Spring/Summer 2012
NIGHT OF THE STARS Coming June 16
“A Call to Adventure” is the theme of CKRH’s signature fundraiser
T
ickets and sponsorship opportunities are now available for
NIGHT OF THE STARS, CKRH’s
signature fundraiser that will be held
on June 16 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center.
“A Call to Adventure” is the theme
of this year’s event, which includes
cocktails, dinner and live and silent
auctions. The highlight of the evening
is the presentation of students and horses wearing elaborate costumes created
by the amazing talent, Shirley Gentry,
to match the theme of the event. Eight
lots will be auctioned in the style of a
prestigious Thoroughbred sale with
the highest bidder for each horse gaining a year’s sponsorship of that horse,
along with a commemorative photo
and plaque.
Silent auction items will include art
and photography, children’s items, engraved halters worn by famous Thoroughbreds, gifts for horse enthusiasts,
dining and entertainment packages,
landscape and gardening items, clothing, jewelry and items for home and
office. Additional live auction items
include jewelry, art and other one-of-akind items.
Last year, live auction items included two tickets to the 2012 Masters golf
tournament in Augusta, Ga., that were
donated by A Friend of CKRH and sold
for $6,500. An out-of-state guest was
the highest bidder at $6,200 to secure
a rare opportunity for up to six people
to visit Thoroughbred great Zenyatta
at her home at Lane’s End farm near
Versailles, Ky., and lunch at Dudley’s
restaurant in downtown Lexington.
The “See Zenyatta Package” was made
possible by Zenyatta’s owners, Jerry
and Ann Moss, along with Lane’s End
and Dudley’s owner, Debbie Long.
The 2011 NIGHT OF THE STARS
attracted a sold-out crowd of 500 people from the Lexington area and from
out of state who contributed to one of
the most successful editions ever held.
NOS raised $291,646, second only to
the record amount raised at the 2010
event.
“We were pleased that enthusiasm
and participation at NIGHT OF THE
STARS were so high despite the chal-
lenging economic times,” said CKRH
Executive Director Pat Kline. “NIGHT
OF THE STARS wouldn’t be possible
without the support of Central Kentucky business and the equine community, as well as the tireless work of
CKRH staff and volunteers.”

T
hanks to years of hard work and incredible generosity from many people, businesses and organizations, CKRH’s Education Center, the remaining section of
its remarkable $4.1 million facility on 24 acres at the Kentucky Horse Park, is now
completed.
The Education Center includes two classrooms, including one that will accommodate
one of CKRH’s miniature horses; a therapy room; two observation areas; staff offices;
a small conference room and a kitchen. It was designed by Jerry Herndon of Affinity
Design Group and built by Haydon Company with Preston Construction Group completing the up-fit. Lexmark and Danville Office Liquidators donated office furniture.
Now called the John A. and Virginia Creech Therapeutic Riding Center, CKRH’s
facility has more than 55,000 square feet under one roof, which includes the Education
Center, an indoor arena, stalls, wash racks, tack room and storage. The indoor arena has
unique footing called Attwood Equestrian Surfaces, a dust-free product that does not
need water, and a lift system that enables wheelchair-bound riders to move from wheelchair to horseback.
“Because of the vision and effort of the CKRH founders and the many more who
joined with them in the past three decades, the dream of sharing the physical, mental and
psychological benefits of equine- assisted activities with students with disabilities is now
a nationally recognized program,” CKRH Executive Director Pat Kline said.
Here’s a brief history of CKRH: In 1981, CKRH was founded at the Horse Park by
four people who wanted to introduce therapeutic horseback riding to people with disabilities in Central Kentucky. The first horse used in the program was borrowed from the
Horse Park’s riding concession.
CKRH achieved tax-exempt status in 1982. In 1987, CKRH became a nationally accredited riding center by PATH International (the new name of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association [NARHA]). By 1998, the center was serving 100
students a year. That year, CKRH achieved Premier Accreditation Status with NARHA.
