A Punderson Cabin
Punderson Manor Lodge
Discover the rich history of beautiful
Punderson Manor State Park Lodge and Conference Center
View of Punderson Lake from the Boardwalk
Punderson’s history dates to
the ice age, as receding glaciers
left a 90-acre lake that is 85-90
feet deep in places – and is one
of Ohio’s few naturally-formed
inland lakes.
Arriving from Connecticut
in 1806, Lemuel Punderson
surveyed the area and dubbed
the lake “The Big Pond.”
Lemuel, wife Sybil, and their
six children lived in a cabin
originally built for the workers
of the family’s grist mill and
distillery. After Lemuel’s death
in 1822, the pond was renamed

“Punderson,” and upon Sybil’s
death the lake was opened for
public use.
In 1902, W.B. Cleveland began acquiring land around the
lake, and after marrying Ocie
Coppedge in 1904, construction
began on the “Big House,”
located where the Manor
stands today.
When W.B. Cleveland fell
ill in the 1920s, the Cleveland/
Coppedge families entered into
a land contract with builder
Karl Long, who spent $250,000
to tear down the existing
“Big House” (leaving only
the chimneys) and build an
English Style Tudor Mansion.
In 1929, Long defaulted on the
mortgage and abandoned the
property, which reverted back
to the Cleveland/Coppedge
families. Ocie Coppedge operated a girl’s summer camp at
the Mansion in the 1930s.
No longer able to support
the camp or keep up the
property, Ocie sold the rights
to the land to the State of Ohio
in 1948. The State began renovations in 1951 and opened the
Mansion’s 8 guest rooms and
dining facilities to the public
in 1956.
A $1.4 million addition in
1965 added 24 additional lodge
rooms and 26 cottages, and on
February 1, 1966, Punderson
Manor State Park Lodge was
unveiled to the public.
In March 2015, Punderson
Manor will again welcome back
the public after a massive renovation program. Highlights will
include completely-refurbished
2-bedroom cabins, updated
indoor and outdoor pools, a
new lakeside boardwalk and
many other behind-the-scenes
renovations to make your stay
even more enjoyable.

The updates will be joined
by other long-time favorites
like the 18 hole championship
golf course, marina, full-service
Cherry Dining Room, fire pits,
shuffleboard, game room,
volleyball, tennis & basketball
courts, disc golf course,
playground, miles of trails for
hiking or cross-country skiing,
sledding hill, Haunted History
Tours, horse drawn carriage and
sleigh rides, and much more.
And Punderson Manor
remains a popular stop for
groups of all sizes – including
corporations, weddings, and

the story of Square Bistro...

For self-proclaimed family
man and restaurant owner
Jaret Havanchak, a meal is
more than just food - it’s mostly
about family and community.
Jaret acquired his passion
for food at an early age. After
harvesting vegetables in his
grandmother’s garden at age
five and helping his mother
in the kitchen growing up, he
received his first job in a
restaurant at age 16.
Jaret took his passion
further and graduated from
Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in 2002 and began working under French inspired
Chef Rick Boyer at the white
table cloth restaurant “Wright’s”
in Phoenix, Arizona.
In 2008, Jaret began his
journey as a restaurant owner
and took control of seafood
hotspot Lure Bistro, located in
downtown Willoughby.

Six years later, he opened
Square Bistro, located in
historic downtown Chardon.
Square Bistro specializes in
unique dishes in a casual
setting, a dozen hand crafted
beers on tap and an experience you can’t get anywhere
else in Chardon.
Now 32, Jaret resides in
Chardon and when he’s not
preparing quality cuisine at
his two restaurants, he is
enjoying the company of his
three children, Ava, 6, twins
Ivy and Elena, 4, and wife
Rebekah, 33. Watching his
children grow up in Chardon
has strengthened his love for
the community and reinforced
his push to support local farmers in his restaurants.
Havanchak focuses on
fresh ingredients in all of his
dishes including locally grown
and raised beef, pork & lamb
from New Creations Farm in
Chardon. His vegetables are
also acquired from various
farms in the Geauga County
area.

