Art in the School 2010 Newsletter
The Coolest Thing That Happened Last Summer! What happens when you give eight teams of stylists and designers just five minutes for make up, 10 minutes for hair and a mere 20 minutes for fashion design with unconventional fashion items? An amazing, creative explosion of style! Clash Couture was the most energetic, loud, fun styling competition ever! Over four hundred people turned out for the first-ever event held at the Wool Warehouse on July 16, which was a fundraiser for Art “Thank you so much for teaching me how to make in the School. Many people collaborated to make this event a huge success. Josh Talamante, who created the concept as a senior year service project, is a recent graduate of East Mountain High School and now attends UNM. Joe LiRosi, Director of Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy, co-chaired the project and enlisted the help of many of his students and colleagues in the local style and design industries. Joanne Pils, Director of Student Services at the Art Center Design College, rallied the College’s students to design the décor and all the graphics, advertising and website. Hosting the event were Dan Mayfield, now Editor of Albuquerque The Magazine, and Kiki Garcia, a 93.3 KOB-FM dj. The local media graciously supported the event with ample airtime and advertising space: Clear Channel Outdoor, 93.3 KOB-FM, Alibi, Local IQ and Albuquerque The Magazine. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the creative, fun evening for a great cause! Using Art to Enrich Math and Geometry: Our Summer Workshop for Teachers tessellations. Beth Larsen and Bethe Sailer presented the workshops which really outstanding demonstrated how to use a quilt making lesson and a lesson on the fascinating job. We even got artwork of M.C. Escher to engage students’ imaginations and use their math and into ‘rotational geometry skills in a fun and creative way. The summer workshop was funded by symmetry.’” grants from the Albuquerque Community Foundation and Lockheed Martin/ Summer Workshop Participant Sandia National Laboratories. After School Program Expands to Four Schools Smiling faces and happy, engaged children will greet you when you visit any of Art in the School’s after school art programs, which expanded to a third elementary school and introduced a new middle school program in early 2010. During the 2009-2010 school year, more than 250 children attended classes at Apache, Chelwood and Manzano Mesa Elementary Schools and at McKinley Middle School, all in Albuquerque. The program is designed to provide supplemental art education to children at Title I schools. Several UNM Art Education Program graduate students taught the classes, as well as several other well-qualified art teachers. The after school art program is funded by grants and donations and provided at no cost to the schools or children. The middle school program at McKinley was introduced in January. McKinley is one of five middle schools in Albuquerque which do not offer art as an elective. Bethe Sailer wrote the curriculum for the program which focuses on self-identity and allows students to express themselves through various media and expressions of selfportraiture, including drawing, collage, clay, painting, and wire art. Board member Woody Duncan, who taught middle school art for several decades, consulted on the curriculum. Guest artists visited the classes twice during the semester. Watercolorist J.K. Drummond and Augustine Romero, a sculptor, talked with students about how they pursued their passion for art in college and now as their career. A highlight of the program was a Saturday trip to the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History. Most of the students who went had never been to the museum before. One student wrote in the museum’s guest book: “No real words to describe the beauty of the art here. Each tells a story in eyes of others. The art is all wonderful.” art The year’s training workshops began with a look at ancient Assyrian clay reliefs at the palace of Assurbanipal. Volunteers showed images of these reliefs to children, then taught them how to create a clay relief of their own heroes. Next it was off to sub-Saharan Africa for a look at tribal masks. Dr. Nancy Pauly, Associate Professor of Art Education at UNM, gave a fascinating background lecture and shared her experiences traveling to African nations and learning about their art and cultures. Volunteers learned how to teach children to make their own masks from paper, seeds, beans, feathers and more to express their own creativity. Dr. Pauly returned to provide the background lecture on molas – the colorful, reverse appliqué fabric art of the Kuna women of the San Blas islands near Panama. Volunteers learned how to teach children to make both paper and fabric mola-inspired art. The mola lesson took on even greater meaning for a Bandelier Elementary School third grade class taught by volunteer Lezlie Schreiber. Lezlie taught the lesson to her son’s class soon after the devastating Haiti earthquake, and the children expressed their desire to do something to help the victims. With the help of APS Graphics Department, the children turned their paper mola creations into colorful note cards which they sold to raise money for a Haiti relief organization. The class’ teacher, Christine Fietek, used the opportunity to reinforce math, research and literacy skills as they researched charitable organizations. The experience demonstrated how an Art in the School lesson can best be used to reinforce learning in all the core subjects. The year ended with a look at four distinct modern painters – Mondrian, Frankenthaler, Kandinsky and Stella. Dr. Wesley Pulkka, artist, art historian and critic, provided the insightful background lecture. Bethe’s detailed instruction included art-making instruction with several age-appropriate projects. During the 2010-2011 school year, volunteers are discovering A World of Art: New Mexico’s Treasures celebrating our state’s rich cultural heritage, with lessons on Pueblo pottery, Navajo weaving, Hispanic tin smith craft and the landscapes of Georgia O’Keeffe. Fall 2010 Message from the President As the AIS Board enthusiastically ventures in to yet another year of bringing art enrichment to children, we are reminded that our history now reflects 25 years of excellence in our volunteer program! Twenty five years of nonstop quality instruction and hands-on exploration of visual arts for elementary school age students and for our adult volunteers! It reflects hundreds of adults working with generations of students to secure an ever-important place for the arts in our future. In addition to our Volunteer Program, Art in the School is building an After School Art Program which incorporates another component of our community, UNM graduate students in supervised teaching opportunities with elementary and middle school students. This propelled our program forward to include middle school age students! Quilt raffles, an art sale of work by local and a few out-of-state artists, an upbeat fashion show, a huge garage sale, and plans for more, comprised last year’s initiative towards this goal. Our Board Members come from all areas of expertise: architecture, program design and coordination, teaching wonderful opportunity and challenge. Last year, the Lumpkin Family Foundation’s grant enabled us to expand our after school programs and enhance our volunteer program. They also presented us with a $10,000 challenge grant for the 2010-2011 school year. They challenged us to raise $10,000, then they committed to matching it with another $10,000, basically doubling the power of your donation. We’re very pleased to report that all our efforts paid off – we reached the goal! Thank you to so many people, including many new supporters, who helped us reach this goal. And thank you most of all to the Lumpkin Family Foundation for this wonderful incentive to expand our base of support and reach more children than before. She has skillfully created new income through grants, coordinated both the Volunteer and After School Programs, designed training sessions for teachers, maintains the website, and continually finds quality enrichment opportunities for children. Bravo, Beth. One can sense the level of excitement these days. Our board and executive director, volunteers, student teachers, students and families all look forward to another quarter of a century of joining our schools and community in bringing fine art to our future arts advocates….our children. -Barbara Lohbeck, Board President 93.3 KOB-FM Local IQ Morrow Reardon Wilkinson Miller, Ltd.
