In her short life, Rachel, a high school
student and Columbine shooting victim,
worked to change the world with small acts
of kindness. She left a legacy as others have
carried on her message.

Estelle and her husband
Pete, a doctor recently retired from
Washington Health System Family Medicine,
have supported Hospice Care for more than
twenty years.
“After our children were grown, my duties
changed to caring for elderly parents,”
Estelle explains. Her father lived to 85
years and her mother to 96.

The two met at Washington Hospital while
Pete was a physician resident and Estelle
was a medical technologist in the lab. After
they married, Estelle worked in the lab for
several years before she and her husband
decided to start their family, and she
became a stay at home mom and volunteer
in her children’s schools. The Martina’s
have three children – sons, Christopher and
Pete, Jr., and daughter, Julie. Julie and her
husband, Andrew, have the Martina’s only
granddaughter, Alyssa.

“We were always familiar with hospice,”
Estelle continues, “but it wasn’t until my
Dad suddenly became sick that we really
found out what a blessing Donnell House
was to those in the end stages of life. The
compassionate care given to the sick and
their families was a God-send.”

One of the doctors asked me if my Dad was
a jokester because, even though he was
very sick, he was still making jokes. There
were many things I loved about my Dad, but

Hospice Care started over thirty-five years ago
when six compassionate women volunteered
to care for Ruby Carlson during her cancer
battle. Guided by her husband, Dr. J. E.
Victor Carlson, volunteers worked tirelessly
to provide hospice care to other families
suffering with the effects of terminal illness.
When care became too much for volunteers,
donors raised funds for professional staff.
Even after Medicare began to pay for hospice
services, the need for fundraising continued to
cover expenses and care to families unable to
pay. Generous donors, including many of you,
built Donnell House in 2002 and continue to
support our program.
This issue features acts of kindness by long
time donors and volunteers. We also share
ways you can leave your own legacy and
support Hospice Care through planned
giving, permanent recognition opportunities,
and volunteering.

After Lawrence died, Estelle and Pete chose
to remember him with an inscribed brick
in the Commemorative Garden at Donnell
House. “Not only did my husband and I
think that the commemorative brick would
be a great way to honor his memory, but we
believe that my Dad would have been very
happy and proud to know that he became a
part of Donnell House, a place that offers so
much to those needing compassionate care
during the end stages of life.”
“Because we recognize the need for the
hospice program, we have donated to
Donnell House for many years, with the
hope that others will be blessed with the
same comfort that we received.”
Hospice Care is not the only charity
Pete and Estelle support. They also give
donations locally to Washington City
Mission, The Salvation Army, their church, St.
Louise de Marillac, and to those in need.
Over thirty-two years of practicing medicine
in Washington County, Pete saw many
changes in medicine, but his commitment

Donnell House features a Commemorative
Garden of inscribed bricks to give family
and friends a way to recognize their loved
ones for years to come. With your gift of
$100 or $250, you may honor a loved one
with a brick.
New commemorative bricks, for gifts made
before July 1, 2014, will be installed in late
September 2014. We will send letters to
inform donors once the bricks have been
placed. Bricks reserved after July 1 will be
installed in late summer 2015.

Legacy Library
Shortly after Donnell House opened, the Legacy Library was created to recognize the
lives of patients, donors, friends, and families of Hospice Care. The Library is a beautiful,
realistically-painted faux bookcase on Donnell House’s first floor. Brass plaques with the
names of those honored are placed on the spines of the books.
The Legacy has become a way for families to memorialize their loved ones and show their
support for Hospice Care. Loved ones with memorial gifts of $1,000 or more are eligible
for an engraved plate on the Legacy Library.
Families often request donations to Hospice Care in lieu of flowers when a loved one
passes away. Family members are kept informed as gifts are made in their loved one’s
memory. This is a common way to reach the minimum level quickly.
Once $1,000 has been donated, Washington Health System Foundation staff works
with a family to determine the plaque wording. After the plaque is finished, the family
can be present when it is placed on the Library wall. Often, a family requests a short
memorial service with family members and friends. This can also be scheduled around the
anniversary of the loved one’s passing, his or her birthday, or another special occasion.
There’s no time limit on when a Legacy Library plaque can be ordered, regardless of when
gifts are made or when a loved one passes away.

Support Hospice Care as a Volunteer
Volunteers are an important part of
our Hospice Care team. They provide
compassionate support for patients and
families at home and at Donnell House and
assist the office staff. Our caring volunteers
come from all different backgrounds with
different interests and abilities.
Some of the meaningful ways volunteers
can help patients and families may surprise
you. Opportunities at Donnell House include
answering phones, clerical tasks, assisting
office staff, sitting with patients and families,
assisting at meal times, and providing tours.
Some other opportunities include assisting
at community events, knitting or crocheting,
making crafts, playing cards and games,
singing, baking cookies for patients and
families, planting flowers or yard work, home
visits, and writing notes or letters for patients
who can’t.
Each of us has special talents and can
contribute in some way. If you would
like to volunteer, or if you have
another idea how you can use your
talents to support our patients or

W&J Delivers Holiday Cheer to Donnell House
Washington & Jefferson College donated
eleven fully decorated holiday trees to
Donnell House in December. College
departments competed by decorating the
trees as part of a Holiday Tree Challenge,
organized by Maureen Valentine, Director of
Conferences and Events, and W&J junior,
Hannah Aloia. Winners are selected by W&J
faculty and staff, and each year, the trees are
given to community organizations. This year
they were donated to Donnell House.
The winning tree, sponsored by the Business
and Finance Department, was themed “Have
Yourself a Very Movie Christmas.” Movies
included with the tree were also donated to
the library at Donnell House. All eleven trees
were displayed in patient rooms, the Great
Room, and Chapel during the holiday season.

Grief Support Group
An educational support group will meet weekly for 4 weeks this spring and address the emotional, physical and spiritual responses mourners
may be having from their grief. The group will address topics such as: remembering without forgetting and with less pain; the difference
between clinical and reactive depression; typical grief reactions; when to know you need professional intervention; and ways to help yourself
cope. All of this is in a confidential, non- judgmental environment. Not sure if a group is for you? That’s ok. Come the first week and see what
you think. There is no pressure to talk. You can come and listen. The sessions are held at Donnell House beginning March 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Encouraging Others to Give from the Heart

services of the Donnell House will always be
available for patients and family members,”
Mrs. Mary Wichterman of Washington
explains. “During my mother’s final few days,
the staff of Donnell House provided hospice
care in a dignified and serene setting.”
“Twice a year, I volunteer, as a friend of
Hospice Care, by making calls for the
spring and fall phonathons. My goal is to
encourage those who have been touched by
hospice to give from the heart, no matter the
size of the gift.”
For over five years, Mary has been a
volunteer caller at the Hospice Care
Phonathons. She has also mobilized her
sisters in Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary
organization of women educators, to
staff one night of every Spring Hospice
Phonathon as one of their altruistic projects.