Through 2008, CKRH operated from a converted tobacco barn and two outdoor riding rings at the Horse Park not too far from the present location. In May 2009, CKRH
finished moving to its new facility. The Education Center remained unfinished while the
Under-Cover Campaign to raise funds to complete it continued.
The Under-Cover Campaign officially began in 2004 with the first hosting of our
signature event, NIGHT OF THE STARS. This raised the “seed money” to launch this
initiative. The campaign was named Under-Cover because one of the primary was goals
was to provide a structure that would be minimally impacted by weather. The result
would be consistent, year-round services.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky was the first major donor that offered
support, followed by lead donor John C. Creech.

31 YEARS OF WONDER
T
hirty-one years? It can’t be! I
shake my head in disbelief at
the continued good will and generosity that permeate CKRH after all this
time.
Nowhere else on the local non-profit
landscape can I imagine corporations
and individuals maintaining (or heaven preserve us, increasing) their gala
sponsorship in the fourth year of a recession … or, a 2010 operating budget
that broke even in spite of losing significant revenue because of the Alltech
FEI World Equestrian Games restrictions. WEG restrictions meant the High
Hope Steeplechase, which raises funds
for CKRH, was suspended for a year,
and CKRH had to cancel programming
and workshops for four weeks.
What prompts people to give to a
cause like ours? I think it comes down
to two issues: their belief in the mission
and their trust in the organizers who
carry out that valuable work. Clearly,
in its 31 years of existence, CKRH
has done something right in those two
areas to generate such ongoing support. It could be the staff, instructors
and volunteers who so cheerfully give
their time at all hours of the day in all
kinds of weather; it could be our beloved equine therapists whose patience
and benevolence appear unending, no
matter how often their feet are picked
or tails pulled. Perhaps it’s our constant
“no-frills” approach (despite the new
facility), where frugality still reigns
and in-kind services by generous souls
keep the wheels turning.
I’d like to think it’s all those reasons and then some. Seven years ago
CKRH worked with 86 clients in two
programs: Therapeutic Riding and
Hippotherapy. By 2010, that number
had jumped to 269 clients and included
new partnerships with the Fayette Co.
and Woodford Co. public school systems, Hospice of the Bluegrass and the
Office of Veteran Affairs.
In 2005, CKRH operated from May
through October with the breezy corridors and dusty riding rings of the old
tobacco barn at the Kentucky Horse
Park—weather permitting. By 2010,
CKRH was holding sessions yearround in the new $4.1 million indoor
facility.
In 2005, the second year of the Annual Fund raised just over $24,000; by
2010, that same effort had doubled to
more than $48,000. The list goes on,
but I think you get my point. Such rapid growth is exciting, but what continues to impress me beyond measure is
the vigilant stewardship of the CKRH
Board and staff to maintain service
quality and responsible spending in
this time of expansion.
In spite of tough times, we are
thriving. Yes, CKRH is paddling
hard to keep its head above water just
like everyone else, but we have you—
your interest, your support, your continued loyalty—in the lifeboard with
us. Thank you. May such wonders
never cease.

CKRH RECEIVES $31,000 FROM TCA
T
hanks to three prominent Central Kentucky Thoroughbred farms—Ashford Stud, Darley and WinStar
Farm—all of whom made CKRH their designated charity at
Thoroughbred Charities of America’s 2011 Stallion Season
Auction, CKRH has received a $31,000 a grant from the organization.
TCA, the charitable arm of the Thoroughbred Owners and
Breeders Association (www.tca.org), raises and distributes
money to charitable organizations in Thoroughbred rescue,
retirement and adoption; research; education and backstretch
assistance; and therapeutic riding programs. TCA’s primary
fundraiser is its Stallion Season Auction, held each winter in
Lexington.
In 2011, TCA’s grants to 81 non-profits totaled $903,450.
Over the past 21 years, TCA has distributed more than $18
million to more than 200 accredited charities.
