president’s message
W
e wrap up another year,
one with lots of excitement and challenges and
growth. A year in which we saw
many beautiful Hanoverians shine
and also sell in larger numbers than
prior years.
Pretty soon we will be in Houston
giving out AHS awards during the
annual meeting, to owners of the
best performing Hanoverians in our
breeding programs. I hope you can
join us in that celebration with fellow breeders, riders and Hanoverian
enthusiasts. It is promising to be a
very fun couple of days filled with
education, information and a Grand
Prix at the Great South West
Equestrian
Center.
Rebecca
Pennington is our host. Rebecca
hosted a meeting 10 years ago and
got Dr. Wilkens to do the Do Si Do,
square dancing night at the awards
banquet, I will say no more.
Speaking of awards, a horse owned
by our very own past president Doug
Leatherdale and his wife Louise was
the recipient of a rarely given title
the end of last year. Their highly
successful sire Damsey (Dressage
Royal-Ria Grande/Ritual) was
awarded the title FRH by the
Association
for
Promoting
Competing Hanoverians. FRH is
not an easily earned title anyway but
this was unique because the title had
never before been given to a competition horse owned by an American.
It is a big deal! I spoke with Doug
afterwards as he was recuperating
from a successful back surgery and
an eventful end of the year. We hope
to see the Leatherdales in Houston
so they can share some of their
excitement with us.
A week after the Houston AHS
meeting on February 14th the
Stallion Service Auction organized
by Board member Nancy Connolly
will come to a close. Owners of

about 50 Hanoverian stallions offer
donated breedings for you to bid on.
Last year we had server problems
and that really messed things up.
Although no one but the server was
to blame for this poorly timed failure, all we could do was apologize
and go on as good as possible. The
stress was hard on Sandy Werkheiser
who graciously has done these auctions for us on-line from the inception of internet auctions. We needed
to do something different to re-gain
the trust of the many disappointed
stallion owners and bidders. This
year we switched gears and decided
to go with a professional auction
company that is used to bidding volume. The auction is run by
Tim Jennings and his internet
Sporthorse auction company
(SportHorseAuctions.com). He has
more internet auction experience
than anybody so bidders, bring it on!
The stallions got some great exposure through the Jennings’s auction
company from emails and internet
banners. I wish you all good luck
and many successful bids.
Seven stallions have been added as
AHS Elite stallions for 2014.
Sternlicht GGF (Soliman de Hus EM Rhapsody GGF/Rascalino), a
2010 black Hanoverian stallion, was
approved at the Hilltop Farm licensing, last summer. He was bred by
Rachel Ehrlich, Greengate Farm,
Mass., and is owned by Hilltop Farm,
Colora, Md.
Four stallions were approved in
Oklahoma at the 2013 Silver Creek
70-Day Performance Test site, our
last inspection for the year. Judges
Meg Williams, George Walker and
Dr. Ludwig Christmann braved the
very cold weather to inspect eligible
stallions. It was so cold that the final
day of the cross country had to be
canceled. AHS presence was especially noticeable and appreciated as
several organizations including
Oldenburg Verband and ISR/
Oldenburg NA did not attend the
finals this time around.
The stallions were Checkmate,
Dheputy, Royal Reflection HU and
San City. Checkmate (Check In Rio Zeus/Zeus) is a 2009 imported
chestnut Oldenburg stallion. Bred
by Werner Kruse, he is owned by
Jennifer and Armin Arnoldt,
Dreamscape Farm, Langley, British
Columbia. Dheputy (Dauphin - EM
Rhussia/Rotspon) is a 2009 bay
Oldenburg stallion bred and owned
by Mo Swanson, Rolling Stone Farm,
Slatington, Pa. Royal Reflection HU
(Galant du Serein - EM Rohmanie/
Rohdiamant) is a chestnut 2009
RPSI stallion bred and owned by
Anne Sparks, Horses Unlimited,
Albuquerque, N.M. San City (San
Remo - SPS Bounty/Bolero) is a
2006 black Hanoverian stallion
owned by Linda Crabtree, Dream
Acres Sport Horses, Ponce De Leon,
Fla. San City was approved through
his performance in eventing.
Congratulations to all!
The highest scoring jumper of the
test could not be considered for
Hanoverian license because of a
lacking pedigree on the dam side.
Anne Spark’s stallion Gallant
Reflection HU was the overall test’s
Reserve Champion, congratulations
Anne with that great result!!
Two stallions were imported to the
USA that were licensed by the
German Hanoverian Verband and
have been activated with the AHS.
Diamo Gold (Dimaggio - Elfe/Ex
Libris), a 2007 bay Oldenburg stal-4

previously owned by Gestüt

The Hanoverian editorial section in
Warmbloods Today magazine is coming up soon. Last year our
Hanoverian section was the largest
breed type section the magazine had
done to date and got very good
responses. Make sure to submit
your ads by the deadline so you can
be part of this great Hanoverian
issue again. Talking about advertising, our next AHS magazine will be
In the Ribbons
our largest and full color print issue
for the year. A good one to advertise
in!
The AHS budget year has been
changed. Instead of an OctoberSeptember year we will now adhere
to the regular calendar year as the
AHS budget year. This will make the
finances more logical because ever
since we started a fall inspection
tour the financial year ended in
between the summer and fall tour. It
was not always clear how to allocate
the tour income and expenses as
they often crossed over. This year at
the Annual meeting a board
approved balanced 2014 budget
from January-December will be presented for approval by the membership.
We have a very good new resource
section on the AHS www.hanoverian.org website. Born out of a need
identified by the Breeders’ Bssistance
Committee, to help breeders do
research and make informed breeding decisions. This was developed by
Kate Palmquist, chair of the education committee. It is a very comprehensive resource for Hanoverian
breeders. You can find it under
‘Programs and Resources’.
See you in Houston! n
Sincerely,
Edgar Schutte

Willow CBF (Widmark-EM Cassie/Cordoba)
At the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlboro, Md.,
Willow CBF was named Champion of the Future Hunter Mares
division which was sponsored by Penelope Ayres and
Ravenswood Farm. Willow and rider Phillip Cillis, who took
the reins for owner Julie Hancock, placed first, fourth, and
fifth over fences and was second under saddle.
jennifer wood media, inc.
The 2008 chestnut Hanoverian mare was bred by Meg
Williams, Oakwood Farm, Lawrenceburg, Ind. Cillis and
Willow CBF traveled across the United States, from San
Diego, California to Upper Marlboro, Maryland, to claim this
victory.
Cillis and Hancock found Willow CBF, a five-year-old
Hanoverian mare by Widmark, in November at a dressage
barn and started in the Pre-Green Hunters in April. “She just
moved really well. We had seen her free jump, and she
jumped really well and soft and nice,” Cillis remembered.
“She had such a great temperament and we were hoping
she’d make up to an amateur horse, but already as a PreGreen horse she’s also doing the low Amateurs with Julie.
She’s got the best brain.” While Cillis worked for Hap Hansen
for 20 years and had brought equitation riders to Capital
Challenge before, it had been “years and years” since he
showed here last. “We had a fun one and we thought, ‘Let’s
do it!’” he said.

