You can purchase a few tickets each to use over two or three days.
Tickets are just $14 per person when you book a group of 10

Meet guest artist Sharyn Hall and see her
fabric creations with colours that sing.
“With textiles I love the way the colours sing when they are
placed together correctly, the wonderful serendipity of
working long hours to find it all ‘falls into place.’ The right
combination of colour, shape, size, form and texture gives me
the opportunity to bring enjoyment to others.”
Sharyn Hall’s love for textiles began at an early age when she
would assist her mother, making soft toys, children’s clothing,
interior design items and accessories for sale. Since then Sharyn
has become a leader in textile arts. Sharyn excels in the art of
surface design using an endless array of techniques.

Culture and landscape spark design ideas that imbue a
sense of spirit.
Sharyn uses photography as a tool and derives her core
inspiration from the colours and textures that her pictures depict.
The culture and landscape of her travels evoke a sense of direction
to her work and spark design ideas that imbue a sense of spirit.
Manipulation and embellishment
of the fabric surface through
techniques such as dyeing,
resists and discharges including
shibori are used to bring the
designs to life. As well a variety
of printing and mixed media
techniques, including computer
manipulated and generated
imagery are core methods
featured in her work. Sharyn also
utilises hand and machine stitching as well as beading, to create
colour and texture on the fabric surface.
Sharyn has travelled to Japan, the United States, Canada, the
United Kingdom, France and also Australia-wide to learn and
teach about the infinite diversity of textile surface design. This year
she will be travelling with the Craft & Quilt Fairs around Australia
to show first hand her internationally acclaimed textile skills and
provide inspiration.
This is a fantastic opportunity to meet
Sharyn, sure to inspire and not to be missed!

Victorian Quilt
ShowcaSe 2010
Unearthed by Jan Frazer
In what promises to be a totally
inspiring experience, this year,
the Victorian Quilters Inc display
presents over 300 examples of
traditional, innovative and art
quilts, proudly made by members
in a variety of sizes from miniature
to queen size. All visitors are
welcome to attend the awards
ceremony at noon on the opening
day of the Fair – Thursday July 22.
There’s also a number of other exhibits not to be missed:
• An enthralling retrospective of 30 quilts by Jan Frazer, featured
as the Profiled Quilter–includingherveryfirstone.
• The 13 quilts entered in the Victorian Quilters’ Twenty-Twenty
Challenge 2010.
• This year, two groups feature in Profile a Member Group,
with the Cohuna Quilters exhibiting their work from a Gloria
Loughman Workshop funded by a Grant from Victorian
Quilters Inc; as well as the newest group, Westernport Quilters,
displayingtheresultsoftheirfirstChallenge,depictingthe
superb coastal and mountain scenery surrounding them.
• In the Theme Area, quilts new and old depict the Winding Ways
block in all its forms, but the Innovative Category encourages
entrants to take it further into the world of reinvention – but with
its origins still recognisable.
• Victorian Quilters Inc is proud to be displaying the Quilt Aid
Quilts which, this year, is supporting the Fistula Hospital in
Addis Ababa. Helen Stubbings of Tasmania is the Australian
Coordinator for this project.
Demonstrations
Throughout the Exhibition,
VQ is demonstrating the quiltmaking process from cutting
it out to binding it, plus
hand-piecing, hand-quilting
and appliqué techniques, with
all quilts made going to the
Very Snuggly Quilt Program.

Raffle Quilt
Karen Styles and her team at
Somerset Patchwork and Quilting
(Linda Bear and Sue Ambrose) have
produced this magnificent Raffle
Quilt, Somerset Stars, to their own
design – fussy-cut, machine-pieced
and long-arm machine-quilted. The
alternative prize is a Bernina 120
Sewing Machine. Tickets are only
$2 and already selling like hot cakes. It represents Victorian
Quilters’ only fundraiser of the year and aids their Grants and
charitable works Programs, as well as VQ events.

New AP&Q AQC Challenge
quilts on display
Be inspired by the finalists’
entries in the second annual
AP&Q AQC Challenge.
More than 30 wonderful quilts will tour with the Craft & Quilt Fair
this year, sponsored by Australian Patchwork & Quilting magazine.
Original designs with the theme ‘Remember,’ by quiltmakers from
Australia, France, Canada, the United States and New Zealand,
competed for cash prizes totalling $7500.
The winners of the AP&Q AQC 2010 Challenge will amaze you and
the other entries are sure to stir emotion too.

