An eggcellent adventure at Jubilee!
Easter and springtime at Jubilee Day Nursery and
Jubilee Gems (their term-time nursery) is all about new
beginnings.
The first buds bloom, animals stir and the earth seems to
come to life again. Children at Jubilee’s nurseries immerse
themselves in all that this time of year has to offer.
The children get first-hand experience of eggs hatching encountering life cycles, growth and development. In turn,
this also encourages social interaction and promotes caring
and nurturing skills.
Older children might help collect freshly-laid eggs from the
chickens on the farm (which are also used in our delicious,
home-cooked food), go on a bug hunt through our private
woodland and everyone looks forward to the birth of new
lambs!
Located in Padworth Common (between Reading,
Basingstoke and Newbury) and set in 53 acres of stunning
countryside, farmland and woodland; Jubilee provide
exceptional care for babies from 3 months to children up to 5
years of age.
They are passionate about supporting children on their
journey as effective and motivated learners and their
dedicated, skilled and caring team plan stimulating activities
in a rich environment that children enjoy
and learn from.

Considering a career as a foster
carer? What are you waiting for?
A foster care agency, still run by its co-founders 21 years
after it started, is urging people across North Hampshire
to consider becoming a foster carer.
Foster Care Associates (FCA) recruitment campaign ‘What Are
You Waiting For?’ is inspired from the moment in 1994 when
FCA’s co-founder, Jan Rees OBE, experienced what she calls
‘her light-bulb moment’ after reading an article on fostering.
This led to her life-changing decision to care for young people
in need.
Unlike adoption, a fostered child remains the legal
responsibility of the local authority and/or their birth parents,
and ensures that children who cannot be with their parents
or other relatives, for whatever reasons, can be cared for in a
family situation.
Foster carers with FCA receive frequent visits and contact
from a dedicated and qualified social worker. Support is also
provided through an education officer, support workers and
therapist to help carers meet the needs of child or young
person. Ongoing training, a financial allowance, access to
carer support groups and organised family activities are all
contributing factors as to why FCA placements are 22% more
stable than the national average.
For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA call
0800 022 4012 and
speak to the FCA
Recruitment Team, or
enquire online at

‘‘The sense of being part of a family, part of a community with
shared goals and interests, is a very powerful experience. Our
unique family ethos is apparent in all areas of the school, from
staff sitting amongst the children at lunchtime and promoting
good table manners to the numerous systems of peer support
that exist between children. Children learn best when they feel
safe, able to make mistakes and more importantly learn from
them.’’

comments, “Family” means different things to people. For
some it is having someone to count on and share problems
with. For others it is a feeling of security, or an indication
of responsibility and for many it is simply a word used for
people we love. At Yateley Manor we believe family describes
our ethos; it is all of this and more. For us, providing a safe
and happy environment where pupils are challenged and
communication is strong is of paramount importance. An
excellent education is built upon strong relationships, just as in
a family.

Boost your child’s
literacy and numeracy
by Liat Hughes Joshi
Literacy and numeracy are central to your child’s
learning in primary school and will underpin many of the
subjects they’ll cover during their secondary education.
They are of course crucial to later life too.
Whether they’re already acing their algebra or still
struggling with basic sums, here are some ideas on
how to give these key skills a boost.
A little extra learning at home can work
wonders…but don’t go overboard!
In busy classrooms of 30 pupils, teachers understandably
can struggle to provide one-on-one attention. By working
on specific areas with your child, you can make a huge
difference. Keep it sensible– even ten or fifteen minutes a day
can have an impact yet still leaves hours for playing.
Find out about the methods their school uses
to ensure consistency
Reading and numeracy are both typically taught quite
differently to when most of us were children, so it’s certainly
worth finding out how their school does things to avoid
confusing your child.

Incorporate ‘stealth learning’ into everyday

Sneak maths and literacy into day-to-day life and you can
improve skills without it feeling like schoolwork. Adding up

writing a postcard to the
grandparents can all help.