Senate Passes Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act
In January, the United States Senate
passed, the Veterinary Medicine
Mobility Act (S. 1171), sponsored by
Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS). The bill
was passed unanimously without
amendment and has been sent to the
House of Representatives where it
awaits further action.
The Veterinary Medicine Mobility
Act amends the Controlled
Substances Act (CSA) to clarify that
veterinarians are allowed to transport, administer and dispense controlled substances and medications
outside of their registered offices and
hospitals. It would ensure equine

veterinarians have the ability provide
mobile or ambulatory services in the
field to the horse community.
The Drug Enforcement Administration
(DEA) recently changed its interpretation of provisions within the CSA
regarding what veterinarians may
carry with them and has stated it now
believes it is illegal for veterinarians to
transport controlled substances and
medications for use outside of their
registered locations, such as an animal
hospital.
Equine veterinarians often provide
mobile services and treat horses at
farms, training facilities, horse
shows, or racetracks. In many cases it
is not possible for owners to bring
their horses to a clinic or hospital.
For this reason, veterinarians have
for years carried any medications
they may have needed with them
secured in their vehicle. However,
their ability to do this and provide
care to horses in the field is now in
jeopardy.
This legislation would allow vets to
continue to treat horses as they
always have. The AHC supports this
bill and hopes the House will pass
the bill quickly. n

PORTOFINO (1983-2013)
(Paradox I-SPS Minouche, 1983, 16.1 H, Westfalen)
Reserve Champion of his 100-Day Test in Warendorf, Germany,
Portofino stood for many years at the prestigious Westphalian
National Stud in Muenster, Germany. Portofino produced two
approved and licensed sons in Germany and numerous States
Premium and Main Studbrook mares. After being imported to the
U.S., Portofino continued to produce winners. His offspring won
“Get of Sire” classes at recognized breed shows. His offspring also
won classes in dressage shows on both U.S. coasts.
Portofino in Warendorf, Germany
Portofino achieved extremely high scores and was the Reserve
Champion upon completion of his Performance Test in Wardendorf
in 1986. In 1994, Portofino was recognized as one of the top five producing sporthorse stallions in Germany for his age group. His offspring reflected the quality of their sire-- he produced 2 approved
sons, numerous States Premium mares, and many successful competition offspring in the disciplines of dressage and show jumping.
Portofino was an action trotter in Germany and was presented annually at the Warendorf Stallion Parade. He had impeccable bloodlines,
only his stem from both Westphalian and Hanoverian lineage. His
sire Paradox I was honored with a life size bronze statue in the center
of the Westphalian State Stud in Warendorf.

2013 North American Stallion Testing Pronounces
Winner During Epic Storm, Top-American-Bred
Gallant Reflection HU Named Reserve Champion
by amy borgman
The 2013 North American Stallion
Testing, Broken Arrow, Okla., will go
down in the record books as one of
the largest, and most challenging,
since Silver Creek Farms began hosting and producing the event seven
years ago at their top-notch facility
outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. A collection of stallions bred in Germany,
Austria, Czechoslovakia, Canada and
the United States were trained, tested
and judged by a panel during their
stay in the Sooner State. The winner
of the 70-Day Test, Canadian-bred
Fabian DSF (Freestyle x Hierarch),
claimed top honors with exceptional
marks for rideability. The Reserve
Championship went to Horses
Unlimited’s Gallant Reflection HU
(Galant du Serein x Rohdiamant).
The bright chestnut was the topplaced American-bred, with an
impressive fourth place in the jumping index and a very close second in
rideability index.
During the testing, candidates were
evaluated on a series of universal
criteria including gaits, jumping,
rideability and character. This process allows stallions to show their
versatility without emphasizing any
one style or discipline. They received
marks from multiple judges during
both the “training phase” and “test
phase” of the event. The 70-Day Test
began with a veterinary inspection
of a large group of eighteen stallions,
ages 4-8 years, on the 27th of
September. Two ponies and a threeyear-old joined the group on the 7th
of November for the 30-Day Test
portion of the event. The training
phase commenced during the pleas-
ant falls days of western Oklahoma.
By the time the final scores were
given, one of the most difficult winter storms in recent memory had
taken ahold of the entire region. The
Governor of Oklahoma, Mary Fallin,
declared a state of emergency and
traffic across many surrounding
states came to a standstill.
A major storm, rider injuries, nor a
series of other challenges deterred
the team from completing their goal
and awarding final marks to the
twenty-one contestants. “This is the
first time we had a perfect finish. All
of the stallions that were presented
completed their testing,” explained
Summer Stoffel, owner of Silver
Creek Farms. She credits not only
the tenacious equines, but also a
dedicated staff, guest riders and
judges, Barbara Sikkink and training
director Harald Hoffmann for
achieving this milestone. Stoffel,
herself a breeder of a 70-Day Test
winner, is passionate about giving
stallion owners in North America a
path to evaluate their horses. Anne
Sparks, owner and breeder of Gallant
Reflection HU, was very complementary of the level of commitment
Stoffel’s team brought to the testing.
“Summer was there for us as owners
during the entire process and was
willing to do whatever was needed to
help our horses be successful,”
explained Sparks.

Education and mentorship in the
industry is a priority for both Stoffel
and Sparks. Both women are quick to
share their experience with others seeking to test and license stallions in North
America. “ I sent another homebred
through the 70-Day Test in 2009.
Galante HU (Galant du Serein x Landor
S) is now fully licensed and a grand
prix showjumper. That experience
taught me the importance of correct
preparation of your stallion for testing.” Building on the knowledge gained
several years ago, Sparks decided to
send her Zweibrucker colt to Christian
Baier of Southern Blues Equestrian in
Memphis, Tennessee. Originally from
Tranås in southern Sweden, Baier is a
well-seasoned stallion handler and
trainer. He and Sparks partnered successfully on other occasions making the
choice easy for Gallant Reflection’s
breeder. Baier was the handler of Pikko
del Cerro HU during his 2009 Dressage
at Devon Stallion Championship, as
well as his 2011 American Hanoverian

“Reefer”, as he is affectionately called,
arrived at the Tennessee Farm in
February. During the following months
the colt would learn the basics and prepare for the rigors of a 70-Day Test. Mr.
Baier spent the first three months
focused on rhythm in all three gaits.
“Reefer has huge gaits so I had to be
patient as he gained the strength and
balance needed to carry himself.” An
emphasis on these principles is key to
developing a horse’s natural movement. “Once he had the strength, all the
work was very easy for him. He is
extremely straightforward and an absolute gentleman around other horses,”
remarked Baier. During the fourth
month, the training emphasis became
suppleness and an introduction to light
jumping. The remainder of preparation time was spent building more
rhythm, suppleness and strength. Baier
fondly recalls Reefer’s positive attitude
and cooperative nature both under
saddle and in the stable. “I delivered
him to Oklahoma and was looking for
a positive outcome based on what he
showed to me during his time at my


H a n o v e r i a n
farm. I’m so happy Reefer was named
Reserve Champion, he is an excellent
horse.”
Good basics and admirable character
were also key qualities in the winner.
Fabian DSF was bred in Canada by
Jennifer and Armin Arnoldt, and prepared for the test by his owner Martha
Diaz at her Red Wind Farm in El Paso,
Texas. Diaz has a small training business and breeds two of her own mares
each year. She also trains and shows the
Horses Unlimited mare Gitana HU,
half-sister to Gallant Reflection HU.
Diaz is experienced with young horses
and was considering a new project
when she purchased him on-line as a
yearling. “I wanted a horse to bring up
the levels. I was also looking for something I could use to live cover my own
mares without having to travel several
hours to do artificial insemination,”
explained Diaz. When asked about her
expectations for the 70-Day Test, Diaz
was hopeful and pragmatic. “I knew
early on that Fabian was so smart,
smart as a whip,” she described. “During
the breaking process he was very kind
and I hoped he would do well in rideability.” Fabian DSF did her proud by
besting the field with the highest overall score in that category.
Fabian DSF will return to Diaz’s farm
and begin his career as her dressage
mount. “My plans for him are primarily focused on performance. He’s a blast
to ride. He’s always looking for you to
tell him what you want him to do.”
Diaz also plans to breed her mares, and
offer some breedings to outside mares.
“Winning was a complete surprise. My
only hope was that he would score a 90
or higher so that he was licensed for my
mares.” Diaz has two weanlings by
Fabian DSF and is expecting two more
foals next spring.
Anne Sparks, owner of Horses
Unlimited, is equally as enthusiastic
about her four-year-old stallion and
talks about him with much veneration.
“Since Reefer was young, I knew he was
special. When I decide to leave a colt
intact, I have to have great confidence
that they will be as good or better than
their father.” The versatile New
Mexican-bred colt certainly has a high
standard to live up to. His sire, Galant
du Serein, was a successful dressage
mount for Hubertus Schmidt before
being bought by Horses Unlimited and
eventually making appearances in the
Olympics, World Equestrian Games
and FEI World Cup Finals. “Gallant
Reflection has always been a quick
learner and his movement very natural.
He has “schwung” and even though he
isn’t the tallest horse, his gaits are very
powerful. His has presence and exceptional elasticity and hang time in the
air,” remarked Sparks. Gallant
Reflection HU received the top mark of
10 for character as well as 9’s for temperament, constitution and willingness
to work. “Reefer will now move on to
the next stage in his life. He is licensed
with several registries, including the
RPSI and AHS and will be available for
limited breedings to outside mares.
“We will balance both his career as a
breeding and competition stallion
going forward,” explained Sparks.
Gallant Reflection HU will make the
voyage to Wellington, Florida at the
beginning of 2014. He will be partnered with Olympian Lisa Wilcox and
begin his dressage career. Sparks and
Wilcox successfully brought the Horses
Unlimited-bred stallion Pikko del
Cerro HU from National Young Horse
Champion to Grand Prix winner. They
are both enthusiastic about their next
collaboration. When asked about her
plans for her newest equine partner,
Wilcox commented, “I’m thrilled to
see him come to my program in Florida.
He is quite talented and feels like a second Cerro to me. I’m looking forward
to riding him in the Young Horse
Program this year and climbing the
dressage ladder.” n

