Career Exploration programs allow children to explore future careers and prepare for the 21stcentury workplace. Welcome to the fun! STEM Camps: Delaware Tech is a proud supporter of Governor Markell’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative to ensure Delaware’s future workforce is ready to succeed. Camp Programs represent one of the fastest growing initiatives at the Terry Campus. Our camps allow children to explore a variety of enrichment activities throughout the summer while experiencing the college environment. Each program has been designed to be educational and entertaining and is staffed by experienced educators and camp counselors. Sport Camps: These sessions provide campers with a fun-packed, enjoyable time in an environment where they can not only develop a wider range of sporting skills, but also develop teamwork and interpersonal skills simultaneously. Dress Code: comfortable clothing and sneakers. Specialty Camps: The size of each camp is limited and openings are filled on a first-come, firstserved basis. Workforce Development and Community Education 100 Campus Drive Dover, DE 19904 2 Camp information number: 302.857.1400 In support of Governor Markell’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative, Delaware Technical Community College will offer 44 youth camps this summer at campuses statewide expected to serve 990 students. The Delaware STEM Council was formed in 2010 to ensure Delaware’s children graduate more ready to succeed in the high-wage jobs of tomorrow. The youth camps are designed to make learning fun and exciting and to encourage students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The College is involved in a number of efforts to improve STEM education through academic programs and connected degree agreements with the University of Delaware and Delaware State University. A strong STEM workforce helps Delaware employers continue to be national leaders in the innovation economy, seek out employees who can strengthen their research and development, make their workplaces more efficient, and ensure their business practices are more environmentally sensitive. All forms are available online: go.dtcc.edu/TerryCamps FAQs Registration Steps Checklist: Will my child go on a field trip? Some camps include field trips and are detailed in the camp descriptions. When should I register for camp? Registration begins Feb 1st with final payment required by 4:30 pm 10 days prior to each week’s camp start date. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Do I need to make a deposit to register? Yes, a non-refundable deposit of $25 per child, per week is due with your application. Pre-registration is required. The $25 is applied to your balance. Will meals be provided? Yes. Delaware Tech will be participating in the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Lunch will be provided for all campers. Vending machine purchases will not be allowed. Nor will students be allowed to eat or drink in the classrooms. Our cafeteria and outside patio will be the only locations where food is permitted. Are camp scholarships available? Scholarships are available for the 2016 Summer Camps with an approved application. Please call (302) 857-1400 for information and availability. Does the camp program offer extended camp? Yes, the extended camp program begins at 7:30 am and ends at 5:30 pm. The fee is $30 per week. Campus closes at 5 pm on Friday. Will I be able to bring my own equipment? The camp will provide all the equipment you will need unless specified. Please do not bring your personal equipment, electronic devices or cell phones to camp. How should I dress for camp? Come dressed to participate in athletic and artistic activities. Wear sneakers, not flip-flops. Who works on the camp staff? Our staff is comprised of teachers, counselors and college students from the local area. What is the counselor/camper ratio? We follow State guidelines for counselor/camper ratio. Therefore, 9- to 12-year-olds will have a 1:10 ratio; 7- to 8-year-olds will have a 1:9 ratio; and 5- to 6-year-olds will have a 1:5 ratio. What if the camp I want is full? Your name will be placed on our waiting list. You will be notified no later than the Thursday before the camp begins if a spot becomes available. What if my camp is canceled? If enrollment is below the minimum, specialty camps will be canceled. However, your child will offered to be enrolled in an alternate camp. ❑ 1. Shoebox Science ENU 120 603 Skill-building games and activities help kids practice and master concepts related to key science topics: the five senses, animal babies, Skillbuilding games and activities help kids practice skills and learn must-know math concepts. Meets Common Core State Standards for life cycles, seeds and plants, light and color, health and safety, sound, and more. Correlated to district, state, and national science standards. Are you looking to strengthen or advance your math skills? Do you want to have fun this summer but still be prepared for school next year? Then Cool Math4Kids is the right camp for you! Cool Math4Kids is an interactive math site that provides students with activities and online