“We have used the Withefords for starting
stall problems & had very successful results.
We found them to be professional, efficient &
very pleasant to deal with.
One of the fillies we sent them won first time
out. Another soon overcame her stall
problems after a short stay in their care.
We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Gary
& his team to anyone.”
Richard Whitaker, Leeds
“We think Gary & Craig are the most
professional & best we have dealt with for
equine behaviour problems.”

Introduction to Witheford Equine
Trainer Services — Starting
Trainer Services — Starting Stalls
Witheford Equine Ltd provides specialist equine services to
the horseracing industry.
Gary’s methods allow the horse to quickly learn and respond
in the light of their own natural behavioural patterns. In this
way they learn to accept human control as quickly as
possible and are ready to go into training in a much shorter
space of time.
In addition to ‘starting’ yearlings and our general remedial
work, we help racehorses with problems at the stalls. This
is undertaken at Westcourt for more complicated cases or
at trainers’ yards if appropriate. We offer a follow up service
both at the trainer’s yard and by arrangement at the
racecourse as on-going support.
Having worked with horses for over
30 years, Gary has developed a
unique insight into the psychology
of the horse. He is passionate
about his work and has created his
own unique techniques to deal with
equine traits and behaviour in a
shorter period of time than it usually
takes using more ‘traditional’
methods.
Gary and his team work with many of the best known
trainers in the industry and his expertise in dealing with
racehorses spans over 30 years. His expertise and
accessibility has earned him an excellent reputation in the
industry and many trainers count him as an essential part of
their team.
In addition to starting yearlings and dealing with remedial
cases, he regularly works horses at trainers’ yards and at
racecourses to provide on-going support.
He also presents his working methods to the Trainers of the
future at the British School of Racing and the Northern
Racing College. This, together with accepting racing lads
and lasses for Work Experience, helps with Gary’s aim to
educate the up and coming generations of the Racing
Industry in his alternative ways of dealing with young and
problem horses.
Craig Witheford
With the combined skills and availability of both Withefords,
we are able to offer more support than ever for horses
undergoing remedial work at
Westcourt, at trainers’ yards and
at the races.
Craig Witheford is just as
dedicated to his work as his
father and always in demand.
He covers race meetings all over
the country with and
independently of Gary, and has
proved time after time that he
has inherited the same talent as ‘the old man’!
He has also started to take over many aspects of the day to
day running of work schedules and staff in readiness for the
day when he takes over completely from Gary.
Starting
Much of the work done by Gary, Craig and the team
revolves around the thoroughbred racehorse. Each year,
yearlings are transported to us directly from the sales or
from stud by many of the UK’s leading flat trainers for
‘starting’ and this service includes :
Some trainers opt for a bulk stalls screening session at the
beginning of the season for ALL horses at their yard. In this
way a planned schedule of work can be prepared to identify
those horses with specific issues.
Assessing condition in preparation for work
Monitoring and recording evidence of reportable vices for
sales returns including medical observation (viral, joints,
wind etc).
Full livery, keep and on-going welfare
Lungeing / Long reining / Introduction of jockey
Ridden work in a schooling environment and on gallops
Preparation for riding out in a string
Roadwork in Burbage village
Horsebox loading issues
Stalls introduction with entry objection screening

that are already broken in

Working with racehorses who have problems going down
to the start or who are unsettled or distressed at the races
External Remedial Work
Overcoming problems at Trainers' yards such as :
Going onto the gallops
Legging jockeys up
Aversion to veterinary treatments such as injections or
scoping
Problems with clipping, putting the bridle on etc
Residential Stalls service

Walk-in Stalls service
For horses that can be dealt with during one work session
we offer a walk-in arrangement where our staff are on hand
for working the horse in our round pen, through the stalls in
our main yard and on our gallops as appropriate. This can
include follow ups at trainers' yards / stalls tests as required.
External Stalls service

Racecourse Stalls Support
Following stalls work at Westcourt or your yard, we provide
on-going support by attending race meetings throughout the
UK, Europe and RoW.
Bookings can be made at the entry stage and confirmed
after declarations.
“I have learnt more from Gary than any
other horseman in the industry.”
Richard Gibson, Hong Kong
“The work that Gary does with difficult
horses is invaluable to us. There is no
doubt that without his advice & expertise we
would struggle with these horses both at
home & at the races.”
Michael Dods, Darlington
“Several horses would not have been able
to race for their owners without the
assistance of Gary & Craig & their
first class team.
A visit to Westcourt Stables never fails to be
met by a feeling of welcome
& efficiency.
Nothing is too much trouble for them, no
matter how busy they are.”
Jonathan Portman, Lambourn
“Without Gary’s expertise & the great
support from his team, Equiano would have
continued to have issues with the starting
stalls & I have no doubt that this would have
affected his performance.
I consider his services to be a valuable
asset to us. I would certainly recommend
any trainer experiencing stalls problems to
call on him for assistance.”