“My Hanoverian” feature
From A Sale Horse to National Rankings
by caryn vesperman
For the third time, Shelly Reichart of
Lake Mills, Wis. was Grand Prix
Open Champion in the United States
Dressage Federation’s (USDF) AllBreeds awards for Hanoverian horses with her equine partner,
Welttaenser (Wolkenstein II-Wolga/
Windhuk). They were also named
the American Hanoverian Society’s
FEI Horse of the Year and ranked
17th in the USDF Grand Prix Open
Division.
Other achievements in 2013 for
Shelly and Welttaenser, whom she
fondly nicknamed “Wally,” included
placing first at Grand Prix in the
Open Division for Wisconsin’s largest USDF-affiliate, the Wisconsin
Dressage and Combined Training
Association, and qualifying to compete at the first annual United States
Dressage National Championships
at the Kentucky Horse Park, where
they placed sixth at Grand Prix.
“Wally has provided me with so
many opportunities on the international dressage scene, including
being ranked on the USEF’s Grand
Prix long list,” says Shelly. “I owe him
so much. He’s such a great partner.”
From a sale horse to her horse
Shelly bought Welttaenser in 2007
from Barb Center who had decided
she needed to take a break from
horses and spend time focusing on
her medical career and family,
including three children, all whom
were competitive swimmers at the
time. Initially Barb approached
Shelly to sell Wally for her. Shelly
quickly realized the Hanoverian
gelding’s potential and purchased

worked with Stephen Clarke (“O”

earned her final qualifying score for
her USDF Gold Medal. In 2012,
Shelly and Welttaenser were named
to the United States Equestrian
Federation’s High Performance

Welttaenser was imported as a yearling by Gerd Zuther for Meg

Meg’s

in
Lawrenceburg, Ind. He was accepted
at the Hanoverian stallion licensing,
but the 100-Day Stallion Test proved
a bit too testosterone-inducing for
the young stallion. Welttaenser was
brought home and gelded, and Meg
continued training him, bringing
him up the levels before selling him
to Barb Center.
Shelly’s journey
Shelly operates her training business
from her own facility, Paradigm

and Madison, Wis. She continues
her own riding education by working with Linda Zang, an FEI “O”

Shelly began riding at the age of four
and started competing when she was
seven. By 15-years-old, she had
decided dressage was her favorite
equestrian discipline. Over the
years, she has been a working student for Jayne Ayers, Michael Poulin
and George Williams. She also has
managed to fit in two university
degrees: a bachelor of science in
business administration and a master’s degree in management information systems.
Shelly has worked in the corporate
world for more than 15 years and, at
the same time, built Paradigm Farm
where she trains horses and riders in
dressage.
While Shelly believes Welttaenser
has a few more competitive years in
him, she also realizes she needs to
find an up-and-coming prospect to
help her reach her competitive goal
of representing the United States in
international competition.
“My dream is to be on a U.S. team,”
says Shelly. “I’d like another
Hanoverian, especially one that is
similar to Wally. He is an amazing
horse, with so much heart and personality. He tries very hard to make
me happy. I’ve had many offers for
him, but for now, he’s not going anywhere. He’s special to me in so many
ways. ” n

was a very special situation….yearling
and two-year-old full sibling fillies taking top honors in the same year at
Devon. Both fillies were prepared and

about her huge win in the Two-YearOld Fillies class of seventeen horses.
With the unapproachable score of
83%, she distanced herself by almost
seven percentage points from the second placed filly. Her sister Dianah
faced a class of twenty-one in the

nearly matched her older sister’s success. Dianah was second among yearling fillies. Both Dame Bella and
Dianah, therefore, qualified to advance

T
AHS members, we
were able to honor American-bred Hanoverians
competing in the Young Horse classes at Dressage
at Devon again this year. The All-American Hanoverian
Young Dressage Horse (AAHYDH) awards program was
established in 2008 and provides a total of $6000 of prize
money for $2000 in each of the three Young Horse classes—USEF Dressage Test for Four-Year-Olds, FEI Dressage
Test for Five-Year-Olds, and FEI Dressage Test for SixYear-Olds. To be eligible, the horse must by born and
bred in this country, by an American-owned sire, out of
an American-owned mare, and registered with the AHS.
The prize is split between the owner and the breeder.
Sponsors of the 2013 AAHYDH Awards were Paul Cohen,
Associations Underwriters, Inc. and Ziplow Horse
Insurance Agency, Westminster, Md.; Nancy Connolly,
HorsePower Farm Hanoverians, Vancouver, Wash.; Doug
and Shannon Langer, Maple Run Farm, Helenville, Wisc.;
Peg Lansing, Fleur de Lis Hanoverians, Prospect, Ky.; Jane

another Hanoverian, though not “All-American”. (On
Friday, Bellatesse topped the entire field of four-year-olds
with a score of 88.6%.) The fancy chestnut mare is owned

Bellatesse HTF. “She was purchased from Hilltop

colt foal of mine and used that money to purchase Bella. I had done extensive research, and
she comes from a very well-established and successful damline in Germany, especially her great

Schuler sent Bellatesse to trainer Nancy
Lewis-Stanton in Chardon, Ohio in
May of 2012 and her talents blossomed. She continues, “Bellatesse is
Reserve Champion of the four- and

a median score of 82%. She also is
ranked 20th in the U.S. for Training

Training Level. To date, in her fouryear-old year, she has won over 98% of
all the classes we have entered her in
and in the classes she has not won, she
never placed lower than third.”
Owners of Benefactor RRS Melinda
Walton with husband Larry Smith had
this to say about their journey to the
winner’s circle with their talented gelding, “Our world changed in August,
2000, when we purchased Heidekleid
from Dinah Babcock in Austin, Texas.
‘Heidi’ was four-years-old and in foal
to Sandro Hit (a horse we had never
heard of). It was love at first sight! We
had never thought of being in the
breeding business until Heidi came
into our lives. Heidi had a beautiful
Sandro Hit filly the following year and
we discovered the joy of working with
mares and foals. After researching
bloodlines and creating a business plan
for breeding, we bred Heidi to De Niro,
imitating the classic crossing of
Donnerhall and Rubenstein I and thus
began our breeding career.
“Our first foal, born in 2003, was a
chestnut colt we named Duvent. We
took Heidi and Duvent to an AHS foal
inspection at Sharon Garner’s Garner
Creek Farms in Cypress, Texas. Heidi
was the Champion non-Hanoverian
mare and entered into the Hanoverian
book. We have been registering foals
with the American Hanoverian Society
for the last ten years. Since Duvent,
Heidi has foaled six times, all sired by
Hanoverian approved stallions standing in the United States. Christian
Rogge, a neighbor of Sharon Garner’s
and an amazing horseman, had seen
Bonheur, a Brentano II stallion imported by Sharon, and thought he would
be an excellent match for a Prince
Thatch xx mare we were breeding.
Portiana produced two very athletic
foals, so we thought we’d try the cross
with Heidi and the result was
Benefactor RRS (Benny).
“Currently five years old, Benny has
exceeded our expectations largely due
to the talented rider, Silva Martin.
When we moved our Texas herd to
northern Virginia in 2010 to get out of 4

