Earlier on Monday 5 Tantalizing game of T-20 cricket By C K Subramaniam Tell the tale of T-20 cricket as IPL 9 season ended with much sen- nessed towering sixes all over the grounds. Virat Kohli hitting 38 sixes topped the run aggregate also this season. In all Virat Kohli knocked 973 runs out of the 2981 runs scored by Royal Challengers Bangalore. In all, the tantalizing game of T-20 cricket saw 18862 runs scored and that reveals the hilt of their superstar captain David Warner and his team of youngsters. In spite all that the SRH match against Kolkota Knight Riders, match did attract a meagre 7.2 mn impression and that was a sad reflection on the state of the game of IPL cricket. That no match is Cont. on pg. 6 CMYK 6 dailynewsband@yahoo.co.in 1 June 2016 www.newsband.in Issue : 27 1 June, 2016 Will Virat Kohli beat Sachin Tendulkar’s record? The 2016 season undoubtedly belonged to skipper Virat Kohli. Kohli showed his mastery over all formats of cricket by rewriting the record books. No other cricketer other than Virat Kohli since Sachin Tendulkar has left such a firm imprint on a limited-overs contest. In this year’s IPL, Kohli was in the zone, his bat a mere extension of his arm, pulling out shots at will that no fielding team could anticipate or limit. Kohli held centre stage, ahead of Chris Gayle and A.B. de Villiers. Throughout the tournament Kohli gained tempo, shepherded his team, destroyed bowlers with huge sixes and was always alert to the little gaps in the field through which he threaded boundaries. His four centuries came double-fast. Undoubtedly the star performer of IPL 2016, Kohli and his men should have lifted the cup this time for their extravaganza throughout the season. His batting in 2016 has been surreal. It’s true that he has been little unlucky this time but he won our hearts instead. Salute to Kohli for his cricketing prowess. He has set such tall benchmarks in the batting that the IPL editions in the future are bound to be more and more interesting - and hence, more entertaining - as the batsmen would compete to reach those standards and try to even excel them. Perhaps, cricket lovers and players would be indebted to Kohli for this, for many years to come. We should wait and see and what he does in other formats but with this form he could beat more records including that of Sachin Virat Kohli deserves to be the captain in all three formats. He is a special blend of consistency, power and presence of mind. It is time for Indian cricket selectors to start thinking. India has no major event in three years till 2019 World Cup. This is the best chance to think and build. Virat Kohli has rightly been named as T20 Player of the Year. A time has come where you have someone you have groomed over a period of time, who is ready. In the next 18 months, India hardly plays any ODIs, the gaps between Tests and ODIs are massive. So it’s time to look ahead. TV viewership dwindled drastically this time and there were empty stands in the stadium as well. Perhaps, the crowd puller sides of Dhoni and Rohit Sharma were shown the door before the knockout stage. As the betting fiasco and fixing charges continue to haunt the game in India, the hit and run game of cricket showed less popularity. There was a drastic dip in television ratings (TVR) be- tween weeks 3 and 4 and the trend continued till the end. But ground realities tell the true story. Even clients of advertisers, who would earlier pump in large sums of money for advertising during IPL season, seem to have now shifted their focus. IPL 10 should show high standard of the game and more innovative methods of promoting the game as in the earlier years to bring back the past glory and attract more TV viewers. Letters to the Editor.... Banners in HDFC circle? HDFC circle is totally decorated with banners and poster. These banners have invaded every inch of the circle, which is become a great nuisance to the citizens. They are all cluttered with huge banners giving the circle an ugly look. What is most surprising is that these banners have come to occupy every vantage point and obstruct the traffic and distract the car drivers. In spite of that, all our authorities are silently watching the activities. It certainly proves that they are all incompetent to stop such activities and they are not able to take any action against them. It is high time that such kind of banners are banned by the civic administration. Authorities should issue a notice to the party and leaders not to install such banners and impose huge fine. They should respect the High court order. - Probir Kumar Bose, New Panvel Miraculous escape An air ambulance with seven persons on board crash landed in