Our Amish Neighbors...
Many people visit Geauga County looking for unique
shopping experiences. Hershbergers Housewares provides a wide range of unusual and hard to find items.
Store owners Gideon & Margaret Hershberger
tell us how Hershberger Housewares came to be…
In February of 1993 the doors
opened for Hershberger Housewares. When I, Margaret,
was diagnosed with a serious
heart condition and with our
children being young, it
was decided to start this
as a supplement to help
with medical expenses.
With my heart just functioning at 20% we didn’t
know which way the Lord
would lead us.
Our children have met people
from different cultures all over
the world. A group of Japanese
students visited our home, they
bowed and thanked us in soft
voices. Through their interpreter they told us of the
crowded living conditions
in Japan and how much
our home would be worth
there. German students
visited the store and spoke
a dialect similar enough to
ours that we could easily
communicate. An 80 yr old man
from Turkey saw our sons
re-shingling the barn roof, and
having never seen a shingle
before, climbed right up the
ladder! The store has been a
good learning experience for
us all.
When we first opened we
carried mostly quality kitchenware including stainless steel
bowls, stock pots, and all kinds
of kitchen accessories. Since
the year 2000, more people have
shown an interest in growing
and preserving their own food
so we carry food steamers, food
mills for sauces, and pressure
canners for canning meats and
vegetables. We also carry oil
lamps, fittings and chimneys,
battery lanterns and lamps.
Our clientele has grown over
the years to an even mix of
Amish and non-Amish. While we
use these products everyday; you
may find them useful when the
power fails. The kitchen selections have now greatly expanded
and we carry jams and jellies,
local maple syrup and honey, a
wide assortment of gloves, games
and toys for the family, framed
wildlife paintings, braided and woven throw rugs.
In 1998 we added an addition
to our store called the “Country
Candle Corner”. We carry Yankee
Candles™, Wood Wick™, and
Colonial Candles™, wreaths, and candle accessories.
Twenty two years later we
are still enjoying meeting and
making new friends, and now
as grandparents we thank God
each day for the blessings He
has given us.
We are open Mon. thru Fri.
8:30 am to 5 pm, Sat. 8:30 am
to 4 pm, and Closed Sunday.

Each spring, from
late Feb. to early April,
community groups throughout the county host “all-youcan-eat” pancake breakfasts
serving real Geauga County
maple syrup.

Geauga County has a rich history in the production of maple
syrup. One of the earliest supporters of the maple industry is the
Burton Chamber of Commerce and their Log Cabin and Sugar
Camp in Burton, Ohio, here is the story for how they started...
In March of 1931 a new log
cabin officially opened in
Burton, Ohio. This unique log
cabin was built by the Burton
Chamber of Commerce, in the
throws of the depression, to
promote the maple industry
in Geauga County. The cabin
opened with record breaking
crowds attending the first
Maple Sugar Carnival in
Burton, Ohio.
Local men & women
cooked syrup in open kettles
over big camp fires. People
from country and city made

their pilgrimage to witness
the process of making sugar
on that day.
Syrup vendors were kept
occupied boiling the sweet
offering which the crowd
bought and stirred in the light
of the camp fires.
Displays of maple cream,
sugar and syrup attracted the
eyes of the visitors and purchases of these wares for the
day exceeded expectations.

Each day brought more
visitors to the cabin, all of
whom were interested in the
making and sampling of one
of Geauga’s famous products.
Indications were that the
maple industry would flourish
for a number of weeks longer.
Some 84 years later the
tradition of maple syrup
production in Burton by
the Burton Chamber of
Commerce is alive and well.
Volunteers continue to collect
and boil the sweet maple sap
into syrup and all proceeds
from sales are given back
to the community in many
forms.
The Burton Chamber
has provided assistance to
athletic groups, youth scouting organizations, students
in the form of scholarships,
hospitals, local businesses,
and many other organizations
during those years. In addition, the non-profit
funds generated through
sales at the Log Cabin support
the Chambers’ beautification efforts of Burton Village
through flower baskets,

The next generation of candy makers in training
plantings and Holiday decorations. These funds also provide
for public restrooms, all at no
expense to the inhabitants of
Burton or visitors to the Log
Cabin and the park.

The Burton Log Cabin and Sugar Camp was built as a replica of the log cabin Abraham Lincoln grew up in.
Since it was build additions have been made to add a storage area and public bathrooms.

It all began in 1986 when
my parents, Carol and Jerry
went to their first show in
Washington D.C., with my
aunt and uncle who had a
shop in Virginia. They helped
each other and shared many
ideas over the years as both
family businesses grew. The
products they offered varied
from sterling silver jewelry
and rings, Native American
artifacts, African leather
jewelry, blankets, jackets,
and toys. Although I worked
a fulltime job, I helped when
my schedule allowed. We

would go with her grandparents to the flea markets and
also to work our permanent
spot at Aurora Farms indoor
flea market. When the outlets
expanded and the flea market
ended we needed to find a
new location. We settled on
Middlefield at the Flea Market on Nauvoo Road. Country
Arts & Jewelry started out
just in the front room where
we are currently located.
When the Market expanded
the Sale Barn building to add
more shops, we enlarged our
store. When the walls came
down, and the store more
than doubled in size, it was
time for me to become a full
time employee at the shop. It
slowly grew to include a much
larger line of jewelry, rings,
candles, statues, t-shirts,
framed artwork and Native
pottery, drums and artifacts.
We then expanded into home
décor, apparel and jackets,