“Silva is convinced that Benny has
been here before! He certainly is an
old soul. He has an easy-going temperament and seems unflappable.
Silva thinks he internalizes his stress (a
good thing for riders) so extra care is
taken at competitions with treats,
attention, and hand-grazing. Silva’s
training program includes very limited
riding time in a ring, with the majority
of time hacking out through the countryside on the farm she shares with her
husband Boyd Martin, fording creeks,
and working up and down hillsides.
Benny is such a willing horse that it is
necessary to remember his young age
and not push him too hard. We are
fortunate to have a trainer who understands him and does not take advantage of his willingness.
“Since Benny’s success this year at
Dressage at Devon, Silva has ridden
him in two competitions, the 2013
Region 1 Championships in Lexington,
Virginia, where he was Second Level
Champion and First Level Reserve
Champion. She also competed him at
the 2013 BLM Championships in
Williamston, North Carolina, where
Benny won the BLM Championship at
Second Level, the BLM Championship
at First Level, and the High Point
Hanoverian Award at the show with
his Second Level score of over 77%.
Benny’s older sibling, Duvent, won the
Fourth Level Championship as well.
“Benny also has a younger sibling at
Silva’s named Danka Shoene RRS by
Donar Weiss GGF. At three years old,
‘Shoene’ is exhibiting the same wonderful temperament and talent of their
dam, Heidi. In fact, Heidi has a

Contucci colt at her side that looks like
a clone of Benny. There is no substitute for a fantastic mare.
Our advice to anyone who wants to
breed horses is to buy only the very
best mares who possess three good
gaits, have good conformation and a
wonderful temperament. Then spend
hours with the foals, handling them
every day and place them with good
trainers and owners. We usually have
one to three foals a year and keep them
until they are at least three or four
years old and have become solid citizens. Then we know we have done
something special.” n

Canadian-bred Mare Breaks Own Record for Highest Recorded USDF Median
Score - Ever! Canadian Breeders Named USDF Sporthorse Breeder of the Year
by susan smiley
The highest median score EVER recorded by a horse and rider
in the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) competitions
goes to a 100% Canadian production! Dreamcatcher Meadows
Ventures Ltd. (DMV), the Pemberton BC Hanoverian stud and
training center, are credited with breeding, raising, training
and competing the 17.2 hand high black beauty known as
Ballerina DMV (Ballettmeister-Dreaming/Dimaggio). She is
owned by another Canadian success story, Earl’s and Joey’s
restaurant founder, “Bus” Leroy Fuller and his wife Riki. Once
again George Morris, USDF president, will be presenting
Dreamcatcher Meadows with several Horse of the Year
(“HOY”) awards at the USDF Annual Gala Dinner to be held
in Lexington Kentucky in early December. Trained
and ridden by DMV coach John Dingle, Ballerina
DMV retains the two prestigious champion titles for a
second consecutive year: HOY Material Mare 4/5 Year
Old and Sunshine Perpetual Tropy recipient for overall highest Materiale score, earned with a whopping
89% median, breaking the USDF all-time record
(since recording commenced in 1974) she set last year
at 88.5% (“Materiale” competitions are conducted by
specially qualified young horse judges to evaluate
three-, four- and five-year-old horses against the
“ideal”). Ballerina DMV is also USDF Region 6
Reserve Champion Sporthorse Mature Mare and
third for the same category nationally; and finally
sixth for Federation Equestrian International (FEI)
five-year-olds.
When asked how he felt about such phenomenal
results for the third consecutive year, owner Bus Fuller
commented: “Obviously my wife and I are thrilled
with this news, but mostly we are happy for John and
Jill – their commitment and the hours they log are
unbelievable and I hope these results make people
aware they don’t have to go to Europe to find a first
class horse. They have many young horses for sale,
most related to our Ballerina – Ballerina had a handsome black colt this year from their embryo transfer
program, sired by resident stallion Windfall. To top it
off, imagine at my age (84) next year I am expecting
twins!”
Dreamcatcher Meadows is overwhelmed and delighted to be named 2013 USDF Sporthorse Breeder of the
Year. The USDF determines this prestigious title based
on the USDF Sport Horse Breeding HOY final placings of a breeder’s top scoring five homebred horses.

Genay Vaughn and her 12-year-old
Hanoverian stallion Donarweiss
GGF won the 2013 Brentina Cup
Reserve Championship at the United
States Dressage Festival of
Champions presented by the Dutta
Corporation at the Kentucky Horse
Park in October. The Brentina Cup
is a USEF program for Young Adults
age 16 through 25 who are making
the transition to senior Grand Prix
competition.
“It was so exciting to be riding DW
down the centerline in the Rolex
arena at the Kentucky Horse Park,”
Genay said. “It was our first year
competing in the Brentina Cup, and
we were among riders who have a lot
more experience at this level, so I
was thrilled we were able to win
Reserve Champion. I couldn’t be
more proud of DW, and I couldn’t be
more grateful to my family for their
support.”
In their first year in Brentina Cup
competition, Genay and “DW”
scored an overall 64.646% for the
Reserve Championship. Their scores
of 65.641% in Wednesday’s USEF
young Adult Brentina Cup and
63.651% in Friday’s 2009 FEI Young
Rider Grand Prix 16-25 counted
50% each toward the final score.
2013 also saw Genay earn the final
scores for her USDF Gold Medal and
be selected as a participant in the
Robert Dover Horsemanship Week
in Palm Beach, Florida.
“Now my mom and I both have our
gold medals,” Genay remarked of
Starr Vaughn Equestrian owner,
manager and trainer Michele
Vaughn. “I wouldn’t be where I am
today without her - she’s been teaching and coaching me from my first
pony ride.”
This lifelong dressage student also
regularly clinics with Olympian Jan
Ebeling, and has been coached by
Hilltop Farm’s Christopher Hickey
and USEF National Youth Coach
Jeremy Steinberg.
This January at the Robert Dover
Horsemanship Week, Genay had the
opportunity to learn from six-time
Olympian and USDF Hall of Fame
star Robert Dover, who was later
named Chef d’Equipe/Technical
Advisor for the U.S. dressage team,
in addition to lessons with U.S. dressage team riders Tina Konyot, 2012

this sophomore at the University of
California, Davis. Genay fits in time
for teaching and training as well; she
teaches at her family’s Starr Vaughn
Equestrian and trains some
up-and-coming young dressage
horses.
“I know it takes preparation and
dedication to achieve big goals,”
Genay said. “The Brentina Cup is a
great way for Young Riders like
myself to prepare for a future in high
performance equestrian sport, and I
am so grateful for the opportunity to
compete in it. Ultimately my goal is
to represent the U.S. in international
competition.”
What’s next for this dedicated rider?
“I’d like to spend a year training and
competing in Europe,” Genay
revealed. “That’s a goal worth working hard to achieve.” Meanwhile,
Genay will continue her studies at
UC Davis and training her horses.
The 2014 competition year will see
her aiming to top 2013’s accomplishments. n

