Volume 20 – Issue 1
Message from the President
Coaches,
December will be here sooner than you know it! I wanted to take
this moment to join us for our yearly celebration of cross country,
track and field, and coach young people at our Missouri Track &
Cross Country Coach’s Association clinic. Our clinic will build off
the success of the recent clinics we are offering many great sessions.
Unique to this year’s version of the clinic we will offer a record
number of sessions and speakers. This year we will have two of the
most successful coaches at the elite level delivering our Thursday
night keynote speeches. Boo Schexnayder and Lance Brauman will
deliver a masters class on coaching and life. Make sure you get there
early to get a good seat! My goal this year was to have more hands-on
sessions specifically targeting the throwing and jumping events. Boo
Schexnayder, Ty Sevin, and Brett Halter will bring their professional
and college experience to help you not only see what they do but
how it feels when training these explosive events! Be prepared to
immerse yourself in the learning process. So coaches make sure you
bring your tennis shoes and be prepared to join in the fun! Another
passion of mine is making sure we not only train our athletes, but
we keep them healthy too. Following this passion, I have invited
doctors, coaches, and health specialist who specialize in the world
of track and field. Dr. Colter, Dr. Cyd Williams, Carl Valle, and Tom
Gose will offer us a peek into the things they have done to keep
our athletes healthy to run, jump, and throw at the highest level.
Addition to physical health it is important to make sure your athlete’s
psyche is primed for competition too! Hall of Fame coaches Roberta
McWoods Kirkwood HS, and Jim Cary Lindbergh HS will discuss
the mental aspect of the sport we love. In the world of distance, we
will have the distinct pleasure of picking the brain of great coaches
in both cross country and track. It is my honor to have college coach
Julie Stackhouse along with Illinois high school coach of the year
Jon Burnett of O’Fallon HS and former Missouri coach of the year
Jesse Griffin of Lee’s Summit West HS. In the world of jumps, we will
get a chance to hear from successful jumps coach James Peister Blue
Springs HS. Peister’ s two triple jumpers put on a clinic of their own
at state finishing first and second during the championship. Along
with James, we will have Scott Knox, who creates jump factories
wherever he coaches now at Salisbury HS. In the Pole Vault, both
Chris Moore Rockwood Summit HS and Jim Cary Lindbergh HS will
give us an inside look at what it takes to create a pole vault program
that takes a novice to a champion! Along with throw experts Brett
Halter and Ty Sevin, we also invited the passionate throws coach
Tom Papez of Timberland HS who will share what it takes to create
throwers who defy the laws of gravity! In the world of sprints, you
will not be disappointed. At the clinic, the sprints will be a focus.
Almost each session there will be someone discussing the intricacies
of sprinting and hurdles. The sprint sessions this will include a
plethora of coaches including pro coach Lance Brauman, Florida
hall of fame coach Ken Brauman of Seminole HS, Nick Buckvar
Ladue HS, James Gillespie CBC, pro coach Carl Valle, Matt Warren
Lafayette HS, Steve Warren Parkway Central HS, Phil Wollbrink
Hazelwood West HS, and yours truly Ryan Banta at Parkway Central
HS. This year’s clinic we are experimenting with some combined
sessions where you get two coaches for the price of one. Last but not
least at the hall of fame we get the chance to honor our most recent
inductees and it is a who’s who’s list of great coaches and athletes.
Please don’t forget to join us for our Hall of Fame dinner to honor
coaches Brian Jett, Sheldon Webster, Doug Carder and multi-time
world champion medalist Michael Franks! It should be another
night of great memories, laughs, and, of course, a treasure trove of
coaching wisdom. See you December 10th 2015 in Columbia, MO.
Regards,
Ryan Banta
