New York State
Catholic Conference
The Official Voice of the Catholic Church in the Empire State
Statement of the Bishops of New York State on
the abortion expansion bill
Following is a statement of Timothy Cardinal Dolan and the Bishops of New York State:
We are profoundly distressed by the introduction of a bill in New York State today that would ease restrictions in state
law on late-term abortion and runs the serious risk of broadly expanding abortion access at all stages of gestation. This
legislation would add a broad and undefined “health” exception for late-term abortion and would repeal the portion
of the penal law that governs abortion policy, opening the door for non-doctors to perform abortions and potentially
decriminalizing even forced or coerced abortions. In addition, we find the conscience protection in the bill to be vague
and insufficient, and we are concerned about the religious liberty of our health facilities. While the bill’s proponents
say it will simply “codify” federal law, it is selective in its codification. Nowhere does it address the portions of federal
laws that limit abortion, such as the ban on taxpayer funding, the ban on partial birth abortion or protections for
unborn victims of violence.
As the pastors of more than 7.2 million Catholic New Yorkers, we fully oppose this measure, and urge all our faithful
people to do the same, vigorously and unapologetically. We invite all women and men of good will to join in this effort
and defeat this serious attempt to expand abortion availability in our state and to codify the most radical abortion
proposals of any state in the nation.
We support the first nine points in the Governor’s agenda that enhance the true dignity of women. We commit
ourselves to examining those proposals and working with the legislature on any and all efforts that help guarantee
real equity for all women and men. Our position on these issues will be consistent with all the efforts of the Catholic
Church throughout the world to enhance the dignity of women. The direct taking of the life of a child in the womb in
no way enhances a woman’s dignity.
Instead of expanding abortion and making abortions even more prevalent, we would like to protect both the woman
and the child in the womb. In New York, where one in every three pregnancies ends in abortion (and upwards of 6 in
10 in certain communities), it is clear that we as a state have lost sight of that child’s dignity. We pledge all our efforts
to defeat this proposal. We call on all pro-life New Yorkers to stand together with us and with all the leadership in
Albany who share our conviction that we have no need for such a bill to become law. We need instead to enhance and
promote the life and dignity of all human beings from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death.
For more information, including how to take action to oppose any bill that would increase abortion in New York,
please visit the New York State Catholic Conference website, www.nyscatholic.org.

spread the Good News of Christ’s Resurrection with others.

five-year assignment in our parish
and moves on to St. Matthew’s in Dix Hills.
Father Sikorski will celebrate the

Reception to follow in the Marian Room.
St. Mary’s welcomes
Father Christopher Costigan
as our new Associate Pastor
who arrives on

from his first assignment at
St. Bernard’s in Levittown.
Faith Formation | Grades 1-8
Our congratulations to the 198 young people who accepted God’s call to be His disciples and were
confirmed as Catholics by Bishop Dunne. May the Holy Spirit continue to enlighten and inspire
them. We adults know how difficult it can be to make time for prayer and to live a virtuous life. Please
pray for these young Catholics and their families. We hope that they will always put God first in their
lives and use their talents to serve God and others.
Re-Registration for 2013-2014 - You can download a re-registration form from the St. Mary’s
website at www.stmary.ws. Scroll to Religious Education and then to Registration Forms. Please
provide us with your current e-mail address on the form for other correspondence.
Families new to our program - especially those with children entering FIRST GRADE during
the 2013-2014 school year, please come to the Faith Formation Office (lower level of the
Church) to fill out the necessary forms or call us at 627-4028 concerning the forms that can be
downloaded from our website. We will need a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate. Please be aware that two years
of Religious Formation are required before a child may receive First Eucharist or Confirmation.
About 200 of our 600 families re-registered by June 3rd. Those students are being placed in classes by date of registration.
If you have not re-registered, please do so as soon as possible. Our office closes when school ends.
We usually have a total of 25 classes on each Tuesday and Thursday. Right now, we have 11 catechists
(teachers) for Tuesday and 16 catechists for Thursday. There are 30 classes on Monday night and
we have 18 catechists for those classes so far. Therefore, we are in need of more adult volunteers to
teach. If you make the commitment to teach now, we can help you to prepare during the summer.
Together we can give our children an opportunity to grow in their prayer life, knowledge of God, and
understanding of how to live as a follower of Christ. You may be the person that God is calling to
witness to His love by teaching our young Catholics. Please contact Lorraine Czarniak at 627-4028.

Summer Food Pantry
Every year food pantry donations drop dramatically during the summer months.
Hopefully, we will be able to collect enough food and toiletries to get us through the summer. Many of the
children who participate in the free breakfast and lunch programs in school will be home for the summer,
and the demand on our food pantry will increase. We greatly appreciate any donations that you may be
able to provide. The following is a list of items that we need at this time:
Peanut Butter/Jelly
Chef Boyardee
Baked Beans
Juice/Juice Packs
Crackers
Rice
Tuna Fish
Cereal
Canned Fruit
Instant Potatoes
Snacks
Cake Mix
In lieu of shopping for any of these items, a King Kullen gift card will also help us to provide families with the
resources to buy everyday perishable items. Donations may be left in the food baskets located in the north and south
lobbies of the Church or brought to the Parish Social Ministry office located on the ground floor level of the convent.
Thank you for your continued support and generosity!

Lighthouse Catholic Media CD of the Week: The Holy Eucharist
According to Fr. William Casey, Superior General of the Fathers of Mercy, “We are living
at the time of the greatest loss of faith in the 2000-year history of the Catholic Church.”
Discover how faith in the Real Presence of Jesus can remedy this as Fr. Casey explains and
defends the Catholic Eucharistic doctrine and encourages us to pray before the Blessed
Sacrament to help us grow spiritually.
Parishioner Comments:
“Great! This has given me the words I need to explain the Eucharist to those who have fallen away
because they don’t understand.”
“This helps me to reflect during Mass more on the reason I am in church and gives me such love for the Eucharist. I want to learn
more!”
“I love this CD! It was so informative and so helpful for me! I understand so much more about the Most Holy Eucharist. Thanks
so much! I will be buying more CDs!”
This CD and others are available in the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk located in the south vestibule of the Church.
