Southville for Others gives back to community
Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) officers, teachers, and staff stepped away from their classrooms and
offices last October 3, 2014 to volunteer in Baranggay CAA as part of its Southville for Others (SFO) Day. More than 500
volunteers from SISC helped in landscaping, facilitating a job fair, donating sewing machines for livelihood programs,
educating local school children through storytelling,
educational and leadership workshops, improving the library
of CAA Elementary School through book donations, and
conducting a medical mission for residents specially the
senior citizens.
SFO Day sponsors played a big role in the successful conduct
of the event. Thank you to the sponsors who made this effort
possible namely the families of Simon Agatep, Aaron Ryley
Ang, Daryl Clyde Ang, Rianna Ang, Mischa Angeles, Raven
Maat, Martha Pinca, Javier Roxas, Yoann Savigny, Hans Philip
See, Wynona Weidmann, and River Ypon. Thank you also to
the following event partners: CMP Federal Security Agency,
Inc., Altaserv, Palms Fashion House, Urban Chef, Buhay OFW,
Henlin, KFC, Ms. Corazon Tiu and the Brgy. CAA local officials
SFO Day builds on SISC’s long-standing commitment to use
service as solutions to challenges in renewing and energizing
local communities. Since its founding 24 years ago, SISC
has engaged in active philanthropy with the primary focus
being participation in community service projects in which its
students and employees can take an active role. Volunteerism
is entrenched in SISC’s culture and the school has created
SFO Day to help employees increase the impact of their own
charitable giving.

Keys to an
effective PTC
A parent-teacher conference is a prime
opportunity to understand what your child is
learning, how your child is coping, and how you
can be an active participant on an appropriate
level. Getting the most out of a parent-teacher
conference requires a bit of preparation. Here
are some tips:
Students & Parents’
Bulletin No. 16
AY 2014-2015

1. Write down concerns and questions.
Each day your child comes home, ask him
about his day. As you learn more about
what your child's day entails, you may have
some questions or concerns your kid can't
clarify. Make notes about what you want to
know more about and keep a running list to
prepare for the conference. A teacher can't
help if they don't realize there is a concern.
2. Show up early. It is likely your child's

teacher will be meeting with 20 or more
parents. Make sure you show up early. If
other parents don't make their appointment,
you may get some extra face time with the
teacher and help keep the time slots moving
right along.
3. Really listen to the evaluation. You need
to come prepared to hear the good and the
bad. Parents who want to go on the
defensive are not going to help anyone; do
your best to listen quietly, don't interrupt,
and work with the teacher to help improve
your child's situation. (http://parentingsquad.com/how-toachieve-success-at-parentteacher-conferences)

SISC teachers earn
master trainer
certification
The US-based Educational Testing Service (ETS),
developer of the Test of English for International
Communication (TOEIC) test, recently certified SISC
educators Phi Anh De Castro, Josephine dela Peña,
and Ailene Fulgencio as TOEIC PROPELL intructors
and English ambassadors. They finished an intensive
workshop held in Vietnam where they learned the
latest updates on the test, teaching tips,
teachable strategies for achieving the best
score, how to effectively integrate more
activities into TOEIC test practice course,
and recommendations on the most up-todate and appropriate course materials.
TOEIC scores are used by organizations
around the world to hire, place, and promote
employees as they determine a person's
English ability on real-life work settings.
