One day the band is sharing the stage with Beyoncé – or at least a cutout of Beyoncé – and the next day, each member – vocalist/guitarist Forrest Kline, keyboardist Jesse Kurvink, bassist Marcus Cole and drummer Chris Profeta – is dressed up as a different piece of fruit. With all the energy and intensity of Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch – minus all that pesky Scientology stuff about people living in volcanoes – Hellogoodbye have spent the last two years Kuva tulossa perfecting their unbridled live show and booty-shaking jams, which culminate in the release of their debut album Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!. However, when the band formed, there weren’t really any zombies or aliens or vampires or dinosaurs, and don’t get us started on the exclamation points. “I started recording really horrible midi music on my PC in my bedroom,” remembers Kline, who just so happened to be working for Drive-Thru Records at the time of his tinkering. “The rhythm was all jittery because my computer sucked and the vocals were all soft cause my parents were sleeping upstairs while I recorded them.” Writing songs for friends and girls he wanted to woo, Kline kept the material to himself never sending demos to any labels. A mutual friend shared the songs with Drive-Thru owners Richard Reines and Stefanie Reines and they flipped out! With the unconditional support of Drive-Thru and after hook-up with Kurvink, Hellogoodbye was born. Well, sort of. “We went through a few drummers and a few bass players until we found Marcus, who was already friends with Jesse, and later Chris, who was raised by gorillas deep in the Congo.” After the band hoofed it out of Central Africa, they got to work recording their self-titled EP, which spawned the David Hasselhoff fave and MTV2 choice-cut “Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn.” Although initially meant to be free, available at shows and on the band’s web site, the EP flew off the digital shelves faster than you can Google “Paris Hilton + sex tape.” Scoring 750,000 downloads, selling nearly 105,000 copies and eventually winning MTV2’s Dew Circuit Breakout contest, the band had no choice but to give the fans more of what they wanted—Hellogoodbye. In addition to touring the country for the next two years with bands like All American Rejects, Motion City Soundtrack and the Academy Is…, Hellogoodbye started headlining—and selling out—venues and practically had to be surgically removed from the road in order to get back in the studio. Luckily, it didn’t leave a scar. For Hellogoodbye’s long-awaited debut album, Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!, the Boeing MD-11 Entertainment band enlisted the help of Matt Mahaffey, singer/ songwriter/multi-instrumentalist of the powerpop band Self, turn-table master on albums by Pink and Smash Mouth, member of Beck’s backup band and personal musical hero of Kline. The Southern California quartet settled into Mahaffey’s home studio and started going through which songs would make the final cut, which was a foreign experience for Kline, who was used to producing all the band’s music. “It was definitely a different process and a weird experience,” says Kline of collaborating with an outside producer. “But when I look back on recording, I think that [Mahaffey] brought a lot of really cool stuff [to the album] and a lot of my favorite parts are the ones that he did.” The eleven tracks that ended up making it onto Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! are a collection of songs that work together to create a non-stop, radtastic party mix, but separate them apart, and no two songs are alike. “I never really thought of the record as a record,” admits Kline. “I just thought of this song as a song and that song as a song. For different songs, I definitely had different goals for the sound. Part of what I like about Self and other bands is that there isn’t one drum sound, one guitar sound and one vibe. Every song’s is an entirely different production. That was the goal—that each song was approached individually. I didn’t want it to sound all over the place but I wanted each song to be its own song and have its own sound.” 15 Mission accomplished. From the opening beats of the new New Wave powerhouse “All Of My Love” to the tender plucking and pining of “Oh, It Is Love” Hellogoodbye have created the perfect soundtrack to any hot and heavy make-out or even something more personal. “Mostly, [the songs on Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! are] about my girlfriend or someone who did or didn’t use to be my girlfriend,” reveals Kline. “I guess you could say it’s the soundtrack to being my girlfriend.” Sorry, ladies. He’s taken. The future for Hellogoodbye is so bright, you might want to wear shades—or at least a sun block with a high SPF. “We have always just done whatever we wanted to and whatever was funny to us and so far it’s worked out okay, so we’ll probably stick to that,” explains Kurvink. “No one wants to be famous. Nobody wants to tour forever. We want to do this for as long as we can and then get married to our girlfriends and have puppies and kids and live happily ever.” Hellogoodbye are currently on a nation-wide headlining tour. Sudoku is the puzzle phenomenon from Japan, a game that looks like a math problem, but is in fact a twisting puzzler. The rules are