UIC NATIONAL STUDENT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO EMPLOYMENT WEEK 2015 UIC STUDENT EMPLOYMENT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO OFFICE National Student Employment Week (NSEW) was established to increase public awareness of and recognize our student’s contributions to the campus by recognizing the importance of their experience as student workers. For the past twenty-two years, in conjunction with the National Student Employment Association, the UIC Community joins the celebration of National Student Employment Week from April 13-17, 2015. The Student Employment Office will be hosting a number of activities throughout the week. Please ensure to gather more information about these and other events in this publication. On behalf of UIC’s Student Employment Office, I want to thank you for your interest and participation in National Student Employment Week. This is our 22nd year of celebrating the work and accomplishments of our student employees at UIC. Most of us rely greatly on our dedicated student employees to assist in the needs of our units and departments. During this week, I also ask that we reflect upon what student employees learn and gain by working on campus. Working on campus gives our student employees invaluable career related skills and allows opportunities to enhance relationships with fellow student employees, faculty and staff which in turn leads to a stronger sense of community. These are all important factors in career readiness upon graduation. Please take some time to celebrate the efforts of our student employees during National Student Employment Week. Thank you to all of our participants for your many outstanding contributions, Sincerely, Thy Nguyen, Director, Office of Career Services and Student Employment Workshops Internship: Jumpstart Your Career Presented by: Target Tuesday, April 14th, 2015 3:30pm–5:00pm SCE, 613 Building a Better Resume Presented by: UIC Career Services and Student Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 3:30pm–5:00pm SCE, 613 Employment Essential Interview Tips Presented by: Target Thursday, April 16th, 2015 3:30pm–5:00pm SCE, 613 Stop by our booths and win prizes Come see us in the SCE Concourse to participate in various contests during National Student Employment Week. He is always looking for ways to help his community.” Nominated by: Jorge A. Martinez Romo 2015 Essay Contest Winners Darga, Christopher Student in the College of Applied Health Sciences “This is not true to everyone but having a part-time job should be a necessity. First and foremost, every career opportunity requires experience, and the only way to meet this expectation is to have a job. Work experience changes the way people act in a positive way… My jobs have taught me that I should never accept anything but my best… It installed in me a work ethic where if I am not doing something, then I am wasting time and become slightly anxious. This has helped me get ahead in life … “ Fernandez, Agatha Mari Student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences “Employers are not looking for cookie-cutter employees to hire; they are looking for employees with varying skills and experience… As a college student, building a resume as early as possible is idea, and having a part-time job is a great foundation in building that resume… Students who have part-time jobs will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the work force after they graduate.” Jenny Korn Student in the Graduate College “My Part-time job professionalizes me as reliable, proficient, and kind… There is a cycle of kindness to which we may all choose to contribute. Courtesy is important in interactions, as is proficient and reliability… My part-time job contributes to academic knowledge about online behavior, teaches me about important life skills, exposes me to countless authors and reviewers in my field of communication, boosts my name at professional conferences, and is a position that I enjoy and consider a blessing.” Sarah Lee Student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences “The importance of a part time jobs are plentiful- they are a valuable addition to nay resume, provide greater financial security and independence, and give a student real experience that cannot be learned simply in a classroom. But what I found most significant in my part-time job is the immeasurable amount of personal growth I have experiences in terms of maturity, confidence, and leadership. It is incredibly rewarding to know that I am able to impact the lives of my residents by reaching them with insight…” Catherine Kozikowski Student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences “Through this journey, I have learned how to be a compassionate worker. I not only sympathize with other patients and people, but I put my whole should into giving them the best care; their pain becomes my pain and suffering as well. I hope to alleviate even some of that pain in any way that I possibly can, even if it is putting a smile on their face for only a few seconds. Knowing that I made even one person smile is what gets me going; that’s the reason why I want to become a nurse in the first place.” 2015 Essay Contest Winners Allison Rose Ramirez Student in the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts “Not only has my work been useful to the center, but thanks to the network of the center’s director Megan Carney, I am now accepting freelance positions for organizations like the Swedish American Museum and National Public Housing Museum. My experience at the Gender and Sexuality Center has everything to do with the motivation and support that was needed to get me through this year and onto that commencement stage.” Dani Mikhael Student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences “Thus, I am grateful for my job as a Career Peer Mentor because it has opened the doors to professionalism for me. It allows me to be creative, helpful, collaborative and productive. It helps me to overcome my shyness and regain my full self-confidence. Above all, it makes me feel excited about my dream to attend Medical School and become a pediatrician knowing that I am developing the skills needed to turn my dream job into reality.” We would like to thank the “UIC Student Employee All-Stars and Essay Contest” Selection Committee Sarah Udaipurwala Tonia Nikopoulos Lisa S.