the field of Najafgarh area of South Delhi after both its engines apparently shut down but no one sustained any major injury. It is indeed a freak accident and all the passengers were saved owing to the brave act of the pilot. A 61 year old cardiac patient was being ferried to Delhi from Patna in the aircraft. The others miraculously escaped including the crew, the patient’s relatives and a doctor. It was a daring attempt by the pilot to land on the adjoining road to the field and after touching down, it took off again only to land at a nearby field. The villagers lent their helping hand and the patient escaped without getting injured in the process. Pilot deserves all credit for avoiding a fatal tragedy inside the Air Ambulance. Further, he avoided the crowded residential area to prevent any civilian causality. The mishap occurred when both its engines failed midair and the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing despite being a few kilometres away from the Delhi airport and was forced to land in city’s outskirts. It is indeed a miraculous escape for all the crew members and others inside the air ambulance. The cardiac patient got the real shock of his life before being treated in Delhi. - C. K. There are over 4,000 compounds in cigarette smoke, of which, most are found to be toxic and are known to damage human cells. Some of them are Carcinogenic – causing cancer. Tobacco smoke comprises mainly of Nicotine (not carcinogenic, but highly addictive), Carbon Monoxide (a poisonous gas) and Tar (contains several cancer-causing chemicals). When a smoker inhales cigarette smoke, 70% of the tar remains in the lungs. Over time, these chemicals cause enough damage to the body to cause multiple types of critical illnesses. The number of smoking population across the globe is staggering. According to the data from the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are about 130 Crore smokers worldwide and 20 billion cigarettes are sold every day. There are approximately 12 Cr smokers in India. According to ‘The Economic Burden of Tobacco related diseases in India’, released by the Public Health Foundation of India, with support from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the WHO India, the total economic costs attributable to tobacco use from all diseases in India, in 2011, for persons aged 35-69 years amounted to Rs 1,04,500Cr. TRENDS WORLD WIDE: WHO reports tobacco use as the leading preventable cause of death; each year, it kills more than 5 million (50 lakhs) people. It is on track to kill more than 8 million by 2030, by which time approximately 80% of the deaths would occur in low- and middle-income countries. • WHO reports that 5million deaths are due to direct use of tobacco and nearly 6 lakhs deaths are due to secondary exposure • If current smoking pattern remains, by 2020 there will be around 10 million (1 Cr deaths) each year • Smoking causes 30% of all cancer deaths, 17% of heart disease death and 80% of death due to bronchitis and emphysema • Over one in two people in India are exposed to second hand smoking at home and 29% in public places Turbhe residents resort to rasta rook By Vijay Bhor TURBHE: Residents of Sector-21, Turbhe resorted to Rasta Roko at 1.00 am on Tuesday. The ‘Quit Smoking Pledge Wall’ was placed at the venue, on which a number of smokers pledged to quit their habit of smoking. A number of people, who have quit smoking, shared ideas that may help others, kick the butt. A walkathon was also organized inside the Corporate Park to spread the message about healthy l living by quitting smoking. Dr Shirshir Shetty, Onco Surgeon, Fortis Hospital Vashi, who oversaw the World NoTobacco Day activities, said, “Smoking is an easy habit to form, but difficult to quit. Young people typically start smoking to satisfy their curiosity, but soon end up getting used to the experience. The menace of smoking is noticeable among the young corporate employees – especially in the IT / ITES and BPO sectors. Once addicted, it becomes an excuse for taking a break, and feel relaxed amid stress of workload. While warnings of the hazard of smoking are all over, smokers tend to ignore the fact that it can cause life-threatening illnesses – and in worst cases, even death. More and more young men and women professionals are getting addicted to smoking, risking not only their own health, but also of those who are in their company. Fortis Hospital, Vashi, is reaching out to the corporate employees with a simple and clear message – Say No to Tobacco today for healthier tomorrow.” As per statistical day the Fortis gets approximately 10 cases every week, where patients are affected due to the habit of smoking.