simple: start with a grid consisting of nine three-by-three squares in which some of the numbers are already supplied. Fill in the blank squares so that each column, row, and three-by-three grid contains a number from 1 to 9 with none repeated. Airbus A340-300 Entertainment 37 Actor Biography He is one of the most intense actors on the Hollywood scene – one of the guys everyone wants to work with, but does so warily. Just as his movie career has swung back and forth from ‘nice guy’ roles to some of the screen’s most lasting psychopaths, Russell Crowe’s personality is a shifting Russell Crowe landscape of emotions. He is a paradox – always preceded by contrasting stories of his kindness and extreme callousness. What is never in question however, is his talent. Although he was raised in Australia from the age of 4 onward, Crowe was actually born in New Zealand on April 7th, 1964. His parents, Alex and Jocelyn, worked as innkeepers and caterers for the most part. The family lived a very bohemian lifestyle, as they were constantly on the move. Russell did not enjoy a permanent home until the age of fourteen. His folks often worked on movie and television sets, catering food. Before long, a young Russell was doing walk-ons and bit parts in productions. When he hit his teen years though, it was not acting which drove Crowe, but rather music. He fancied himself a rock musician, and after assuming the identity of Russ Le Roc, set about making name of himself. While not playing music, he worked part time as a waiter and bartender. Eventually, Crowe would give up on his Russ Le Roc persona. Instead, he formed a new rock group with some friends which they dubbed Roman Antix, which later evolved into 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Russell still plays in the band when he has time off. In 1990, Crowe finally decided to give acting another try and met with immediate success. He was a natural who drew comparisons to Brando and James Dean. Within two years of making his acting debut, he had already made eight films and earned two awards from Australia’s Film Institute. The first was a Best Supporting Actor award for the film Proof, and the second was for Best Actor for the film Romper Stomper. The latter film, about a sadistic Nazi skinhead, caused a controversial sensation largely due to the stark and gritty realism of Crowe’s portrayal. He atoned somewhat by following it up with a sensitive and understated role in The Sum of Us as the gay son of a good-natured Australian man reaching middle-age. Stateside, Russell made his debut in Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead. Sharon Stone had been so impressed with the man from down under’s role in Romper Stomper that she had petitioned loudly for him to be cast. Stone got her way and Russell landed the role of a former gunslinger cum preacher. Ironically, he easily outshone the lead actress (not to mention Leonardo DiCaprio) and was regarded as the only positive aspect of the film. Next up for Crowe was another sadistic turn, this time as a computer generated killer who contains within him the psychological profiles of 183 of history’s worst serial killers, in the film Virtuosity. Co-starring Denzel Washington, the film was hardly the best that either man had to offer. Crowe was finally given his opportunity to demonstrate to America the awesome talent that so far only Australians and select critics knew about, in the film L.A. Confidential. The gritty crime movie, set in the 1950s, captivated audiences in 1997 and was overshadowed only by one other film that year (something about a big boat). The ‘anti-Titanic’, the film was embraced by indie fans and film connoisseurs. Mostly everyone found Russell Crowe’s portrayal of the thug-like Detective Bud White impossible to ignore. In 1999 Crowe stars in a Disney movie named Mystery, Alaska and in The Insider. For this movie he is nominated for an Oscar but Kevin Spacey takes the Best Actor for his performances in American beauty. In 2000 Crowe stars in Gladiator, a great film from director Ridley Scott. 38 On the personal side, Crowe remains a rather reclusive personality. He has said that he would only live in L.A. if certain conditions were met, namely: “if Australia and New Zealand were swallowed up by a huge tidal wave, if there was a bubonic plague in Europe, and if the continent of Africa disappeared from some Martian attack.” Crowe prefers to remain in Australia, returning there whenever he’s not working. A straightforward and downright blunt individual, he has no time for the pretense and smoke and mirrors of Hollywood. Crowe has become notorious for his refusal to conform to Hollywood life and makes a point of being as in-your-face about it as possible. He has walked out of interviews (most infamously one with the New York Post after claiming he was bored), often purposefully blows cigarette smoke in people’s faces and hurls obscenities at the slightest provocation. Crowe is often known for his frequent clashes with directors during filming. But despite his erratic, rude and abrasive behavior, he has many fans amongst Hollywood’s elite – including Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and many directors still want to work with him. The reason for this is that his talent is undeniable. Whenever Russell Crowe graces the screen, he leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.