Hanoverians Rule the NorCal Medal Finals
by SHERI SCOTT
Hanoverians ruled the weekend at the NorCal Medal Finals on
Oct. 9-13, 2013. There were three equitation finals at the show,
and Hanoverians swept four of the top five placings in the
NorCal 3-foot Junior/Amateur Medal Final. Champion was
Elton, ridden by Patty Gill of El Dorado Hills, Calif.
Gill and Elton placed second in the first round on
Saturday. They came back on Sunday to win the second
round, and were first going into the work off. Gill felt
confident going into this medal finals, as she had won the
Zone 10 Stirrup Cup Medal Challenge the week before,
which was also held at Brookside Equestrian Park in Elk
Grove, Calif.
“In the second round of the NorCal there was a horse
bucking in his paddock that you could see from the end of
the arena,” said Gill. “Elton got kind of strong, but I got
him back under control.”
“He’s pretty easy going,” she continued. “He’s not high
maintenance. He doesn’t take a lot of preparation. He can
get a little fresh some times, but once you work him down
he’s pretty good.”
Gill, who is 15 and a sophomore at Oak Ridge High
School in El Dorado Hills, only purchased Elton in
mid-August, less than two months before the NorCal
Finals. She has ridden since she was six and competed in
the pony division. She has leased a couple of horses, but
Elton is the first horse she’s owned. He’s 16.3, quite a
change from the large pony she showed up until last year.
Gill trains with Kelly Van Vleck of Van Vleck Sporthorses
based at the Murieta Equestrian Center in Rancho
Murieta, Calif.
“Elton has a really big stride, so I’ve had to get used to
that,” said Gill. “He’s really well balanced and carries himself well.”

A ten-year-old chestnut gelding, Elton is by Embassy out

Reserve champion in the 3-foot Finals was Landor, an 11- year-old
bay Hanoverian gelding by Landor S out of Vanessa. He was ridden
by his owner Alexandra Hirt of Alamo, Calif. Hirt’s first show with
Landor was in June at the Woodside Circuit Opener.
The pair kept getting better as the Medal Final went on at Brookside.
They were 8th in the first round of the 3-foot Medal, and 3rd in the
second round. Hirt put in a great trip in the work off and brought
home the reserve championship. She also won the CPHA Child/
Adult Medal 3’0” class at the show. Hirt trains with Hilary Johnson
of Rose Hill Stables in Pleasanton, Calif.
Third in the 3-Foot NorCal Medal Finals went to another bay
Hanoverian gelding, Mr. Jordan, owned and ridden by amateur
rider Emily Mills of Sacramento, Calif. Mills only starting showing
Mr. Jordan in recognized shows at the end of July. In the Medal
Finals they were 4th after the first round, and had a bit of trouble in
the second round and placed sixth. A good work off ride brought
them up to third overall. Mills also placed third in the CPHA Child
/ Adult Medal 3’0 class at the show. She trains with Debbie Stone of
Nighthorse Farm, based at Brookside Equestrian Park.
A non-Hanoverian slipped into fourth place, but Lukas D and
Katherine Mannina placed fifth in the 3-foot Medal Final. Lukas D
is a 17 hand, 11-year-old bay gelding by Rainbow Equus’ stallion
Landkonig and is out of All That Sparkles. He was bred by
Dreamcatcher Ranch in Somerset, Calif. Mannina, of San Jose,
Calif.
Mannina, a junior rider, first started showing Lukas D in June of
2013 in the 2’9” and 3’0” classes. They won the Almaden Farms
Equitation Special at the Almaden Farms show in Watsonville in
July. They also won the NorCal Medal 3’0 class at the second week
of Almaden in July. She trains with Corrie Busalacchi of Triple Bar
Stables in Gilroy, Calif.
At the NorCal 3’ Medal Finals Mannina and Lukas D had a slow
start, placing tenth in the first round. They had a wonderful trip in
the second round, placing second, which put then in fifth place, just
missing the work off. Miannina lives in San Jose, Calif.
In the NorCal Senior Medal Final, Graf Furioso was the sole
Hanoverian. This 10-year-old chestnut gelding was bred by
Glenwood Farms when they were located in Wilton, Calif. He is by
Graf Top II and out of Phran Sancisco/Prinz Gaylord. Owner
Nicole Carroll of Nicolle Carroll Equestrian in Pleasanton, Calif.,
has shown him in jumpers, the performance hunter division, and in
derbies, and her students have shown him in the equitation and
hunter divisions.
Soleil Teubner rode Graf Furioso in the NorCal Senior Medal Final.
They placed fifth in the first round, and third in the second round
to make it into the work off. They placed fourth overall.

Damsey’s Son Licensed at the Hanoveraner Köring in Verden
by Xavier Boudon, Phelps media group
A bay son of Leatherdale Farms’ famous approved stallion
Damsey (HAN) has been licensed by the Hanoverian Stud
Book during the traditional 129th Hanoveraner Körung
held in November. Along with this great performance by
Damsey’s progeny, the show highlighted the production of
Ria Grande (1991, by Ritual HAN), dam of Damsey and
Daianira van de Helle, two top dressage champions.

The Stallion Licensing and Stallion
Sales of the Hanoverian Stud Book
took place Oct. 24-26 in Verden,
Germany. Verden, famous all over the
world for welcoming the World
Dressage Young Horse Championships
every year, also celebrates the best new
licensed Hanoverian stallions.
Hanoverian Stud Book and its Licensing commission,
composed of renowned experts, approved the first son of
Damsey, out of the Worldly/Laptop mare Wünsch Dir Was
(“Make a Wish”) and named him Premium Stallion, a title
only granted to 19 stallions at the licensing - 11 dressage
and 8 jumping stallions. This stallion, bred and owned by
Doug & Louise Leatherdale is based at Hengststation Jens
Meyer in Dorum, Germany. The Leatherdales maintained
4
ownership of the stallion.
The Stallion Licensing is only open to
males registered in the Hanoverian
stud book at their birth. At 2.5 years
old, the best horses (103 this year) are
presented to Stallion Licensing . The

Ria Grande Hanoverian Mare of

Another evidence of the high genetic
quality of Leatherdale Farms’ licensed
stallion Damsey is his dam Ria

been named “Hanoverian Mare of

for the amazing quality of her progeny,
especially the two top dressage horses
Daianira van de Helle and the privately
owned stallion Damsey. Ria Grande
was presented along with her 2013 foal,
a full brother of Damsey by Dressage
Royal. This new honor confirms the
choice made by the Leatherdale family,
making them one of the most contemporary and reliable stud farms for
Hanoverian horses in the world.
The D-line
The lineage of D goes back to Devil’s
Own, a Thoroughbred active from
1894 to 1906, through Detektiv, a stallion active from 1926 to 1943 to whom
all of the D-line offspring approved
today can be traced. The line is then
divided into a main branch out of
Dolman and another smaller branch
out of Dwinger which produced
Diskant, from which came Donnerhall,
great-father of Damsey. Stallions out of
this D-line are rare and much sought-after by breeders.
About Damsey
Damsey comes from the famous D-line,
prominent for many years thanks to
such sires as Donnerwetter, Duft II, De
Niro, Don Frederico and Donnerhall.
The 2013 European Champion Team
all rode horses out of the D-line:
D’Agostino 5, Don Johnson FRH,
Desperados FRH and Damon Hill
NRW. Damsey, born in 2002 at
Hengsthaltung Kothe, Gestüt Alsenhof,
in Wacken, Germany, is by Dressage
Royal (Donnerhall) and out of Ria
Grande (Ritual).
Licensed by the Hanoverian stud book
in 2005 and then purchased by
Leatherdale Farms, Damsey qualified
for the 2006 Young Dressage Horse
World Championships. He proved his
quality in dressage competitions where
his walk especially stood out, regularly
scoring 9.5. Damsey’s sire, Dressage
Royal (Oldenburg dam line of Fasse
III), placed in the Federal five-year-old
Dressage Championships and has
already produced numerous foals.
Damsey’s dam Ria Grande also produced Daianira van de Helle (Dream
of Glory) who finished 6th and 13th at
the World Dressage five- and six-yearold Horses Championships. Damsey is
licensed by Hanoverian and Danish
stud books.

