Smith performs at Salem High School Salem High School Gymnasium was the site of a rare southern Illinois appearace by Michael W Smith, as part of his “New Hallelujah World Tour” on November 8th. Fresh off a tour of 12 European countries, the tour is currently weaving it’s way through the U.S. and making stops in many large metropolitan areas. The stop in tiny little Salem Illinois came about as a result of a chance meeting in Nashville between his personal manager and Brain Fuller of WVYN90.9 The Vine Radio. The two were actually friends many years ago but hadn’t talked since childhood. When their paths crossed, a seed was planted and the end result was an incredible night of praise & worship in a concert that drew a standing-room only crowd of over 3,000 people. Smith opened the show by performing a Newsboys song, “I am Free” with his band and then played many of his former #1 hits including the classic “Friends.” Midway through the set, he was joined together onstage with a 100-voice local choir made up of people from 38 different churches in the area. The local Hallelujah Choir sang 6 songs with Smith and later he was also joined on stage by a strong opening cast of other Chris- tian artists including Matt Maher, Meredith Andrews, and former American Idol finalist, Phil Stacey who all did their own songs to open the show The concert event was sponsored by Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce and produced by 90.9 The Vine-WVYN Radio. More photos from the event can be seen in the photo gallery on the radio station website at www.wvyn.org From the desk of Pastor Ferris Billions of Dollars spent to finD one Man To date, $915.1 billion dollars have been allocated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the USLAW the wars have cost each U.S. family $12,750 dollars so far. In addition to this amount, another $130 billion dollars has been requested for more war spending in 2010. That is a total of 1 trillion 45.1 billion dollars spent for nine years of war. The Washington Post reported, “All told, the bill for war is likely to top $3 trillion. And that’s a conservative estimate. The long-term burden of paying for the conflicts will curtail the country’s ability to tackle other urgent problems.” The cost of war makes it harder to afford new health-care plans, make large-scale repairs to crumbling roads and bridges, or build better-equipped schools. The cost of war has crowded out spending on virtually all other discretionary federal programs, including the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the Envi- ronmental Protection Agency, and federal aid to states and cities, all of which have been scaled back significantly. With the money we have already spent on war and killing, and the amount we are expecting to continue to spend. We could have funded countless schools to give children locked in the underclass a shot at decent lives. Or we could have tackled the massive problem of Social Security, for far, far less than the cost of the war; we could have ensured the solvency of Social Security for the next half a century or more. We could have had a Marshall Plan to help desperately poor countries, winning the hearts and maybe the minds of Muslim nations now gripped by anti-Americanism. In a world with millions of illiterate children, we could have achieved literacy for all -- for less than the price of a month’s combat in these wars. All this cost and suffering because of one man. Osama bin Laden, Considered the worlds foremost Pastor Ferris terrorist, Bin Laden is the alleged perpetrator of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center, damaged part of the Pentagon, and resulted in a plane crash in Pennsylvania. Our response and desire as Americans was to bring him to justice, one man, the leader and mastermind of these attacks. We have not found him, we have not brought him to justice, and we don’t know where he is almost 9 years later and at a cost of over a trillion dollars and climbing. The cost we have paid, looking for one man. But think about the cost one man paid for you. He paid more than money; he used no military weapons, no army and no violence to capture your hearts and minds. He used only love, forgiveness and mercy. His Grace reaches to all mankind. His name is Jesus, The Son of God and the savior of the world. He will cost you nothing, yet he offers you everything. He’s here to be found by you today.
