2013 PPL Highlights - Project for Pride in Living
On the cover: PPL developed the Rising Cedar Apartments, which opened in 2013. We’re all in! Together, we made positive change happen in our community in 2013. You, as a partner, investor, and friend of Project for Pride in Living (PPL) helped people overcome barriers, reimagine themselves, and achieve self-reliance. Nothing demonstrates the impact of PPL’s programs and services better than stories of personal success. In the following pages you’ll meet just four people whose achievements represent the tremendous work of PPL. Of special note, in 2013, PPL had a leadership change. After heading up PPL for 16 years, Steve Cramer transitioned to take the reins of the Minneapolis Downtown Council and Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District. Steve was an exemplary leader for PPL. Through his guidance and vision, PPL grew from a budget of $11.5 million with 98 full-time staff to a $38 million organization with 189 full-time staff. We went from 364 units of affordable housing, almost all in Minneapolis, to over 1,050 throughout the Twin Cities region. And, PPL increased the number of those served annually from 2,000 to over 13,000. We thank Steve for his sense of innovation, commitment to mission, and steadfast vision that has helped so many low-income families, individuals, and neighborhoods achieve greater stability. In April 2014, PPL welcomed Paul Williams as its fourth Executive Director. Paul brings a wealth of experience in government, philanthropy, and community building to PPL. His vision and passion for community development and closing economic and racial disparity gaps, as well as his collaborative approach, are a good fit for PPL as we look to the future. Positive change is at PPL’s heart. We build a healthier, more vibrant community every day, but we don’t do it alone. We do it with your help. Thank you for the many ways you helped PPL create life-changing opportunities in 2013. Sincerely, PPL Board Chair 3 2013 Results PPL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low-income individuals and families develop the tools they need to achieve selfsufficiency through a broad range of programs and services. We believe in empowering participants to be accountable and responsible for their own growth toward self-reliance. This reinforces our mission: PPL works with lower-income individuals and families to achieve greater self-sufficiency through housing, employment training, support services, and education. HOUSING STABILITY PPL develops and sustains a wide variety of safe, quality affordable housing for lowincome families and individuals through new construction, renovation, and property management activities. Discover how Crystal’s PPL apartment is a symbol of her fresh start in life (Page 6). ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT PPL’s work readiness and job training programs help individuals at every stage increase their opportunities for economic advancement. Find out how Tiffany stopped selling gelato and started a career path with PPL’s Employment Training Program (Page 7). 4 ADULT & FAMILY STABILITY Families and individuals in our housing access one-to-one services and community building activities onsite, customized to their needs. With strong motivation and PPL’s support services, see how James is achieving selfreliance (Page 8). YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT To help break the cycle of poverty, PPL connects students of every age to resources and relationships to help them succeed from early childhood through high school graduation. Development Award for our multi-faceted Hawthorne EcoVillage project and one recognizing PPL’s longevity and success as a nonprofit housing developer. 2013 PPL Highlights •In August, PPL, along with Touchstone Mental Health, celebrated the opening of Rising Cedar, a 40-unit supportive housing development and wellness center. The beautiful project was created to support individuals with persistent mental illness who are at risk of homelessness. The building’s remarkable design recognizes the intersection between people and architecture to support resident health. Features include green design elements, a soothing color palette, a comfortable outdoor space, and expansive corridors. PPL owns and manages the property, while Touchstone Mental Health provides services. •PPL received two honors from the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers in 2013: a Community •PPL celebrated the 15th triumphant year of our first sector-based employment training program—Train to Work. In 1998, PPL launched Train to Work to move low-income individuals in the Phillips community of Minneapolis into livable wage jobs with our employer partners at area hospitals and clinics. It quickly grew into a highly successful program. Today, Train to Work is our signature sector-based training program model that has stood the test of time and been a springboard for other high growth industry trainings. Over 1,325 people have graduated from Train to Work, with 880 placed in new career pathways since its inception. •In fall 2013, PPL was awarded a Lutheran Volunteer Corps Member for the first time. The goal of this new resource is to increase community-building services onsite at PPL housing to help residents build their social network, experience new family enrichment opportunities, work on employment goals, and acquire new life skills to help families have healthier and more self-sufficient lives. •Art making and exhibits at a future PPL housing site—Hamline Station—in Saint Paul engaged neighbors in expressions of the concept of ‘home,’ transforming a vacant corner on the Green Line corridor. PPL was awarded an arts organizer from Irrigate, an initiative of Springboard for the Arts, Twin Cities LISC, and the City of Saint Paul. Through art, neighbors built connections and learned about our 108unit project, which is scheduled to open in 2015. 