The inspection started with a large group of 10
mares in the Performance Test (MPT). We were
delighted to see so many mares presented for the
MPT. Of the ten presented, seven earned the coveted score of 7.0 or better. A stand-out in the MPT
was EMC Furst Daylight (Furst Impression–Amelia

year before and showed the promise under saddle
that those inspectors had anticipated: good through
the jump chute and three quality gaits. The highlight was her rideability where we all agreed she
would be a pleasure to ride, earning her a 9. As a
result, Furst Daylight received the overall dream
score of 8.16 for her MPT and is now an Elite Mare

Two mares were presented for the mare
performance test and they both acquitted themselves nicely. Ginniveve, by
Graf Top II-Opera/Ostwind, received a
7 for her jumping score. While we
would have preferred a better bascule
over the jumps, she maintained a good
attitude and consistent form throughout this exercise. Her willingness to
please was also evident under saddle
where she received an 8 for rideability.
Her gait score of 7.16 was comprised of
a 7.5 for the walk, and 7s for the trot
and canter. This type of solid performance test is always applauded and
was rewarded with a final score of 7.38.
Congratulations to her owner and
breeder Sandy Campbell. The second

and is owned by Gina Gregory of
California. When the jumping was
complete, her owner, Gina, and Edgar
and Susan Schutte, owners of
Landkoenig, had to be pleased with the
result. With 9s for technique and ability Landollure certainly didn’t look
back. A true jumping talent, she was
always careful and confident as she
consistently approached each fence in
a nicely self regulated pace. Over the
fences her form was framed by excellent use of the back, and front, and
hindlegs. Under saddle her rideability
and gaits scores were not quite as
strong as those of Ginniveve, but she
too had enough points for a final score

of 7.38. Because of her stellar jumping
ability she was named our MPT
Champion of the day.
Both of the MPT entrants were able to
achieve EMC status after successfully
completing their mare inspections.
Ginniveve finished with a final score of
7.0. As is often the case her impulsion
score was improved when she was
allowed to free run. Landollure’s final
score of 7.16 gave her points to spare as
well as second place in our group of
Hanoverian mares. With a pair of 8s
for type and impression and development, she was obviously easy on the
eyes while standing still or jumping

While we only had two two-year-old fillies and one yearling filly for
our futurity classes, we were delighted to see these youngsters and
their “warts”. At this age these individuals are of course betwixt and
between. We judge them as we see them on the day and don’t attempt
to reconfigure them as we might imagine they could be in the future.
Therefore it often takes brave souls who are willing to unveil their
youngsters at this juncture in time. The tradeoff for the owners is of
course an unbiased assessment of their individuals as well as an
opportunity to expose these impressionable youngsters to a new
environment. Boadicea Lind, by Balou du Rouet-EM Christiahna/
Contendro I, was our higher scoring two-year-old filly with a score of
65.5. Wilhelmina R, our lone yearling filly, finished with a 68.

One out of the four non-Hanoverian mares (two Oldenburgs, an
Arabian and a Holsteiner) presented gained entrance to the AHS
Main Studbook with a final score of 7.0. As we look at these mares we
are always reminded how strenuous it is for an outside mare to gain
admittance into our registry. They are held to a high standard as we
strive to take in mares who we believe will have a positive impact on
our breed. They must have a final score of at least 7.0. Any one weakness can be the difference between obtaining the elusive 7 or not. On
this day we were able to accept the Oldenburg mare Paloma, by PabloEos/Condino, owned by Laurie Peters. With 8s for her neck and type
and femininity, Paloma completed her inspection with an overall 7.0
and was graded into the Main Studbook. Thanks are certainly in order
to the owners who make the effort to bring non-Hanoverian mares to
AHS inspections.

rainbow Equus – Top Filly of the day was Edgar and Susan
Schutte’s Wild Dance daughter (Wild Dance-Donna Novella/De

A strong group of foals kept us amused as they made their public
debut. Edgar and Susan were the proud owners and breeders of eight
of these individuals. Jennifer Lind’s Dannebrog colt out of EM
Saaliyah Lind, by Stedinger, took home the ribbon for the top colt of
the day. He impressed us with his conformation and his movement.
He demonstrated excellent use of the hind leg and both his trot and
his canter were quite balanced. Saaliyah Lind is a very attractive
mother, and she certainly gave this fellow a good leg up. Our top filly
of the day was a daughter of Wild Dance out of Donna Novella, by De
Niro. Bred by Edgar and Susan, this elegant filly had the light, elastic
ground covering steps to match her modern and correct exterior.
Day two of our California tour marked a first for our society. We had

asset, coupled with their scope to be truly successful. Eight mares
were presented for inspection, and we were pleased to accept five of
these ladies into our Main Studbook. As mentioned earlier getting
these non-Hanoverian mares into our studbook is no easy feat. Our
five acceptances are as follows: Orienta (Calido I/Lord); Talandra

some of the jumpers of tomorrow when we inspect future foals out of
these mares.

We travelled south to Ramona for our third day of inspections. Creek
Hollow Farm, owned by Colleen Burman, has been one of our reliable sites for some years now, and we appreciate Colleen’s continued
support.
Creek Hollow has a flexible arena arrangement with several outdoor
arenas as well as a very large covered arena. We started the jumping
portion of the MPT in one of the outdoor arenas. Here there is a
sturdily constructed jumping chute. The first of our two mares was
Fortunate Future, a daughter of Fabuleux-Finesse/Future Z. This
seven-year-old bay mare was the perfect combination of calm and
keen. While she could have been a little tighter with the use of her
front legs, she was always careful and showed good use of her head,
neck, and back. She received a pair of eights for technique and ability. Glenwoods Zena, by Graf Top II-Phran Sancisco/ Prinz Gaylord,
could not match Fortunate Future through the jump chute. She did
garner a pair of sixes for her technique and ability. While she was
fresh and distracted by her surroundings, she used speed to her
advantage while jumping. We hoped that as she began to relax she
would use her back more over the fences. As she relaxed, however, her
use of the back did not improve. Instead she became less sure of
herself. It is not unusual for this situation to arise when an individual is compensating for a weakness. Under saddle however she turned
the table on Fortunate Future who was more downhill in her movement and less expressive in her gaits. Glenwoods Xena proved to be
very rideable and obedient while posting scores of 7 for her walk and
7.5 for her trot and canter. She became our winner for the day while
finishing with a score of 7.11. Fortunate Future, buoyed by her jumping score, finished with a final score of 7.0. With her previous inspection score of 7.33, and as the dam of two AHS registered foals, she is
now an Elite Mare. Glenwoods Xena kept pace when she became an
EMC after finishing her mare inspection with a 7.33. While free running we saw more impulsion and elasticity than we had seen under
saddle. We were glad to see this as we had surmised that she was
u
being ridden conservatively.
Three other Hanoverian mares were inspected along with the previously mentioned Genwoods Xena who was high score of this
group. These three participants finished with scores in the mid
sixes, and they are entered in the Main Studbook. Prada R (PabloRoulette R/Rex Fritz) finished with a 6.66. She had solid scores but
needed a freer shoulder for more impulsion and elasticity. Davinesse,
by Davignon, scored a 6.5 while Caprianna, by Contucci, was fourth
with a 6.33.
The sole non-Hanoverian mare presented was a Westfalen branded
daughter of Donnerschlag out of Feine Dame, by Feinbrand. She
marched in to the AHS Main Studbook with a strong 8 for her walk. u
creek hollow farm – EMC Glenwoods Xena took home two
necksashes from the inspection. Her rideability won out for the
MPT and she was praised for her impulsion and elasticity and
ended up the Champion Hanoverian mare. She is owned by
Amanda Gibson and was bred by Glenwood Farms, Calif.
creek hollow farm – Champion non-Hanoverian Mare was
the Westfalen Daylight (Donnerschlag-Feine Dame/Feinbrand).
She was accepted into the Main Studbook. She is owned by
Susanne Mattern and was bred in Germany by Helmut
Kopischke.
While we were aware of a suspensory injury to the right hind leg, she
had no problem showing us a 7 for impulsion and elasticity. It was easy
to imagine that she had more movement prior to the injury. Prior to
the end of her riding career she had been shown in Germany at S level.
She finished with a final score of 7.16. Congratulations to owner Susan
Mattern.
creek hollow farm – Showing great jumping talent, EM
Fortunate Fortune (Fabuleux-Finesse/Future Z) earned solid 8’s
for technique and ability. Having also produced a foal, her MPT
score earned her Elite Mare title. She is owned and bred by Robin
Quasebarth, Calif.
Our single foal of the day was a colt by For Play out of
Kognac, by Kalypso. Kognac is 21-years-old and in foal
again. This colt was very much influenced by his mother.
We would have liked to have seen a stronger and better
angled hind leg on this colt. His mother could also use a
better hind leg and in this case she was more prepotent
than For Play.
Thanks again to our hosts who make these inspection
tours a possibility. Linda Mendenhall and I greatly
appreciated your warm welcome. To all the breeders and
owners we thank you for your efforts to breed a better
Hanoverian. We hope that your horses bring you not
only success but also pleasure. n