How to make your parties
age-appropriate
It’s difficult to know how to keep kids entertained
at parties. It’s even more difficult to know how to
change the format of the party as kids get older.
At what age do face paints and musical statues
no longer cut it? For which age group would you
book an entertainer? And when do you move
from a party to an outing?
When it comes to birthday parties, we’ve learnt over the years
that a can-do attitude and great planning is what’s needed.
Try to ensure that you don’t give yourself too much of a
nightmare. When they are young, you may want to restrict how
many friends your child invites (though of course often we end
up inviting the whole class, because that’s what everyone else
does) and you’ll want to be sensible about how long it lasts; an
hour is plenty for pre-schoolers and those in the first couple of
years of Infant school.
Pre-school
Keep it simple. Think dressing up, treasure hunt, face paints and
games and have the party at home. Lay out sandwiches and
savoury eats first, keeping sweet treats for after. Buy the cake
and give a book instead of a party bag. Put presents to one side
and open them afterwards.
4-7 Years
An entertainer comes into their own with this age group. Why
not ask a friend or relative to take on the task and plan out some
games and activities beforehand. Pass the parcel remains a firm
favourite for this age group but other games such as pin the tail
on the donkey and a Piñata will also be a hit.

8-11 Years
Book a hall, go to a sports centre or cinema, learn a skill at a
restaurant or have it at home (depending on your numbers and
bravado). Games include the Chocolate Game (roll a six, dress
up, eat the chocolate with a knife and fork), Chubby Bunnies
(stuff – but don’t eat - marshmallows in turn, saying chubby
bunnies each time) and The Flour Game (cut shards off the flour
cake until the coin balanced on top falls. The person responsible
retrieves it using only their mouth). Feed them pizza and let
them make their own ice cream sundae.
Teen
As always with teenagers, it is all about communication – ha!
Sometimes this is easier said than done. Some will want to do
what all their friends are doing, while others would they to do
something entirely different. Activities outdoors such as paint
balling or Go Ape, the cinema, bowling and theatre can offer
this.

two young girls. When she's not off gadding she can be found bloggingWritingLifeAsItIs.blogspot.co.uk.

‘‘Are we there
yet?’’
Perfect homemade pizza!
Travelling long distances with kids can be tricky.
They get bored, they need entertaining, they argue
and they think even a short journey is the longest
ever! If you are going away for an Easter break
here are some ways to get there without going grey
in the process.
Create a magical destination
If the children know where
you’re going and what
they’ll find when you get
there, they can be more
enthusiastic about the
journey. Find out facts
about your destination,
make them a booklet they
can fill in with things they
spot and have a ‘prize’ when
they get there for being good.
Check List
Change of clothing
sick bags, toilet roll,
colouring books and
pencils, sticker books,
games, pillows,
blankets and a mini
first aid kit.
Pack Snacks
Kids get bored if energy levels drop, so pack snacks they can
nibble on along the way; rice cakes, crackers, crisps and mini
sandwiches are ideal. However, let the front passenger control
these so they don’t eat them all at once. Always save sweet
treats until last and make sure drinks are in spill-proof cups.
Play Games
Pizza is a great dish to make with, and for, the family. The
kids can join in with rolling out the dough and choosing their
own toppings. It’s not as difficult as it may seem, and with just
a little effort you will get great results, and never go back to
supermarket pizza again. The instructions given here are using
a Kenwood Chef - if you don’t have a machine, it’s still possible
to make dough, you just need a bit of elbow grease!
Ingredients:
500g ‘00’ flour
Pinch of sea salt
7g sachet of dried instant yeast
tsp caster sugar
30ml extra virgin olive oil
325ml water
Passata
Grated cheese
Chosen toppings
Method:
Add the flour, salt, yeast & sugar to the mixer bowl and
attach the dough hook.
Add the olive oil & half the water & set the machine running.
Add more water slowly, until a sticky (but not wet) dough is
formed.
Keep the machine running for a few minutes until the dough
is soft & elastic.
Place in a lightly oiled bowl & cover & leave in a warm place
to double in size.
Divide into 2 (for large pizzas) or 6 (for individual pizzas)
Roll out on a floured surface.
Place on a baking sheet & spread passata over pizza bases
Play the spotting game. The kids win points for every animal
they notice - on pub signs, shops, etc. - and the winner gets to
pick what you spot next. If you’re feeling really generous, you
could offer a small prize.
Cover with grated cheese & mozzarella & add chosen
toppings.
Play Music or Films
For lots more delicious family recipes visit
Whilst you might restrict the use of tablets at home, this is
when they are worth their weight in gold. Give each child their
favourite film, and of course headphones. If you only have
one tablet, you can buy an inexpensive converter for two sets
of headphones. If they are getting really stir crazy, classical
music can calm them. Try Mozart clarinet and string concertos,
ballet music, Radio 3 or Classic FM.
Bake in preheated 200C oven for approx. 15 minutes.