math games to enhance their math skills while playing games. Kids won’t even know they are doing math! LEGO YOUniverse: Make Your Own Adventure ENU 092 603 In this LEGO adventure YOU are the star! Pick your favorite LEGO genre or create an alternate universe to create a digital illustrated story. Whether you want to fight alongside Batman, be part of a Ninjago clan, hang with Ninja Turtles, or go into space with the Bionicles, the only requirement is that you put yourself in the story! All students will end the class with a digital comic book that can be shared with friends and family on a password protected website! Students will work in teams for most of the program. Afternoon Camps Camp 911 ENU 049 613 This camp explores a variety of rewarding careers that protect society, including law enforcement, the courts, corrections, and counseling services. Games and activities will encourage participants to sharpen their problem solving skills and arrive at creative solutions using different scenarios. Around The World ENU 006 613 When you enter the room for this class you’ll feel like you have traveled to another country. Each day you’ll explore a different country to learn about various cultures, traditions, and customs. This camp includes games and crafts that are related to the country or region being explored. Morning Camps Artful Antics June 27-July 1 WEEK 3 ENU 048 603 For those young people who enjoy creative projects, the field of visual communications incorporates business, graphic design and multimedia concepts. Learn to apply your own creativity to develop a concept and design a platform that informs others about your project. Be A Tourist In Your Own Town ENU 126 603 This camp invites you to experience your state as others see it. Grow your knowledge and appreciation of where we live. Delaware is rich in history, gorgeous in landscape! Within our state are miles of pristine beaches, art museums and galleries, grand mansions, lush gardens, and wildlife refuges alive with birds and beauty. Learn dance techniques, play games and make fun crafts. Please wear leotards, tights, ballet slippers and either a ballet skirt or shorts with elastic waist bands. Hair should be pulled away from face. Dress Code: comfortable clothing and sneakers. Coding for Kids I ENU 085 613 Computer Science is currently one of the fastest growing industries. This program will introduce kids to the basics of computer coding. Through hands-on and computer activities students will learn vocabulary, build background, and begin to write lines of programming code! Morning Camps Bubble Bonanza July 5-July 8 WEEK 4 ENU 125 603 Jacob and India are in California, and they get to help create a stage show about bubbles for an amusement park! Kids will explore how bubbles behave and investigate the properties of different materials as they engineer all kinds of bubble wands. The unit wraps up with a Bubble Bonanza Showcase where kids demonstrate their creations. Hip Hop Fitness ENU 089 603 This exciting class incorporates hip-hop music and dancing with aerobic fitness. Learn fitness and Hip-Hop dance moves during a fun-filled motivating work-out! This class also helps kids get healthy by boosting their metabolism and increasing energy levels. Get their hearts pumping! Intended to improve overall physical fitness and stamina and endurance while having fun. Dress Code: comfortable clothing and sneakers. Afternoon Camps Mind Your Own Business ENU 055 613 Explore career options in the business world. This camp is for young people who are interested in activities that cover a broad range of subjects such as accounting, sales, management, finance, and marketing. This camp’s activities will focus on the compassion, understanding and counseling necessary to help others who are in need. Participants explore ways to overcome obstacles that may face them, their loved ones, or society in general. Cheerleading ENU 012 603 Cheer for your favorite team! Come and join our cheerleading camp. No experience is necessary just bring your smile with you. Camp is for both male and female campers. Dress Code: comfortable clothing and sneakers. Afternoon Camps Household Science ENU 147 613 This new camp brings together creativity and scientific experimentation for a fun, engaging experience. Campers will take household materials they use and see every day and turn them into safe, fun science experiments. Minecraft Animators ENU 146 613 Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Morning Camps Green Buddies July 18 -July 22 WEEK 6 ENU 024 603 Green jobs working in fields such as energy efficiency -- and renewable energy-related fields, such as solar and fuel cells, atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climatology, and more -- will be explored using engaging activities to encourage our future green engineers, manufacturers, roofers, plumbers and others. His books will be explored in fun and innovative ways. Each day of the week will have a different topic and a way to celebrate the life and workings of this imaginative writer! Rainforest Adventure ENU 139 613 Rainforest Adventure will focus on endangered animals in the rain forest. Students will