Day 1: We started the lovely fall day
with six Mare Performance Tests.
These dressage bred mares were all
well prepared for the jump chute,
which helped them achieve fairly
good jumping scores. The Champion
of the MPT was Wyndixie (WidmarkEM Royal Princess/Rotspon), bred
and owned by Meg Williams.
Wyndixie was forward and brave
through the jump chute scoring a 7.
She impressed under-saddle with
first-rate gaits, receiving an 8.5 for
the walk and an 8 for the canter. She
received an 8 for her rideability and
earnest work ethic making her the
Champion with a 7.66 overall score.
Close behind her was Emme (El
Bundy-Wolkenstina/Wolkenstein II),
bred and owned by Meg. With El
Bundy (Escudo I) adding jumping
blood, Emme demonstrated very
good scope through the chute earning an 8 for ability with 7.5 overall.
She had above average gaits and rideability earning 7.5 for both, giving
Emme a 7.5 final score for her MPT.
Dolce TLF (Dacaprio-Winsome
Ways/Weltbekannt), bred and owned
by Kathryn Benchley, completed a
good test scoring 7 for jumping,
demonstrating above average gaits
(7.5) and rideability (7 .5) for a final
score of 7.33.
Fedorra FDL
(Fabuleux-EM
Dakota
FDL/

owned by Kelli Mardell demonstrated fairly good jumping ability with a
7.75. Her very good canter received
an 8 for a gait score of 7.33; and on
this day her rideability earned a 6.5

It is with delight and great satisfaction that I have had the opportunity
to watch the development of North
American-bred Hanoverians over the
past 30 years. In the 1980’s and early
90’s, the horses had more caliber,
shorter legs and a truly rectangular
frame. Thoroughbred blood was
eschewed. The Hanoverian type
started to change in the late 1990’s
with the changes in the standards of
competition in the Olympic disciplines. The breed standard evolved to
produce a more elegant, leggy horse
with the elastic, uphill movements
for dressage and quicker, tighter and
more agile jumping horses. Today
breeders are better educated than
ever and producing excellent horses.
On the Fall Tour Chris and I saw
many good horses with fully 70% of
the Hanoverian mares scoring 7.0 or
higher!
Meg Williams’ inspection grew and
grew filling two complete days. As
usual Meg and her team were very
organized and everything ran
smoothly. Each day of the site was
run as an individual site with its own
set of Champions.

good technique, receiving a 7.5. Under-saddle she was
relaxed, swinging and attentive to her rider. Her big, elastic
walk and rolling, uphill canter earned her an 8.5 for both.
With easy lengthenings and fluid serpentines, she received an
8.5 for rideability. Her overall MPT score was 8.05. Another u

lateness in the year, some of the foals were at a disadvantage,
being in awkward stages. Top foal of the day was a colt by

receiving 8’s. With her overall inspection score of 7.33,
Whimsical HPF is Elite Eligible. Gabrielle’s Wish (Gold LuckWishes and Dreams/Warkanson), bred and owned by David

Lordanos bred and owned by Holly Kovach. This masculine colt was tall and long-legged with a nearly perfect
topline. He moved fluidly with ground-covering uphill
strides. This charming colt is an example of the modern,
athletic horse we are striving for. Other sires represented
included Valentino, Royal Diamond, Don Romantic,
Rotspon and Don Principe.
The afternoon was rounded out with the Futurities,
which featured two beautiful and harmonious young
mares bred and owned by Peg Lansing. These young girls
are full sisters by Dacaprio out of Mirabella by Metternich.
Dianah FDL , a yearling, has an exquisite head, well-set
neck and is a lovely modern type. She showed a very
good uphill, forward trot for an 8. Then, she spied the
mini-donkey’s two pastures over and completely lost her
focus (or should we say she could only focus on them…).
We were not able to see any more movements and suspended the scoring. Her two-year-old sister, Dame Bella
FDL was an elegant mare with a beautiful head, very
well-set neck and lovely topline. In movement, she
showed good forward movement and a swinging walk. It
was a pleasure to see both of these mares.

t is always a pleasure to participate in the inspection
in Florida. We have seen many top quality horses
there, and this year was no exception. Our new host
was Dr. Mary Beth Stanton, an equine reproduction
specialist and owner of Conundrum Farm. With an
experienced staff and volunteers, the inspection went
off without a hitch. We hope Dr. Stanton will continue
hosting AHS inspections in the future. We made time to
share information and help educate the new breeders
about the Hanoverian breed type and goals.
Three mares participated in the Mare Performance Test.
Our Champion was Rococco OSH (Rotspon-Parisienne/
Prince Thatch xx), bred by Stephanie Hagins and owned
by Mary Beth Stanton. She negotiated the jump chute
adequately receiving a 6.75. It was under-saddle that
Rococco OSH shined. She received 8’s for both the walk
and the canter giving her a gait score of 7.83. Combined
with her rideability and jumping, Rococco OSH received
the good overall score of 7.36. With her very good
inspection score of 8.33, she is now the society’s newest
Elite Mare. Well Worth It MLW (Wolkentanz I-Rohanna/
Rohdiamant) pleasantly surprised us with her very good
jumping technique using her back well and quick in front
and behind earning an 8. Her scope did not quite match
her technique giving her a good overall score of 7.5.
Under saddle, we would like to have seen a little more
elasticity and ground-covering gaits. Well Worth It MLW
completed her test with a good score of 7.11. With her
good inspection score of 7.33, she too is an Elite Mare.
The mare was bred by Mary Lou Winn and is owned by
Andrea Hayden. The dressage bred Chanel MF
(Caprimond-Diora/DeNiro) negotiated the jump chute
satisfactorily receiving a 6.5. With her gait and rideability scores added to her jumping scores, Chanel MF
received a final score of 6.66 for her performance record.
The mare was bred by Maryanna Haymon and is owned
by Erin Merryman.
Two non-Hanoverian mares were presented for approval.
The 16-year-old Trakehner Annie (Enrico Caruso-Astar/
Laiken) was very feminine with a beautiful head. Her age
had diminished her somewhat but she had good structure and fairly good movement. She received a final score
of 7.16 and was approved for the Main Studbook. Annie
is owned by Catherine Beak. The black Westfalen Destina
(Don Frederico-SPS Rikita/Regazzoni) could have been
registered as a Hanoverian as a foal because of her pedigree. Therefore she was inspected using the same standards as a Hanoverian. With her inspection score of 6.5
she was accepted into the Main Studbook. Destina is
owned by Mary Beth Stanton.