CKRH also was among the charities that benefited
from the total of $350,000 raised last year by the Children’s Charity of the Bluegrass celebrity golf tournament. This year’s event will be held on June 22-23
(www.childrenscharityofthebluegrass.org).
CKRH Mission Statement
Central Kentucky Riding for Hope is dedicated to enriching the community by improving the quality of life and the
health of children and adults with special physical, cognitive, emotional and social needs through therapeutic activities
using the horse.

A HORSE CALLED
WANDA JOINS CKRH
KRH can’t get enough Norwegian Fjords. The
wildly popular Ingrid, full brothers T-Ball and Lightning and now Wanda represent the unique breed at CKRH.
In fact, the four are the only Norwegian Fjords anywhere at
the Kentucky Horse Park.
C
What makes Norwegian Fjords—the horse of the
Vikings—such a good fit for CKRH?
“Their demeanor—all four of them—seems to be more
relaxed, more people-friendly,” said CKRH Equine Manager
Amanda Workman. “They are calm, really smart; they really
care for their riders.”
Golden yellow in color, Norwegian Fjords are small drafttype horses with strong, crested necks and large, expressive
brown eyes. A dark stripe starts in their long, bushy blonde
forelocks, runs through the center of their thick blonde manes
(which are trimmed short to stand up), continues down the
middle of their backs and ends in their tails. Their powerful
legs often have black Zebra-striped markings.
Adding to their visual appeal are their willingness to
please, intelligence, versatility and strength. At last year’s
NIGHT OF THE STARS, CKRH’s signature fundraiser,
Ingrid, T-Ball and Lightning all performed in costume.
Cat Cole shows off SF Juanita Mae, or Wanda, a Norwegian Fjord whose
addition to CKRH was made possible by Cat’s family.
Wanda’s sale price so Cole’s donation to CKRH covered her
purchase. Wanda is now is one of 28 members of CKRH’s
horse herd, which includes five miniature horses (“minis”)
and several horses at CKRH on a trial basis.
The Cole family soon visited Wanda at CKRH.
“I thought she was a very beautiful horse,” said Cat, who
is graduating from Murray State University and has been on
the Western riding team.
Wanda’s arrival at CKRH not only fulfilled the wishes
of a World War II veteran in helping other veterans, but it
marked a family reunion of sorts. Her great-grandsire, King
Harald, is the grandsire of T-Ball and Lightning.
The 14-year-old Wanda, whose registered name is SF
Juanita Mae, came to CKRH through unique circumstances. Not too long ago, then CKRH Board President Walter
Palmer and his wife, Sandra, hosted a family get-together
that included Sandra’s cousin, William Cole of Georgetown,
Ky., and his wife, Elaine. Elaine happened to mention she
had a horse; Walter told her about CKRH and how it was trying to improve the new Horses for Heroes program in which
military veterans work with horses. Elaine decided to make
a donation to Horses for Heroes in honor of her late father,
Arthur Knowles, a World War II veteran who had supported
a variety of veterans programs.
CKRH has a process to select horses that will be safe mounts
for our participants and will be happy with their new careers
as therapy horses. As you might imagine, our staff receives
many calls and emails from people wishing to lease or donate
their horses.
“He was in the Battle of the Bulge and some other big battles in World War II that really impacted him, and so that’s
why it was so important to him to be involved in veterans
programs,” said the Coles’ daughter Catherine “Cat” about
her grandfather.
We need you!
At the time, CKRH needed to acquire several horses to
participate in the Horses for Heroes program and contacted
noted Norwegian Fjord breeders Neil and Ruth Sorum in
Lebanon, Ohio.
A military veteran himself, Neil Sorum took an interest in
CKRH’s Horses for Heroes program. He deeply discounted

CKRH IS CENTER OF
PATH INTL. CONFERENCE
I
n November 2011, a record crowd gathered in Lexington for PATH Intl.’s annual
meeting and conference, and CKRH had a strong presence at the event, providing volunteers and coordinating numerous activities.