5 Stable housing and second chances “The apartment was new, and she was new too.” 6 A flood of memories came back when PPL staff Raho Warsame got the call that Crystal had come to see her. She remembered the young woman who left PPL housing years before, mixed up in difficult circumstances and acquaintances that didn’t have her best interest in mind. “People took advantage of her nice heart,” Raho said. “As she was leaving, I told her that she wasn’t a bad person, but in a bad situation. I don’t think anyone ever told her she could change.” “Something in Raho’s heart saw that I was a better person than what I was back then,” Crystal remembers. “For her to see me and hardly know me was amazing.” Before reapplying for PPL housing, Crystal worked to resolve outstanding rental issues, proving to be reliable, punctual, and dedicated to her fresh start. The only hurdle left was waiting for an available unit. The next twist of fate amazed them both. Raho went to the front desk to meet the woman from years ago and was surprised by what she saw. “The apartment that was available,” Raho recalls with a smile, “was the place she used to live. But we had just finished renovations— it was new! The apartment was new, and Crystal was new too.” “I was looking for the person I knew,” Raho remembers, “but she was completely different. She told me, ‘Raho I’ve changed, and I’m here, and I would like to come back to PPL.’” “I was really excited,” Crystal said. “It’s been a fresh start for me. I’ve done bad in life, and now I’m going to do good in life, for the rest of my life.” Open doors to career paths Tiffany was working two part-time jobs to support her family but wanted more: she wanted a career. With no direct experience in the fields she wanted to work in, Tiffany found her way to PPL for our Train to Work in Banking program. She wanted to make the most of the chance it represented. “From the day I was accepted into the program, my mind was set that I was going to utilize this opportunity to get my foot in the door for the start of a career,” she said. With her direction settled, Tiffany took advantage of the computer and professional training, bank tours from local business partners, and resume and interview practice that the program offered. She also received a referral to acquire work clothing and financial literacy courses to help keep personal finances in order. Tiffany felt prepared to continue the hard work of landing the job. “The PPL staff and program give you all the tools needed to obtain your goals. The rest is really up to you. What are you willing to do for you? I was willing to do whatever I had to do to land a banking job at the end of the program.” Tiffany’s work paid off: she’s now a personal banker and has been for over a year. “I am a career woman,” Tiffany said, “and a true testimony that PPL has helped me help myself.” “My mind was set that I was going to utilize this opportunity to start a career.” 7 Services that restore self-reliance Personal tragedy left James in and out of homelessness, chemically dependent, and struggling to find any direction in his life. After entering a treatment facility, a clear goal and purpose began to drive him. “When I got to PPL, I felt alive.” “I have a daughter who only has me,” James said. “I had to get myself together.” James came to the PPL New Foundations Program after completing treatment. This gave him and his daughter a stable place to live with support services to help the family succeed. “When I got to PPL, I felt alive,” James said. “I felt more secure. I had a roof over my head… PPL is giving me the time to do what I need to do to get back to self-sufficiency.” 8 PPL staff helped James find a preschool for his daughter and gain the confidence and tools he needed to re-enter the workforce. “They had every resource that I needed: parenting classes, work readiness classes, all these classes!” James said. “Being able to have a home and resources like the PPL programs means the world to me.” James’ newfound positivity has impressed old friends who notice his transformation. It’s also helped him at his new job, where he’s constantly gaining more responsibilities. “I’m really proud of what I’ve been able to do. I’m proud to be back in the workforce and be active in the community. I’m proud to support myself and my daughter. I feel reborn, like I have another chance at life.” Youth programs with lasting impact Look no further than a game of soccer during a PPL afterschool youth program to see a young leader being born. Kevin, a sixth grader at Homework ‘n’ Hoops, forgoes scoring goals himself in favor of empowering other teammates. He huddles his team together, coaches them through plays, and works to give others opportunities to score and succeed. While soccer has become an avenue to make an impact on his peers, it’s also a way to help him improve academically. Kevin came to PPL for help with his reading and math homework. As an avid soccer player, he knows he must work hard to accomplish his goals, both on and off the field. With the help of tutors at PPL, Kevin has applied this work ethic to his schoolwork and is finding success. with her homework, playing the same games, even completing some of the same handouts that help develop reading and math skills. “Homework ‘n’ Hoops really made an impact on me,” Natalie said. “I’m happy to return the favor to the people who motivated me and helped me succeed.” Natalie remembers the help and care of the tutor she once worked with and jumped at the chance to volunteer. She also hopes to inspire future volunteers. “I would be ecstatic if someone like Kevin came back to help when they’re older,” Natalie said. “It would keep the continuity of the program in this community, and show how much it really works.” “I’m happy to return the favor to the people who motivated me and helped me succeed.” Kevin’s tutor Natalie knows how valuable the help at PPL can be. She was once a participant at Homework ‘n’ Hoops years ago, getting help 9 Your Support Hard at Work Charitable giving is critical to the work of PPL. Every day with your support, individuals and families have stable housing, kids are ready for kindergarten and beyond, disadvantaged jobseekers get the skills and confidence they need to get and stay on a career pathway, and our whole community is becoming more vibrant and strong. PPL keeps administrative costs low at just 9% of our consolidated budget, dedicating resources to our programs that create life-changing opportunities. Know that with your support, you are a part of that change. Thank you! PPL, Inc.
