Welcome to another edition of People, Places and Projects where we usually highlight a staff member, recommend a specific park to visit and update you on our current projects. Instead of that content this time, I’d like to dedicate this page to our I Love Learning Preschool program and our awesome teachers. We have the pleasure of helping many 3 and 4 year old children come through our I Love Learning Preschool program every year and I know the number of people who either return or start with us are lured by our strong reputation of offering enriching experiences for the children. One major aspect of the program’s success and its strong reputation is our group of teachers. I continually hear that our teachers are excellent educators and role models as well as just being great people. Please meet our 3 year old preschool teachers below. left to right, front row: Laurie Anderson, Karen Larson, Sharon Fenn. Back Row: Amy Netz, Nicole Krebs, Sam Wilson, Annie Caliendo Laurie Anderson: Although being new to the Park District, I have taught preschool for the past three years and have been in the education field for almost 10 years. I enjoy reading, being with family and friends, and photography. My husband and I have four children ranging in ages from 9 to 13 years. We love spending time together as a family, which often involves heading to one of their sporting events. Soccer, Basketball, Cross Country and Track are their current passions. It is wonderful for me to see children feel successful wherever they are, be it on the soccer field or in the classroom! LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Karen Larson: My husband and I both grew up in Elmhurst, IL and moved to Grayslake in 1999. Much of our time is spent with our children on the baseball fields or fishing on Lake Michigan. I enjoy exercising, reading and spending time with my family. Sharon Fenn: My family recently moved back to Grayslake after living in Washington, IL for the past 7 years. I was fortunate to get my old job back at GLPD teaching a variety of classes. I grew up in Mt. Prospect, IL and received my degree at Northern Illinois University. I have two fabulous children. My husband Bill and I enjoy working on our house and traveling. I love photography and finding treasures to repurpose. I love being around children and looking at the world through their eyes. Amy Netz: I’ve been with the park district since 2005. My background includes 20+ years in teaching environments. My husband and I moved to Illinois in 1992, and have lived in Grayslake since 1999. I have two boys, Trevor and Nicholas. I also have a Chihuahua named Monty. In my spare time I enjoy watching my son in marching band at Rams football games. I also attend basketball games, Boy Scout events and tennis matches for my boys. I am a parent volunteer at my children’s schools and I’m involved in the parent resource group. I enjoy hanging out with my family, friends, gardening, cooking, traveling and working out. Nicole Krebs: I’ve been with the Grayslake Park District since 2003. I have three children, who all went through the Grayslake Park District’s I Love Learning Preschool program. My husband and I met at Northern Illinois University in 1990, and moved to Grayslake in 1994 where we’ve lived ever since. I love to read, relax and spend time with my family and friends. Sandra Wilson: Better known as Mrs. Sam, I’ve been with the Park District since 1997 and have taught many Recreation and Sports programs for all age groups. My husband and I moved to IL in 1992 and have two boys. I am an avid outdoors person. I enjoy gardening, hiking, kayaking and swimming. Annie Caliendo: I’ve been with the Grayslake Park District since 2010. My husband Rob and I moved to Grayslake in 1996 from Oak Park where we lived for ten years. I grew up in Northern Nevada in the oldest town in the state, Genoa. We have two daughters, Zoe and Hope. They are both graduates of I Love Learning Preschool! I love to garden, take cross-country car trips with my family and dog Boomer, play sand volleyball and go on family hikes. 3 GENERAL INFORMATION PHOTOGRAPHS REFUND POLICY - Please Read Carefully! SATISFACTION GUARANTEE POLICY We are committed to providing our participants with high quality leisure programs. Our residents and participants are very important to us and we feel you deserve quality at all times. We are confident that our leisure programs provide high quality so we are backing it with a policy called “Satisfaction Guarantee”. Our promise and policy is as follows: The Park District’s promise is that you will be satisfied with the quality of our leisure programs in which you participate or you will receive a full refund of fees you have paid for that program. The policy and refund process is simple. All we request is that you must attend at least one class and if you are not satisfied with the quality of our instruction, that you take a brief moment of your time to come in and complete and return our “Satisfaction Guarantee” refund form prior to the third class. Your input on the refund form is very valuable as it will allow us to focus on where improvement is needed. The Satisfaction Guarantee refund forms are available at the Recreation Center. Upon receiving your completed form by the third class, we will process a full refund of your paid fees provided YOU ONLY ATTENDED THE FIRST CLASS. Attending two or more classes, all refunds will be pro-rated as to how many classes have been held in the program session. THIS POLICY APPLIES TO LEISURE PROGRAMS ONLY! A leisure program is defined as a program where Park District personnel teach activities or skills over a period of three or more weeks. Satisfaction Guarantee policy does not apply to special events, trips, contractual programs, conflicts with scheduling, make up classes, weather related causes or any other cause not within the control of the Park District. Ray was hired in January of 2002 and has been an integral member of our Park District team for over 14 years. If you have ever been a part of any Park District sports program, open gym, special event or played on one of the many sports fields in the parks in the past 14 years, you have probably come in contact with Ray. He will be remembered for his hard work, dedication, his caring attitude, his cheerful demeanor and his goofy sense of humor. Ray’s willingness to do whatever was necessary to make the park district programs the best they could be, is not a skill you can teach an employee. It was Ray’s passion and his love for this community that showed in everything that he did. The Park District is very thankful to have had the opportunity to work alongside Ray for so many years. He touched many lives throughout Grayslake and made a huge impact in our community. Ray will be sorely missed by many