CKRH Program Director Denise Spittler served as chairwoman of Equine Affair, a
daylong educational event at the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. Dr. Kristina Lu and her husband, Dr. Peter Morresey, both of whom are equine veterinarians
and serve on the CKRH Board of Directors, gave a well-attended seminar in which
they reviewed various breeds of horses used for equine-assisted therapies.
PATH Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International)
is now the name of the organization formerly called NARHA. According to PATH Intl.’s website (pathintl.org), the name change was necessary because the previous name:
as deemed obsolete because of the word “handicapped,” which is
•W
inappropriate, outdated terminology.
id not convey the breadth of the organization and its disciplines,
•D
previously limited to riding.
• Did not convey international growth.
• Did not include the mental health field.
PATH Intl. was founded in 1969 as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) to promote safe
and effective therapeutic horseback riding in the U.S. and Canada. Today, PATH Intl. has nearly 800 member centers and more
than 6,300 individual members in countries all over the world
who help and support more than 42,000 men, women and children with special needs each year through a variety of equineassisted activity and therapy programs.
Healing Hooves
returns to CKRH
Healing Hooves, a partnership between CKRH
and Hospice of the Bluegrass, will be held for the
sixth year on July 25-28.
The unique experience allows children and teenagers
to work through their grief
over the loss of a loved one
such as a sibling, parent or
grandparent by combining equine therapy, music
therapy and art therapy.
With the help of horses,
grief counselors and equine
specialists, participants
complete activities surrounding grief education,
establishing grief support
and self care.

AT&T SPONSORS
HORSES FOR HEROES
M
ilitary veterans who return from combat can have
physical and mental conditions that cause depression and anxiety and lead to substance abuse and other serious issues while affecting their relationships with family and
friends. At CKRH, a program called Horses for Heroes, currently sponsored by AT&T, is using the healing power of the
horse to help these veterans.
Approximately 16 veterans participate in the 12-week
programs, which include two-hour sessions on Mondays and
Wednesdays. Taking part in the sessions are mental health
professionals from the VA, equine specialists representing
CKRH and specially trained horses that reside at CKRH and
participate in a variety of therapeutic activities for children
and adults.
Horses for Heroes is using the healing power of horses to help
military veterans.
Testimonials of three participants
I am an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran who served in a high exposure to combat unit and was diagnosed with PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) after returning home. My symptoms included severe anxiety, depression and the inability to sleep.
I began using alcohol and other substances to cope. It was not until I lost my marriage, job, military career, self-respect and
almost my life that I began putting 100% of my effort into therapy.
This program is great. It gave me a chance to get out and begin to socialize. The CKRH staff is so knowledgeable about horses and has such a passion for helping veterans. They helped ease my nervousness and went out of their way to provide therapy.
The horse therapy gave me confidence. It gave me something to look forward to. Working with horses calms you down. It
takes your mind off many things. Trail riding through the Kentucky Horse Park and grooming horses were very relaxing. I
highly recommend this program to anyone with PTSD. — W.G. Parrigan
Thanks to Horses for Heroes, I learned new skills and a new hobby I will be able to enjoy for the rest of my life. We veterans
were able to socialize, get some exercise and bond with our horses, which for me was really special. Horses are good listeners
when you want to get something off your chest. The Kentucky Horse Park is calming and peaceful and feels like a safe place.
I looked forward to every lesson. I was able to challenge myself, and as I progressed, it really helped with self esteem and
depression. I recommend Horses for Heroes to any veteran. — J. Chestut
The Horses for Heroes program at CKRH will change peoples’ lives. The program got me thinking about getting out instead
of shutting out the world. It’s hard having PTSD, and sometimes veterans like me have a hard time moving forward. This
program can help get you moving in the right direction. — J. Marcum
We’re looking for veterans
Do you know a military veteran who would be interested in participating in Horses for Heroes?
Participants enjoy:
• Learning horsemanship.