complete crafts as well as building their own rainforest out of shoeboxes at the end of the week. There may also be some special animal guests! Morning Camps Hop To It July 25 - July 29 WEEK ENU 148 603 7 Oh no! India and Jacob accidentally brought a cane toad from Australia to New Zealand. Cane toads are pests. They’re an invasive species that hurts native species in Australia—and they could do the same in New Zealand. Kids will help India and Jacob engineer a humane trap to catch the toad. Kids love to eat, and if they learn how to cook, they can eat healthier. They may also want to consider joining the fast-growing food service industry, where they can obtain a respected position in a career field where their cooking skills are in high demand. Morning Camps August 8 - August 12 WEEK Delaware Tech All Stars 9 ENU 127 603 Delaware Tech All Stars will use their energy and enthusiasm for games geared to a variety of age groups and interests. Playing sports encourages behaviors and skills that will lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle. Careers in athletic-related fields are plentiful because the sports industry is nationwide, so campers may consider a sports-related career. Dress Code: comfortable clothing and sneakers. Catching the Wind ENU 091 603 Think like mechanical engineers as you use your knowledge of wind to design and create machines that can be used to capture energy. Students will look critically at several common machines (mechanical pencils, egg beaters, rolling pins) and diagram how the parts of the machine interact with each other and allow the object to function. Students will then use their mechanical engineering skills to explore different materials and shapes conducive to catching the wind, first by designing sails for small boats and finally for designing windmill blades. At the end of the program, every student will have a finished LEGO Video Game that can be shared with friends and family through a password protected Black Rocket website. Games are only compatible on PC computers. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Morning Camps August 15 - August 19 Coding for Kids II WEEK 10 ENU 090 603 Computer Science is currently one of the fastest growing industries. This program will build on the skills campers learned in Coding for Kids I. Through hands-on and computer activities students will learn even more vocabulary, build background, and finesse their skill in writing lines of programming code! Household Science ENU 147 603 This new camp brings together creativity and scientific experimentation for a fun, engaging experience. Campers will take household materials they use and see every day and turn them into safe, fun science experiments. Amusement Park Science Challenge ENU 076 602 Do you enjoy going to Amusement parks? Do you love Disney World? Campers will be challenged to design a new Disney roller coaster while learning about potential and kinetic energy and Newton’s Laws of Motion. Afternoon Camps Shake Things Up ENU 140 612 A huge and very destructive earthquake hit Haiti in 2010. Now Jacob and India are there, learning how to support and protect buildings during earthquakes. Your kids will engineer model buildings that are earthquake resistant. They’ll also develop building codes that help others build earthquake resistant structures. CSI Delaware Tech ENU 128 612 Based on the TV show, CSI is a science-based camp that will look at using science to solve crimes. Campers will look at fingerprinting, footprints, teamwork, collecting evidence from a crime scene, and how to use evidence to solve a crime. Campers should come dressed for the outdoors in clothes that can get dirty/wet. Afternoon Camps Go Green: Recycled Racers ENU 134 612 India and Jacob visit Senegal, where they’re impressed by the way people recycle items that would ordinarily be discarded, turning them into toys, sculptures, and household objects. Your kids will use recycled materials to engineer their own toy cars, then compete in a Recycled Racer Rally. Stanton Campus - July 11 - 15 Terry Campus - July 18 - 22 Owens Campus - July 25 - 29 Track your Way through Watersheds For 7th Grade Students Join us for a weeklong adventure in the great outdoors. Learn hands-on techniques used by environmental scientists today. Peer into the world of living plants and animals and explore aquatic and natural environments to determine the health of watersheds. The camp also features a GPS discovery trail, where satellites will help guide you along your way. Later in the week, venture to nearby parks to explore nature at its finest. Stanton Campus - July 25 - 29 Terry Campus - July 11 - 15 Owens Campus - July 18 - 22 Energize the Future For 8th Grade Students Explore methods and solutions for reducing our carbon footprint, using hands-on activities in state-of-the-art college laboratories. You will use engineering and design concepts to construct a solar oven to make nachos and s’mores, build and race a solar car, build and test a wind turbine, and use LEGO Mindstorms NXT to build and program a solar tracker and wind station. This FREE camp will also include a local field trip tied to sustainable energy.