A group entry by the Material Girls;
Christine Kondratenko, Marilyn
Lowder, Sandra Lyons, Denise
Sargo and Kerry Stern, called
‘Remembering a Grecian Urn’
is inspired by Keats’ ‘Ode On a
Grecian Urn’. Their quilt shows how
elusive details become as we try to
remember, yet feel the essence of
what has been.
‘Double Happiness Shoes’ by
Margaret Lamb is a nostalgic
reminder of village life scenes from
her visits to China in the 1980s. At
this time people were just emerging
from the uniform drab grey or navy
Mao suits and starting to enjoy
choosing bright colours and quirky
designs again. Everyone wore these
colourful, locally stitched cloth shoes.
‘First Kiss’ by Anne Davis asks: was
your first kiss shy or sweet, tentative
or tender, did your heart skip a beat?
Helen Godden’s quilt ‘They Grow Up
So Fast!’ urges us to cherish every
day, recording precious moments of
a daughter’s journey growing up.

ART U WEAR
Visitors to the Fair this year can see
some of the costumes which were
created for a challenge at the Textile
Art Festival in Brisbane in June.
The theme of the Art U Wear challenge
was Alice in Wonderland and inspiration
abounds in the entries submitted by
fabric artists in response to it. Indeed,
their creations reflect the myriad diverse
reactions that are possible to this old
favourite and the various approaches they produced.
Alice herself had several gowns
designed for her – and a couple
of coats, too – all appropriate
to the different aspects of life
in Wonderland, particularly the
Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. There
is even one for the Mad Hatter’s
wife – complete, of course,
with a stunning hat. A couple
of artists set Alice right here in
Australia, one giving her access
to the ‘wonderland’ of the Great
Barrier Reef. The other touches
on the use of long-legged
birds as croquet mallets – in
a profusion of luxurious emu
feathers. That wouldn’t happen
here for sure, she firmly believes,
but adds that: “Alice might fit in
well at the Birdsville Races”.
The Red Queen and the Queen
of Hearts both have sumptuous
costumes they’re bound to
be happy with and the rabbit
hole that started it all was
another source of inspiration.
The caterpillar, too, puts in an
appearance a couple of times,
as well as the keyhole and –
naturally – the White Rabbit.

Alice is seen variously as
both ‘tall’ and ‘small’ by some
entrants, one of whom envisaged
her as ‘growing’ after the ‘Eat
Me’ cake episode, and designed
her an elegant – long – robe to
wear during this phase, complete
with keyholes to peep through.
Another, on the other hand, saw
her just like her own 2-year-old –
who looks so sweet and innocent
in her mum’s creation.
Apart from the extensive thought
and work that are apparent in
these pieces and the amazing
concepts they represent, the
designers’ statements describing
their creative processes are
also enthralling – and intriguing.
Altogether, it’s a spectacle
definitely not to be missed.

for nearly 20 years and now runs a successful mail order/website

Gai’s specialty is patchwork, quilting and appliqué. She has tips on
fabric choice, colour basics and tricks with piecing and appliqué.

Prudence Mapstone, Prudence Mapstone
Prudence has expertise in fibre art including art knitting and
sculptural crochet. She loves creating wearable art and is always
experimenting with unusual textiles and fibres.
Julie Wallace, Quilters Barn
Julie has been part of the patchwork industry for 20 years. She
has written three books on patchwork, produced a video and DVD.
She has also designed over 600 fabrics, taught all over the world
including Japan, America, Holland, Sth Africa, the UK China and on
a Pacific cruise and Caribbean cruise.
Rosemary Whittaker, Stitch in Time
Rosemary is a patchwork and sewing enthusiast
with over 18 years’ experience in her field.
Her love of colour and dressmaking is
evident in the advice and knowledge
she shares with her customers.

York City, USA. The work is three metres long and titled Barren to
Bountiful: What a Difference the Rain Makes. It took more than 250

Following the popularity of renowned felt artisan
Wendy Bailye’s demonstrations last year, she will be
running a Make & Take Felting Studio during the fair.
Wendy is an award-winning Brisbane-based contemporary
felt artisan. She has been felt making for over 15 years and
runs a vibrant felt art studio from her home with monthly
workshops as well as working on commissions and refining her
felt making practice.
A Home Economics and special education teacher by training,
Wendy is passionate about teaching and facilitating others’
creative journey using felt as a medium.
Working with a very eclectic mix of wool fibres, fabrics, silks,
threads and recycled materials, she produces fibre rich artworks.
Each one of her unique pieces tells a story.
The making of handmade wool felt is an ancient technique that
has developed into a very advanced contemporary art form
including the use of a wide variety of modern materials.