She demonstrated a very good elastic, ground covering

both mares demonstrated very good movements which
received an 8, they were named Co-Champions. Both
mares are now Elite Eligible. Feather MLW (FidertanzEM Wolknstanza MLW/Wolkentanz) presented a well-set
neck and very good saddle position which earned her 8’s.
This mare was very supple and elastic with movement
throughout her entire body. Her walk had a good overstep and swinging ground-covering stride. When she
moved off for the trot, we knew we would see something
special. Each step carried Feather MLW upward and forward with light-footed suspension earning her a 9. Her
final score was 7.16 and she is Elite Eligible. Feather

Devinia (De Niro-Dark Allure/Diamont), bred by Susan

and could have shown more ability to step under and
carry. She was taken into the Main Studbook.
In a fairly large foal group, a filly by Ampere out of
Geraldine von Foxpaw (Graf Top I) showed really well.
She was elegant and harmonious with a big, elastic and
light-footed trot demonstrating uphill and ground-covering movements. This Top Filly was bred and is owned
by Andrea Hayden. Other sires represented in this quality
foal group were Grandom, Escudo II, Waltzertraum,
Belissimo, Rascalino, Royal Prince and Fidertanz.
Futurities:
In the Yearling Filly class, the sole entrant Breathtaking
CF was well-named. By Belissimo M out of EM Rococo
OSH/Rotspon, she had a harmonious topline and was a
beautiful type. Her gaits were above average and she
received a final score of 75.3. Breathtaking CF was bred
and is owned by Mary Beth Stanton.

In the Yearling Colt class, the sole entrant was Rubix OO.
By Rubignon out of Lexanna Q/Loerke, he had a very
good foundation. He was a good type with his above
average walk, his final score was 74. Robix OO was bred
by Rita Stegeman and is owned by Natalie Pace.
In the Two-Year-Old Filly class, the entrant was
Wreisentanz by Wolkentanz out of Rubina by Rubinstein.
She was pretty with a good topline and type. With her
quite good walk, her final score was 74.5. Wreisentanz
was bred and is owned by Regina Esterman.

At the HV judges training update, it was stated that the
goal of modernizing the Hanoverian breed type had been
achieved. Now the guidelines state: “The evaluation of
the back construction is of special importance…the
demand on quality of the hooves and the foundation
(legs) will also again be increased”. In some of the horses
judged today there were faults or irregularities in the legs.
Breeders would be advised to look early for leg problems
in foals, so they may be corrected. n

The Two-Year-Old-Colt class had two entrants. Ryszard,
by Rubignon out of a Weltmeyer mare was fairly good
through his topline and a good type with fairly good
movements. He was the class winner with a final score of
71.8. Ryszard’s breeder and owner is Regina Esterman.
Close behind was Le Noyer, by Landkoenig out of Gitane
du Cornet, by Rif du Crocq. Le Noyer was fairly good
through his topline and a good type. His movements
were above average earning him a final score of 71.2.

a beautiful head and harmonious topline. He had a powerful, well-built hind leg that propelled him upward and

owned by Lauren Spjut, was an attractive chestnut that
made a high quality impression. She earned an overall
score of 7.16 and is also Elite Eligible. Several years ago,
the AHS and HV created an option for mares that
demonstrated excellent jumping talent. They could have
their overall jumping score from the MPT added to their
inspection scores, which were then divided by 7 rather
than 6. This method is only used if the result allows the
mare to become Elite Eligible. Finessa’s very good jumping score of 8.25 was added to her inspection score which
resulted in a final overall score of 7.03. Having produced
a foal in 2013 Finessa is a new Elite Mare. The pleasing
bay Reigning Star (Regazzoni-Adlertaenzer/Aktuell) was
bred and is owned by Kathie Digilio. With her well-set
neck, good hind quarter, and walk (all 8’s), she received an
overall score of 7 and is now Elite Eligible. September
Song presented a modern, well-built type that was pleasing to the eye. With her very good MPT and her 7 for
inspection, September Song is now an Elite Mare
Candidate. This was an appealing group of mares, presented well; however, we did see some irregularities in the
foundation of some horses that affected the correctness of
movement. We urge breeders to watch the growing
youngsters carefully to correct potential faults early.

Day one started with a very strong
group of five mares participating in
the MPT. The top scoring mare was
Pik L’s Donabella HU (Pik L-Donatela/
Don Primero), owned by Shannon
Stevens and bred by Horses Unlimited.
She was a very elegant, modern
Hanoverian mare with lots of presence. With scores of 8/8 for jumping,
a conformation score of 8 and an overall score of 7.67 she showed herself
well. The second highest scoring mare
was Syncopation RK (Sinatra SongWerlwhind/Werbellin) owned by Dr.
Annette Hildabrand and bred by
Emmett W. Turner. This mare had
very correct front and hind legs and
was extremely well balanced. She
received an 8 for rideability and finished with an overall score of 7.5. Two
other mares, Pachanga (PablitoWanessa/Werther) owned by Martha
Mitchell and bred by Ellen Day and
Whisteria Lane (Wallstreet KidFlorabunda MWF/Fuerst Von Feuer )
owned by Jennifer Mutchler and bred

The same five mares were also presented for inspection on the first day.
Once again, the top scoring mare was
Pik L’s Donabella with a final score of
7.67. Second was Whisteria Lane who
received an 8 for her impulsion/elasticity and for her walk. The other
mares scoring 7.0 or above were Balou

bloodlines, as well as Pachanga and
Syncopation RK. Four of the five completed the inspection as an Elite Mare

two colts presented for the futurity.
One two-year-old filly, Francheska AH (Fielding-SPS Malena/

Goldfever) also participated in the futurity. Francheska AH, owned
by Rick Toering and bred by Kate Palmquist, received 8’s for her
topline, type and for her trot. She was very correct, and modern. Sir
Lancelot, owned & bred by Dr. Gerhard Bauer, also received 8’s for
his head, topline and type but showed some tightness and tension in
his gaits on this day.
Three Hanoverian mares were presented for inspection on the second day. Donarsagan (Donar Weiss GGF-Wrave/Wallstreet Kid)
received an overall score of 7.17. Owned and bred by Michelle
Roberts, this mare was very correct with a great walk. Code Red
(Contucci-Opening Account xx/Opening Verse xx) is an excellent
example of a Hanoverian/Thoroughbred cross. Beautiful in type,
she was a bit quick in her movement. With the next generation, we
should see the refinement and movement combined for the final
product. The third mare, Calysta MWF (Contucci-Karrena/
Kalypso), owned and bred by Meredith Michelfelder, was entered in
the Main Studbook.
Three foals were presented and top foal of the day was a colt by
CoeurD’Amour-Nisha KS/Nocturno, owned and bred by Karan and

Chris and I feel at home immediately. The big, beautiful
black mare Dorchester (Madison-Wintergame/Weltstern)
was an experienced jumper with her amateur owner Ian
Cameron. While Dorchester’s technique was closer to a
hunter than a jumper, she was relaxed and confident to the
fences. She showed wonderful scope, finally jumping a
wide 4’9” oxer to earn a 9! Her owner said she had no idea
the mare could jump that high. Under saddle, Dorchester
demonstrated fairly good gaits and very good rideability.
Her final MPT score was a very good 7.75.
Dorchester was the only non-Hanoverian presented. She
earned a 7 for conformation. Due to some incorrectness in
her movements she fell one point short of a pure 7. Once
again because of her terrific jumping ability, her MPT
jumping score was added in and she ended with a final
overall score of 7.04.
One Hanoverian mare was presented, the charming
Snowdonia Song (Sinatra Song/EM Weltbeloved P/
Weltbekannt). Snowdonia had a long, sloping shoulder
with a wither extending well into the back, and a very good
front leg that earned her 8’s. This shoulder was reflected
well in her movement. Her trot was elastic, with lovely free
shoulder movement earning her an 8. With her overall
score of 7.16, Snowdonia is Elite Eligible. Dr. Elizabeth