but he will always remain a special member of our Park District family. Here are just some of the over 100+ comments that were left on our Facebook page when word got out about Ray’s passing. These truly show the kind of person Ray was and the difference he made in our community. “He was everywhere, all the time – a staple of our community!” “Truly one of the good guys” “He was a fixture – for many years he has always been a part of our weekends and game night. RIP” “Very Sad. Always enjoyed seeing Ray out at the fields. He was the first guy out there, and the last one there to shut off the lights. Hard worker and a genuinely nice guy. The Grayslake community will miss him!” “Many years of wonderful smiles running the clocks and making the kids smile. God Bless you Ray. Peace” “Wonderful, dedicated man! Made such a positive impact on our community. Deepest condolences to his family” “Thanks Ray for taking great care of our kids and keeping the games on time!” “He was usually behind the scenes but so many games could not have occurred in Grayslake without this man and his hard work. Sending prayers to his family and the thousands he touched!” 6 “Ray was the face of the GLPD and we were so lucky to have him. Ray went above and beyond what was asked of him. Most of the softball girls thought he ran the park district. This summer at Alleghany won’t be the same without him.” Tuesday, May 17th 6:00 - 7:30pm Join us at the Recreation Center, 240 Commerce Drive, to meet the Summer Camp Directors, get your questions answered, receive camp paperwork, lesson plans and field trip schedules! CAMP POLICIES HEALTH & SAFETY Emergency Forms The Park District does not require children to have a medical examination to attend camp. However, it is important to accurately complete the emergency forms that are included in your parent manual. If your child has special needs such as allergies, phobias or medical alerts such as epilepsy or asthma, please include this information with home and work phone numbers on the form we provide. These forms must be returned to your camper’s director on the first day of camp. Reporting Safety Concerns The Park District is committed to providing a safe place for your recreational activities. We encourage Grayslake residents to report safety concerns about our facilities and parks by calling (847) 223-7529. You can leave a message any time of the day, seven days a week. Because of the high volume of people using our facilities each day, our facilities can change daily. We want to know if you see something that concerns you. CAMPER DROP-OFF & PICK-UP We are concerned about our camper’s safety not only at camp, but also in arriving and departing camp. It is very important that the camp staff know the means by which each camper will arrive and depart each day. We ask that parents walk their child to the arrival and departure destinations (whether this is inside or outside) each day. In the event you will not be available to pick up your child, only those persons listed on the emergency release form, that you completed, would be allowed to pick up your child from the program. A picture I.D. may be requested from you or anyone picking up your child. RELEASE OF INFORMATION During camp sessions, photos are often taken of all participants. Please see the back of the registration form for details. 9 PRESCHOOL CAMPS TERRIFIC 2 BE 2 CAMP Age: 2 years It is a terrific time to be 2 years old. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. The Grayslake Community Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participant’s safety. Please recognize that the Grayslake Community Park District does not carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. The cost of such would make program fees prohibitive. Therefore, each person registering themselves or a family member for a recreation program / activity should review their own health insurance policy for coverage. It must be noted that the absence of health insurance coverage does not make the Grayslake Community Park District automatically responsible for the payment of medical expenses. Due to the difficulty and high cost of obtaining liability insurance, the agency providing liability coverage for the District requires the execution of the following Waiver and Release. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. WAIVER AND RELEASE OF ALL CLAIMS Please read this form carefully and be aware that in registering yourself or your minor child/ward for participation in Grayslake Community Park District programs, you will be waiving and releasing all claims for injuries you or your child/ward might sustain arising out of the above programs with the Grayslake Community Park District. I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in Grayslake Community Park District programs and I agree to assume the full risk of any such injuries, including death, damages or loss regardless of severity which I or my child/ward may sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected or associated with such programs. When registering by fax, it is mutually understood that the facsimile registration document (including the waiver and release of all claims) shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original form. I agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my child/ward may have as a result of participating in the program against the Grayslake Community Park District and other agencies and its officers, agents and employees. I do hereby fully release and discharge the Grayslake Community Park District and its officers, agents, servants, and employees from any and all claims from injuries including death, damages, and losses sustained by me or my minor child/ward arising out of, connected with, or in any way associated with the activities of the programs. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless and defend the Grayslake Community Park District and its officers, agents, servants and employees from any and all claims resulting from injuries including death, damages and losses sustained by me or by my child/ward arising out of, connected with, or in any way associated with the activities of any of the programs. In the event of any emergency, I authorize Grayslake Community Park District officials to secure from any licensed hospital, physician and/or medical personnel any treatment deemed necessary for me or my minor child/ward’s immediate care and agree that I will be responsible for payment of any and all medical services rendered. I also understand that unless specifically stated in writing at the time of registration, registrants and participants permit the taking of photos and videotapes of themselves and their children during Park District activities for publication and use as the Park District deems necessary.