• Developing riding skills.
• Learning about horse behavior.
• Socializing with other veterans.
• R
iding in an indoor arena and on the trail through the Kentucky Horse Park.
Taking part in the sessions are mental health professionals from the VA, equine specialists representing CKRH
and specially trained horses that reside at CKRH and participate in a variety of therapeutic activities for
children and adults.

BLUEGRASS RAPE CRISIS CENTER
PARTNERS WITH CKRH
“B
eautiful.” “Balance.” “Strength.” “Friend. “I trust
you.” These are just a few affirmations written in
chalk that appeared last fall on the shiny coats of the horses of CKRH. The words were written by survivors of rape
and childhood sexual abuse who participated in a unique
pioneering collaboration between CKRH and the Bluegrass
Rape Crisis Center.
Called the BRCC/CKRH EAST Group, the innovative
experience built upon the existing eight-week BRCC Building Blocks Group curriculum and provided equine-assisted
skills experiences that capitalize on the long-established
horse-human bond to promote healing. The name EAST
(Equine Assisted Survivors of Trauma) fits perfectly with
the collaboration’s objective to provide survivors of sexual
violence a new day filled with hope and promise.
The program resulted from CKRH’s desire to expand its
mental health programming and BRCC’s commitment to offer cutting-edge healing opportunities to survivors of sexual
violence.
“All EAST sessions consisted of non-mounted activities where group members partnered with their horses to
complete tasks designed to put the skills learned in BRCC’s
Building Blocks group into practice,” said Charlotte Easley,
a graduate student in the Master of Social Work program at
Asbury University who is interning at CKRH. “The Building Blocks Curriculum was developed by BRCC and has
been used successfully for group work many times. We just
understood that adding the equine component would take the
results to the next level.”
Once a week, participants gathered at CKRH for the
EAST Group, which combined psycho-education, skills
building, and equine-assisted learning to create a personal
journey of therapeutic healing. From walking to the field to
catch and halter their horses to meditating, from serpentine
walking to grooming, survivors participated in exercises
designed to assist them in working through common symptoms of trauma, such as trust issues, relationship challenges,
hyper-vigilance and post-traumatic stress.
Results of the initial program
Based on pre- and post-surveys of the inaugural EAST
Group, participants improved their coping and relational
skills and reduced their traumatic symptoms by 33%. They
gained confidence in working with horses and in their abilities to interact successfully with their horse and others.
When asked about the value of the combined group and the
ability to better manage emotions, symptoms and interpersonal relationships, the overall consensus was that adding
the equine component enhanced the therapeutic process for
clients. Responses included: “The personality of my horse
matched mine so well; he taught me so many things I could
not have discovered on my own” and “Animals and music
cut through the layers of my defenses faster than anything
else – awesome combination.”
These results have encouraged continued collaboration
between the two agencies in a commitment to provide the
best possible services to survivors of sexual trauma in Central Kentucky. However, financial support is needed for the
program to continue. For more information on how you can
financially contribute to the EAST Group, contact Pat Kline
at CKRH at (859) 231-7066 or pat@ckrh.org. For general
information about the EAST Group, contact the Bluegrass
Rape Crisis Center toll-free at (800) 656- HOPE (4673).
Hippotherapy seminar scheduled for July
C
KRH will host American Hippotherapy
Association-approved clinics in Level 1 Equine
Skills and Hippotherapy Treatment Principles on July 1215. Leading the sessions will be Lisa Harris, who initiated
and coordinates CKRH’s accredited hippotherapy program,
which is partnered with Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.
Last year, 21 participants from 10 states traveled to
CKRH for the clinics. The 1 1/2-day equine skills course
targeted therapists and assistants with minimal to no horse
experience in nonmounted equine skills. Participants
worked with horses in teams of two or three. The 2 1/2-day
course in treatment principals was for entry-level therapists
using hippotherapy as a treatment strategy and those in or
working with hippotherapy teams.
