffer the consequences. Karen’s painting helped her release her anger, some of which was directed at her self. Like so many victims, she blamed herself. At the same time, she would remind herself that there was a light at the end of every tunnel and she was working towards that end. After several calls to Womansplace counselors who offered support and information, Karen learned how to keep herself and her children safe. She found strength and courage, and worked with the legal system to file a Protection From Abuse Order against her abuser. 10 It never ceases to amaze me - how much they’ve changed my life, how much they’ve changed my children’s lives.” Year in Review Today, Karen lives in a home that she purchased on her own and works full time at UPMC. However, her memory is still stained and she still flinches at flashbacks of objects being thrown at her. She finds peace in knowing that she did the right thing for herself and her children. Sheer determination keeps her going and striving to be self-sufficient; never having to depend on another person. “I will never have anyone tell me what to do/how to act/how to dress, etc. again”. Today, she is her own person. For Karen, and for many other victims living in fear, leaving a domestic violence situation is not an easy decision but a decision that could determine life or death for themselves and their children. Karen’s advice to others: “The violence will escalate, and each time the damage to yourself, your children, your home, becomes harder to repair. Don’t wait – get out the first chance you get.” Every situation is different and there is no blanket plan that everyone can follow. It 1,914 calls were made to our Womansplace emergency 24 hour hotline is important for a victim to do what’s best for them. There is help – you don’t have to be alone! Domestic violence occurs regardless of race, age, ethnicity, mental or physical ability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and religious background. Domestic violence occurs within a family or intimate relationship as a way to control another person. Victims suffer physical injury, live in fear in their homes, and lose power over their lives. 3,498 victims received emergency shelter, counseling or legal advocacy *200 Peggy (survivor) and Womansplace Counselor Advocate II, Kathy Birchall. victims filed Emergency Protection from Abuse (EPFA) Orders within their local hospitals. 283 children accompanied those individuals and were referred to Womansplace Children’s Advocacy Department. 16,686 individuals were reached through our Prevention Education and Community Outreach department. These efforts include programs to various community groups and educational institutes. 3,010 Senior Citizens were reached through our Elder Abuse Program. 1,028 Volunteer hours were dedicated to Womansplace programs and services 3,769 contacts were made in support of Systems Change/Advocacy * Victims of domestic violence are able to go to UPMC McKeesport, UPMC Braddock and Jefferson Regional Hospitals in lieu of Pittsburgh night court to file an EPFA.