and enlarged our crystals and
gemstone specimens. Always
looking for affordable jewelry
we started buying beads and
findings to sell and create our
own designs.
To find the unique and
authentic products we wanted
to offer we needed to travel
to the Southwest. In January
and February we do our main
buying in Arizona, New Mexico
and Texas which includes the
gem shows and pow-wows.
Traveling to California
and Nevada to buy
direct from the
artists and
craftsmen, and
visiting
various
Native
American
reservations,
allows us
to hand select each and
every item. We plan to
continue traveling to select
unique items and will always
look for new and interesting
products from the Southwest
and around the world.

1800’s. In the next generation,
NC and Mabel helped organize
the East Cleveland Farmers’
Market as an outlet for local
farmers’ products in the early
30’s. As Sam and Iona took
up the reins in the 50’s, they
moved their farm to Caves
Road, narrowed the crops to
fruit and built one of the first
permanent farm markets in
the state. Their son Jim and
wife Nancy came back from
college and saw a coming trend
toward pick your own. They
bought his uncle’s farm and
planted more apple trees and
strawberries for that purpose.
As more and more people
came out from the city to do
their own “picking”, it became
apparent families were also

In Chesterland six generations of the Patterson family have
played a hand at transforming their farm into a
destination for families looking for quality fruit and fun
opportunities for their children.
As it was in those early settler
days, farms produced the food
their families ate. Vandora
and Augustus Patterson began
reaching out by establishing
an “egg” route through the
Heights areas of Cleveland
where they sold eggs, milk,
chickens and fruit in the late

Started in 1972 as a support
group for local agricultural
agents, the Master Gardener
Volunteers is now a national
presence with over 3000 members in Ohio alone. Organized
by county OSU Extension
offices, these volunteers are
specially trained and certified
by Ohio State University to
provide horticultural expertise
to home gardeners.
They provide free helpline via
phone or email to answer
specific questions, classes on
topics of interest to gardeners
and programs to schools,
garden clubs, seniors, civic
groups. In addition many
county Master Gardener groups
offer educational events to the
community. The Geauga
Master Gardeners offer
Gardens Galore Art and More,
a fun day full of garden tours,
classes, plant sales, decadent
desserts and garden art on the
3rd Wednesday in June.

Village Museum in Burton.

There is a winery in Parkman?
The Story
of Laleure Winery
Rich and Betsy Hill moved
“to the country” in the spring
of 1997 after both of their
children entered college. They
spent a year negotiating the
purchase of the old Stoll dairy
farm in Parkman with never a
thought of vineyards or winemaking. But the long sloping
hill, with excellent air drainage
to avoid spring frosts, seemed
to call for grapevines to be
planted. Laleure Vineyards was
established in the spring of

1997 with the first planting of
vines in what is now known as
Betsy-west vineyard. Rich dug
the first 250 holes, 12 inches
wide by 16 inches deep, all
by hand in tough spring-wet
Geauga clay. Needless to say,
a great deal of automation has
occurred since that time.
By 2001 Rich had made wine
from their grapes, and in the
summer of 2002 Laleure Vineyards was officially established
as an Ohio winery.
They converted the old
dairy milk-house to a wine
tasting room, and opened the
doors to Laleure Vineyards.
Six years later the tasting room
was enlarged to include half of
the old dairy barn where guests
are invited to bring their own
snacks and meals. By 2011
the outside deck area was
completed, and winery guests
enjoy a view all the way to PA
on a clear day.
Laleure makes awardwinning wine exclusively from
grapes grown on the property,
from varietals including
Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot
Noir, Cabernet Franc,
Chambourcin, and Vignoles.
The wines are made in a fairly
traditional manner, and as
such are more on the dry side.
When you visit you will be
greeted by one of the “Three
Dogs” that serve as guides from
your car to the tasting room.
Riesel, Merlin, and Maxi are
fixtures at the winery.
The name “Laleure” was
taken from Rich’s grandmother’s maiden name, Jeanne
Marie (Laleure) Hill who was
born in the Loire Valley in
France. Jokingly Betsy says
Grandma Hill was responsible
for getting us into the wine
making business, because
when living with the Hills she
insisted that she those who
surrounded her have a glass of
wine each day! In later years,
Jean Laleure (Rich’s cousin)
introduced the Hills to an old
family toast, which
makes use of a play
on words –
